Mind Your Mother, Eat Your Fruits And Vegetables

“An apple a day keeps the doctor away.” You’ve heard this saying your whole life. It’s stuck around so long because it’s true.

It can also be said that whole foods (fruits and vegetables, especially eaten raw) every day will keep the doctor away. If more Americans ate their fruits and vegetables, as their mothers told them growing up, there would be much less disease and obesity.

Unfortunately, most people choose the easy route and eat processed foods. Processed foods are foods we buy already prepared and foods that we cook. These are incomplete foods, mostly dead and unable to support life.

In addition to promoting obesity, eating a diet predominated by meats and processed foods leads to acidity in the body, disease and death.

Obesity and acidity can be combated by simply changing your diet to raw fruits and vegetables.

They are live foods that foster life and health by providing fiber, phytonutrients, antioxidants and promoting an alkaline state in the body. They help the body fight disease, eliminate free radicals, reduce the chances of developing cancer and end digestive problems.

The experts say to eat at least five servings of fruits and vegetables a day. I say five’s not nearly enough.

    Your facts about food are right, Bob Livingston.

    I think the commercials and FDA have done an extremely poor job pushing fresh fruits and vegetables as healthy and necessary for the human body to function well and be healthy. And I have not heard ‘the apple a day’ slogan from those sources since I was a small child. Your second to last paragraph is KEY.

    We make our own fresh ‘Green Smoothies’ that we drink daily:
    1 bunch kale or spinach (about 1 1/2 cups guesstimate)
    2 bananas
    1 cup apple juice
    1 cup crushed ice
    2 tbsp organic sugar
    Blend all ingredients well in blender and drink cold.

    Sometimes we all other fresh or frozen fruits (but never canned). One should rotate the greens and can use other greens and lettuces. Go on line to look up the vitamin and mineral content of each to see what benefits you are getting. Go to kale.us to learn more. Even our sons drink them!

    This winter my sons and I actually planted seeds of Siberian kale and spinach in October 2011 and we have been harvesting the leaves to make our Green Smoothies since late December. If your leafy greens are not growing so well add (lawn)lime. We also are growing our own strawberries which are growing fruit this month and have a young fruit orchard of peaches, apples, plums, apricots, and pears… some of which are already flowering.

      Christin, I like your Green Smoothie idea and I plan to follow up on this routine, also. Your orchard really interest me; because I too have an orchard of apples, pears, plums, peaches, muscadines, jujube, pomegrant, wolfberries, cherries, and blueberries; all at some stage of production. My most recent planting is six olive trees. I live in the deep south and the muscidine (southern grape) is the only thing that will not grow in cold temperature zones. I have a friend near me, who grows bananas. The muscadines, jujube, pomegrant, wolfberries (goji), and blueberries all have an abundance of anti-oxidents. My plans are to make my own juices, cider, frozen/dried fruits/berries, Because i am only 35 miles from the Gulf of Mexico, I can also grow citrus, with a little protection when the trees are very young. We grow a Satsuma, (Mandarin orange), which taste very sweet plus providing loads of Vit C.

        Everyone who has come to work on our house or land ends up getting a Green Smoothie!
        My spouse usually makes them, passes them out, and everyone loves them… though I’m sure that was not their first impression… you know, the Green Eggs and Ham syndrome.

        You can learn more in the book, “Green for Life” by Victoria Boutenko. Very Informative. And she has many recipes for Green Smoothies in both her books, “Green Smoothie Revolution – The Radical Leap Towards Natural Health”.

        Sounds like you maybe live in Texas, too? We have wild muscadine grapes and huckleberries growing on our land, too, but they have suffered in the sweltering heat and drought the last two years. I may eventually need to purposely make a grape vineyard so that they can get watered and produce even in that harsh climate.

        I did not mention it, but we have a young pomegranate and a blackberry patch as well.
        We are further inland now and probably farther north of you and growing citrus is probably out, though growing satsuma and goji berries sounds great. However, if you are farther south I do not know how you are growing cherries as they told me there had to be a long cold freezing time in the winter for the cherries to produce in spring. Our Avocado tree did not make it through the freezing temps this winter.

    The problem is that even our foods are no longer natural or real or pure. I stopped drinking apple cider and apple juice in 1979, the year I spent 3 months on an apple farm and saw how they were grown (the farmers wore scuba gear when they drove the tractors and sprayed the orchards with chemicals after each rain). Apples were the number one most polluted food last year, so only use fresh apple and be sure to PEEL THEM! Strawberries (all berries are exceptionally good for you) are another in the top ten that are polluted beyond belief. They are one of my favorite flavors but I won’t buy them unless they are organic, the same with strawberry jam. My knowledge has ruined it for me and I can no longer eat what everybody else eats. Of course I only go to a doctor once a decade and I have to pay him cash and I seldom get sick. .

      Yes, I have heard this about the apples and strawberries, too, that is why I am trying to grow my own. You can find Organic Apple juice in many stores.

      I agree that learning about the fruits and foods that are irradiated, tainted with chemicals, and altered by GMO (genetically modified organisms)… including metabolically-altered white granulated sugar AND milk / meats with antibiotics and growth hormones, has ruined the choices of foods we wish to eat as well.

      The evil Liberal utopia isn’t working for me either.

      I agree with you. They say “ignorance is bliss”. I have learned things I wish I didn’t know; it would make my life a whole lot happier. I always try to remember the Serenity Prayer, but it doesn’t work very well. The food, water and air has been so polluted and the organic foods are too pricey, one may eat donuts and stuff like that; can’t be much worse for a person. Plus, true organic food would have to be grown in a dome, away from the polluted air and water in order to be truly organic and pollution free.

    I think your smoothie is a good idea, I mak’em myself and a smoothie with a good grilled steak, chicken, lamb or ribs goes well with that repast……

      That’s great, ONTIME… but it is better to eat fruit or drink smoothies with fruit one hour before a meal or two hours after to aid in good digestion. The fruit slows down the digestion and gives one that bloating feeling. The nutrition in fruit is absorbed by the body in less than 20 minutes, but needs time to move through the system before adding other foods like proteins and starches.

    There’s no money in making you well, that’s why fresh fruits & veggies aren’t pushed. As long as the FDA is going to keep screwin with our food, then they should be the ones to foot the bill for our health.

      You are right, raw, but ‘people should not do what they WANT’ (money for themselves), ‘but do what they OUGHT’ (because it is good and right for all.)

      I have learned that eating healthy, good hygiene, and a clean home (to lower germ levels) actually keeps one healthy and prevents one from getting illnesses and diseases…
      …guess that is why the FDA and other gov agencies don’t want us to have healthy food… their Big Pharma drugs and useless, tainted vaccines wouldn’t be needed… how will the Elite get wealthy if they can’t convince Americans that we NEED to pay for their products: vaccines, drugs, (chemically sprayed, GMO seeds (infertility), GMO herbicides (sterility), or irradiated) unhealthy foods…

      Wish we knew about this ages ago…
