NIH Spends $500 Million Because It Wasn’t Diverse Enough

The National Institutes of Health produced a study last year proclaiming disparity between the number of black researchers who were awarded grants from the institute and the number of white and Hispanic applicants who won grants. Government responded, allocating $500 million in funding to help more black biomedical researchers get NIH grants.

The NIH said it recognized through its study that black applicants were 10 percent less likely to receive its grants than whites or Hispanics, saying “the quality of educational and mentoring experiences may differ for applicants who self-identify as black or African-American.” Furthermore, the NIH said that there were an alarmingly low number of non-white research applicants in general.

To make sure that the agency hands out more grants to minorities, NIH officials have implemented a sort of in-house affirmative action plan. They created a 10-year plan that will dedicate $50 million annually to support hundreds of minority students with scholarships, research experiences and even graduate loan repayment. The agency has also promised to make diversity a core consideration of NIH governance” and ensure fairness in the peer review system that erases “unconscious bias related to disparities in research awards.”

In 2009, the same agency commissioned a study, costing taxpayers nearly half a million dollars, to better understand why men don’t like to wear condoms during sexual intercourse.

    BECAUSE NEGRO PARENTS VIEW GOING TO COLLEGE AS A GUARANTEED CIVIL-RIGHT – AND, NOT A PRIVILEGE – NO ONE IS WILLING TO PROVIDE ACCURATE SKILL/TALENT ASSESSMENTS. THIS IS HIGHLY PROBABLE BACKGROUND INFORMATION IN REFERENCE TO WHY NEGROES CAN NOT OBTAIN National Institutes of Health Grants.

    In a truely “color blind” society, the grants would go to the most qualified recipients, what ever race they may be.
    Qualifications would be the deciding factor.

      We may be at or near a point where this favoritism is not necessary, if it ever was. I ran an association that awarded scholarships. Applications were designed to prevent assessors from discerning the race of the applicants. Guess what? Blacks were successful in about 5
      to 15% of the apps. Prior to that, OSHA unexpectedly visited a police department where I coordinated the academy and demanded to examine our roster. OSHA required 10% black participation. Guess what? Out of 20 cadets, 2 were black. Blacks leaders who promote “affirmative action” are clearly hurting those they profess to be helping.

    I recently read an article about the top ten American colleges with the lowest graduation rates. Alongside these low graduation rates, were listed the percentage of students attending this colleges on Pell Grants. For those of you who arent familiar with these, Pell Grants for for low income families, and they dont have to be paid back. Of these top ten, the graduations rates went from 9.7% for the lowest, up to a whopping 16 percent for the highest. And the students there on Pell grants were anywhere from 35% up to 74% at the one with the lowest graduation rates. Just another example of government waste, giving to those who cry foul the loudest. And it will continue, all in the name of making things equal, by giving one more than the other.

    If it ensured fairness then it would award grants only on the basis of qualifications, and not by skin color.

      I don’t know how she can accept to a medical school when she can’t simply spell. Affirmative action often helps people with low knowledge, while smart people can’t have that.

    The fact that the black is only 12% of the population should make the point. Why would you think that the 12% should recieve more than 50% of the grant money? And as pointed out , they just arent capable of , or deserving enough to make it on thier own. You had better be prepared for more of this black priority , One more term of Kenia the white will have no recognition at all…

      With employment growth, less represented groups (women and Blacks) gain greater representation in high-skilled positions while White men gain greater representation in low-skilled positions.

      I don’t think the U.S will have good future. Everything is changing and acting as the banana republic. Of course, the number of immigrants from third world is increased. Therefore, some parts of the U.S is resemble to the third world.

    While I am thoroughly disgusted with so much of the racila bigotry being shown in these posts I am hoping there will be someone reading today capable of engaging in constructive commentary. There is a good point in mentioning that blacks make up only 12% of our population. So why should the black community expect to get more than 12% of the grants? NIH is simply following through with the reward system that has been put in place by this administration. My company personally has been the victim of such a shift. In the real estate business there were several Asset Management comanies helping Fannie Mae dispose of properties. Two years ago all of these companies were fired and a brand new third party vendor was given ALL Fannie Mae contracts to dole out. They were a small minority owned company completely incapable of handling such a large volume of transactions or managing the flow of business. They were so bad at what they were doing FNMA took all of their sales in house.
    The diversity surveys for those who do work for government agencies are a hoot as well. They ask if we are minority owened, women owned, gay or lesbian owned. If not, you are not diverse. Later on down the survey they ask about being Veteran owned but it seems to be secondary. I suppose the newest question to be put out there will most likely be are you Union owned or run by a union.
    Obviously there is absolutely no intention of producing equal rights for everyone in the country. So many groups can’t figure out that equal rights do not mean special rights and priveledges over those who do not fit into your group. I guess it beats truly working to excel at something and achieving the best.

