Optimal Health is Your Birth Right

You don’t have to live in pain. You don’t have to suffer a chronic health condition that is non-life-threatening. You don’t ever need to be sick. The various pains, illnesses and diseases you “deal with” every day are not permanent fixtures in your life.

Yet, from early on, most of us are taught “to manage” or “to mask the symptoms of” and then later “to live with” our poor health conditions. This is perverse and goes against our homeostatic (self-balancing) nature. What’s more, despite lackluster results, too many people keep following the practices of a healthcare system that simply has not delivered on its promises.

Are we doing this because we don’t realize it’s not working?

What if I told you there was in place at this very moment a healthcare model to lose weight, be emotionally strong and illness free? Would you be interested in it? One would think so. But if I then explained that this same model allows 16.2 million adults to suffer from chronic asthma; that 16 percent of the followers have high cholesterol; that 25.1 million live with heart disease and 32 percent suffer hypertension; that one in every six followers of this program develop arthritis; and that a whopping 67 percent of the entire population on this program are clinically obese… would you still be interested?

I would think the fast answer is, “No.” Yet even with freedom of choice and an information superhighway available at our fingertips 24/7, we are still participating in this failed model of wellness called Western allopathic medicine. Are we insane?

Not sure that your ill health is not only not getting better with mainstream medicine but is actually getting worse? Then consider the sickening statistics.

Way back in 1996 only 77 million Americans were suffering in chronic pain. Today, that number is more than 150 million. That’s a 100 percent increase in a symptom in just over a dozen years of medical progress. Now that’s what I call Super Sizing!

Here are some of the current medical statistics from the United States, a nation that spends more resources per capita on healthcare than any other in the world.

  • Heart disease is the leading cause of death among Americans, killing nearly 27 percent of the population.
  • Twenty-three and a half million Americans over age 20 develop Type 2 Diabetes.
  • More than 26 million Americans between the ages of 20 and 64 experience frequent back pain.
  • More than 25 million Americans suffer from migraine headaches. And nine out of 10 Americans have other kinds of headaches each year.
  • Thirty-three percent of adult Americans lose more than 20 hours of sleep each month due to pain.
  • Each day 10 percent of adult Americans suffer from acid reflux.
  • Financially, pain accounts for 25 percent of all sick days taken by full-time workers, costing the economy $50 billion in lost work days and $3 billion in lost wages.

Each and every one of the above-mentioned “conditions” is rampant among adults, despite medical “progress.” Why? Because the medical system responsible for that progress is based on a flawed model of health.

Simply put, mainstream medicine fails to eradicate people’s everyday pains, illnesses and diseases. It fails because it is passive and reactionary and thus is unable to prevent you from experiencing chronic health conditions like heart disease, diabetes, hypertension, obesity, stress, anxiety, depression, headache, back pain, tendonitis, colitis, metabolic syndrome, irritable bowel syndrome, Raynaud’s syndrome, Alzheimer’s disease and hundreds of others.

And this model will always fall short because it uses “disease” as its basis of finding health. That is, you see your primary care physician when you are ill, the doctor diagnosis your illness, labels the disease, then prescribes a protocol for treating that disease. Your personal health issues are “managed” by prescription medication, various therapy and surgery. Such a model can never hope to cure your daily non-terminal health problems, yet these are the important issues you face and that steadily undermine your quality of life.

So, who am I and why should you believe in what I say?

I am Dr. Mark Wiley and I know how you feel. I suffered from severe chronic headaches and musculoskeletal pain my entire life. Like you, as I went from doctor to doctor, desperately hoping for relief, no one could help me. Every day was a soul-destroying battle with neck and shoulder pain, mid-back pain, hip pain and head pain. Pain, pain, pain.

Unlike some chronic pain sufferers, I was fortunate enough to have support. My parents are both healthcare professionals. Unfortunately, even with their love, direction and referral to experts in various specialty fields, the suffering was constant, unbearable and unrelenting. I was forever putting myself in front of medical doctors, osteopaths, naturopaths, chiropractors, physical therapists, psychologists, allergists, body workers, hypnotists and dieticians. No treatment or surgery had lasting results.

