More On The Health Risks Of Naked Body Scanners

More On The Health Risks Of Naked Body Scanners

The Government’s line that the Transportation and Security Administration’s naked body scanners expose travelers to harmless amounts of radiation is being revealed as a lie as more and more mainstream scientists, researchers and physicians begin to issue reports and opinions based on new research.

We covered some initial reports here. But in April, a group of researchers from the University of California, San Francisco wrote to President Barack Obama’s science czar, John P. Holdren, expressing their “serious concerns about the potential health risks of the recently adopted whole body backscatter X-ray airport security scanners.” It’s a letter the mainstream media — which constantly parrots the TSA line on the scanners — has almost totally ignored.

The researchers were John Sedat, Ph.D., professor emeritus in biochemistry and biophysics, Marc Shuman, M.D., UCSF professor and a cancer expert and David Agard, Ph.D., and Robert Stroud, Ph.D., professors, X-ray crystallographers, imaging experts and members of the National Academy of Sciences.

The TSA claims the dose the machines emit is comparable to the amount of cosmic radiation exposure that all airline travelers receive, or about the same as a chest X-ray. But in the letter, the researchers point out that the scanners deliver low beam energy to the skin and underlying tissue. So while the dose of radiation received might be safe if distributed over the entire body, the dose to the skin and tissue may be dangerously high.

Not only that, the team points out that there is no independent safety data available on the scanners, nor has the relevant radiation quantity been characterized by the Food and Drug Administration’s top radiation experts.

So the researchers raise the following concerns about the scanners:

  • Older travelers are at risk from the mutagenic effects of the X-rays due to melanocyte aging.
  • Some female travelers are especially sensitive to mutagenesis-provoking radiation leading to breast cancer.
  • White blood cells are at risk of damage.
  • Immunocompromised individuals — such as those with HIV or undergoing cancer treatment — are at increased cancer risk.
  • The risk to children and adolescents has not been properly evaluated.
  • The risk to developing fetuses in pregnant women has not been determined.
  • There is an increased risk of sperm mutations.
  • There are questions about the risk to the cornea and thymus.

Add to these the chance that the machines could malfunction and emit a higher-than-normal dose and you can see that the Government’s line is, at best, made of gossamer.

I still maintain that the company who makes these knew ‘somebody’ in Washington and did a real good job of convincing them that they were needed for security at airports. Chances are the ‘somebody’ is now a stock holder in this company along with the others that were convinced and jumped on the band wagon.

      Dear Robin from Arcadia, IN,

      Two words: Michael Chertoff.

      Best wishes,

Hey everyone, I just saw this on Brasscheck T.V. Watch this and listen very carefully to what this congressman quotes from Michael Cherthoff. The nicest thing anyone could call Cherthoff at this point is “liar” and “hypocrite” and it blows the whole TSA scam wide open. This should go viral if it hasn’t already:

Thanks Bob when I checked him out I found this.
Chertoff has a lot to gain financially if some of these measures are adopted. Between his private consulting firm, The Chertoff Group, and seats on the boards of giant defense and security firms, he sits at the heart of the giant security nexus created in the wake of 9/11, in effect creating a shadow homeland security agency. Chertoff launched his firm just days after President Barack Obama took office, eventually recruiting at least 11 top officials from the Department of Homeland Security, as well as former CIA director General Michael Hayden and other top military brass and security officials.

I found out this past Thanksgiving that my cousin actually works for this company. You would not believe the lies they have told her as an employee. They told her it was not Radiation, to which I replied to and earlier statement from her claming that she had a radiation badge, then why do you need a radiation badge? She replied they gave it to us. So I asked, and you still do not think it is radiation when they have given you a badge? To which she shrugged her shoulders. Needless to say we have become spineless, sheepish, and we are all ready for the slaughter. Oh by the ay this company gives it execs 100% bonus here boss is only 34 years old, makes 250,000.00 jet sets to Italy, France, Germany etc. Her boss complains if she does not receive 100% bonus every year. Apart from that their company has all the contracts nationally and internationally for these full body

Robin – It has been established that the scanners have been built over the past few years, and they needed to create an event to show that they are ‘necessary’. You noticed that they were installed immediately after the ‘terrorist’ threats were ‘foiled’. And prominent people have stood to gain from the sale of these things. I wish I could remember the names who did.

