More Evidence Of Crimes In S. Kordofan

WASHINGTON, Aug. 18 (UPI) — Evidence continues to surface that war crimes and crimes against humanity are being committed in Sudan’s border state of South Kordofan, advocates say.

Khartoum announced that it sent a delegation to South Kordofan, near the border of South Sudan, to relay “a message of peace,” the state-run Sudan News Agency reported.

Allegations have surfaced of ethnically motivated killings and other atrocities in the border state. Though a 2005 peace deal ended Sudan’s civil war and paved the wave to the south’s independence, border conflicts and issues related to oil hinder peace in Sudan.

The Satellite Sentinel Project, which had reported early evidence of crimes in South Kordofan, announced it had new reports based on visual evidence and witness accounts of more mass graves in the region.

John Prendergast, who co-founded The Satellite Sentinel Project along with film star George Clooney, said disputes over the basic facts on the ground reminded him of the genocide in Darfur.

“Evidence continues to mount of war crimes and crimes against humanity committed by the Sudan government,” he added in a statement.

U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay said such “flagrant and repeated violations” were a “serious matter” that can’t go unpunished.