I became proactive in college. In addition to studying medical anthropology, I was in close contact with dozens of mind/body health practitioners around the country. I became a research assistant at Harvard Medical School, looking into how to combine various mind/body methods for pain relief and even using martial art drills as vehicles to create altered states of consciousness. Yet despite all this, the net results were underwhelming. I was finally forced to face the fact that conventional Western medicine and many of the so-called “complementary medicines” were unable to heal me. So I became the Marco Polo of pain.

I began traveling, tracking down rumors of cures for pain and suffering to be found in far away places with strange-sounding names. Reiki and qigong in Japan, tui na in Taiwan, acupuncture and traditional herbs in Singapore, faith healing and bone-setting in the Philippines, spiritualists and medicine men in Malaysia. Been there, done that, designed the tee shirt. Yes, as with Western doctoring there was some short-term relief, but the pain always returned. Always. Then one day, I had had enough and decided to make a final desperate change in my life’s direction.

What did I do?

I became a doctor of Oriental and alternative medicine to cure myself. And over the past 10 years of treating patients and lecturing worldwide, I have developed a proactive self-directed, self-cure model of optimal health and pain-free living. And I will share it with you here every Tuesday.

        My pain is actually in my left hip and comes and goes. I work out at the gym regularly and work on a balance 1/2 ball for stability. I can’t seem to shake the hip pain though. Once I start moving around it gets better. thanks

          Dear Sandy,
          What you are experiencing is actually quite common. The pain gets better once you start moving because your body is warming up and the blood is moving more quickly. If this is common for you, then using a heating pad (or hot rub on cream) in times of pain and also before a workout will help much. Also, eating foods containing aromatic spices will increase the metabolism and interior heat generation of your body, thus also helping.

    My girlfriend, Wendy, 36 yrs. young sufferes from chronic back pain. She has 2 buldging and 2 herniated disks in her back. Laser Spine Institute, Tampa, says that they can help however, with her Medicare program there’s an $18,000 dollar out-of-pocket costs… Can you help?

      Greetings, Bill.
      This is a very strong topic for a forthcoming article. The problem is, many people indeed have bulging or herniated discs their entire lives and never know it. Why? Because they have no pain or other symptom. Yet, when they one day experience back pain and the docs do an xray or scan and find a herniation, they say “Hey, here is the culprit! Let’s do surgery.” More than 50% of back surgeries are useless and unnecessary. Your girlfriend’s pain could be caused by something else… or it could indeed be the discs.

      I will write an article on this in more detail and you can then discuss with your healthcare provider the options available. Not knowing your personal situation, it is impossible for me to say.

      Hello, Wanda.
      There are some common threads that can cause each of the isues you mention. These include: too much fat, sugar, dairy, coffee in your diet and/or lack of water, sound sleep and physical movement. Also, a too acid pH can be lurking in the shadows.

      If you are not already, consider an exercise program or daily “movement” routine, establishing a set sleep/wake routine, drinking enough water all day so that your urine is clear, and eating more aromatic spices in your meals, such as ginger, garlic, onion, coriander, turmeric.

      A good massage or two, hot shower, and a colon cleanse should also help a good bit. Stoking the metabolism, detoxing, getting deep sleep and moving the blood are the keys.

    My husband battles migraines and also has pain in his mid back at times and in his lower back. He has an enlarged nukal ligament at the back of this neck right under his hairline. He wanted it removed. He felt it was the culprit. Of course, they are not going to remove his ligament, but if he lays with his head back and tries to paint or work where his head is back, it prompts a migraine. He also has battled migraines nonrelated to this. We have had the xrays, the MRI’s and been to the neurosurgeons who said his neck is not that severe and that tney do not recommend surgery now or ever. We were referred to a pain specialist who did the cortisone shots, and they only lasted a short time. He was to do a racz procedure in his neck, and the insurance would not approve as they say it is a relatively new procedure. They did a sample test of that procedure and said it would help for several days. It actually helped for several weeks. We watch his diet, and in fact, he had allergy testing and got totally off all most all foods and then gradually added them back, avoiding the ones that might contribute to migraines. When we were in Tucson, he had accupuncture, paid an enormous price, and had no relief—the woman tried to incorporate everything she knew in the session–had me making notes for all these teas,etc that he could try. He went one other time to my son’s accupuncturist and did like her, but it did not relieve the migraine. We live in New Mexico in a small town with not much access to some medical and alternative medicine that a large city might have. Any suggestions and advice would be welcome.

