Nation “lacks food protection plan”

December 3, 2008 by

Group urges overhaul of embattled food agencyFood protection systems in the United States are in need of "a major overhaul" having avoided serious restructuring for more than 100 years.

That’s the claim of the Trust for America’s Health (TFAH), which is calling for root-and-branch reform of the Food and Drug Administration.

And according to TFAH executive director Jeff Levi, any such overhaul must be matched by major investment to drive the required change.

"The FDA should articulate to Congress and the American people what resources are needed over the long-term to achieve the goals and define milestones for how to measure success," he remarked.

The call for the FDA to be given greater weight comes at a turbulent time for the agency as it seeks to brush off criticism of its handling of the recent melamine scare relating to milk-based products from China.

According to the TFAH, nearly one in four Americans get sick each year as a result of food-borne illness. This is at an estimated cost to the economy of $44 billion.

Yesterday the FDA published an update on its food protection program, which was officially launched a year ago and is designed to improve food safety in domestic and imported produce.

Much is expected from those who wield great power [paraphrased]. Either our ‘food leadership’ is incompetent by choice, or America suffers from a terrible case of low standards. Neither possibility can keep America healthy. US food producers use misinformation to keep us uninformed. Our elected quislings prefer a money-motivated
trance to upholding their oaths of office. If Washington cared about us, America would be a healthy nation. In Washington, responsibility is merely a word. Money trumps ethics. Does anyone not understand how this man-made monster was created and is protected by our non-leaders?

obama and envionmists are so busy putting new programs into practice that they do not think them thru…they want corn for fuel but did not think it thru – WE ARE NOT GOING TO HAVE ENOUGH WATER BECAUSE OF THE WATER IT TAKES TO GR0W THAT EXTRA CORN! where do these people come from?

than those nuts in northern california are so worried about a little delta minnow that there are willing to let Americans starve! 75% of our produce came from California and those people have now dried up the farmlands in Central California…what is the matter with these people…obviously they did not think it thru and obviously they have not ready the Trends Research Reports!

What do you mean by ‘Dried up the farmlands in Central California’
They are not dried up. All the farms I can see in Central California are healthy and growing crops.

Ok, I read the article regarding water rationing in the southern half of the Central Valley. It has not started yet to affect the fields.
It makes no sense to make such a ruling. They should be able to appeal it to a higher Court.
