Obama Wants ‘Secretary Of Business’

October 30, 2012 by

Obama Wants ‘Secretary Of Business’

President Barack Obama, seeking to embolden his weak record on American business, said that he would appoint a “secretary of Business” if he is elected to a second term in the White House.

The President said in a recent interview that he would consolidate a number of government business agencies to create a “one-stop shop” for business oversight.

“I’ve said that I want to consolidate a whole bunch of government agencies. We should have one secretary of Business, instead of nine different departments that are dealing with things like giving loans to SBA [the Small Business Administration] or helping companies with exports,” he said in an interview with MSNBC.

Under a proposal that Obama put forth in January, six government commerce and trade agencies — including the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative and the Export-Import Bank — would be combined under one Federal agency. He also suggested the SBA should have a seat in the Presidential cabinet.

Congress was not enthusiastic about the President’s proposal, and the initiative failed to gain the support needed to move forward.

Despite Obama’s attempts to appeal to America’s business community, Republican Presidential candidate Mitt Romney is continuing with a message that paints the President as a decidedly anti-business candidate.

Now if Romney had suggested such a proposal you all would be leaping for joy and bragging about his “business experience”. LOL!!! Republicans say government should consolidate and be more business friendly yet when Obama suggest such an endeavor the right wing sock puppets come out swinging against him. No wonder nothing gets done in Washington!

      • Vicki

“No wonder nothing gets done in Washington!”

If only that were true. Alas a lot of stuff gets done in Washington and we have many many laws that restrict a free people far beyond what the founders envisioned.

      • MattN

Eddie, why is he making this suggestion now? Could it be because Mitt is whipping him and he has been death on business so far since he has been president?

        • tony newbill

The way to help business is for the government to get out of the way of business. This is a joke.

  • Ted Crawford

What, one must wonder, would this Secretary’s policies be like? Energy Secertary Chu, restricts any form of energy not controlled by an Obama bundler, EPA Secretary Jackson, would regulate how many times you breath and blink your eyes if she could! Secretary Salazar, would be very happy to turn over control of all our land to Obama!
This individule would surly be no different, aren’t we yet in a sorry enough economic state to satisfy Obama? How much worse would he have it become? !!

  • mike

More gov.job just get the hell out of the way American will take care there self no more obummer help

  • Dave Gunn

Typical Obama. The solution to every problem is more and bigger government. We don’t need a Secretary of Business. We already have a Secretary of Commerce that we don’t need.

What businesses all over American want is for the federal government to get out of their way – to reduce taxes and burdensome regulations. Until that is done, businesses that are able will continue to vote with their feet and go to where they have better opportunity.

    • Deerinwater

Interesting statement, “Typical Obama. The solution to every problem is more and bigger government. We don’t need a Secretary of Business. We already have a Secretary of Commerce that we don’t need.”

It sound as if Obama is attempting to streamline government and make government more effective and responsive to the needs of business and this is being met with great resistance to any change, while most would agree change is needed, hopefully for the better.

I can understand such resistance on the Hill, they don’t like change, change to anyone on the Hill means giving up or sharing power and position. It means sharing and infighting for funding for each departmental budget. That they may not be very effective at what they do, they can pass the blame to another department.

As I understand it, the Chamber of Commerce is where we might find all the Lobbyist on any given day.

I have great condensed some material for your pleasure and amusement ~ this is what “We the People” are dealing with and what any administration must address to address business today, for it’s entirety see, Lobbying in the US, growth of lobbying

” In May 2009, the Recovery Act Lobbying Rules.[103] The Executive Branch Reform Act, H.R. 985, was a bill which would have required over 8,000 Executive Branch officials to report into a public database nearly any “significant contact” from any “private party.” The purpose was to identify lobbying activity.[104] The bill was supported by proponents as an expansion of “government in the sunshine” including groups such as Public Citizen.[104]”

“The U.S. Department of Justice raised constitutional and other objections to the bill.[106] Opponents mobilized over 450 groups including the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and National Association of Realtors with letter writing campaigns against the proposed restrictions. Lobbyist Howard Marlowe argued in a “stern letter”[56] that the restriction on gift-giving to federal employees would create “fear of retribution for political donations”:

The letter read; “Since your announcement to seek the Presidency you have consistently attacked the honorable profession of lobbying … Lobbyists play an important role in the legislative process, serving as educators to elected officials. It is in the best interest to government to have informed individuals who serve as experts in every arena of public policy. Our ability to access and navigate the legislative process and push issues forward through a bureaucratic cluster is a vital service to the nation. The Draft Order would inhibit one of the most vital tools in the advocate’s arsenal by creating fear of retribution for political donations. Making this kind of disclosure a part of the bidding process tarnishes a competition based on qualifications, adds an unneeded level of bureaucracy, and endangers the protection of free speech afforded to all Americans by the First Amendment of the Constitution…
—Howard Marlowe, president of the All American League of Lobbyists, in a letter to President Obama, May 31, 2011[56][101]”