      • http://www.boblivingstonletter.com/ Bob Livingston

        Dear Kate8,

Here are some, as we documented at http://www.personalliberty.com/conservative-politics/freedom-concerns/intelligence-ties-to-the-underwear-bomber/.

        * Former Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Michael Chertoff lobbies for Rapiscan Systems, one of the leading manufacturers of the scanners. Chertoff’s department purchased five of the scanners in 2005. He hit the news talk shows within hours of the attempted bombing.

        * Another manufacturer is American Science and Engineering. It is represented by former Transportation Security Administration (TSA) deputy administrator Tony Blank, who also once worked for House Speaker Newt Gingrich. Also lobbying for the firm is Chad Wolf, former assistant administrator for policy at TSA and a former aid to Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-Texas), who is the ranking Republican on the transportation committee.

        * Smiths Detection, another screening manufacturer, employs the lobbying firm Van Scoyoc Associates. Working for them is Kevin Patrick Kelly, a former top staffer to Senator Barbara Mikulski (D-Md.), who sits on the Homeland Security Appropriations Subcommittee. Former Rep. Helen Delich Bentley (R-Md.) also works for Smiths.

        * L-3 Systems is represented by former Sen. Al D’Amato (R-N.Y.), and is said to have developed one of the most sophisticated systems available.

These are some of the major players. There are more.

        Best wishes,
        Bob

        • Kate8

Bob – Thank you for that info. It is even worse than I thought.

    • Anthony

      Robin -
Let’s not make this into some MOVIE.

The bottom line here, is this contraption was something they were working on, perfecting if you will, to this step in the Police State change to our Free America could be affected in the proper measure.

There is a picture of the White House with the Hitler Nazi banners hanging down the front of it. I just saw it yeseterday on another website. If I can find it again, I’ll post the link. TRUST ME – it riles you to your sole, because it is so friggin’ true.

This backscatter scanner machine is a part of the Military Industrial Complex. I have no doubt there are even more deadly contraptions in waiting for when the true patriots start coming outta the woodwork, especially over S.510, amongst others.

Remember this – the people in charge are about 25 years ahead of the rest of us, when it comes to ANY electronics.

      Just sayin’…..

  • richard

they all are aware of the israli system. they had multi-faceted reasons for doing this. none of which benefit the population.

  • Robert

Lets drop the ineffective xray machines and get to what works best. Profiling!!!!

    • Polski

When my grandparents emigrated from Poland to the United States in 1912, there was a quota for Polish allowed to immigrate into the United States LEGALLY. My grandparents had to live in Toronto, Ontario, Canada until 1915 before their turn to be LEGAL immigrants into the United States came up. What is that term they use nowadays for this kind of profiling???????

    • http://www.chinadroll.com Cecilie

When I told my American friend this, she said: Yes, but the people doing the scanning in the US are among the least educated in the country, they are right DOWN there with soldiers as one of the few jobs they can get, They are like MacScan.”
Therefore there must be a sea change in attitude about who should do the scanning at airports and they must be highly trained. Now it seems to be: Three year old blond boy in wheelchair: Highly suspect. Woman in burqa: Better avoid.

      • Bus

This could be solved by airports opting out of the government monopoly TSA and hiring a private firm to do the screening. The market forces would ensure that their proceedures would be worthwhile and cost effective.
But what a mess we will be in when the TSA goons get a union!

  • Polski

Just remember, ALL politicians are CROOKS. All corporate CEOs and executives are CROOKS. All media are Corporations, completely different from the media that was protected when our country was first formed, and the law on media should be changed to account for this.

  • Marty

Don’t go thru the scanners. Your’e being sterilized!!!!

    • Jo Ann

I suggest we have Janet Napolitano subject herself to the scanners 10, maybe 100 times to show how “safe they are. And while she is at it, have the “pat-downs” with the same gloves that have been contaminated 100 or more times with multiple germs and diseases do the check on her.

      • Carlucci

Absolutely -! And have that idiot Senator Claire McCaskill of Missouri subjected to the same. Remember her? She is the moron who described the molestation as “love pats”. When I heard that I thought this was someone who obviously hadn’t “gotten any” in decades…….

