Nutrient-Dense Food: Your Secret Arsenal for Food Storage Success

In any survival scenario, the most valuable asset or currency you will need is food. Food reserves will be more precious than gold, oil and cash. We must have food to survive. Let’s face it, when you’re hungry, nothing else matters. If you don’t have nutrient-dense food, your food reserves will be insufficient.

Nutrient-dense food is your secret weapon. It is the single most important factor to catapult you from “someone who just has food storage” to someone who has a nutrient-dense food reserves.

It’s not enough to just have “food.” You should have food that has the highest nutritional density for the space that it will take up. This will ensure your family’s health will not be compromised in stressful times.

Pound For Pound And Dollar For Dollar

Money is getting tight for most people. We must be wise with each dollar we have.

The food-reserve decisions you make now will determine your wealth when food prices double and triple. Determining how much money you put into food reserves is like buying stocks. When it comes time to invest in your food reserve bank, there is one key investing tip that you must know.

One “dollar” doesn’t equal $1, and one can of “food” doesn’t equal one can of food.

A dollar spent today on dried fruits and vegetables is a stronger dollar than a dollar spent on a box of cereal. One jar of fruit whose juice you could also drink at another meal or add to pancake batter is not the same as one jar of food that is not as versatile and is limited in its recipe appeal. I believe that pre-made meals that you just add water to and cook are a great investment. You don’t have to open six to 10 cans and find a recipe to make a meal. When you need food reserves, you need them now and you need them convenient and easy to prepare with the minimal amount of heat and fuel. Each food-reserve choice must give you optimal return on investment, pound for pound and dollar for dollar.

Quantity Doesn’t Equal Quality

You may have a large food reserve, but is it quality food? In times of stress, you need the highest quality food available. To optimize storage space, each inch must yield the highest quality of food to justify occupying the space where it is stored. When it comes time to pack your 72-hour emergency bug out bag, every square inch counts. Lightweight, nutrient-dense food could save your life.

A “cheap” bag of processed food will not give you the nutrition needed. You need high-quality food in any stressful situation. In a worst-case scenario, there could be viruses in the air, irritants in your throat, bacteria to combat and gastrointestinal tracts that are not properly digesting food. If we eat nutrient-dense food, we will better combat illnesses caused by a pandemic flu or some other disaster.

I would rather have oatmeal or nine-grain cereal of the highest quality with a few dried apple slices than boxes of processed, poor-quality, sugary cereal. Why? Because each bite you put into your mouth will cost you — not financially, but you will pay with your health.

Digestive Enzyme Optimization

If your food is not living (whole foods), your body will need to produce enzymes and digestive juices to break the food down and make it bioavailable. Dehydrated fruits and vegetables are the highest quality because the water has been removed, and the enzymes are still in the food. Any grain, bean or legume that will sprout is a nutrient-dense food.

It takes more energy and digestive enzymes to digest processed, packaged food than high-quality, dried whole foods.

Food That Ignores Constitutional Law

All food reserves are not created equal. One can of dried food has greater nutritional value than other cans of wet pack food from a grocery store. Homegrown food that you dehydrate at home in your food dryer is better-quality food, because you can regulate what goes into putting up the food and the temperature at which it is dehydrated. Get fruits and vegetables from your local grocery store, farmers market or your garden. Even winter vegetables such as potatoes, carrots and onions can be sliced thin, dried and stored, then reconstituted in soups.

Imported food from countries with less-stringent inspection for insecticides, fertilizers, bacterial and chemical contamination have entered our country’s food supply and have proven to be problematic. Storing safe, clean food is essential.

When storing dehydrated food, it is best to look for the healthiest dried foods available. You want to get the most for your money. Read the labels on the containers. You should purchase foods that do not contain genetically modified organisms (GMOs), Monosodium Glutamate (MSG), Hydrogenated Oils or Trans Fat. Organic food is usually more nutritious than other foods.

    Sprouting is a great source of nutrition, a large supply or seeds will yield (adding water) several times the weight in sprouts. The ability to create your food is also key. Raising critters (chickens, rabbits, …) and an indoor growing system like Aquaponics- growing food indoors in a hydroponics system mated with a fish tank. Big in Australia, catching on here.

    Yes, generally correct.

    Stress that the type foods being stored could very logically be part of a person’s every-day diet because such foods will provide cost effective menus. For example, beans and rice together add good protein to one’s intake.

    Also, the comment above about sprouting is very wise. Sprouted foods added to daily meals provide a bit more nutrition. Of course, that suggests that storing water is also a good idea.

    I strongly suggest all preparations for the hard times to come include plans to survive without electricity for up to at least a few months. This year I installed a wood burner in my house for heat as well as to cook on in winter months. Constructed a heavy duty grill of sorts in my back yard for cooking in the summer months. And yes, above all several months worth of stored high quality foods. A plan for water source and water purification. Peggy also has a good book on root cellars, a great way to grow and store your own fresh vegetables.

