Organizations, Corporate Media Growing Wise To EMP Threat

The threat posed by an electromagnetic pulse (EMP) was once considered by the mainstream as simply the stuff of science fiction or lone nut jobs living in rooms lined with tin foil. But people are now coming to understand that an EMP — whether from natural causes or a weapon — poses a real threat to America’s electronics and could send the country into a new Dark Age.

Even the corporate media is onboard, as the mainstream media poster child USA Today ran an article warning of the dangers of an EMP attack in its Oct. 27, 2010 edition. Titled One EMP burst and the world goes dark, Dan Vergano leads with, “The sky erupts. Cities darken, food spoils and homes fall silent. Civilization collapses. End-of-the-world novel? A video game? Or could such a scenario loom in America’s future?”

The answer is a resounding, “Yes it could!”

An EMP could come from the sun. The 11-year solar cycle will hit its maximum in 2012. Solar flares have caused blackouts in the past. Or, it could come in the form of an attack from one of America’s enemies.

There are reports that rogue nations like Iran and North Korea have been working on an EMP weapon that could be launched from a ship or barge off the American coast. And the missile launch — while the Barack Obama administration denies it was a missile, numerous experts have said that’s what it was — spotted off California’s coast by a KCBS camera Nov. 8 shows that America is vulnerable to attack.

An EMP would shut down the nation’s power grid, silence communications and render everything containing electronics — from hand-held games to cell phones to airliners — inoperable. Water would cease to flow as pumping stations shut down. Grocery store shelves would be bare within hours. The banking system would crash.

Those in poor health depending upon machines to stay alive would be dead in minutes. Within days the weak and infirm would be dead from dehydration. As the crisis grew, riots would ensue and people would turn on one another. As an example for how bad it could get, just check out some of the headlines from the Black Friday madness at stores across the country. And those incidents stemmed from anxiety over low-priced convenience and luxury items — not things that meant the difference between life and death.

On Nov. 17 The Heritage Foundation issued a report, EMP Attacks — What The U.S. Must Do Now, that outlined the dangers of an EMP attack and suggested a to-do list for the Barack Obama administration and Congress to better prepare the nation for such an attack.

According to The Heritage Foundation, the U.S. must take steps to:

  • Prevent the threat. Regardless of the mitigation and response measures, a massive EMP impact could have a devastating impact on the United States. Washington must pursue an aggressive protect-and-defend strategy, including comprehensive missile defense; modernizing the U.S. nuclear deterrent; and adopting proactive nonproliferation and counter-proliferation measures, both unilaterally and in partnership with allies.
  • Provide resilience. Measures must be adopted to ensure the resilience of the U.S.-Canadian electrical grid and telecommunications systems, including developing limited redundancy and identifying means for the timely replacement of essential damaged parts or their rapid substitution.
  • Plan for the unthinkable. The U.S. must have robust pre-disaster planning — with practical exercises that include top officials who rehearse a wide variety of contingency scenarios — that integrates federal, state, local, private-sector, non-governmental organizations, and international support.
  • Protect the capacity to communicate. The U.S. must have the means to establish assured emergency broadcast as well as interactive communications both within the U.S. and across the globe. An EMP strike can easily obliterate America’s electrical, telecommunications, transportation, financial, food, and water infrastructures, rendering the United States helpless to coordinate actions and deliver services essential for daily life. In the words of Arizona Senator Jon Kyl, EMP “is one of only a few ways that the United States could be defeated by its enemies.” The time to prepare is now.

Of all the things that government is considering, this is one concern that must be front and center. And expecting that Congress and the President will screw it up — as they do most everything else — it’s something that everyone must prepare for themselves.

How to prepare? Consider what life will be like when your electronic conveniences — and necessities — are no longer available. Then store food, water, medicines, sundry items, guns and ammunition — and gold and silver for the barter economy that will develop later.

The American public has become very ‘soft’ and accustomed to all the modern conveniences. If a disaster of this magnitude occurs most will not know how to cope, especially inner cities. I think we better be sticking to our guns and religion, along with preparing as best we can.

    • Al Sieber

I agree, also try to get a hold of some old tube type radios, or old military surplus hand crank generators and other electronics that won’t be affected by EMP, . check out on the internet ways to survive. this could put us back in the stone age.

      • 45caliber

Be sure to remember to get an old-style automobile. Tractors will likely still work – at least the simple ones – but the autos now used will be simply junk. I’m talking pre-1970 vehicles, although some 70 models might still work. Or you can walk or ride a bike.

        • Angel Wannabe

Our old Cub Cadet & large Ford tractor will do too!

          • 45caliber

Correct. And I can just see an old tractor like one of those heading down the road to try to get out of an area killed by EMP waves. It will be pulling a small trailer with the rest of the family aboard…

The sad thing is – I really expect to see just that if we are hit.

          • Granny Mae

I’m wondering if it might be a good idea to turn our garages and or small barns etc. into a faraday cage and put some items in there to protect! I’m thinging in the lines of a generator , radio, some spare auto parts etc. The older cars are protected mainly because of their metal frames acting like a faraday cage around them. I sent for instructions for making a room in the house into a faraday room. It looks to me to be rather simple. Just make sure that what you are trying to protect is surrounded by a wire cage and the items to be protected are up off the floor and not touching the sides of the cage. To do a room you would have to use metal foil and make sure there is no brakes in the foil walls. In doing the walls you would have to look for metal tape that is conductive. It must use conductive glue on the tape. That whole thing seemed to me to be a lot more complicated and cost prohibitive than just making a faraday cage or lining a garage walls and ceiling with metal. I believe that it is better to be prepared for these things as best we can than to stick our head in the sand. I get so mad at my husband because he is so familiar with this stuff that he doesn’t see the urgency for such things because he knows within himself that he can probably rig up something to work in a pinch but he doesn’t understand that other people don’t have the knowledge that he has and they don’t share his comfort level. I just try to pass along what I can pick up from him. I have had the material for the faraday room for over a year now and three days ago was the first he knew I had it !!! LOL ! He laughed at me but I see he wasted no time in taking it out and reading it ! My brain is not as wise as his so I am finding it a little difficult now days to keep up with his and make intelligent conversation over morning coffee !!LOL !

