Pfizer accused of suppressing study results

October 9, 2008 by

Pfizer is accused of manipulating resultsA lawsuit has been filed against pharmaceutical firm Pfizer, alleging that the company attempted to suppress negative research about its epilepsy drug, Neurontin.

Documents submitted by the plaintiffs allege that the drug company delayed publication of certain studies regarding the medication’s success for conditions other than epilepsy.

They also claim that Pfizer used spin techniques to make results seem more positive and combined both favorable and negative findings together, which distorted research.

The pharmaceutical giant has denied it is at fault, releasing a statement saying it is "committed to the communication of medically or scientifically significant results of all studies, regardless of outcome."

According to the New York Times, some of the studies in question raised doubts about how effectively Neurontin was at treating bipolar disorder, some types of pain and migraines.

In 2004, the drug company paid hundreds of millions of dollars to settle a lawsuit claiming Neurontin was promoted to treat unapproved conditions by Warner-Lambert, a firm which was purchased by Pfizer in 2000.

Pfizer stopped marketing Neurontin in 2004, when it lost its patent protection. The company’s 2007 revenue was $48.4 billion.

Why pick on this single company? All pharmaceutical companies ‘spin’ study results. This is why it is so difficult to compare safer therapies. People just need to have a different health philosophy and reserve drugs for truly dire problems, when the undesired effects are worth the risk. If you use drug therapy as a last resort, you can save the patient and deal with the undesired effects after the life is saved. Less gradual deterioration due to drug effects and better quality of life. Individualized health care is the key to this. You may be surprised to learn that everybody dies- medicos behave as if they can stop death.

I wish the new Congress would go after the drug companies. No one monitors their drug studies and they get away with bloody murder. In Europe they study drugs for years to make sure there are no mortal side effects. We supposedly rely on the FDA which is a joke in itself. More folks are going to alternative methods of treatment because of less side effects. Most medical schools are funded by drug companies. Sooooo the doctors don’t look for a cure, they prescribe drugs to treat your symptoms and never look at curing. If one hypertensive drug doesn’t work to lower blood pressure, they give you one or two more. The drug companies have persuaded the heart association, the diabetic association and others to lower the norms and therefore prescribe more drugs. Now they want to give hypertensive drugs to “prevent” high blood pressure. Paleeze!!!! Even vaccines are dangerous and they mandate so many for young children. Oh I could go on for hours, but people please investigate and don’t take what the docs say as gospel. You can do better with alternative treatment. They may take a little longer, but they have been around a lot longer than our modern medicine. Yes there has bee progress in treating certain diseases and I give them credit for that. Cancer for example, I really do believe there is a cure but it would put a lot of folks out of work just like the TB cure did in the 50′s.