    It is very important to avoid GMO foods, not easy to do in a country that doesn’t require foods to be labeled. I inquired from one company if the corn was natural or genetically modified but received no answer from them so the answer was self-evident. Even infertility has increased some 11% in humans since GMO food was snuck into the American food supply, and even more among farm aninals. If the food doesn’t say “contains no GMO” you can be assured it is almost a given that it does contain what some call “Franken-foods”. Do your best to store organic or at least non-GMO foods. Fortunately not all foods are GMO but even alfalfa is now being allowed to be altered by the mad scientists at the FDA and those who apparently run the FDA, those at Monsanto. Hundreds of scientists warned us not to allow genetically modified alfalfa onto American farms but it was done anyway. I have heard that the royalty in England have their own gardens and will not eat GMO foods. Some of America’s wealthiest won’t eat it either, but of course it’s good enough for the masses who won’t be able to get adequate health care if the Supreme Court doesn’t reject the Socialist health care program that is already being implemented. When you see the statistics on health in Canada and England you quickly realize how much better off 85% of the population have it here. Here’s one congressman who gets it:

    Be aware of the top ten most polluted foods in the USA, apples being the most polluted. I have peeled them for more than 30 years. I won’t eat strawberries anymore unless they are organic. All berries are very healthy but the chemicals allowed on strawberries are deadly but you won’t notice right away anymore than you would if your food contained a small amount of arsenic! From 5th in the world a generation ago we are now worse than 40th in longevity. What we eat is the primary reason although there are others. Avoid products that contain MSG but soy protein as well as soy is now 93% unnatural in this country, and corn is 86% GMO and on and on. Avoid table salt (use sea salt, preferably mined sea salt from ancient sea beds), avoid HFCS (again besides being unhealthy it is made from GMO Corn). A few prepared meals are a convenience but try to avoid those with Sodium Aluminum Phosphate as aluminum is something that has been observed in the brains of Alzheimer’s Disease. An occasional peeled apple won’t hurt you even if it’s not organic and an occasional meal of GMO foods may not be harm us but the damage from them seems to be accumulative.

    Has anyone noticed that the AMISH who don’t eat GMO foods (unless they eat out) have almost no AUTISM? They don’t even use chemical fertilizers or pesticides. We are told this is just a coincidence. We need to prepare for the coming hard times but do your best to store quality foods or at least as natural as possible. Various seeds that you can sprout are a definite plus as they are living foods containing enzymes but even I need to learn how to use them. Do not live in fear but prepare. I do not know how much time we have but pray about everything as to many people who believe in Jesus, from all different faiths, have been warned about what is coming. In Argentina when the collapse came over a decade ago, citizens were not allowed to take more than $250 a week out of their banks. What will happen here remains to be seen. Continue to ignore all this at your own risk! Pray about everything. May God bless all who read this.

      Ok Firefly, I can see your one of the greenies with your “Organic” thing, but the truth is, the so called “Organic” foods do not produce the quality, nor the quantity as your regular grown foods do. The way you talked about the strawberries, it became aparent that you may not wash the fruits that you get from the store. As far as the qulity of fruits and veggies, organic versus non-organic, the quality, size, and price of your “Organics” is less than the non organics. Not much difference in the taste but that is about all. What really gets me is that the term Organic is an oxymoron. All foods produced from plants are organic, nothing more and nothing less. I’ve seen some foods marked as organic which makes me laugh, and the producers are just using it as an advertising gimick. The only thing that genically modified food does, is produce more and in the long run reduce the price of said foods, otherwise there is noting wrong with them, and your comment about the reproduction process of humans is way off the mark. Just remember to wash all veggies and fruit you pruchase from the store and you won’t have any problems. As far as you idea about apples, well, there are so many different types of them and they are grown all over the nation so I seriously doubt that there is much to your aversion to apples except that you may be one of those who just doesn’t like them. Like a cousin of mine that used to hate fish. She had never tried it but stated that she couldn’t stand the taste of fish. We finally got her to try some pan fried trout, and after that she realized how great it was. No firefly, there is nothing wrong with regularly grown foods so don’t put them down, and by the way, I’ve been eating apples for almost 70 years and they haven’t harmed me at all. Also strawberries, blueberries (yuuummmm), blackberries, cherries, and it looks to me as if I’m still here.

        Sadly short sighted. If you’re not concerned about the health impacts of consuming GMOs, I would hope you’d consider what GMO farming does to soil and drinking water i.e. ruins it. Organic is a slight misnomer, but only because “natural” was already corrupted. Surely you can’t argue that more chemicals, especially petro-chemicals, are better, or even good, for growing food? Or that unproven genetic engineering should be sent out into the wild where it can never be put back in Pandora’s box?

        On a more general note, kind of disingenuous for the author to tout a certain brand’s dehydrated food without mentioning the kickback she gets.

    It really amazes me how this leap of un-logic seems to trip so easily off their tongue.

    Without some amount of socialized medicine, many people will not be able to get ANY healthcare, let alone ADEQUATE healthcare. They already turn you away if you don’t have insurance of some sort. I know personally. I haven’t been to a doctor in years. I can’t afford one.

    Some of you people forget what it is like to be poor. To decide between insulin for your diabetes, or paying for gas to get you back and forth to work, or your electricity.

    This life is hard enough without some idiot taking their passion and care for their fellow man and putting it behind a hateful cause for the best of reasons.

    So you people enjoy your dehydrated super-food. We’ll have the GMO hamburger and fries because its all we can afford.

    There’s a spot just above qualifying for the foodstamp line, and just below actually making a living wage. Some people tread water in that spot for years. Some people drown.

    Perhaps you’ll outlive me. You probably will, but those years are the drooling, senile, burdensome years… The years when the only people who can put up with your old know-it-all attitude and changing your adult diapers are the people who get paid to do so.

    This country falling apart, but mostly because all of the idiots are being turned against their own best interest, and they’re too hot-headed and fired up against the “libral media” to see what they are doing to all of us.