      I am sorry for all the suffering and running around. I know it oh so well. Without an examination of my own it is impossible for me to know what the situation is and how to specifically help. However, here are some things to consider…

      1. Acupuncture alone has not been shown to help classic migraine. Other headaches, yes. But not true migraine. That is why most acupuncturists also add Chinese herbal formulas with treatment to help. The most common for migraine include “Tien Ma Guo Teng Wan” and “Pian Tou Tong Wan.” Have a look on line for information.

      Diet is a big factor with migraines. However, it is not so much which food individually triggers the headache, as how many can be consumed in what amount of time before pain sets in. For me personally, I can consume 4 known headache trigger foods within a 2-day period with no headache. But make that 5 in two days or 4 in one day, and I will be on my back. Experiment with number of different foods in combination over time and see what you find.

      I have headaches from time to time, usually caused by my back not being in alignment. Had an excellent chiropractor for years who kept me in good shape, sometimes I did not even see him but every other year. I have tried others but have not found one who was excellent as he was. However, I am writing to mention that I had migraines on and off for over twenty years before I discovered that although I could eat cheese, cheddar being my favorite, and I could eat chocolate, IF I had them on the same day, even at different meals I would then get a 24 hour migraine that was almost debilitating. It is possible that you are allergic to something or two something’s as I am. I seldom forget these days which day is a cheese day and which day is a chocolate day and have no problem eating cheese or chocolate, just not on the same day. I have also found that a can of a particular southern vegetable with seasonings cause me the same kind of headache. I have no problem with eating the vegetable canned or fresh with just salt and pepper or organic butter but the one with seasonings I avoid completely. God bless you.

        S.C., thank you for your insights. Indeed, food triggers for migraines are tricky. Some people can have coffee and are fine; others have a sip and get a headache. Mostly, I have found that people experience their headaches related to diet, when the combination of certain trigger foods reaches a certain level. The key, then, is to keep notes on the quantity you can eat, and the combinations you can have UNTIL you get a headache. Then always stay below that quantity and avoid those combinations!

      Geo, Chrones is very difficult. The best defense is a good offense and that means preventing the intenstinal inflammation. If you have not done so already, stop eating wheat and all wheat/flower products (bread, dough, cake, pretzels, cereal, etc) , as well as all dairy products (milk, cheese, yogurt, ice cream) and also nightshade foods (egg plant, bell peppers, etc). Then, drink plenty of filtered water and foods that reduce inflammation, like turmeric and ginger.

      I will write an article on this soon. In the meantime, I hope this has hepled a bit.

    It seems whatever I do I end up in pain, like sewing, sitting, standing, and lying down. I don`t sleep well, and of course am overweight.I can lose 10# then it levels off and no more loss.I have a lot of stress in my life, and suffer with sinus headaches. Is there any help for me. I feel like I`m not living just exsisting until the Good Lord calls me home. I am 79, my husband is 94 and has Alzheimers.

      Bless you, Maybelle. I don’t want you to be in pain. I think the main issues is weight. Because weight and the foods that cause it, create sluggish metabolism and digestion, poor absorption and distribution of nutrients and low energy.

      Best things you can do is walk several times per day and move your body (if you are able), drink plenty of water and white tea and stay away from coffee, soda, black tea, juice. Avoid sugar, white flower, fried food, oily food and too much dairy. And eat more fresh veggies, whole grains and fresh fruit.

      I will do my best to address more of this in the coming weeks. Until then, please see what you can do from the above suggestions.

