No Change For Parking? No Problem

DORTMUND, Germany, Aug. 2 (UPI) — The frustration of finally finding a parking lot only to find you have no cash for the meter or machine may be a thing of the past, German researchers say.

Scientists at the Fraunhofer Institute in Dortmund have developed a small radio-frequency identification chip that can be adhered to the inside of a car’s windshield that will communicate with a device at a parking lot’s entrance and exit, allowing you drive through while your fee is paid by direct debit from your online account.

“Waiting at the parking machine, searching for change, losing your ticket — all that is a thing of the past,” Fraunhofer researcher Arnd Ciprina said. “The car driver saves time and enjoys a more convenient service.”

The microchip does not need a battery, drawing its energy from the electromagnetic field of the reader device, while the two can communicate at distance of up to 25 feet, a Fraunhofer release said.

Each chip has a unique, 12-digit code, enabling each car to be identified when passing through the entrance and exit.

“No personal data is stored on the chip,” Ciprina said. “The 12-digit code is encrypted so that third parties cannot connect the identification number with a user.”

And don’t bother trying to steal a chip, he said; if the foil transponder chip is removed from the windshield it self-destructs.