        As far as some the racially charged comments, I think you seeing some frustration from folks who are told; “You’re too white, don’t bother me!!!”

        Myself, I’ve been w/o a job since 2010 and still looking (although the Feds do count me as employed since I’m not drawing unemployment benefits). My biggest hangup is my age (58 years old). I qualify for alot of high tech jobs but once people interview me (hundreds of interviews) they see that I am white and “old”.

        Mind you, I’m not crying but it is what it is.

    Quality and performance should be the only criteria. We have been word-conditoned to think that, somehow, if a world where non-Dravidian Caucasians are about 5% of the global population, EuroAmericans are some sort of inherently oppressive “majority” and everyone else is victim.
    In fact, it was the same sense of fair play, of making up for past wrongs, a deep sense of morality and decency which even predated the Christian conversion of Europe and can be found in ancient Sagas, which underlies the “Affirmative Action” initiative. Unfortunately, in something like research, trying to promote or award to persons who submitted inferior proposals or did not do the highest standard of science, when the procedure was not weighted by race in the first place (look at patents, Nobel awards, etc.- science is a color-blind enterprise to begin with!) simply defeats the original goal of NIH of advancing medical technology and discovering new cures for diseases.
    It is not “racist” to suggest that some of the obstacles to greater Black acheivement might lie in Black culture itself. Raising children is difficult enough with two parents, but in a subculture where male sexual priviledge is the defining force and 88% of first births are to an unwed mother, the child simply lacks that vital resource in growing up- Dad. That is not anyone else’s fault, nor a vestige of “opression” nor “racism” as witnessed by the fact that OTHER majorities, such as Latinos and Asians seem to find NO such obstacles to scientific acheivement. Look at the number of Indian or Chinese physicians, or the number of science-driven companies such Other majorities run! The key here is that they both have a culture of hard work, scholastic acheivement, and a strong family unit with a father present. This is what none of the other posts have discussed.
    Let’s return to merit-only basis for scientific awards.

    This is another case of (you can not fix stupid) feild. Wheather you just pass the through (college or any type of school) strictly by your color. In the medical feild, even if you were dumber than dirt and couldn’t speak any better than a 2 year old, if you were black and showed up at the door you got in. Go to any medical department and see what group by race has the most deaths and screw ups. I know I almost had a leg removed by a total black surgical team, because I heard them talking about my surgrey , which was to remove bone fragments not remove my leg. II have had Ethopian doctors who spoke like the British and did great work Of course look at the marxist moron in the WH who never has done a damn thing but live off of tax payers and deal drugs. Look at our prison population at what color is prevalant, stealing from everyone else and doing any thing abhorant to society, is the norm. It used to be brush mindset, now it is I just a gangsta dumb azz who is picked on!

    All racism aside, and dealing with just facts, I find it shameful that a race of people, chastise and make fun of, exclude and ridicule their own race, if they excel in school and get good grades, and are told they are a sell out to their own race. Yes, I have had children of color in our public school systems tell me this. When I ask them why they are running with these hood gang dudes, they tell me they are tired of getting their butts whipped on the way from school, and that they have to purposely lower their grades or the butt whipping continue, because they are not considered black enough by their peers, if they are getting A’s in school and they speak clearly. They are accused of acting white. So its bad to be white, but thats not racist? You have all kinds of scholarships and alliances and black this and black that, that totally excludes whites, asians, hispanics, slavics, poles, arabs, every race in the word but blacks. But in todays society, thats not racist? Gee, I thought that is exactly what Martin Luther King was against, judging a man by the color of his skin, not the content of his character. And I know many a black man who are very disturbed by this, but do to the fact that racists like Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson, who make their living on promotion racial issues and keeping them alive, and having self promoted themselves to being the so called “black leaders”, they make it hard on the black man who is rising above bad circumstances, getting eduated, becoming successful, only to have his own race label him as a sell out. What a shame, and I feel so sorry for these guys trying to suceed, that over 80 percent of their own kind smack them down for suceeding. Its really a sad commentary on things.

    I was a “Lab Rat” for the NIH,… my qualification is I have Parkinson’s Disease.
    I do NOT care who is doing research, IF a cure comes from a black, white, purple, or a little green man from mars, just as long as it is a cure!