          • independant thinker

Granny Mae, I ran across a book in a used book store you might be interested in. It is “Indian Herbology of North America” by Alma R Hutchens. I flipped thru it quickly and it has several entrys on diabetes.

          • Granny Mae

            Independant Thinker,

Thanks so much. I ordered the book just now. Had to look around for a good price, that is one expensive book ! Prices ranging for $200.00 something to I think I paid $30.00 for it ! I am glad to get it though. I am anxious to look through it. Thanks again, God Bless !

      • jimster

What you going to do with a radio? Who you going to listen to? Best use at that time is to use it for a boat anchor.

      • Al Sieber

Hey Jimster, there’s lots of Ham Radio operators who’ll be broadcasting on the S.W. band, they know what’s happening.

        • Lewis Munn

Ham radio operators are very prepared, but as has been seen in many recent cases, the government refuses to utilize them effectively.

Maybe with no government left, they can actually do what they are prepared to do for the nation!

    • Warrior

What a bunch of whooie! Howard Dean poses a much more serious risk to communications than EMP!

      • Dick Gazinia

So does Glen Beck – never one to be influenced by the truth. His latest lies about the food safety bill are shameless. I wonder who’s paying him to spout such lunacy about common sense practices.

        • Robin from Arcadia, IN

Dick… Your post was vague. If you can’t at least post one fact to back up what you say, don’t bother posting. Perhaps a liberal website would suit you better.

        • 45caliber

This new food bill makes it illegal for any farmer to set up a stand and sell his produce by the side of the road or at any Farmer’s Market. So any small farmer who happens to have extra food has to let it go to waste – or sell it to some big food co-op for whatever they want to pay for it. Then they can sell it to you at whatever price they want to charge. In fact, if you were to grow a small garden at your house and wanted to share some of your food with the next door neighbor, it would be illegal. This whole bill is meant simply to give the food producers more profits and the government more control over food and you.

          • Warrior

And will more guvment workers have to be hired to provide the necessary oversight? IF so, I feel sorry for them because they are not going to receive a raise for 2 stinking years.

          • Christin

Also the “Bill 510″ states that they can destroy your private home grown garden and confiscate your land. Without your land on which your home no doubt rests; you can then be hearded into the city on the trains to further pay for your crimes of growing food for your family. SB 510 is Unconstitutional and a Freedom stealer.

Their true goal: starvation and control of the masses

Sounds like DICK needs to read the Bill himself… must have a name complex.

          • Al Sieber

We need to get rid of every son of a bitch who voted for it.

          • Granny Mae

Just another case od the dems. having to get something pushed through while they still can. Not only should we get rid of everyone that voted for this thing but we should find the jerk that wrote it and well I’ll leave that to your imagination !

        • 45caliber

Incidently, I don’t know what Glen Beck said – I never listen to any of them. You libs are always saving me the time and trouble by quoting them.

          • Kate8

45 – Beck told the truth about the food adulteration bill. Actually, he understated it.

Not only that, it is one of those bills that opens the door to further tyranny later.

        • Michael J.

You aren’t a Monsanto stock holder by any chance, are you?

        • Vicki

Dick Gazinia should read the food safety bill then point to exactly were Glen Beck lies. He will fail of course and like the typical liberal will not even try.

And don’t forget to write your congressman about what you think.

Dave can use it too. :)

        • http://?? Joe H.

you are a fat bag of hot air! show me three lies that Beck has told and back it up with proof!! All Beck has said is that under this law there are certain things that CAN be done! with the past record of this mad man we have running the show as president I would put nothing past them!! If you would then you deserve everything that happens to you! Especially after insulting the name of one that is simply trying to get you to be prepared!! I don’t know why I even bother trying to talk common sense to you, it’s a foriegn language to you!!

        • JC

Hey Dick, take off the blinders…
This bill gives government complete and total control of everything you eat and all holistic medicine as well as the “right” to enter your domicile and confiscate whatever the hell they “deem” to be illegal.
Boy that sure says “common sense” to me. NOT!

      • Robin from Arcadia, IN

Warrior… Would you rather be prepared for the worse and if it didn’t happen look like a fool, or be prepared for the worse and it happens and you can cope? You weren’t a boy scout, were you?

        • Warrior

No. Plus I refused to become an altar boy. Bad Boy! Keep up the good work though.

      • 45caliber

A solar flare shut down the electricty to a large section of Canada some years ago. And the astronomers fear that in the near future we’ll see more of that – even if no one decides to see what a nuke can do to us.

So it is a danger after all.

        • Warrior

Well, right now I don’t think we have any control over solar flares, possibly we can control Howard Dean though.

          • http://?? Joe H.

Just a few years ago a wrong switch being thrown not a mile from where I sit here in Eastlake Ohio threw a back surge through the lines that shut down the power in parts of Canada and a good part of the northeastern united states! Parts of the area were without power for as much as three weeks! Had it been during the winter there would have been a lot of deaths from exposure!! Are you ready for that?? I hope so as I enjoy posting with you!!

        • Questioner

Solar Flares are on the increase, and over the next few years expected to return to normal. Part of the Climate Change that Al Gore has blown out of proportion is actually caused by an abnormal lack of solar flares over the past 10 years.
The Earth is protected by layers in the atmosphere fromn the full brunt of solar flares. Only the strongest ones can affect Comm etc., and even then just to the level of annoyance.
The danger from a Man made EMP is in that it is underneath the protective layers and the earth will receive the full brunt of it. The EMP from Hiroshima is on record and that is where the danger lies. In a Low Level Nuke Explosion at about 400 KM above ground.

Read “One Second After” by William Forstchen. This will give you an idea of what it will be like.

    • CalWest

The book “One Second After” will have a lasting effect on your life.
It scared the heck out my family. Because of that book we have prepared ourselfs for a possible occurance. Buy it used on Amazon.