    I have arthritis in the lower back and it only hurts when I rake leaves or run a vacuum but after some chiropractic visits it doesn’t hurt as much as it did. I do have acid reflux but take Slippery Elm Bark and that keeps it under control. My husband now has arthritis in his hands and at this time the right one is badly swollen and very hot, he puts ice on it and giving him Tylenol for the pain he has, he has dementia and doesn’t have any understanding or comprehension also has a leaky valve and enlarged heart. I take Lisinopril 20mg for high blood pressure. Via niacin and eating oatmeal and grapefruit, fish twice a week and cut a lot of things our of our diet mine has gone down by 100 points in two years.

      I have migraines also and have found that the following helps. Don’t get dehydrated – drink plenty of water; avoid low blood sugar – eat smaller meals more ofter; watch posture – head held forward tightens the neck muscles, head is heavy, should rest on spine; avoid eye strain. Biggest thing is to not eat too acid a diet – more fruits and veggies, less meat, starch and sweets. You can buy strips to test the Ph of your saliva. Ask your doctor to prescribe either a drug for epilepsy, depression or high blood pressure. Taken daily these reduce the severity of migraines. I found the least side effects with Dilantin, also cheapest. Also try taking magnesium and good B vitamin comples. Hope this helps.

      I’m almost totally cured of migraines. I have found that what you eat has a big bearing on them—-such as sugar, fats, chocolate, dairy products. Just cutting down on these has helped me so much. Also be very careful what you eat at bedtime. I try not to eat after 7 PM, and that helps too.

    I have osteoarthritis of the spine causing degenerative discs in my lower back and neck. I can’t raise my arms or reach behind me without excruciating pain in my arms. I have tried many doctors including orthopedic doctors, chiropractors, and pain management doctors. They don’t really help. I’m told that this is a chronic pain for life situation and other than controlling the pain, there isn’t anything they can do. Do you have any suggestions or advice that might help?

      The “cure” for osteoarthritis is found in keeping the body warm, moving the joints, strengthening the muscles and doing “load bearing” exercises like listing weights or boxes. Load bearing exercises builds bone density and this help stop the decline of osteoarthritis. Please read my article from last week on arthritis and implement those suggestions (in addition to stretching and lifting)… in the future I will write one specifically on osteoarthritis.

      Yes indeed. I am pain free… except when it is self-induced, like eating or drinking the wrong things, exercising too hard without proper warm up, sleeping crooked or not enough. But then, it is easy to remove again :)

    I look forward to what information and suggestions you might provide in the future. I am 68 years old, weigh 140 and am about 5′ 7″. I stretch pretty much daily, run for about 45-55 minutes once a week (have been running for over 35 years), and do weights a couple of times a week. In other words, I try to take care of body and eat decently. I do have the usual aches and pains that come along with the proactive approach to exercise but work through them while trying to be cognizant of what my body is telling me. I do have two major problems, 1) stenosis in the neck area, and 2) a 15 mm bone spur on the right heel where the achilles inserts (I use foot/arch inserts and tuli cups that help with the running…and of course the stretching helps). Both of those conditions suggest I have a problem with calcium buildup and wondered if you have encountered anything that might help with this? The heel spur probably began as an injury tied to running with bad shoes and poor stretching in Korea; that I foolishly tried to ‘run through’. I get some relief in the neck from occasional ‘safe’ chiropractic..I am fearful of non-safe methods with such a condition. I do take the occasional vicodin or neurontin but don’t like to take too many meds.

    Since I know the heel spur began with an injury (I have put off surgery), I would appreciate any information about the neck stenosis and the role calcium buildup might play. It might be useful for others as well if you can work that into you articles.

      Dear Bill,
      There is feel-good pain and injury-pain. If you feel injury-pain, then stop what you are doing or more damage will result. Spinal stenosis and bone spur need to be dealt with on an ongoing basis. Stretching the calf muscle will help the spur, but I also suggest one Chinese patent herbal formula for both problems. It is called “Kang Gu Zeng Sheng Pian” (aka, Osteophyte Support) and you can Google it and read about it to see if you think it is right for you. However, if you are not dedicated to take it 3 times a day for 3-6 weeks, you will derive very little benefit. So have a look and see what you think. It is commonly used in Chinese medicine for such issues, as well as osteo arthritis.

