Melamine-tainted baby formula found in U.S.

November 26, 2008 by

Melamine has made it into American formulaTraces of the toxic chemical melamine have been discovered in samples of U.S. baby formula, the Food and Drug Administration has admitted.

However, in an interview with the Associated Press, the FDA said that the low levels detected are considered by the department to be "perfectly fine" and not dangerous to public health.

In China, melamine has been linked to the death of at least three babies, as well as the illness of tens of thousands of other children. The FDA previously said that it would not set a limit on "acceptable" levels of the chemical in U.S. formula.

Documents obtained by the AP reveal that out of 77 samples of infant formula, one product contained trace amounts of the chemical. Additionally, cyanuric acid – a byproduct of melamine – was discovered in a different product.

The FDA said that the melamine had likely contaminated the formula during the manufacturing process and had not been added deliberately. Trace amounts are defined as under 250 parts per billion.

"There’s no cause for concern or no risk from these levels," agency spokesperson Judy Leon told the New York Times.

Anyone that is using any type of processed “food” is destroying their health. No one should use baby formula as your child will develop many auto-immune disorders throughout their lives including asthma and digestive problems.

Nice that MEN can so easily reply with such comments such as these. I am a mother of three, educated and a stay at home mom. I would absolutely LOVE to have been able to breastfeed my children, but unfortunately, all my medications would have passed into my children, several of them metabolizing into other forms to prove fatal. SO, destroying my babies’ health? I think not. If I would have breastfed, knowing I was on my medications, I would be sitting in a prison right now instead of reading how ignorant consumers of America, once again, cannot fathom the entire picture of society. Let me guess what your next comment may be? Perhaps because I cannot breastfeed my newborn, maybe I shouldn’t be entitled to be pregnant? I’m allowed to switch medications during pregnancy to be safe for us both, but after, I must go back.
As consumers, we expect out products to be safe, especially in these desperate economic times where we cannot afford organic and expensive products. We TRUST companies to provide us with products that they would, themselves, feed their families. Unfortunately, they’re too concerned with the bottom-line.

Is it the medication that makes you so angry? Why are you on so much medication? Will you be able to raise your children if your health is so poor? Just because you expect something does not mean it is the way you expect it to be. You are absolutely insane to have blind faith in commercial enterprise. Corporations have only one lawful responsibility and that is to increase shareholder value. Did you every think it might be wiser to find a wet nurse?

Breast milk is and always has been the best food for babies. Formula should only be used in extreme circumstances where breast milk cannot be provided. Unfortunately, the decision to breast feed babies is commonly passed over for the “convenience” of formula. This decision can have dramatic and lasting impacts on the health of the child. Bob.

    • Jane More

Clearly Bob has not ever tried to breastfeed. Not only can it be difficult it can also be painful. It is wonderful if you are able and willing to do this but it is a challenge for a lot of women who have to work. I agree that we should be able to trust that the food we purchase for our children is safe!

Perhaps someone can explain to me why formula is not a sufficient and healthy food for infants? And why hasn’t something been done about it up to this point. The cost alone should indicate that a consumer should be getting a healthy alternative to breast milk. Two of my children could not drink formula, they projectile vomited every bottle and I could not breast feed so I used canned milk supplemented with vitamin drops. No problems they were healthy children and are healthy adults. My other two children used SMA and Enfamil and they both suffer from asthma and one has thyroid problems. Had I of known that infant formula was not a healthy alternative I would have given them the canned milk as well. This makes me angry!

Not all moms can breast feed and we should be able to trust our food is safe. What are the brands that this melamine have been found in?

    • jane

Note – I understand that it is found in Enfamil and Similac has some and there are others. This is a Plastic chemical that with other chemicals can cause cancer and brain damage in infants. at least that is what is being told in smaller info leaks. The mainstream media is not reporting correctly as usual as the story line is subject to control by the FDA reporting on themselves and we all know that the manufactures have Lobbyists to offset Truth!

