Obama Administration Supports Bill To Repeal DOMA

July 22, 2011 by

The Obama Administration is reportedly supporting a repeal of DOMA.President Barack Obama’s Administration recently indicated that it would support efforts in Congress to repeal the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), which defines marriage as between a man and a woman.

Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) and Representative Jerrold Nadler (D-N.Y.) introduced the Respect for Marriage Act, which White House spokesman Jay Carney said would be supported by the Administration, reports The Washington Post.

Earlier this year, United States Attorney General Eric Holder was instructed by the Administration to stop defending DOMA in court.

The Alliance Defense Fund will reportedly testify before the Senate in defense of DOMA. Daniel Blomberg, a lawyer for the organization, said that the Administration’s decision to support Feinstein’s bill was hypocritical.

“Our perspective is that it’s not only incorrect, but deeply disappointing, to have a politician claim support for marriage between one man and one woman on the campaign trail, then actively undermine that once in office,” he told the newspaper. “We are confident Congress will make the right decision here.”

The Washington Times reports that six States — with the most recent being New York — and Washington, D.C., have legalized same-sex marriages.