      • Matt

Yep, same here. I am setting money aside early next year. Props to my cousin for insisting I read the book. It will give you a couple weeks of broken sleep, but then you get over it and start thinking how you would fare in a short term disaster… say 30 days with no services.

      • Granny Mae

Was it you that suggested the book in an earlier post ? I don’t remember who did but I figured if it effected them that much I would get the book and read it too ! I did and it was an eye opener ! Not that I didn’t know what the effects would be from an EMP blast but my thinking hadn’t gone far enough ! I was stuck in the early days of the blast and the effects but for some reason my brain didn’t carry through to the months down the road. This book brought it all to light and I came to understand things better and even came to an understanding of human nature when pushed to it’s limits. The info in this book is very informative and rounds out a persons understanding of the real circumstances facing everyone. Those of us prepared may even find ouselves in different circumstances than we considered to begin with. I bought the book used from Amazon and have now sent my copy to my son in of all places North Carolina ! I am glad I read the book. Thanks to who ever reccommended it !

Have some small important electronics stored inside metal cans, even cookie cans will work.

    • http://Alaska Wild Bill

Whatever device that is put inside a metallic container MUST be insulated from the inside of the metal container.Look up FARADAY CAGES online. There are sites that show you how to build poor mans faraday cages with simple everyday items like aluminum or copper foil, duct tape, mylar blankets, cardboard box’s etc.

An old refrigerator works very well.

In fact a lot of the effect can be reduced (ain’t perfect but reduced is better than full impact) with a quality lightening rod system.

        • Al Sieber

I use a refrigerator also, plus a old microwave to store some of my radios.

        • Granny Mae

          Robert Smith,

The key word here is OLD ! A real old refrigerator is made of a metal box but the newer old fridges. are plastic. Not old enough ! The microwave is a better idea. When using metal cans such as cookie and popcorn cans pur a piece of wood on the bottom and wrap the article in news paper and lay it on the wood so as not to touch the metal in anyway and there you have a faraday cage !! I stor a lot of things in those fancy decorative cans. I love them. You can have something unsightly stored away in the can and still have it handy !

  • Chris

I’ve already been trying to harden my house against this. Shielded cables, metal metal boxes for electronics, whole house surge protectors, point of use surge protectors… But its so expensive…

It would be great if someday they would figure something out to protect an entire house with a magnet on pole or something like they can apparently use to shield solar wind for space ships.

They have shown that a magnet no wider than your thumb can deflect a stream of charged particles like those in the solar wind. It gives new life to an old idea about shielding spacecraft, and might just usher in a new era of space travel. “Space radiation has been called the only showstopper for the crewed exploration of space,” says Ruth Bamford of RAL. “Our experiment demonstrates there may be a way the show can go on.”

I we aren’t quite talking about the same things, but they do seem to be related in my non-expert opinion.

    • Granny Mae

My understanding is that surge protectors won’t work because the pulse is so sudden that it happens before the surge protector can work !

  • Joyce from Loris

I’m ready. The preparations that we have made have been based on an EMP attack and the collapse of the economy. Food storage, heirloom seeds, free flowing artisan well, ammunition for hunting and protection, and silver for bartering. We have been working on this for a while, but still have much to do. I am learning about food supplies that exist in the woods, foods such as those eaten by the Indians. Don’t know if we will ever need them, but living on the coast, we are always prepared for hurricanes. This is not much different, just in greater quantities.

  • Santi

I think JESUS CHRIST sent us a message on SEPT. 11th, and that is to come to him. Confess all your sins and follow the LORD JESUS CHRIST. He is sending messages to all the world to name a few: Pakisan, Hati, India. Wake up people, pick up your cross and follow the LORD. GOD BLESS.

    • Christin

I’m with you on that one, Santi.

“Seek Him first and often… because He’s coming in the hour you think not.”

Prepare your heart FIRST… Jesus as your Savior, and then prepare for your family… God, garden (food), guns, gold…

      • Granny Mae

        I agree !

    • Jim Harrison

Thank you, Santi. That is only the beginning. Are God’s people prepared for the church’s finest hour? What an opportunity to reach out and disciple the nations–i.e. the cultures of the world. Only God knows what the wake-up call must be. But I am persuaded that He does all things well. He will not forsake His people. He may call some home to heaven sooner than they expected, but there will always be those left behind to advance Christ’s kingdom until the knowledge of His glory shall fill the earth as the waters cover the sea. Where sin abounds, grace does much more abound. What a powerful gospel!

  • Polski

This is really important so you know the politicians, governments, and corporate executives will do ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!!!! They’re all CROOKS!!

  • Mark Matis

With the exception of the electric power grid, this SHOULD NOT take us back to the Stone Age but instead merely back to the 1950s. Except for the grid, EVERYTHING that worked back then should survive an EMP. Vehicles with carburetors, points distributors, and mechanical fuel pumps will run just fine! For those of you who have wells, whether for drinking or for irrigation, one of these will provide all the water you want:
It would be smart to have some chlorine bleach available to purify it, but remember that many people in this country drink well water daily without ANY purification.

And NASA is developing a system to warn when a damaging solar flare is on the way with the potential to disrupt the electric grid. The thinking APPEARS to be that the power compnanies MAY BE able to shunt their long lines to ground before it hits, thereby saving the grid. Don’t know if this would be enough warning for an EMP strike by Iran or the Norks, but…

  • Cliffystones

Get a portable short-wave radio. Store it in a metal container (I used an ammo can), Also a supply of batteries. Even if local stations get “fried” there probably be short wave stations operating in parts of the world that dodged the “EMP bullet” by chance.

    • Granny Mae

Another good idea might be for those with some electronics knowledge to store away some parts like diodes and resistors and transistors etc. so they might be able to fix the radios of those that get fried ! Might be a good source of barter ! Also medicines of all kinds and bandages and rubber gloves. I learned a long time ago that we can take steril bandages and put them in sterilized canning jars and heat seal them and they will stay steril for ever unles they are broken !

  • Bob Wire

paper note book, index cards, #2 lead pencil and a good memory are hard to beat. Oh ? and a good horse.

