Philly’s New Curfew Nets Six Dozen Teens

PHILADELPHIA, Aug. 14 (UPI) — The first weekend under Philadelphia’s new teen curfew, enacted after a rash of violence involving young people, resulted in 62 arrests, officials said Sunday.

The Philadelphia Inquirer reported 50 of the teens were picked up for curfew violations Friday night and just 12 were taken into custody Saturday night.

City officials are trying different measures to channel youths away from violent activities, including keeping recreation centers open later. Mayor Michael Nutting went bowling with hundreds of city teenagers in the Kensington neighborhood Saturday night, the newspaper said.

“He bowled, and there was a walk-around in parts of Center City,” Nutter spokesman Mark McDonald said.

Youths under 18 are to be off Philadelphia’s streets by 9 p.m. on Fridays and Saturday under the new edict, which was implemented after several incidents in which people were attacked by roving bands of teens.

The weekend was not without blemish, the newspaper said. A teenage girl was stabbed by an 18-year-old youth as she walked home from the bowling party her alleged assailant also had attended.

“It’s unfortunate that this one individual made a very bad judgment and did something for which he is now in trouble,” Nutter said. “The criminal justice system will now deal with this young man.”

The mayor also urged businesses to chip in with financial support, volunteers and jobs for teens.
