Oakland Property Owner ‘Racks’ Shotgun, Deters Occupy Vandals

An Oakland, Calif., developer, fed up with the antics of Occupy protesters trying to break into the building where his office is located during riotous moments late last Wednesday, walked outside with a loaded shotgun to discourage the vandals.

Phil Tagami, who recently oversaw a $50 million renovation project on the office building, said he is tired of watching the so-called peaceful protesters destroy property and the town’s image and was unwilling to allow them to break into his building, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

“I was standing there and they saw me there, and I lifted it — I didn’t point it — I just held it in my hands,” Tagami said. “And I just racked it, and they ran.”

The protesters did several thousand dollars in damage throughout the city when things turned violent last week, according to officials. The Occupy movement contends that the violent protesters are “on the fringe” of the 99 percent, and do not represent the group. Tagami disagrees.

“We’re very concerned that a group of people can be allowed to do this type of destruction to our town and to our image without any repercussions,” he said. “They need to be held accountable.”

Armed citizens willing to protect their property may be what keeps violent, destructive riots like what transpired in England earlier this year from occurring in the United States. When social unrest erupted in England, panicked citizens purchased baseball bats and clubs by the thousands because strict gun laws make it difficult for them to own firearms.