      • http://PersonalLibertyNewsDesk Annemarie

It’s been found in Enfamil Lipil with Iron, Similac, Nestle Good Start Supreme and another. They’re still testing, and from what I hear, they’re going to start to pull formulas off shelves. They’re also concerned about powdered milk products in such things like hot dogs, chicken nuggets, and pizza dough. They “say” it’s from the lining of the can that the powdered milk is stored in and wouldn’t deliberately add it into their products because there’s no economic advantage…. I find that hard to believe. I’m stunned. I have a child that’s going through some kidney/bladder problems and now I think I know why. Another one of my children has been having “stomach” problems since 2007 that has gone undiagnosed, looks like i’ll be asking for a urinalysis tomorrow from the pediatrician’s office.

  • Diane

If breast feeding is not viable, what is the affordable alternative to baby formula?

    • http://PersonalLibertyNewsDesk Annemarie

Ask your pediatrician, you can actually make your own.

Bob and Lawrence. Thank you for your input. I just find it so amazing you want women to breastfeed–Is that because it get you out of having to do anything? So you breastfeed your baby and as they get older they start going to McDonalds and other fast food joints. Sure you have control where they go, but not every single time. They are at school and there certainly is not “healthy” food there. Bob, you state that formula is convenient. Well, yeah, it is to you– but a for a woman,- it may be the only way to feed her baby. Believe it or not women do work , pay bills, get the kids to school, go to sporting events and make sure her family is well taken care of and to “blame” her for not breastfeeding is just silly to me. Yeah, it is definitely healthy for the baby, but it isn’t for everyone. No, I am not a feminist.

Is clear that the FDA does not CARE about anyone’s interests, but their own!
Women can breast feed/store milk when they they are working. The mother
has to watch her diet as well, as what goes into the mother, goes into the
    baby…
My grandmother worked in the fields, had babies, and no fast food…she cooked
homecooked meals… I think alot of stuff is being put in our food these days….
This country is not what it used to be…people need to be on guard and informed
of all antics going on! My heart goes out to all mom’s/parents….

  • Bee

The FDA does not care. No this country is not what it once was. I guess the government has to have a way of getting rid of people. What better place to start than with our food.

I agree breast feeding is usually best but as others have stated not every person is capable of doing so. On top of that it should be the mothers choice. Men really have no understanding of how it is for a woman, so they really need to understand that we women don’t like being told what we should and shouldn’t do regarding our bodies. When they starting birthing children and breast feeding then they can say all they want. Also, as others have stated, we should be able to trust our food supply. You have to be afraid to even feed your dog or cats. I say quit importing so much and start producing more of the foods that we need here in the United States ourselves. A lot of foods that are imported we are capable of producing here. For example Oranges, why do we import oranges? We can grow them here. No wonder our economy is in the shape its in. Whether it’s food or a vehicle, a rug for your house or whatever else, quit outsourcing and we can rebuild our countrys financial situation. Anyway, got off track there but it’s just one more thing to deal with.

I had a painful experience trying to nurse my first baby, but continued and found success. Not only is breastfeeding important nutritionally, but for other bonding reasons as well. If a working mother will stick with pumping at work, etc. so she can give her baby breast milk, she will be glad she did down the road. It is a sacrifice well worth making. Also, the majority of mothers can breast feed and provide enough milk, but sometimes you may need some advice from a lactation specialist, (they are easy to find, ask around, and not expensive, I got advice free) so that you can avoid improper mouth placement and some of those problems that discourage mothers from breastfeeding. They can also help you learn how to increase your milk supply etc. I totally agree that we have to be very cautious about information from the FDA. Corruption is increasingly a problem everywhere, not just Enron! It would help if we were still an honest people with ethics and morals- it would prevent a lot of these problems. Best of luck.

Men are smarter than women thats the first thing and God created Man first than woman and Adam was the one that name all of the animals not Eve. Of course for the liberal woman she doesnt like to be told how to do and what to do this is where she makes the first mistake. Like Bob pointed out that breast feeding is the best thing for the baby because a person as hard as he try cannot substitute what God put into nature. Its natural and the best thing that a baby can have we gather around with many married couples and all of them breast feed there kids i know of plenty of families with 5-10 kids that breast fed all of their kids. In America we are used to conviniences and baby formula offers that convinience.

It is easier to say than do, but We need to avoid processed foods. It is just a matter of retraining our thinking.