    • rodney burke

Yeah and in many places that may mean they are our only transportation source. These “modern” cars are going to be useless if there is prolonged electromagnetic interference. Of course now if the pulse only does momentary damage, that can be repaired and our “stuff” will eventually work. The threat is still real, whether man-made or solar.

Of course we can’t do much about the solar. Iran and Al Quaida we can but haven’t!. Who is going to have the #$%%^^& to do what is necessary to defend us? John McCain? Mitt Romney? There isn’t a dem who cares, they are all in the business of selling us out to the UN and bankrupting us!

      • 45caliber

Keep in mind that instead of a horse to travel, you can use many small tractors or even most riding lawn mowers. Any vehicle that still has points and condensor instead of electronics will still work in most cases. That ususally means mid-70s or before. Also, you can always ride a bicycle. Or walk.

        • Granny Mae

I have to laugh when you talk about old riding lawnmowers ! If you only knew what is in this yard !! And all of them old just like me !!! The old guy in this house hardly ever buys anything new ! This family is big on old everything except when it comes to electronics ! My men are all up on electronics, we had an electronics business at one time and my husband also worked for the Space Center in electronics. Our boys grew up on electronics and I even had to work in the office and sometimes in the repair shop. They would tell me what to do and I would do it. Most of it was just soldering but it has all come in handy. The boys have all gone on to the electronics field and mostly into computers. I discovered that can become a very complicated field ! Especially when they all get together at holiday time and start talking business. I hear words I never dreamed of and sometimes wonder if I should slap their mouths for bad talk. As for me, give me the simple life ! I look to the Amish for how to get along without all the modern conviences ! They have done it forever and seem to be very content !

          • Granny Mae

We will all have to fall back on camping skills to get by !

      • http://?? Joe H.

        rodney burke,
If push comes to shove, we may have to protect ourselves! If you don’t already know how, LEARN!! There are people to teach you how to maintain and use a weapon, even some of your friends you don’t know about could! I think if I had to, I could still put on a blindfold and take an M60 apart and put it back together! Main thing to remember is to get the piston in right otherwise you have a very accurate single fire machine gun!! don’t like guns? Get a cross bow, 150 lbs is best. you can even get a cross bow pistol! Haven’t looked into them much so can’t tell you much about the power or pull on them!

  • 45caliber

    A few notes here.

Storing things in a metal can may work – but the can MUST be grounded! If not, the electrical particles cannot bleed away. Further, the item in the can needs to be insulated from the metal can.

One thing that might work for a house is a metal roof and siding. Again, it must be grounded. Grounds in many places aren’t hard to make – you can buy a grounding rod and drive it into the ground. It is really easy along the Gulf coast where I live as there are no rocks to stop the rod. Anything attached to the rod is grounded. Jumper cables will work for that. Or very heavy wire. Metal roof and sides on a garage may shield a car if grounded. Many garages in the country are made that way simply because it is cheaper.

Water will be the major problem. Few ground wells are contaminated since the sand and rock the water goes through will filter most of it well enough to drink. But … BIG but … water does not come to the surface in a well in most places. Most wells now are only one or two inches in diameter, which requires a powered pump. The pump will not normally be harmed in an EMP wave (electromagnetic particle wave) but the power to run it will be shut off. A portable generator large enough to run the pump will be required – and it will need to be shielded prior to the EMP wave since all I’ve seen does have some electronic controls.

Equipment that is not shielded will burn out the electronics in it. And it doesn’t have to be running to be burned out. Electronics runs on microwatts of power – and an EMP wave has more than that. Communications will be shut down – that includes all radio and tv stations. Plan on it.

The real problem will be in larger cities. At first water will be present since water towers provide water at pressure due to their heights. If you live in a city and an EMP wave hits, IMMEDIATELY wash out your tub, sinks, etc. and fill them with water to drink. There won’t be enough for baths. You want to get as much as you can before everyone else uses it up. Food will disappear quickly as noted and no more will be brought in. So stock up on things that will last for a long time – years if possible. Canned goods can work if protected so the cans don’t rust. Pasta, dried beans, rice, etc. is good but you have to protect it from both moisture and pests such as mice.

I suspect that within a month you will see cannibalism in the bigger cities. Pets will become food very quickly. Even rats will. Moving out of the cities, however, will expose you to those in the countryside and those also moving out.

Your best bet now is to find a home in the country with a good well that can be used without power. If there isn’t one, dig one. Dug wells were commone when I was a lot younger and people used them. (Find a dead animal in one? Dip it out and continue drinking the water. That’s what we did when I was a boy.) Cover it if possible. A bucket on a rope will give you what water you need. Insulate the house with grounded metal if possible. If not, at least insulate one vehicle and what electronics you positively MUST have (not really very many when you consider it. You really don’t need a tv or gameboy.) in metal that is grounded. And keep at least one weapon handy with plenty of ammo. Grow a garden if you can. Get a chest type deepfreeze and shield a generator so you can run the deepfreeze to keep food frozen. A chest type can hold a lot more than an upright. And learn to can food. Don’t expect the power to go back up immediately. Depending upon how widespread an outage is, it could take months.

Or you could move to Washington DC. Most of the system there is hardened. It is the only place that is.

    • Brenda

I live in a 1973 metal mobile home. Roof and sides are metal, and the skirting is metal with a few panels that are perforated. What would be the best way to ground this? I do have quite a few windows though so, would that be a problem? I also have a metal roof carport but the sides are open so should I be putting up metal siding on it as well. I could only do the length of this. Do I need to make sure that all of the screws are sealed? I am going to check out the methods that I need to protect my computer, but does living in a mobile home help with that as well. I do have information on there that I would need to get to even if the internet were to go down. I do want to be able to work off line.

