Organization Reports Antibiotic Overuse, Warns Of Consequences

New research indicates that people throughout the United States—especially in the Southeast— heavily overuse antibiotic drugs, which may accelerate the rate at which the drugs become useless as bacteria develop resistance to the medications.

The research, conducted by Extending the Cure, found that between 1997 and 2007 the number of antibiotics prescribed on the whole actually fell by about 12 percent, but the number of people who misguidedly take too many rounds of antibiotics rose. The overconsumption of antibiotic drugs is “alarmingly” higher in the Southeast when compared to States in the Pacific Northwest, the research says.

Among States with the highest antibiotic use in the Nation are West Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, Louisiana and Alabama. Extending the Cure contends that the high usage rates stem from patients demanding antibiotics from their doctors for illnesses caused by viruses, like cold and flu, which are not eliminated by antibiotics.

According to the research, the consequences of antibiotic overuse create a destructive cycle. Antibiotic resistance among bacteria increases—the drugs are already about seven times less effective against E. coli—so doctors prescribe more powerful antibiotics. The cycle accelerates until the drugs, no matter how powerful, might ultimately become completely ineffective against the resistant “superbugs” that the World Health Organization says these pharmaceuticals will help to create.

Doc! Give me a pill; I don’t feel good! Obviously, people are not willing to educate themselves about healthcare and prevention, so we need more public education on the matters. If more healthcare education was provided in schools, and also for adults via health departments, we would not have a such a healthcare crisis in this country.

Most people do not realize the amount of antibiotics that they consume in their food! Under USDA rules, all cattle, hogs and poultry must be treated with these drugs, and guess what? When you eat that food, you are receiving the antibiotic as well. Then, when you get sick, and take medication prescribed by your doctor, it doesn’t work! You have built an immunity to these antibiotics. It is very dangerous practices, and amazing that our own government agencies forces these drugs, including growth hormones, to be put into our food. And they want to tell us what we can and can not eat? Give me raw milk over drug laced beef any time!

Joyce, you KNOW. The dissenting progressives who responded to ths topic are worse than clueless – as usual. They ‘trust’ Uncle Scam. They worship Uncle Scam.
Before I forget, e, d and the rest of you robots must DEMAND that you get extra amounts of antibiotics whenever you go to an MD. IT WON’T HURT YOU, so stand up for your “rights.” Uncle Scam wouldn’t hurt you. Right? He’s your P A L.

Joyce, you better go spend some time on a farm. The USDA doesn’t order these things be added to an animal’s diet. In most cases, it is the rancher or farmer who decides he can get more meat to market at less cost to him if he does use these, although in most cases of heavy antibiotic usage, it is a corporate farm rather than a family farm, and the animals in question are being essentially force fed to get them to market weight as quickly as possible. As far as your raw milk goes, if you personally know the farmer who raises and milks the cows, and know for a fact that he has no diseases in his herd, you are reasonably save. Pasteurization was started because so much tuberculosis was being transmitted via raw milk.

CP, I live on a two hundred acre farm and own a smaller farm in NC. Yeah, I do know what is required, and have to deal with it every day.

      • s c

Joyce, I just noticed that one of the in-house rubes above thinks you should ‘find your way to a farm.’ I have to conclude (again) that Progressives and their ilk do NOT read OR understand the English language.
So much for the “cream” of public schools. Or, at least it’s true in their case(s). Maybe it was a typo [HA!].

CP is correct about those growth hormones and that is the ranchers and farmers not the government doing that. Those hormones have indeed made changes in the human body and I would agree that they are making us less healthy. This article is also a good reminder not to be demanding so many drugs or antibiotics when going to the doctor.

WTO? What the Obummer, that is. You name it, and it’s probably in the food supply. If the AMA/FDA crowd can’t ‘get you’ in an MD’s office, they’ll inject cows, pigs, sheep and anything that can be forced to stand still for a few seconds.
One way or another, those psychopaths want Americans sick and miserable with failing health. Then, you’ll be back to an MD’s office, where they didn’t get you the first time.
As if that’s not bad enough, check out life at your nearest VA. I don’t know how Uncle Scam defines ‘old,’ but it seems to be anyone who’s at least 20 and has been in the military.
Like the old adage says, with friends like these, you need NO enemies.’

SC is always so colorful and full of it at the same time! Were you the leading drama Queen at school?

I don’t understand how a “Bacteria” will develop resistance to the drug.

After all, wasn’t the drug suppose to kill the “Bacteria” in the first place?

If it was to chase them away, and we use the drug again when “Bacteria” returns, I can understand the “Bacteria” developing resistance to the drug.

    Just wondering.

      Evolution at work.

      • Bob from SoCal

Not evolution, but adaptation. Evolution has been refuted by most of the the worlds top biologists. Even Darwin said that if you do not find numerous transitional forms in the fossil record, that his hypothesis should be thrown out.

    “To conquer, first DIVIDE!”

What an amazing series of non sequitorial ignorance and misinformation, Bob? First, they would need to be micro-biologists
and they have confirmed, not refuted, the only mechanism of evolution
which is still subject to dispute, natural selection. The other two mechanism’s are fact: mutation and Mendelian genetics.

Evolution and it’s understanding, are entirely the subject of genetic
understanding: DNA and RNA. ( genomes ) To bring yourself up to speed,
provided you actually desire to understand these mechanism’s from
an empirical point of view, I recommend the following.

    Virolution: Frank Ryan

    Life Ascending: Nick Lane

If ignorance is required, feel free to remain where you are.

I worked in the Medical Field and have been saying this for years that antibiotics are wonderful tools to heal, but over use is dangerous!>.
We need to be exposed to germs in order to build immunity against them. Our immune systems were created to take care of us. I Liken it to a Force Field. Artificially & constantly supporting it with Antibiotics, reduces the immune systems ability to function and eventually will come to depend on the antibiotics that it’s fed. Think about it,how many of you, get a Cold sneezing coughing, after a round of Antibiotics?__Don’t run to the DR. everytime you have a hangnail, there is plenty of natural cures and remedies on the market, go for them first before the DR.