        • Kate8

Hey, I think members of Congress should all have to be subject to random patdowns and scanners, just like the rest of us.

Can you imagine the humiliation and horror this would cause them? They should go through dread and dehumanization as those they think it’s fine to impose it on.

          • Kate8

That should be “impose on us”.

            Sheesh.

An x-ray is basically a negative. Do you really think that anyone with picture editing software or a darkroom used for makng prints from negatives can’t make a black and white print of whatever is saved in one of these TSA low level x-ray scanners?
Wake up people, “YOUR JUNK IS ON DISPLAY AT THE TSA”

  • newspooner

Here’s an idea and plan for your consideration: File an administrative complaint with the FDA because there have been no “double-blind studies” done on this equipment, so its use is violating the regulations regarding medical treatment. Or, file for an injunction in the appropriate state or federal court, seeking to have the use of this equipment stopped because the TSA is “practicing medicne without a license”.

    • Teresa

Not to mention their not releasing the records to the individual…lol, or signing a HIPA form…lol

  • http://www.hangingpawn.com/ Tim

How many terrorists has the TSA caught again?

    • 1955 The Keeper

First of all I’m am NOT here to glorify what TSA is participating in as it applies to national security and the ways they seem determined to achieve their goals, however, I am a Security Officer for the State of Arkansas and the first level of deterrence to any criminal action is mere presence of an officer. TSA does not have to “catch” a terrorist in order to be effective at what they are in place to do. But, they have to follow through with a change in basic philosophies before they will become cost effective and stop squandering tax dollars in useless technologies which can be over come by professional and determined extremists and will eventually go the way of the dodo bird in obsolescence within the next couple of years. Leaving us dependent of the next version of bigger, badder, and more expensive gadgets out there on the horizon. Now, having stated this, the issues which defy all reason and protocols in good security work is; (1) That “BEHAVIORAL” not racial profiling, should be used instead of relying on technology to save the day and (2) become universally consistent with evaluation and search of all individuals wishing to board a commercial aircraft regardless of ethnicity, religion, national origin, gender, or age. In otherwords, as We The People of The United States of America have socially evolved into, there will be no discrimination or exclusion allowed in any process which affects the safety and well being of the peoples of this country. Every last human being who wishes to be placed in the airspace above our country regardless of their national origin or title/position will be allowed to opt out of this process. As the old country adage states, “What is good for the goose is also good for the gander.”

      • 1955 The Keeper

I thought that I had read through my entry throughly before I sent it but I did not. What I meant to express was this, “Every last human being who wishes to be placed in the airspace above our country regardless of their national origin or title/position will NOT be allowed to opt out of this process.”

  • American Conservative

Can’t dogs be used to find out the dangerous stuff cheaper and faster–with the old metal detectors to catch any other hardware? Wouldn’t that be safer for everyone? I know there’s probably no dirty money in that, but couldn’t it be tested and tried?

    • Teresa

could, but its put in place to purposely go after our civil rights, to anger us, to start a riot. They are purposely allowing jihads to confront the TSA and start law suits against our civil rights…ON PURPOSE…it is all orchestrated! Please everyone wake up for they are deliberately and purposely allowing jihads and muslims to attack our civil rights to destroy our Constitution and Holder will fight for their rights! You will NEVER hear the President stand against them. It is a crying shame when our fathers fought and died for our freedom to have it destroyed this way….PLEASE WAKE UP! Look around you, you do not have to believe me just look around you the facts are there to see…..Do you EVER hear of Holder taking a case to defend a Jew or Christian? The man is a joke!

The letter was to the point, but as usual the powers that be choose to ignore. Note in the letter they suggest review from and “impartial panel” of experts. Good luck, each and every one could be bought for a price, I’m sure…

Like I said previously, it’s an x-ray, and too many x-rays can cause cancer. My Dad and 5 of the men his age who were required to have chest x-rays once a year all dies of esophageal cancer. They worked for C & H Sugar, and only one of the 6 even worked anywhere near the sugar. I repeat, too many x-rays can cause cancer

  • Barbara SC

I have stopped flying. I know that’s not a practical option for everyone, but whenever I can I choose to drive rather then fly and be subjected to invasive, humiliating and possibly dangerous security practices. I used to be a frequent flyer, but I have only been on an aircraft twice now in the past two years. I fear the increased risk of radiation and I abhor the full-body pat-downs you have to endure as an alternative. One thing I surely don’t miss is the airline’s version of “customer service.” It almost seems sometimes that they have gone out of their way to create a hostile environment for the consumers of their product.

