Michelle Obama’s Hammer-Subtle Racial Photo Op

For all their acceptance among America’s pseudointellectual elite, Barack and Michelle Obama possess a gift for nuance and subtext that even the most uneducated of jerks would likely find offensive and gauche.

Today, the White House released this insult to everyone’s intelligence (as well as their sense of American unity) on its Flickr page, meta-martyring the first lady under the cruel sign of yesterday’s racists:

Depending on the level of criticism the White House receives over this one, its qualified comment on the photo either will be “we still have a long way to go” (if the criticism is scant), or “look how far we’ve come” (if the criticism is robust).

Michelle Obama laid the groundwork for either reinterpretation during her speech in May, when she spoke to high school graduates in Topeka, Kansas and toured the Brown v. Board of Education National Historic Site – where, obviously, this picture was taken…by White House photographer Chuck Kennedy.

However many more words a picture like this may be worth, given the context – we’re done.
