The National Institutes of Health (NIH) reports that approximately 1 million Americans have a heart attack each year. But researchers in Sweden have discovered that women without cardiovascular disease can reduce their heart attack risk by taking multivitamins, according to Reuters.
The scientists studied 31,671 women who had no history of heart disease, along with 2,262 of those who did suffer from this problem for approximately 10 years. Nearly 60 percent of the women in both groups were also using various forms of dietary supplements.
Investigators observed that 3.4 percent of the subjects that did not take any dietary supplements had heart attacks. Meanwhile, 2.6 percent of those who added multivitamins into their diet had heart attacks, according to the news provider.
As a result, women that were not previously diagnosed with heart disease who took multivitamins for five years reduced their heart attack risk by 18 percent. The same subjects that used vitamins for at least 10 years were able to decrease their risk by 41 percent, the news source reports.
