Media Blame All But The Guilty

December 20, 2012 by

Media Blame All But The Guilty
APN

Soon after the details of Adam Lanza’s heinous and purely evil criminal actions at Sandy Hook Elementary School were revealed, Americans largely decided that the political conversations that would inevitably result should be held off until the small bodies of the vile murderer’s victims had at least been removed from the school.

Conservative commentators and gun-rights advocates mostly did just that. In fact, in spite of the “what do you have to say for yourselves know” sneering from some on the left, the National Rifle Association refused to comment on the tragedy until Tuesday.

When the NRA did release a statement after five days of shouting from those opposed to the organization, here’s what it said:

The National Rifle Association of America is made up of four million moms and dads, sons and daughters — and we were shocked, saddened and heartbroken by the news of the horrific and senseless murders in Newtown. Out of respect for the families, and as a matter of common decency, we have given time for mourning, prayer and a full investigation of the facts before commenting. The NRA is prepared to offer meaningful contributions to help make sure this never happens again.

While the NRA has avoiding making political statements about the tragedy, the organization has no choice but to prepare to battle an onslaught of anti-gun legislation slated to be introduced over the next several months.

This is because while the NRA turned off its media microphone, President Barack Obama, several members of Congress (some of whom are exceptionally pro-gun) and members of the media doubled down on blaming everyone and everything for the bloodshed but the sick child-murderer.

American Prepper Network founder Tom Martin explained the phenomenon beautifully in a blog post following the tragedy:

Who is to blame? As with any tragic story of this sort, first come the reports of the attack, followed by prayers for the victims, followed by background information on the attacker, and then comes the blame game. Who was the attacker and why did he do this? What weapon did he use? Guns? What kinds of guns? Where did he get those guns? Who taught him to shoot? Blame will often be thrust upon the parents, and then maybe bullies at school who may have contributed to who this attacker became. Maybe blame will be thrust upon his friends, or the community for not treating him right as he grew up. What about violent video games, movies and TV shows? Society and people around the attacker will often catch the blame. But how often is blame fully put on the murderous evil attackers themselves?

Martin and his organization likely would have had no reason to publicly comment on the tragedy had it not been for the media-fueled blame game. Mixed into the misinformation spread after the murders, Nancy Lanza, killed by her son and unable to retort, was painted as being affiliated with a “loosely organized network of gun enthusiasts, back-to-the-land types and the generically cautious.” That is how the mainstream media describe American preppers.

In a piece published by Salon writer Katie McDonough, the writer glanced over the organization’s website long enough to copy and paste a few of the group’s “Five Principles of Preparedness.”

The principle categories include the following headings:

1)      Practice thrift and frugality

2)      Seek to be independent

3)      Become industrious

4)      Strive toward self-reliance

5)      Aspire to have a year’s supply of every needful thing

The five principles advocate nothing but tips on how to achieve the utmost sense of personal and social responsibility. You can read them in their entirety here.

But the Salon writer deducted the following from the APN’s five principles:

Statements aside, preppers undoubtedly attract a fringe element. The APN site talks often and explicitly about “The End of the World As We Know It,” which it refer to as TEOTWAWKI. And judging from the abundance of videos and blogs of self-identified preppers arming themselves while touting conspiracies about government, financial collapse and the apocalypse, it’s clear this isn’t strictly a peaceful movement of people hoarding canned goods.

Preppers don’t just stockpile nonperishables — they collect weapons. Like Nancy Lanza, who owned five guns — three of which were used in the Sandy Hook massacre — preppers believe having weapons is just as important as having enough water.

Because McDonough was either on too tight a deadline or too lazy to speak to an actual member of the APN, which caused her to make fallacious assumptions about preparedness buffs, Personal Liberty sought an interview with a prepper and APN volunteer to clear a few things up.

APN volunteer, self-described prepper and Ham radio operator Robert Hawkins answered the phone when we called a number related to APN. Though Hawkins did not speak directly on behalf of APN, he offered his perspective as an individual prepper and a volunteer in the group.

“In my opinion,” Hawking said. “The media-sensationalized feeding frenzy that is going on right now is targeting preppers because people are desperately grasping for an answer to why this young man would do something like this. Preppers have been thrown to the forefront of the discussion because of some media mention that his mother was involved in prepping.”

Hawking pointed out that it was unfortunate that the media, not understanding much about what it actually means to be a prepper, had attempted to portray Lanza’s mother as possibly unhinged when she was just as much of a victim of his killing spree as the children at Sandy Hook Elementary.

