Obama, Republicans Post-Campaign Campaigning Over Taxes

November 29, 2012 by

Obama, Republicans Post-Campaign Campaigning Over Taxes
Mitt Romney and Barack Obama will meet today for lunch.

President Barack Obama and failed Republican Presidential candidate Mitt Romney will meet today for the first time since the election for a private lunch at the White House.

During his victory speech, Obama told supporters that he would meet with Romney so that the two could share ideas about how Republicans and Democrats could possibly work together in order to tackle some of the biggest issues facing the Nation.

“In the weeks ahead, I also look forward to sitting down with Governor Romney to talk about where we can work together to move this country forward,” Obama said.

The Associated Press reports that the two have no clear agenda for the meeting but alludes to possible discussion about the looming fiscal cliff and what to do about the soon-expiring tax cuts passed by President George W. Bush. During the campaign season, Obama and Romney contrasted sharply on the issue of the cuts as the President’s Republican challenger disavowed the Administration’s plan to allow the cuts to expire.

The President has in recent weeks embarked on a post-campaign campaign of sorts in an attempt to ease Republican dissent against his tax plan.

“Right now, as we speak, Congress can pass a law that would prevent a tax hike on the first $250,000 of everybody’s income. Everybody’s. And that means that 98 percent of Americans and 97 percent of small businesses wouldn’t see their income taxes go up by a single dime. Ninety-eight percent of Americans, 97 percent of small businesses would not see their income taxes go up by a single dime,” Obama said at the White House Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Congressional Republicans launched a series of attacks against the President for his continued campaigning about taxes even after the election has finished.

“Rather than sitting down with lawmakers of both parties and working out an agreement he is back on the campaign trail presumably with the same old talking points that we are all quite familiar with,” Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) said on the Senate floor last week, alluding to Obama plans to talk about taxes with business owners throughout the Nation. “We already know the president is a very good campaigner. We congratulate him on his re-election. What we don’t know is whether he has the leadership qualities necessary to lead his party to a bipartisan agreement on big issues like we currently face.”

With the exception of letting the SS deduction go back to its old % and reducing the tax on corporations taxes should be left alone. They should be neither increased or reduced.

    • Robert Smith

And we will continue to slide into debt until the debt service eats all of our taxes sending our money to other countries and the 1%.

      • Buster the Anatolian

You could tax the “1%” at 99.99999% of their income and total wealth anf the debt would go down so little nobody would notice. The answer is DRASTIC cuts in federal spending.

    • eddie47d

Obama made a campaign promise to meet with Romney and that is being done. He also said those making above $250,000 should pay more because they receive so much more from this country. Any new tax would be mostly symbolic since it won’t raise much money. Yet it may or may not cut out the loopholes or at least make up for the “hidden” deductions they receive. Yes $250,000 is still alot of money by average standards (Average is about $52,000) so they are considered wealthy. The Conservatives keep insisting that the wealthy are the job creators and a few have done that but the majority haven’t. its time for them to poop or get off the pot. I do agree with Buster that Corporate taxes on a company should not be raised to increase revenue. Taxes should be raised on CEOs and I would take it even further and knock out their deductions, loopholes and golden parachutes. Its long overdue for the Elites in the boardrooms to pony up instead of just taking and taking! Their blindsided greed propelled us over the fiscal cliff and they need to do their part in rebuilding.

      • Hedgehog

Eddie, your government doesn’t need to raise, lower, or even collect taxes. It’s all a scam. Your government, via the Fed, prints your money ad infinitum and at any warp speed, as they are doing now. What possible need could your government have for taxes when they can print 40 billion dollars a month. If that’s not enough run the machines longer or faster. If necessary build or buy more machines. Keep America green, PRINT MONEY!

      • Nadzieja Batki

Hedgehog, if the 16 trillion plus debt was instantly paid off with just the printing of money how would that be explained to the American people and also to the world?

