Obamacare Hitting Dems In Generic Congressional Races

WASHINGTON (UPI) — The flap over the botched rollout of the Affordable Care Act cut into the Democrats’ lead into the battle for the U.S. Congress next year, a CNN poll indicated.

The CNN-ORC poll, released Tuesday, indicates Republicans hold a 49 percent-47 percent edge over Democrats in a generic ballot that asked registered voters to choose between an unidentified Democrat and Republican in their Congressional district. A month ago, Democrats held a 50 percent-to-42 percent lead.

The 10-percentage point swing follows the uproar over the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare, which included the botched rollout of Healthcare.gov and controversy over insurance policy cancellations.

The turnaround in the CNN-ORC poll is similar to shifts reported by other recent national surveys.

“There is just under a year to go before any votes are actually cast and the ‘generic ballot’ question is not necessarily a good predictor of the actual outcome of 435 separate elections,” CNN Polling Director Keating Holland cautioned.

Results are based on nationwide phone surveys of 843 adults, including 740 registered voters, conducted Nov. 18-20. The overall margin of error is 3.5 percentage points.