    I am a 66 yo WM who is 3 years p.o. Type A Thoracic Aortic dissection repair plus Ao valve replacement & Septal repair. I have Osteoarthritis in both knees (one had Arthroscopic surg 7 years ago; with no lasting benefits)and in entire spine (spurring @ multiple levels and disc compression at 2-3 Thoracic levels), all of which give me almost continuous pain.
    I am mobile & self-sufficient widower, but my exercise capacity is very limited. Pain is helped by Nsaids, P.R.N., & keeping active.
    Also, I had CLL confirmed 4 years ago, which is dormant so far.

    i’ve been in chronic daily pain for 6 years. my left epididymis is swollen and enlarged. pain goes from there up the illioinguinal nerve all the way to my hip. 3 urologists have done nothing except to tell me to take motrin. IDIOTS. the head of urology at baystate medical center in springfield, ma said the epididymis isn’t large enough to remove and removal might not stop the pain anyway. refered to a pain clinic. they gave a couple shots over several months which numbed the area for a day each time. i’ve refused drugs offered because i don’t want to be a zombie. other than any real concern or compassion what really angers me is that in my own search i found that sclerotherapy has had alot of success but none of these clowns know about it or will do it. and i gave them copies of the information off pub med.       Dear Tom,
      In Chinese medicine they say such problems are caused by “damp heat” and “toxic heat” in the lower cavity of the body. The solution is to clear the residual heat, quicken the blood, transform phlegm, warm the kidneys and stop the pain.

      There is a Chinese patent herbal medicine that is commonly used to treat your condition, as well as prostate, urinary tract infection, etc. It is called “Qian Lie Xian” capsules (aka “Te Xiao Qian Lie Xian Wan”). Look these names up on Google, read about this formula and see if it is right for you. The standard dose is 4 capsules 3x daily until resolved (perhaps a month or two).

    My sister was injuired eight years ago at a Retail job, the docotor thought she tore her rotator cuff and treated her at a local hospital. Then the docotors recommended surgery and she wound up with chronic pain in her shoulder area. She has tried several of the common solutions for this type of pain and has seen many pain management doctors also, but she is still in constant pain. What could you recommend for her?

      Dear Paula,
      Rotator Cuff injuries are troublesome. The best I can say for now is the keep the area warm, the blood moving and the inflammation down. Heat, slow movements, walking, diet high in aromatic spices and a natural anti-inflammatory are key.

      Exercise every day, even walking for 20 minutes at an elevated pace will help a lot. Removing simple carbohydrates from diet (sugar, white bread, pasta, etc) will help enormously. Eating food that increase metabolism is essential, and these include ginger, onion, turmeric, cloves, garlic. Next week’s article is on “Food for Pain” and will give you more insight. Without changing your diet and moving your body, your situation will remain the same.

        Dr. Wiley, I suggest you start with published dangers of consuming artificial sweeteners (via reputable journals and scientific groups, not firms that manufacture artificial sweeteners).
        American MDs claim America has an obesity pandemic. Can artificial sweeteners have a direct role in causing weight problems and other health issues? Also, I’d like to know what you think about MDs who tell their diabetic patients to ‘go ahead’ and consume artificial sweeteners in soda and food(s). Thanks.

    Have had three car wrecks, hit from behind at stop lights and stop signs, my neck hurts me all the time I can not get a good nights sleep because of the pain, also have lower back pain, and weight problem, have lost 20 pounds in one month so far,and plan to lose at least 60 mores pounds!

    Really want to learn to remove the problem of pain not mask it, my parents where on all kinds of Doctor prescript drugs and I know that that is why they are no long with us!

    Help! Does anyone know a cure for Tinitus (ringing in the ears)? I have it constantly, and so loud at times that I can’t talk on the phone. Specialists and MDs don’t seem to know what causes it or what takes it away. I’ve tried a lot of things, like a special diet, drops from Health Food Store, but nothing really helps. Any suggestions?

