Nation Marks 40th Anniversary Of Roe

WASHINGTON, (UPI) –  The nation marks the 40th anniversary Tuesday of the landmark U.S. Supreme Court ruling, Roe vs. Wade, which recognized a woman’s right to an abortion.

The decision in a case out of Texas still evokes strong emotions from opponents and supporters. The annual March for Life, in which tens of thousands of abortion opponents march from the National Mall to the Supreme Court, is scheduled for Friday.

Written by the late Justice Harry Blackmun and handed down on Jan. 22, 1973, the 7-2 opinion in Roe said in part, “State criminal abortion laws, like those involved here, that except from criminality only a life-saving procedure on the mother’s behalf without regard to the stage of her pregnancy and other interests involved violate the due process clause of the 14th Amendment, which protects against state action the right to privacy, including a woman’s qualified right to terminate her pregnancy.”

Blackmun conceded a state “has legitimate interests in protecting both the pregnant woman’s health and the potentiality of human life, each of which interests grows and reaches a  ‘compelling’ point at various stages of the woman’s approach to term.” But an abortion, until the onset of a third trimester, “must be left to the medical judgment of the pregnant woman’s attending physician.”

Some, but not all, of the sweep of Roe has been chipped away in subsequent Supreme Court decisions.

On their website, the organizers of the March for Life told protesters they should rally “on the National Mall between 7th & 9th streets, the same place as last year.” Marchers are then scheduled to walk up Constitution Avenue, then to the Supreme Court on Capitol Hill.

Tens of thousands of protesters have attended the rally and march each year.

In support, National Organization for Women President Terry O’Neill plans to lead a candlelight vigil Tuesday to commemorate the 40th anniversary of Roe.

The real “war on women” in this country is being waged by the abortion industry:

Public support for legalized abortion is at an all-time high, despite a move by a growing number of states to put more restrictions on it.

Tuesday marks the 40th anniversary of Roe v. Wade and the first time that a majority of Americans, seven out of 10, oppose overturning the landmark Supreme Court decision, according to a new NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll.

The poll of 1,000 adults conducted last week also found 54 percent think abortion should be legal. At the same time, however, more states have acted to make it more difficult for a woman to end a pregnancy.

One thing pro-abortionists, the so-called pro-choice POS’s, will not tell you is that in the 80′s the woman who was Jane Roe, came out in favor of overturning Roe V. Wade. She regretted getting an abortion and said it was the biggest mistake of her life. Also, I’ve read where women who have gotten abortions make up one of the highest group of people who commit suicide. Plus, the pro-abortionists think that if a woman chooses to have her baby rather than aborting, she is making the wrong choice. Pro-choice? I don’t think so. On Catholic Online’s website a week or two back, they had a story of a woman who went to Planned Parenthood when she became pregnant. They told her she should abort her child because she had a heart condition and giving birth could be fatal to her. She was also told the child would be born severely handicapped. Well, she questioned what PP had told her and decided to see what she termed a real doctor. This doctor told her she had no heart condition and there was no indication her child would be handicapped in any way. She gave birth with no problems to herself and her child was perfectly healthy.