    • Carol

I’m with you. I have no desire to have some pervert putting his hands on me and I don’t trust the scanners. I stopped flying at the time of the airplane hi-jackers. We had been to my father-in-laws funeral and were held back as potential hi-jackers by United Airlines in Denver. We were wearing our normal western clothes. And to make things even worse, one of my bosses was on that same plane. We never received an apology and had to sit 7 rows apart because no one would move to let us sit together.

  • fa

    From ‘the Letter’ (page 2):
    B) A fraction of the female population is especially sensitive to mutagenesisprovoking
radiation leading to breast cancer. Notably, because these women,
who have defects in DNA repair mechanisms, are particularly prone to cancer,
X-ray mammograms are not performed on them. The dose to breast tissue
beneath the skin represents a similar risk.
Now, if it alters DNA in those who have ‘defects’, does it do anything to normal DNA? I thought that there was something out there stating just that, but I can’t find it right now. If anyone knows, please enlighten.
    Thanks

    • Ret

Unfortunately, the government is of, by and for big business. We’re just the suckers. Why? Because we have been systematically brainwashed across the board. Surveys of people who DON’T fly are all for these measures, we don’t want to hurt the feelings of people who clearly state that their religion dictates all infidels should either convert or be killed, people without children want all children vaccinated with products containing mercury, what we buy for ‘food’ is not allowed in Europe, we’re broke, but the powers that be don’t want the tax cuts for the ultra wealthy to expire. It never stop, and it won’t stop until enough people start thinking for themselves. Alas, I think it’s already too late.

    • Ali

      Hi fa,
Ionising radiation can damage any DNA, but there are mechanisms that usually fix it. But if you have particular mutations in your DNA already, then the damage is less likely to be fixed and you would be more likely to get cancer. The defects are called BRCA1 and BRCA2 – you can google them. 1 in a few hundred women have them.

Well Jack the thing for TSA to do now is send a terrorist or two and see if they get caught. Oh they have and they didn’t get caught. Well sooner or later it will work if they keep trying. Add: wanted person to do government investagation work, short term but will get retirement on completing one task.

  • http://BobLivingstone C.E.

Thank you, Jack. To the point – right on! The TSA should be disbanded and the lies, deceit and profit-making scheme behind this intrusion into our lives, our personal freedom and integrity, MUST BE EXPOSED FOR WHAT IT IS and we should be able to walk into the airport and get on the plane without any checking of our bodies or belongings. I used to travel the world but now I do not want to go to the airport and I feel trapped. This country does not have high speed rail which is available in Europe, the U.K., China and Japan, but it is a form of transport which is very much needed in the USA.

Jack’s information needs to be out there for ALL to see, understand and say “That’s enough”! It (the TSA) has to be halted. It is a shameful waste of our money; it is shameful that the government would authorize such disgusting, intrusive behavior against its citizens and create supposed “events” (or actual non-events) to “justify” their elaborate scheme. I would say the number of people whose rights have been violated is in the millions, not thousands……

the federal govt requires all radiologic tecnicians–x-ray techs. to be registered and licensed.. the educational requirements are 24 continuous months of theory and clinical education. then a 5 hour board examination to be able to handle x-ray machines which produce ionizating radiation to human patients. but now it is all right for drop out dolts to mass radiate human travelers.. what about those standing in those long lines being irradiated until they get to front of the line? backscatter radiation is dirty radiation and cumulative. the public will pay in more ways than just for the machines and the politically connected builders of these machines. they will pay with their health and maybe their lives. Where is the FDA approval after years of studying a machine that delivers radiation to humans? This is the only time any device has not had extensive studies done before it was used on the general public.
How about a lawsuit from a female who didn’t know she was pregnant or didn’t want to inform her travelling companions in the middle of the airport of the fact. Should every female of childbearing age have a pregnancy test before being scanned?
This is not just massive fraud, but ethically a nightmare.