      • 45caliber

Plan to cover the windows with Aluminum foil if you can get word of the EMP problem ahead of time. It would need to be in contact with the metal sides. The easiest way to ground the trailer would be to drive a copper grounding rod into the ground next to the trailer. Two would be better, one at each end. Then take a short battery jumper cabels and split them. Hook one end to the metal side of your trailer and the other to the ground. A heavy permanent wire could also be used with a bolted clamp at each end. You would need to put sides on your carport to protect your car completely. It too needs a grounding rod and cable. If you couldn’t do the end, you should be able to get some sort of car cover made of aluminum that you can put on or off as needed with a grounding cable attached. I won’t guarantee it will work since a strong enough EMP wave will go through it but it should block most of the effects. I’d also make sure my metal flashing around the bottom of the trailer is connected to the metal sides so it can also drain. It probably already is screwed into it buy you can check. If you have some old microwave ovens, they can block microwaves and therefore should protect electronics too. Keep it plugged in to insure it is grounded to your electrical system, even if it doesn’t work. I’m not sure you can get a computer into one but you should be able to get a laptop in. Actually, you might want a laptop since it runs on batteries too. A good electrician can wire one to run on other batteries than the one it has. I won’t even try to tell you how to do that since I’m not an electrician.

        • Lewis Munn

As an experienced RF engineer, I am appalled at some of the ideas tossed out here.

EMP is an RF phenomenon, and SURFACE area of the grounds is the most crucial item, not physical diameter.

          Ask any experienced RF engineer.

Sheet metal siding will work IF the siding makes good contract along all seems, otherwise RF gets right in through the slots. Reduced yes, avoided, no!

You can carefully ground your metal window screens; that will attenutate about as well as a copper plate over the window, but with both the grounds must be wide area.

I read lots of other items, but if you will find an old-fashioned ham operator, or a good RF broadcasting engineer, you can get the correct data for shielding.

Please be sure of the experience of those you ask. Many Ham ops today tend to be just buyers of commercial gear and do not know much about it, and RF and EMP protection either. Unfortunately.

Just be sure of your sources. And remember, doing it right tends to be expensive; cutting corners generally will not work.

      • http://?? Joe H.

check under the m. home and see if it has tie down cables. Those are usually on a six foot “screw” type rod and connected to the bottom of the trailor by the support beams to keep it from toppling over in very hard wind! If it has been done, there will most likely be at least six to eight on either side!

    • Esther

I think the metal roof is an EXCELLENT idea–your insurance company will love it, too, so it won’t cost as much as it seems to.

And mesh offers considerable protection, too–put (metal)screening all over your roof and connect it to a grounding rod and you’ll probably be all right.

  • Raggs

Figure this to be another scare tatic… something on the lines of global warming– oops– climate change… Yeah lets blame this one on mood monkeys…

    • TIMedWork

You make a valid point. I’ve often thought that if a government had a certain malevolence in its operating methods and motivation, a good EMP of a controlled and limited size would put the American people in line, not just for their healthcare and airport irradiation, but for everything. An EMP would be one of those “crises that should not go to waste”, to paraphrase the former Chief of Staff of the person that currently occupies the White House.

      • Raggs

Yup… It would not be hard to imagine this as yet the next step in control by the “elite”… not to mention just another form of taxation on us to pay for something that doesn’t even exist, at least in the minds of the people… So they have to project this as a “CRISIS” and we are too stupid to know what is best for us so they have to impose new “laws” and restrictions / regulations… Humm if I weren’t crazy I would call this TYRANNY!

      • 45caliber

One of the things I’m afraid of is that the ones in power have their fingers on the launch switches of our nukes.

If some group does decide to march on Washington with guns and Washington learns of it and where they are, that Congress and/or the President might decide to drop a nuke on them since the police and the military have basically refused to step in. If you think any of those in Washington would hesitate to use a nuke on them even if they are in a large city like New York or LA, you have more faith in them than I do.

But I expect them to use it above the ground just far enough to sear those they want dead – but high enough to create an EMP wave that would lock down as large an area as possible. Then the media can run in from out of the circle with their cameras to show all the starving people. And the warning would be: “This is all the fault of those terrorists who wanted to attack Washington. And it could happen to you unless you immediately report anyone who might want to attack us.”

        • Christin

I, too, have this uneasy feeling that if a real solar flare doesn’t happen that “they” (Ruling Elite Class) are planning on creating the crisis of an EMP either by America itself (False Flag) or by allowing a foreign missle in.

After all it will accomplish their goals … to quote the article… ” those in poor health depending on machines would die… the weak and infirm would die from dehydration” …of culling the population. That would get rid of a few million $ off the gov’t assisance Medicaid, Medicare, Social Security…

And it would allow for a police state and the global governance with the shut down of Electricity for most people to heat, cook, light homes, water flow, empty food shelves, communication, and entertainment …people will be isolated and bored, some will riot to beg the gov’t to fix it and the banking system with the dollar in decline would crash… hello NWO.

I think it odd that we are openly “talking” about it as if they want it and are preparing our brains for its eventual coming, don’t you?

          • Vicki

I think it is good that we talk about it. That alone will prepare us mentally so that IF it happens we will be much LESS likely to panic. Those of us who can will also do physical prep (the storing of non-perishables… ) and those who can’t but are mentally prepared will not be quick to panic. This can form core areas where order will not be lost and increase the survival chances for all in those areas.

          • Christin

Yes, Vicki, I agree… planning mentally and physically is great for us. But I still think it’s strange that the cat’s-out-of-the-bag when the gov’t hasn’t had a transparent bone in its body.

          • Vicki

Perhaps because the cat didn’t come out of the government? Unless you are claiming that the MSM UsaToday is just a government front org.

    • Warrior

Hey Raggs, remember Y2K? Yea, those were fun times too.

    • Esther

You need better ways to evaluate data. Global warming was bunk from the git-go as I knew from grade school when I learned about Leif Erickson. Calling CO2 bad (CO2 + H2o –> sugar + oxygen, photosynnthesis) goes against a primary school education as well. And as for the horror of warming temperatures–ask any farmer when plants grow best or any travel agent what climates are vacation or retirement favorites.

But the EMP threat is real. NASA has worried about it on itssophisticated sites; a Soviet ambassador defended his country’s intentions at the UN decades ago by describing an EMP attack as what his nation would do if they really wanted to harm the US and get away with it, we don’t have enough transformers to restore much power in less than 6 years, etc. Gather more facts on this.
Most of the preps you need to do are a good idea anyway. I have used mine without any extraordinary danger when the water was shut off for a day for repairs.