      • Hedgehog

What’s to explain? The debt was run up in US$. Print up 16 trillion US$. Pay off the debt! Contract made and fulfilled. I know, you’re worried about dealing in good faith, and honor and all that. Sorry, your government does not deal in honor and good faith. History has proven that. You might be worried that for every new dollar printed, all the old dollars are worth a bit less. Be calm, if your government does it fast enough it won’t matter. It’s all only book entries on computers. It’s a game of musical chairs and the loser will be the last person standing. The real question is: why does the government need taxes?

    • Harold Olsen

      Nor would it surprise me.

      • Nadzieja Batki

I will also agree with you that Romney will be offered a post where O can watch him and let Romney destroy himself.

  • lee Longchamp

Romney is a gentleman. He should repeat his campaign plans and try to convince Obama to give up his “tax the rich” kill the economy program.

    • Robert Smith

Ummmmmmm, may I point out that the rich haven’t been taxed very much since the Bush tax cuts and we are sliding into even more trouble because of it.

TRICKLE DOWN VOO-DOO economics don’t work.

The right has had their shot AND FAILED.

Time to get back to something more reasonable and fair.

      • rendarsmith

And what is fair Robert? Taxing everybody more and more while giving hand outs to your voters and campaign donors while enjoying expensive vacations?

      • Pat Henry

“Trickle down” and “Voodoo”…. Olinskiian/Orwellian buzzwords to attack the notion of limitations on gov’t… using them doesn’t change the fact that raising taxes hurts the economy.

You say “fair”.. what exactly is that?? Half of what you earn to the gov’t?? More than half? How much exactly do you think someone should keep of what they earn????? I understand that people may make more than you’d like them to, but if you don’t like it then start your own company and pay yourself differently…

Seriously, I want to know exactly what is fair.. straight-forward, none of the typical “blah blah progressive scale.. first x of y…”.

Personally, I don’t see how anything but a fixed % is “FAIR”… you make more, you pay more total dollars, but nobody pays more per dollar than anyone else… that is -FAIR-… in the real world where math matters…..

      • Opal the Gem

Robert smith thinks he, eddie, flushy, and the other tax more and spent twice as much more should be exempt from any new taxes. Those that should pay more are the ones who can actualy think for themselves and oppose the raising of taxes to pay for ever more federal programs. The only answer is drastic cuts in spending for all non essential departments leading to the total elimination of some.

Come on – if you want to be “fair” then Obama should enact the fair tax on 1-1-2013. Then everyone would pay their “fair share” especially those who earn more would buy more. We could keep our whole paychecks and pay tax on new purchases. Then all the bitching would stop. It would also create millions of jobs because corporation would pay no tax. They would all move back to the USA, create jobs = people employed again = they spend money and what???? pay t a x e s !!!!! Revenue for our wonderful government would go UP, unemployment and welfare would go DOWN – problem fixed. It’s so simple – but they wont’ listen. Call your representatives and demand the FAIR TAX

      • eddie47d

Then how does Opal explain Romney’s wish of an additional 2 trillion for defense? Short term memory Oppie?

      • Opal the Gem

eddie you poor obtuse witless fellow. I never said i supported any increases in spending anywhere in the budget. I clearly said CUTS in non essentiol departments were in order including the elimination of some departments.

    • eddie47d

What said it all is that the “Republicans are launching a series of attacks”. Nothing new there in this continual sabotage. Obama is reaching across the aisle and the Republicans are the ones provoking and pretending it is still election time.

      • phideaux

Obm is NOT reaching accross the aisle. If he were he would be making headlines nationwide about how he is willing to make drastic cuts in spending for modest increases in taxes.

  • http://att.ent PAUL Schwab

It is the left who have had their shot and THEY HAVE FAILED. How else would we have gotten to where we are? Four years of spending had a lot to do with our current situation.
You cannot continue catering to those who do not want to work. The left has been building up the voters, who are takers. What happened to the makers?

