PORTLAND, Ore., Aug. 16 (UPI) — An Oregon woman whose botched circumcision on her 3-month-old son left him bleeding and in severe pain received five years of probation.
Keemonta Peterson, 30, of Portland, who pleaded guilty to first-degree criminal mistreatment, must undergo mental health treatment and work with a mental health probation officer as part of a plea agreement, The Oregonian reported.
Inspired by the Old Testament, Peterson wanted to have her son circumcised but thought he was too old to have doctors perform the procedure so she decided to do it at home in October 2010, the newspaper said.
She first watched YouTube videos on circumcision.
After it went awry, she called 911 and doctors completed the procedure. The boy has fully recovered, Multnomah County Deputy District Attorney John Casalino said.
The boy and three of his siblings are now under the state’s care and Peterson can see them only with supervision.
Scott Raivio, Peterson’s court-appointed lawyer, called her “a very natural, caring and loving mother” and said the circumcision was “an aberration during a down period in her life.”
Multnomah County Circuit Judge Eric Bergstrom told Peterson, “The reality is you love your children and had absolutely no intent to harm your child.” He said no benefit would come from her serving more than the 28 days she had already been in jail.