      • Granny Mae

This family has also fell back on our emergency preparations many times in the past. There are all kinds of emergencies. The head of the household has become sick and had to be hospitalized and the family had to resort to its years supply for sustanence for a year. Jobs could be lost in the future and you may have to fall back on your emergency supplies. I heard a young man say on the TV , during the fires out in California, that his house was gone but they had managed to save their emergency supplies so they would be alright till they could rebuild. Being prepared is a good thing so don’t let anyone try to make fun of you for being prepared. I am prepared and always adding to it!

        • independant thinker

Granny Mae, I will post this again hoping you will run across it. I found a book in a used book store you might be interested in. It is “Indian Herbology of North America” by Alma R Hutchens. I flipped thru it quickly and found several entrys about diabetes.

          • Granny Mae

            independant thinker,

Thanks. I wrote down the info and I will try to hunt up a copy ! Thanks so much for remembering me ! God Bless you !

  • DDavis

Americans have grown used to a relatively easy life with comforts and conveniences galore. However, necessity will always be the mother of invention.

Californians have always given serious thought to emergency preparedness because of the inevitable earthquakes, floods, and wildfires.

Some time back, I read about a contest to see which method would deliver a message faster. The contestants were a senior citizen man using Morse code and a teenager using text messaging. Morse code did the job faster than text messaging. Could a return to Morse code and using it as a backup system side by side with modern technologies be useful? Morse code was used much more difficult conditions than exist today.

Today’s TV watchers sometimes find that rabbit ears are still useful. Could rabbit ears once again be significant?

Since the beginning of time, people have used dowsing to find water. There are stories of places where dowsers have found water where trained geologists could not find any. The image many people have of a dowser is the “forked stick”. People living in rural areas of America have hired a local “water witch” to find a new well on their property.

    • Alaskasense

Dowsing for water still goes on and is relied on heavily. A dowser found my well location, at which I have a 280 foot deep well producing great flow and quality (with a pump). We have two men at work who are successful dowsers, both of whom claim they could teach anyone how to do it. It’s not particularly mysterious nor noteworthy, to my knowledge.

      • Granny Mae

You are so right. I did it when I was 11 years old. It is easy and I sure don’t have any special powers. I have to admit that it surprised me and blew my dad away at the time ! LOL !

    • Vicki

Morse code is VERY handy as it can be used with a lot more transport mediums then texting :) Morse code is so robust that you can even use fires, mirrors or smoke as data transport mediums. Try that with texting :)

(Vision of someone setting up a bunch of little camp fires in 5×7 grid patterns :) )

      • Granny Mae

        LOL ! Cute ! I love it !

  • http://com i41

Yes on the global bs change. The possible EMP bullet is a way. But it would fit for the lastest Onumnutts plan. Send ever one back to bushman style or blanket butt living standrads. I would guess a death rate in the USA to be aomewhere in a 80% death rate. I see the chocolate socialist marxist muslim and his racist lap pooches just passed a repration bill of several billion for blacks and indians. Now where in the hell is this give away money going to come from? Blacks and indians farming, indians don’t utalize their reservations, blacks don’t farm, makes their nappy headlook like a mud pack. All geared around supposed USDA loans. Better figure out how many collected moneies for years, off of food stamps and welfare. Just a program like Fannie and Freddie, no or poor credit history, no problem, they are minorities. Between the jungle gymn marxist muslim and the feely meely dorks that approved this mess anything is possible.

    • 45caliber

This doesn’t surprise me at all. They have tried in several courts, supposedly because white farmers could get government loans but black ones couldn’t. The courts all ruled there was no racism and if there were, it was a long time ago. In fact one group tried to sue for billions because their ancestors were slaves. The judge ruled that there were a lot of blacks who had slave ancestors who have made a lot of money and a lot of whites with money back then whos pedicesors are broke now. If the rich blacks could have gotten rich, they could have too. This is their way to get money since the courts turned them down. Their “leaders” will get millions but the rest will be happy to get a few hundred bucks.

      • Warrior

And who was involved in suing the guvment? Wait, wait, it’s on the tip of my tonque….

      • Kate8

        45 – It’s all another ruse.

There are 18,000 black farmers in America but, so far, around 85,000 have applied, and been granted, the money.

I guess they don’t need to show any proof of being turned down for a farm loan. Apparently their word is good enough.

  • B Walker

Anyone know if solar panels are affected or are they spared since they are well grounded?

    • Vicki

I would have thought that solar panels would tend to survive as they are not particularly sensitive to static charges but the controllers ARE. Of course you can bypass the controllers but then you end up with less efficient use of the panel and likely overcharge the batteries.

And the inverters that convert from battery voltage to house voltage are also at risk.

Now looking for links to EMP and solar panels I found much speculation and not much useful info.

This link however seemed to have the most interesting observations on EMP. You will note that it shows that not even vacuum tube radios and diesel devices are truly immune. Thus I would consider solar panels to be at risk too.

  • Raggs

I think this is a hoax!

The world has a better chance of exploding from the huge amount of idiots that buy into this…

    • Robin from Arcadia, IN

Raggs… Being prepared for a disaster and survival isn’t funny or a hoax. Global warming and swine flu could very well be hoaxes, but disasters come in all shapes and sizes. In the midwest, a tornado could do a lot of damage, as well as flooding. To be prepared is smart. Why would you criticize anyone who would want to be prepared for any disaster regardless of what it was caused by?

      • Raggs

I’m saying that if the government had a way to tax / steal from us in able to prevent tornados ( impossible to prevent ) they would do it.
They use any “CRISIS” manmade or otherwise as a gain of control over us… I’m not making fun of people who prepare for an emergency, I have been stocking up on food for some time now and I have enough to last about 6 months maybe longer… The progressive communist obama and party love to catch wind of anything they can use against us in the form of an emergency…

        • Christin

Sounds like a weird novel, huh… maybe the gov’t is openly discussing it because if and when it happens they WANT you to think we are being attacked by another gov’t when in fact it is our own progressives in America who have created this CRISIS.

