NEW YORK, Aug. 24 (UPI) — A naked man who police said displayed signs of mental illness stabbed four residents, one of them fatally, in his New York apartment building.
Christian Falero, 23, apparently chose his victims at random, stabbing them when they answered a knock at the door, The New York Times reported.
Police spokesman Paul J. Browne said Falero “just appeared to be psychotic” and authorities knew of no motive for the Tuesday afternoon incident.
After the attacks, Falero fled the seven-story building and residents said they saw him running down the street yelling that it was the end of the world.
He was apprehended by police and taken to a hospital for psychiatric evaluation. Charges against him were pending.
The resident who died was identified as Ignacio Reyes-Collazo, 81. His wife was stabbed multiple times but was hospitalized in stable condition, the New York Post reported.
Two other female residents were stabbed, one of them critically, and a home health aide in the building lobby was kicked in the stomach.
