Michigan Fan Proposes At OSU Stadium

COLUMBUS, Ohio, Oct. 12 (UPI) — An Ohio man who has been a lifelong University of Michigan fan said he braved enemy territory to propose to his girlfriend inside Ohio State’s stadium.
Johnny Wakefield, who said he inherited his love of the Wolverines from his Detroit native parents, said he paid $150 to rent Ohio Stadium for one hour so he could propose to Abby Sellers, who inherited a love of Ohio State from her mother and stepfather, at sunset Tuesday on the 50 yard line, The Columbus (Ohio) Dispatch reported Wednesday.
“It was a total shock,” Zellers, 28, said. “I thought we were just celebrating our 10-month anniversary.”
Wakefield, 27, and Zellers struck up an acquaintance after meeting through mutual friends at Olivet Nazarene University in Bourbonnais, Ill., where they both attended college. They said they placed a bet on the 2010 game between their chosen teams and Wakefield’s loss meant he had to have his picture taken in OSU apparel and set the photo as his Facebook profile picture.
“I love football, and it’s great to have a good team to cheer for — although this year has been rough,” Zellers said.
Keli-Jo White, Zellers’ sister, said she was able to fly from South Carolina to witness the proposal when she asked her professor at Medical University of South Carolina if she could retake a portion of her final exam earlier than scheduled. She said it turned out her teacher, Gretchen Seif, graduated from Ohio State in 1993.
“She said her sister was getting engaged on the 50-yard line at Ohio Stadium, could she come in early?” Seif said. “I’m like, ‘Well, yeah.’ ”
Seif said she asked White to bring back photos of the event.
“I wanted to see ‘Michigan’ bow down in Ohio Stadium,” she said.
