Olive Oil Consumption Can Help Breast Cancer Survivors Lose Weight, Lower Risk Of Recurrence

June 11, 2010 by

Olive oil consumption can help breast cancer survivors lose weight, lower risk of recurrence Breast cancer survivors can safely lose weight by consuming a diet rich in plant-based olive oil, according to a new Miriam Hospital study. Previous research has suggested that post-menopausal breast cancer patients can lower their risk of developing a recurrence by maintaining a healthy weight throughout the treatment process and beyond.

For the study, lead researcher Mary Flynn and her colleagues enrolled 44 clinically overweight women over the age of 50 who were diagnosed with invasive breast cancer, and assigned them to follow an olive oil-based diet or a standard low-calorie diet.

After eight months, four out of five women who followed the plant-based olive oil diet lost more than 5 percent of their original weight. In contrast, only 31 percent of those who enrolled in the low-calorie diet attained similar results.

Flynn noted that the majority of patients involved in the study did not know there is a link between cancer recurrence and body mass index.

"That’s why it was important for us to compare these two diets and determine which one the women not only enjoyed following, but also produced the best weight loss, because that’s the diet they’re more likely to stick with," she said.