“Every citizen is a special interest… Blacks, consumers, teachers, pro-choicers, gun control advocates, handicapped people, aliens, exporters, and salesmen — are all special interests… There is not an American today who is not represented (whether he or she knows it or not) by at least a dozen special interest groups. … One person’s special interest is another person’s despotism…
—Donald E. deKieffer, author of The Citizen’s Guide to Lobbying Congress, 2007[4"

"Sometimes defining clearly who is a "lobbyist" and what precisely are lobbying activities can be difficult. According to the Lobbying Disclosure Act, several authorized definitions include:
Lobbying activities means "lobbying contacts and efforts in support of such contacts, including preparation and planning activities, research and other background work that is intended, at the time it is performed, for use in contacts, and coordination with the lobbying activities of others."[24]
Lobbying contact means “any oral or written communication (including an electronic communication) to a covered executive branch official or a covered legislative branch official”.[24]”

“There are numerous regulations governing the practice of lobbying, often ones requiring transparency and disclosure.[7] People paid to lobby must register with the secretary of the Senate and the clerk of the House of Representatives within 45 days of contacting a legislator for the first time, or 45 days after being employed.[4][7] An exception is that lobbyists who earn less than $3,000 per client for each fiscal quarter, or whose total lobbying expenses are less than $11,500 each quarter, do not need to register.”

“Laws requiring disclosure have been more prevalent in the twentieth century. In 1946, there was a so-called “sunshine law” requiring lobbyists to disclose what they were doing, on whose behalf, and how much they received in payment.[4][115] The resulting Federal Regulation of Lobbying Act (1946) governed lobbying rules up until 1995 when the Lobbying Disclosure Act replaced it.”

“Scandals can spur impetus towards greater regulation as well. The Jack Abramoff Indian lobbying scandal, which started in the 1990s and led to a guilt plea in 2006, inspired the ‘Legislative Transparency and Accountability Act of 2006′ (S. 2349). According to Time Magazine the Senate bill:
      barred lobbyists themselves from buying gifts and meals for legislators, but left a loophole in which firms and organizations represented by those lobbyists could still dole out gifts and perks;
      allowed privately funded trips if lawmakers got prior approval from a commissioned ethics committee;
required lobbyists to file frequent and detailed activity reports and have them posted publicly. The bill was approved in 2006 by a 90-8 vote.”

“Jack Abramoff, emerging from prison, has spoken publicly about lobbying. In his view, regulations designed to rein in the excesses of lobbying have not been effective, and that reforms and regulations have not cleaned up the system “at all”. Abramoff said lobbyists could “find a way around just about any reform Congress enacted”, and gave an example:
You can’t take a congressman to lunch for $25 and buy him a hamburger or a steak or something like that … But you can take him to a fund-raising lunch and not only buy him that steak, but give him $25,000 extra and call it a fund-raiser — and have all the same access and all the same interactions with that congressman.
—Jack Abramoff, commenting on 60 Minutes, according to CNN[46″

Now for an overview that puts it all together and help us understand the roots of our unhappiness today and the defining moment government became part of the problem

Typical Obama you say? ~ I believe you might be one to fight the fireman attempting to put your house out. LOL! hahahehe ~ it’s complicated, not simple, ~ and far too much money involved for a simple mind, ~ willing to be persuaded to whats best for you by a well dressed nice man that drives a new shinny car.

This “lobbing” is the roots of crony capitalism that so many speak of today and along with predatory banking and health care insurers, they are slowly bleed Americans dry to where there will only be two classes of American citizens, the haves and the have nots. Any hope of achieving the Great American Dream narrowed down to only a select few, making it much more difficult for future generations of Americans to aspire to the level our parents did.

Me? ~ I’m old , I’ve been burying friends and family for years and soon it will be my turn. I don’t matter and “it” doesn’t matter ~ the finish line is in sight ~ but what can I leave behind to help those that follow?

      • tony newbill

DEER IN WATER great attempt to SPIN support for Obama BUT …… you forgot one little factor , GDP says EPA is way way way to Abusive for Obama to be as PRO BUSINESS as you describe …..

  • ableton

Mr President will probably pen this one in as an executive order if congress fails to pass on this whim. I am sure one of the duties of the secretary of business is to track income and wealth so he can get the IRS to bill the correct amount on an annual basis. He be needin’ mo money fo mo food stampz.