          • Granny Mae

A couple years ago there was a shortage of food storage products from a company I deal with. Everything I ordered was back ordered for months. I was told at the time from another source that the reason (he found out) was because the government had put in their orders and they were being filled first ! I guess the government doesn’t think this is a bad idea because they are doing it too !

        • 45caliber

What I’m more afraid of than anything is the government getting wind of some group of agitators and use a nuke to stop them. Then they send media in to share the starvation of those in the area with the rest of us. The warning will be, “we are in charge. Don’t mess with us or THIS COULD BE YOU NEXT.”

          • Christin

I don’t think even our own gov’t would stoop so low (and I think they will go very low) as to nuke our own country… maybe bomb it to hit the electrical grid and send a missle to blow stuff up, but a nuke… really?
I believe the UNIONs will USE the labor to riot and be filmed on the 5 o’clock news (like in Greece and England) against the good and decent Americans who don’t drink the kool-aid.

          • Kate8

Christin, Our government has assured us that a nuke attack in the US is inevitable. They have palacial bunkers where they will go to protect themselves while we fry.

I wouldn’t put anything past these crazed idiots. If they don’t order the nuking themselves, they are doing nothing to prevent it and everything to assure it will happen.

National security means nothing as long as the borders are wide open.

          • Christin

The gov says that a nuke is inevitable? How do they know unless they are planning it? And why would they do that to America when they themselves have to live here and eat. The radiation will spread with the wind and will kill and give cancer to that which survives in the fall out area. No people can live and no crops can be planted in the target areas. How do the gov officials benefit from nuking our own land?

          • 45caliber

The radiation problem is overblown. Only those in Hiroshima who were directly in the way of the blast were affected by it – and it was dirty. The new ones aren’t.

In fact, when I was young, they insisted you had to go into an underground shelter and stay there up to three months to escape radiation. Today? They recommend staying in your house and not going out for three days.

I wouldn’t worry too much about it.

          • Granny Mae

I wouldn’t say that no-one would live and nothing would grow. Look at Japan today and 60 years ago two of her cities were bombed into oblivian ! Today they are blooming and bustling. It wouldn’t be very nice for a while but it wouldn’t be what we have been led to believe.

    • Warrior

This is kind of a sick thought but, at what point do I climb up onto my roof with a HELP sign?

      • Christin

When you 1.) become helpless, 2.)believe the gov’t cares about you and is smarter than you and will come help you, or 3.) when you live in Louisiana.

        • 45caliber

          You forgot California.

          • Christin

They sat outside with HELP signs… when was that? and for what occassion or should I say crisis?

      • JC

The answer is Never! All you’d be doing is pointing out your own vulnerability. Prepare, rather than relying on anyone for anything at any time.

      • Granny Mae

You crawl out on your roof with a help sign when you can no longer take care of yourself. With the right mind set that will never happen because you will be prepared for anything that comes your way and will even be able to help others that are not prepared.

check out and type in conspiracy theory with Jesse Ventura (watch Plum Island first and then, pertaining to this discussing the HAARP episodes will open your eyes). Check out that contraption they have in Alaska; Ventura did and couldn’t get in.

    • Granny Mae

I think HAARP is what has kept us here in Florida from being hit with any hurricanes this year. It is a scarry contraption for sure but if it can keep the canes away I’m not going to complain. ( YET! )

      • Granny Mae

Who knows they may be able to protect us from EMPs, natural or otherwise !

“False Flag” through HAARP in Alaska.

  • liv4jesus

Can an EMP burst penetrate through rock? and if so, how many feet of rock can it penetrate? There must be a formula or rule depending on the EMP’S strenth and / or duration. Anyone know these formulas and what they translate into?
If EMP cannot penetrate rock (or not much rock), caverns would be very useful places to store and shield electronics (and all kinds of other things for that matter).

    • 45caliber

All government centers meant to keep our politicians alive are underground but I don’t know how deep. THe problem is that the EMP wave force varies with distance and initial blast. So it can’t really be set as to how deep to go. Probably not too far under solid rock since the electro-magnetic particles (EMP) would be grounded out.

      • Lewis Munn

EMP is the pulse of energy, and covers a wide variety of frequencies, with correspondingly different penetrations, of conductors and non-conductors.

        • Granny Mae

Isn’t this same pulse what give us the northern lights?

  • JDH

Who cares if pre 1970 vehicles may still work or you can protect your own stuff with a metal roof or aluminum foil? When the power grid goes down the gas pumps, like the water pumps quit working. When your tank runs dry, there will be no place to fill it. I suggesat you cultivate a circle of Amish friends and study their lifestyle-they will be affected by the demise of technological civilization. Maybe this is the reason why the Mayan calendar supposedly ends in late 2012. Suggest you do as I plan to do-stock up on food, ammunition, keep my guns clean and loaded, and put your faith in the lord.

    • independant thinker

You can run the pre 70′s vehicles on alcohol if necessary. Short term there will be no problems but long term there could be problems with gaskets, hoses, etc. I read somewhere they will also run on kerosine but you need gasoline to start them. As far as the Amish, many of them drive vehicles just like everyone else I know all of them in my area do.

      • Granny Mae

        independant thinker,

There are quite a few Amish today with autos. Also I’m sure there are going to be many people that will begin to work on gas pumps and water pumps as soon as the shock wears off. I don’t see people just sitting around doing nothing. What I worry about is the people that normally make their living robbing and stealing all the time. If they form into bands and start roaming the countryside then we will have a lot of problems, and you know as well as I, that our society is full of these type of people. It won’t take long for gas to be available for emergency use but there will be bands of idiots that will try to take it from you for themselves, plus they will try to take your food. What that is going to do is force honest God fearing people to become forceful and use deadly force to protect themselves and others. We will become death givers instead of care givers, because we will have to shoot to kill to protect our own. Not a happy thought. I bet we will still have tree huggers that will be against guns !