    Look forward to reading your column Dr. Wiley. – I am 40 and have had that I thought were some low back issues. After visiting multiple Doctors, Chiropractors, and Orthopedic specialists I finally had one specialist notice on my X-ray film that my hips are about 50% displastic and I am only noticing now. We suspect that what I thought was sciatic nerve pain is actually a hip issue and that the only procedure is a hip osteotomy – and I am not really interested in doing this. Anyway I plan to follow your writing – and please advise if you have any input about this condition or premptively dealing with osteo-arthritis.

    I have no questions for Dr. Wiley. I’d like to thank him for having an open mind (and not being too lazy to READ). That puts him above most American MDs, as far as I’m concerned.
    Many fascinating discoveries and therapies are being developed and proven on a regular basis. If anything will help motivate people to take an interest in their own health care, it’s the comrade obama circus and its ‘destroy it and try to re-build it’ insanity.
    MDs and all health care professionals who are tired of the AMA dictatorship in health care (and FDA incompetence) need to band together and help the rest of us put bureaucrats, career criminals in Washington and MDs who put MONEY at all costs before the health of their patients in their place. We need and deserve quality health care. Social engineering disguised as health care must be ‘surgically removed’ and obliterated.

    I am 65 and at heart I feel I am still 17. The only visible change I experience is that I have to wear spectacles to do my reading.I would like to share some of my experience about healthy living. Mind you, it is not Gospel truth that could serve as a model for anybody, because no two persons’ systems function the same way.
    I started doing meditation, even deep meditation, at a very early age thanks to a relative who as a priest visited my uncle’s place quite often and made us practise some of the ASANAS (physical postures & exercises). Now I can lose myself completely, physically and mentally, within seconds.
    I have been a lover of music, Hindustani music more precisely,since a very young age and I started writing songs and setting them to tune eversince. I have a collection of my own songs running to some 500. They are my friends and my support whenever I am strained by the hard truths of life.
    I have had a very difficult childhood. I had to labour sometimes as a labourer, a cow-keeper, a vegetable grower and seller and what not from dawn to dusk to help my parents make both ends meet. Every weekday I even had to go to the mountainside to gather fodder before and after school hours…
    With the meagre pay I got as trainee-teacher, I managed to own a house before my marriage. I contributed a large part of the labour.
    What I’m here trying to share is that I was so lost in my endeavour that the years did trickle by without my noticing it. My father had taught me not to conciously hurt anybody’s feelings, more especially one’s own parents and the poor. He once told me that the curse from a wounded self is as disastrous as a wild fire that can turn to ashes the most magnificent of palacves. He told me that in 1890 or so, he was working in a shop and handling gunny bags of notes for his employer, but he had never been tempted to take a single note.
    The petty mistakes one does make in life can be atoned for when you realise that man is born with fraities but that they should not be made to govern us. Only God is believed to be flawless. Frailty, thy name is Man.
    Meditation has taught me to talk to my inner self and ask for help in my worst days. The following days, my problems would be partially or wholly solved in my mind. The subconscious mind is your best friend. He will not let you down, unless you grow so proud and one-sided that the solutions are neither visible nor accessible.
    I am not defiant vis-a-vis my problems. I befriend my problems and try to find out what lessons or experiece they want to teach me.
    I better stop here. There is still a lot to impart but time and space are beckoning me to stop.

    I have chronic shoulder pain from from what i believe to be arthritis with my right shoulder for about 15 years now. in particular in cold places like hockey rinks damp places ect. Can this model of treatment help? I have this pain on and off however more on than off it seem last 5 years

    Hello David! Sorry, it’s only today that I came across your plea. I would advise you to access Swami Ramdev’s website through the internet and to learn the basic inhale exhale exercise known as Kapalbhati. Exercise it one hour everyday early in the morning before you join office. You will surely be ok after a month or two. Kapalbhati helps to rejuvinate the control systems in the body, namely at the gonads, kidneys, umbillical, heart and brain regions. You should do it with the stomach empty in a sitting posture. It should help you to thin out any excessive fats in the body or to provide fats to a body with insufficient fats. Best of luck!