  • johnC

We do not need another “Secretary of Business” or Business Czar this speaks more of the presidents Incompetence…we appoint this person to shift the blame from Obama it is just another layer to insulate the president from blame for his actions …and another spot for one of his Chicago thug politicians to fill costing us more money with a do nothing appointee…how bout this Obama we fire you in November

I suggest We the People ask for a right to review the job performance should discrepancies such as invalid credentials, derelictionof duty and treasonous behavior such as the endorsement of gun smuggling or being unable to perform when American soil is attacked…..serious actions should motivate, serious failures should demote.

There needs to be serious questioning of all elected officials when their job performance becomes questionable and their loyalty in response to their pledge of office is in conflict…

  • duckyack

He wants another czar answerable only to HIM! It’s much harder to undo Obamaism once it has a foothold. I don’t doubt we continue to feel the after effects, of what has already been put in place, for decades.

  • auhunter

A great idea, in his promise to shrink government during his campaign, why didn’t he get together with Congress and work it out earlier in his campaign instead of waiting until the last minute. Why? Because he didn’t think of it until the last minute when he saw his re-election bid going down the tubes.

    • auhunter

Meant to say earlier in his term of office instead of “campaign”.

  • s c

Just what we need – another fricking government agency. Someone remind me . . . we have a new herd of political geniuses in Washington and they don’t understand that we already have a Commerce Department. Can you say UNINFORMED? Can you say off-the-chart DUH?
Obummer could have saved a lot of time and money if he’d nixed the idea of czars, and imported a temporary ‘head’ of business from North Korea. You see, Obummer just doesn’t get it. Next, I suppose we’ll see a “need” for a Toilet Department, so certain politicians can learn to find their way to and from the nearest bathroom (assuming that they know how to flush a toilet – without help).
What universe do these people come from? It’s just about enough to DEMAND that everyone in this criminally corrupt and mentally deficient administration be FORCED to take Prozac. Parents, adults, responsible people of America, DON’T let others become utopians.

Search “$43 Trillion Lawsuit” to see what some of other famous “czars” have done. Just filed in federal court in Brooklyn last week by Spire Law Group LLC – it names Timothy Geitner, Eric Holder, Valerie Jarrett, Anita Dunn, and a host of others. The suit says big banks, ‘banksters’ and the government conspired to hide proceeds from bad mortgages and non-repayment of TARP funds by the banks in offshore accounts. The suit says the government never filed a criminal complaint against the banks because they were lending money to Obama’s campaign. The media WON’T mention this lawsuit, because the financial news network CNBC ran the headline on the 25th, but pulled it on the 26th, after two of executive vice president Kevin Krim’s children were murdered, supposedly by their nanny. When I ran the search, I actually found an article from Yahoo news financial section regarding the suit, but nothing from any other MSM.

    • s c

Troop, now that we finally have some books written about Obummer and what is and what isn’t between his huge ears, we need a bunch of books written about his ‘czars.’ What we’ve had for over 3 years amounts to nothing less than the worst group of antisocial, corrupt, wacked-out herd of sociopaths ever assembled in an administration.
What’s so spooky about it is the FACT that Obummer and his sold-out utopian scummers want us to believe is the idea that those people are somehow “GOOD” for America. Oh, well, what should we expect from an Incompetent-in-Chief who doesn’t know the difference between corps and corpse – or the FACT that America has 50 states (not 57). All that ‘education,’ and he’s still a Chicago LOSER.

  • tony newbill

After watch Obama On Leno talk about his views of People Who Profit , ……. My question becomes if Obama is going to be so Harsh on Resource supply Expansion with regulation from the Extremist ran Agencies like the EPA and those extremist NGOs suing at the drop of a Hat over resource productions then how does supply expand and profiting be the way we FIRST FEED a Growing POPULATION and Second to generate a tax rate large enough to pay off the National debt and balance the entitlement programs , if the so called rich are not able to grow and Profit enough with Obamas Over regulations and Limits to Capital Formation ????

Obamas MOTTO is , ” It will Trickle down from ME or it won’t trickle down at all ” !!!! and that means get use to 8 % average unemployment and 1.5 % GDP because that Pleases my Environmentalist Marxist Bolsheviks base of supporters , right Mr. President ??

  • spartacus !!!!!!!

@ eddie47 please, please !!!! go out and play in traffic !!!! , you are a waste of a human !!!!

  • rightgunner

The lead contender for the Obama Secretary of Business is certainly the “First Time” Lady.

  • bakerjohn

LOL What a joke MORE BLOATED government bureaucrats and more bureaucracy to stifle business, was to be expected from the community organizer.