      • American Patriot

Some areas of our country it’s illegal to pedal ass. Except Vegass. Let’s hope it stays there. I just had to say that.

      • American Patriot

Here is the latest news. White house now responds to the rolling black outs. As lies? So, where does the EPA fit into all this? See for yourself.

Live4Jesus was asking about rock and caverns and there is another great series of videos you can watch online (Conspiracy Theory with Jesse Ventura) where he has looked into the underground bunkers the government has been building for themselves. Check out the information there on the airport in Denver.

  • http://com i41

You can run any gas vehicle on #2 diesel, it will rattle and knock when put under load, if you take grain alcohol to add to the mix of at least 25/75 they will run fine. I know when I was single and realy did run out of gas, I put 5 gallons of #2 diesel and a fifth of everclear grain alochol and drove 50 miles to get gas. Same goes as putting in any cooking oil in a diesel, it works fine. Rarher than ruin the electrical systems, government will take all private land, and turn more into idle land and wilderness parks. Sytarve any one into using imported questional “food products”. Screw with the livbe organisms and leave the equipment alone, a slow process but is reall effient to slowly snare the organism who are peaceful and weak.

  • James

It seems that every 10 years or so the EMP scare comes up again. Check back historically and see how often the latest EMP doomsday prediction has happened. The usuall result is more research money dedicated to EMP protection, but what has actually been done about it in the last 30 years? If I were more of a conspiracy theorist, I would say it was a plot to keep EMP scientists employed. Actually, there has been a lot of research done on this, much of it from the atmospheric nuclear tests from the 60s to the 80s (the most recent ones by France). And guess what they found – the EMP pulse from a local lightning strike was a large multiple of anything ever measured on the ground from the nuclear tests. And to reply to one poster, those tests were with multi-megaton warheads, not the 50K size of Hiroshima. Has anyone else noticed how no one actually describes what a hypothetical EMP weapon would be, or how it would work? The risk from the solar flares is real, but remind me again how often that has affected the power grid? I am not a head in the sand sort, but I need to see actual evidence of these things. THe testing of a device capable of this kind of damage could not possibly be kept secret, but not even the Heritage Foundation’s sources mentioned such a thing. So apparently we are to believe that some evil genius is developing this device, with no need for testing, and that it will work perfectly the first time and devastate our society. Shame on you, Bob Livingston, for posting something like this with no better source material.

    • Lewis Munn

Nuclear devices can be tailored for blast, or radiation, or EMP effects, by substances used and casings and ignition sequences. And elevation above or below ground.

And we all need to remember that the government reads all of our posts, and pattern recognition data sorts out what will be stored to use against us later!

Maybe we need to bring back smoke signals, until the EPA snuffs us with our fires!!

      • Granny Mae

        Lewis Munn,

Oh you are so right. Especially now that the FCC has taken it upon themselves to monitor the net and contorol it ! Scarry.

  • LyingDog

Y’all need to go to the gym and exercise but not too much. Also, eat a good diet with plenty of vegetables and some meat. Just to develope a good marbling. ‘Cause, when these problems arise, I am afraid I am going to have to eat some of you, backstraps first of course.

  • NoFear

    Fear Mongering. Geez!

EMPs strong enough to induce eddy currents large enough to melt coils in motors/generators from power stations and wire in transmission lines would melt people too. There is no evidence this has ever happened in history (archeologists would have seen evidence of this in ore deposits) as the result of the sun. Artificially-generated EMPs are, by design and necessity, tightly focused. To generate one of sufficient power to melt wire requires a blast so big, the blast would do far more damage (unless there is some technology out there I am unaware of). Even so, it’s pretty much impossible to EMP an area the size of a city much less a planet w/today’s best technology.
Military EMP devices are designed to take down vulnerable military targets (communications) – a sealed metal enclosure defeats this.
Personal computers, phones and lightweight microcontrollers would be interrupted or damaged, but most modern power stations (with all their shielding) would most likely not be affected that badly – especially nuclear power plants.

    Fear Mongering Propaganda.
Can’t we get someone in office that does NOT do all this BS fear mongering?!?!?

  • Jeff

Now, everyone if they haven’t already, go back to the beginning of this forum and read all posts until you get back to mine. Then you will get several important ideas about how to prepare for any crisis, including natural and man-made way your dog disasters. From what I have read so far 45Caliber, Granny and independant thinker have their heads on correctly. They are wise people. I have been researching information on the ENP and Solar threats extensively and have concluded that the best method is to put something you “hope” will be protected from lightning, EMP or a solar flare is to place the item inside of a cardboard box, cover the box with heavy aluminum foil, insuring the end of the foil sheet is seemed upon the outter foil wall(electrical tape); then place this foiled box on a block of wood inside a metal box that is grounded to a grounding rod. The grounding rod must be in the ground at least 8-10 ft. A late model auto may be grounded using a metal chain to the dirt from its chasis. If the auto is parked on concrete inside a garage or metal framed building, one must ground the vehicle to a grounding rod or run a 10 guage wire to one of the metal studs used to frame the building. The main thing that is absolutely critical is to ground it. Unpluging appliances not in use will not protect it. Separating batteries from a device may work. As I understand EMP pulse instantly overcharges anything that is already charged (batteries) or connected to a power source. So, removed the power source. Grounding allows the pulse to bleed off an object as water drains off of plastic. One posting made mention of a social chaos senario where malitias and gangs go about the back alleys of cities and countryside of rural areas raping, steeling and burning. That is the sum of all fears and that must be planned for as well. If you have it, they want it at a great costs if necessary. All of the preps are done with HOPE that they will work. Nothing works in this life without Jesus Christ. We must trust in Him for all our preparation efforts as we direct our hearts but He directs our steps.

Reminds me of the “Y2K” doomsday scenario.

The rational behind this scare is that IF all of our existing generators, transformers and other equipment were somehow destroyed, it would be impossible to manufacture, or even install new equipment. (since there would be no power to pump fuel, etc)

As an Electrician, I see no reason to worry about such an event. Almost all electrical equipment is now manufactured in places such as Mexico and China!

Does that make you feel better?