    • eddie47d

The “makers” are too busy buying their next summer home and sending their money to their Swiss accounts to care about the future of America. Their loyalty is to themselves and not job creation. The “takers” would love to have one of those jobs that the “makers” are not …well…making! Apparently you were asleep when the “makers” were building up their nest egg while the “takers” (Middle Class) were TAKEN.

  • mark

Yeah this criticism from Mitch McConnel,l of all people, who after the 2008 election famously said: “The single most important thing we want to achieve is for President Obama to be a one-term president,” So much for McConnnell’s credibility. What a complete joke he and most of his party are.

If I were Romney I’d tell Obama to go jump in the lake. Why should he go to the White House and let Obama get the credit for all his ideas when he was running his campaign. Obama is the president now he needs to lead. Go get his own plan to save America!

    • mark

Romney, as the loser in the election, is fortunate that the president is extending this personal courtesy to him. It is typical of what a class and a Chrisitan guy, Obama is. Ironically President Obama is much kinder to Romney than his fellow Republicans, who have all been castigatiing and condemning him from the minute he lost the election. Prior to that, of course, Romney was a patriot and a hero to all right-wing talk show hosts and cable TV pundits. What a collection of hypocrites they turned out to be.

  • cawmun cents

Hate to be the harbinger of bad news but there is only one party….the Democratic Socialists…and they are going to run your nation now….everything else you know or think you know is a sham.
You wanted to go with a middle of the road guy…mistake.I called it from the beginning.
You thought that there were enough smart folks left in this nation to stem the DS take over, and you were all wrong.
Democratic Socialism has swept the globe, and you are falling victim to its insidiousness.
You wont believe me,and you wont wake up in time to see it coming.
You like being victimized America, face it,you are a drama queen.
Reality TV,and long years of gameshow mentality have softened your brain, and you arent about to wake up from your dream.
Soon the long nightmare of quiet acceptance will creep in.
But you doze away, blissfully unaware of the horrors to come. You argue over the small potatos and the roast is getting carved right in front of your eyes.Have fun eating your psychotic supper,a fitting last meal.

    • Steve E

This short video sums it all up of what America has become.

      • cawmun cents

He didnt mention the snakeoil salesmen, nor the media/academia…..which I have been decrying for years….its like nobody sees the real issue.
you took the main ingredient out and expect to keep the recipe intact…..low fat,low sugar, low integrity, low character, low esteem,Light as the beer you like to drink to keep your bodies in slave shape.Formless,colorless,tasteless,non-effective,non-inclusive,non-substantive,non-gratifying,regular old dime store socialism.
Live it,love it,or leave it,but for darn sakes dont fight it.

  • http://google Nelda Pilgrim

Romney should NOT discuss ANYTHING with BO. Now that he (BO) has got the office (by fraud) he built it and let him deal with it alone.

  • Hedgehog

C’mon people, I know I’m just a foreign troll, but I really would like an answer to the question,(Why does your government need taxes?), given that they can print an infinite amount of money. Smoke and mirrors, partially, but there has to be more. To buy more slaves (voters), yes, but slaves are cheap, your last election proved that. I think part of my dilemma lies in the fact that I’m a Canadian. Canadian currency is backed by commodities, mostly petroleum. What is the US$ backed by, politician’s promises? Your government has all the money it can print. Why does it need to impoverish its citizens with taxes?

    • Bob Livingston

      Dear Hedgehog,

You write: “C’mon people, I know I’m just a foreign troll, but I really would like an answer to the question,(Why does your government need taxes?), given that they can print an infinite amount of money.” Ah, the big question. Thank you Hedgehog. I have written about this many times but only a few have been able to grasp it. (I write more about it on Monday.)

You write: “Canadian currency is backed by commodities, mostly petroleum.” Which makes it a safe for Americans looking to get some money outside the U.S. dollar. I have written this before.

You write: “Your government has all the money it can print. Why does it need to impoverish its citizens with taxes?” Taxes are a tool for wealth redistribution and information gathering on U.S. citizens.

