Moderate Nutrient Deficiency Shown To Have Effects Similar To Serious Diseases

June 3, 2011 by

Moderate nutrient deficiency shown to have effects similar to serious diseasesThe trace mineral selenium is present in many sources of protein and carbohydrates. While most Americans get adequate amounts of the nutrient, researchers at the Children’s Hospital Oakland Research Institute recently revealed that even a moderate deficiency can have harmful effects on the body.

The scientists found that inadequate levels of selenium cause mechanisms in cells and tissue to protect essential proteins at the expense of seemingly less-important proteins. The loss of these molecules may lead the body to display characteristics similar to those found in patients with cancer, heart disease, immune disorders or cognitive decline.

“This paper should settle any debate about the importance of taking a good, complete multivitamin every day,” said Gerald Weissmann, M.D., editor of the FASEB Journal.

Authors of the study said the findings demonstrate how vitamin and mineral deficiency affect the body over a long period of time. Additionally, this kind of research may help individuals to determine their optimal nutrient intake in the future.

Further research will be needed to determine whether other nutrient inadequacies have the same physiological effects as those of selenium deficiency.

I would rather die happy. Like the first lady, more ice cream & ribs.
It is irrational to think that any single payer social program will work. It is irrational for nations to tax its way out of poverty. It is irrational to help overpopulated poorer nations by becoming one. It is irrational to believe that a power convinced that you have nowhere else to go will do your biding.

A true Conservative and a true Liberal agree on one thing though for different reasons. Any single payer social program is a nutty idea! Now each believes that it’s not so nutty as long as their side is managing it. Pubs and Dems call rational people cruel, heartless nut cases. Rational and irrational also no longer hold true meaning.

The topic is NUTRIENTS. In the old days, a farmer would grow food for his family and deposit ‘processed food’ in an out-house where essential minerals would be recycled back to the land. Now we have mega-farms that send produce to the cities where ‘processed food’ is dumped into a sewer system that eventually dumps into an ocean. As a result, most farms are deficient of essential minerals because most fertilizers do not contain trace elements such as selenium, iodine, manganese, chromium, Molybdenum, etc. Unless you eat a lot of seafood or take a muti-vitamin with minerals, you will probably be deficient in these essential nutrients. The result will be an impaired immune system that cannot contain many diseases including cancer.

      Russ Lemon,

You are so right. There is all this talk with ecoli and such but there was never that situation years ago. I believe the problem comes in with the over use of anti-biotics and not waiting long enough for mother nature to compost the waste properly before spreading it on fields. I also believe the ecoli problem is a terrorist problem. It is mighty strange to me that there are suddenly developed new strains of this problem ! One strain from one country and another strain from another country thousands of miles away and they have just come together and developed this new master strain. How long does it take to develope something like this in nature, and how long does it take to develope in a lab setting? I grow my own veggies and when I buy from the super market I bring it home and wash it real good with a type of soap made for such things. You can’t just bring things home any more and throw them in the fridg. or freezer, you must take proper care of them as soon as you bring them home before someone reaches in and grabs a carrot or cheery tomato to chew on. My kids use to grab a stalk of celery and slather on some peanutbutter , for a snack when they got home from school. I always made sure the veggies were washed before they went into the fridg. We need to also see that a good multi-vitamin is taken once every day. Not just any old vitamin but a good one. To many vitamins today are being thrown together with chemical ingredients, that in some cases are not even usable by the human body, and sold to the unsuspecting public. This is a good way to get over doses of vitamins. Try to use all natural if at all possible. You will rarely find an overdose of natural vitamins. In fact I have never heard of one. Now that is not the story with synthetic vitamins. They can kill you if you over dose especially a child on chewables. Grow your own foods as much as possible and learn to do it naturally and organicly. It takes time but is well worth it !

Yes, but there are things we cannot do anything about. Here in Australia the Governments have put Sodium Fluoride Pesticide Poison into the water ignoring the Warning of the WHO NOT to do it because of the serious medical problems resulting from it.

The same thing has happened here in the US, a long time ago. I think I was around 12 when they were doing all that. It is a shame to think that so many people think they know what is good for everyone else only to find out years later that they are killing a lot of people and causing cancer in a lot more ! I have a well but that doesn’t mean that I’m not still getting a lot of trash that has been getting into the aquafer ! Get this, when I was a kid fluoride was considered a anti cavity chemical so the local gov. set up treatment centers in the schools and applied it to the teeth of all of us kids in school! Never did anything for my cavity problem, today I wear dentures ! Go figure !