      Best wishes,

      • Hedgehog

Thanks Bob! I’ll be right here on Monday.

So the RINO caves to the photo-op… he is as disgusting as Christie. Do any of them really think Obama gives a rip about anything other than himself?

  • Don

Mr. Romney, as much as he cares for our country, should not give Obama any advise on how to run the country, let him hang himself.

  • Eleanor

Republicans need to get Grover Norquist off their back. What silly little boys to be so afraid of one man. Tear up that piece of paper you signed & really start working for the American people.

    • Buster the Anatolian

Anyone truely interested in working for the American people will insist that for every 1% anticipated increase in tax revenue there must be a 5% reduction in the federal government spending.

  • Ernie

[Howdy, Sam. Just sharing an interesting and intriguing bit I found on the web.]

Obama Enslaves & Destroys Inner Cities

( I experienced all this while trapped in a large American city.)

The suburbs are booming, but not fast enough. Yessir, you ghetto folks
in inner cities have started a good thing, but there are still lots of acres
outside the cities without any houses on them. So you’ve gotta move into
“untouched” city blocks and do the following:
Throw trash everywhere. You’ll insure that your friends who pick up trash
and distribute free rat poison packets will keep their jobs. And folks can
predict the weather by the direction the trash is blowing!
Walk down the street. Better yet, rhythm down it. And when I say street
I don’t mean sidewalk. Save sidewalks for your friends on cycles. Besides,
it’s hard to fit many cursing, screaming, drinking, pot-smoking kids on a
sidewalk, and it’s also hard to spot keys and other things left in cars when
    you’re walking on a sidewalk!
When walking down a street, turn your head when you hear a car coming
and stare at the driver. For all you know, it might be one of your enemies
out to get you. On the other hand, it might be only your neighbor and all
that hateful staring might make him want to move out.
Be sure to beget lots of unloved, unsupervised, unwashed two-legged
“Obama welfare meal tickets” – either through wedlock or (preferably) out of
wedlock. And let them often ring doorbells, begging for money.
Turn quiet streets into noisy jungles. Have a blast – a
long blast with your car horn under your neighbor’s window at
3:00 a.m. Let folks know who the real honkies are! Blow your horn when (1)
you see the police coming (2) you want to buy some dope (3) you want to sell
some dope (4) for any other reason. Play your stereo so loudly that folks can’t
hear sirens going to the latest holdup or arson. Be noisy, man, noisy!
Be cruel to animals, especially “man’s best friend.” Tie your dog on a
short chain under a blazing sun with no water or food or love or license or
dog shots. Make him as mean as you are. Better yet, let your dog run loose.
Neighbors love to find freshly killed cats (after hearing their screams) and
other goodies on their lawns. Pit one dog against another in bloody “canine
cockfights” while friends lounge on car hoods and cheer and make bets! And
what madness is it where folks move out and abandon pets in the house,
leaving them nothing to eat but their own droppings? This happens often in the
ghetto, and almost no one will help the animals.
Keep a good supply of Saturday Night Specials – also Sunday, Monday,
Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday Night Specials. Your criminal
presence will improve your neighbor’s light bill; when he isn’t watching you
at night (with his lights off), he will be able to read books at night by
the light of the police helicopter searchlights!
Here’s more insanity: Uncle Sam spends millions of our tax money to
move you into our neighborhoods where we lose much when we sell our homes.
So you have your nerve when you glare and swear at us when we don’t move
out quickly; but you’re the reason we can’t find good buyers! I really wonder
what you and Uncle Sam will do when lots of folks move to the wilderness and
live off the land and consequently don’t have to pay taxes to support such
Finally, spread the rumor that all of your troubles are associated with
skin, even though you and I know that your problem isn’t skin. It’s sin!!!
What makes a ghetto? It’s not the paint on a house (or lack of it) but all
of you two-legged pains in the neck!

    Can’t Cover Up.”