A prepper is explained by many to be a more mainstream equivalent to the traditional off-the-grid survivalist. The APN does not advocate any one aspect of prepping or survival. For instance, it doesn’t advocate gun ownership or food storage outright, but rather encourages Americans to learn the skills necessary to handle any situation. Once the skills are acquired, most people can then come to informed decisions about what they should have on hand at all times.

That is a big sticking point for members like Hawking, who believes the way preppers are being described currently in mainstream media and popular culture is completely off base.

“What we’re all about is self-reliance. It is about making an individual effort to provide for yourself what you need to get along,” he said. “It isn’t about preparing against invasion, government takeovers or zombies.”

Hawking explained that in his view, prepping had more to do with little, everyday things.

“The idea nowadays that everyone has to rely on some kind of outside support is totally false,” he said. “You can maintain quite comfortably many modern necessities with very little more than your own knowledge and preparation. That’s what it is about to me, the ‘how-to’ aspect of prepping and how it can help people in their everyday lives.”

Hawking doesn’t deny that a fringe element could be drawn to being a prepper. But he says that more often than not, people who simply want to safeguard themselves against the poor economy and rising prices are the preppers he meets.

As for McDonough’s assertion that preppers believe having weapons is just as important as having enough water, according to Hawking, it is nonsense.

“I know preppers who don’t own guns, who don’t like guns and who don’t feel they have a need to own a gun,” he said, re-emphasizing that prepping is about more about everyday self-reliance and less about stockpiling rations and munitions.

Hawking believes that the negative media representations of preppers will eventually stop as more Americans learn the benefits of becoming more self-reliant.

“Most people are rational enough to understand that the media’s portrayal of preppers is distorted,” he said, noting that most often preppers are the people who are out helping in the community when something bad happens, not social recluses living in bunkers with piles of guns.

As an aside, it was reported yesterday that Adam Lanza was a vegan; media hasty generalizations about the possibility of being vegan making one violent were noticeably absent.

The point of being a prepper is in being able to be a responder, able to help others rather than a victim needing help. As such they are the best of, not the worst of, America.

    • Doc Sarvis

Are you saying that if 100 people showed up at one Prepper’s door after “it hits the fan”; that Prepper would freely share his provisions even if it meant the provisions are gone 100 times faster?

      • http://gravatar.com/bychoosing WTS/JAY

The answer is yes, as they obviously will not have a choice. Will they? But it wont be “a 100 preppers” braking down the door, obviously, but more then likely; a 100 ill-prepped socialist-progs!!!

      • Doc Sarvis

I’ll believe that when I see it.

      • Ron The Marine

Well doc? Hell Yes!, if they can pass a lie detector test that they: (1) neither voted for Fast and Furious leaders (suppliers of 100s of assault rifles to their gang bang supporters) BO the liar and E holder the criminal; and they are not brain-washed liberals! IF NOT, HELL NO, “SCREW THEM”!!! If GOD is for us, then who can stand against us!

        Ha, I thought so.

I am prepped for my family’s needs but not for others. I continually tell people to prep and then I tell them not to ask me for any food when that time comes. I continue to tell them that I am a “I told you so kind of guy”. I also tell them that by me telling them to prep and then they don’t, relinquishes me from any obligation to them. I will just say: “I told you so”.

      • eddie47d

Some of you are missing the whole point too! Preppers are not the problem but the propaganda nutjobs that infiltrate their ranks. If it was just about storing food and self protection nobody would even notice. The Mormons have endorsed being prepared for over 150 years and they were left alone. ( on the subject of food storage and sticking together). Now we have every political nut case pushing their programmed doomsday scenarios on everybody else. Most are far fetched and insulting and I doubt if most preppers like them squeezing in on their common sense preparations.

      • CZ52

” Now we have every political nut case pushing their programmed doomsday scenarios on everybody else. ”

And just how are they doing that eddie? No one forces you to listen to them so nothing is being “pushed” onto you.

      Jim from Maine
I still believe that the best thing to do is no new GUN LAWS but to enforce the old RULES
& REGULATIONS that all ready have !!!but what do I know I just live in Maine and proud off it thank you.

  • CZ52

I believe firearms are an important part of prepping, However, they are not the ‘end all be all” of prepping they are just another block in the prepping foundation.

    • http://www.facebook.com/benjamin.fox.98892 Benjamin Fox

CZ52 I agree and would share some food with those who ask but, after the government has brainwashed people into believing they have a right to my food I would fight to keep what I need for my family and my self and wouldn’t think twice about shooting someone who thinks they are going to take it because they have that right. When the you know what hits the fan, many will think it is okay to steal it from my family by force or numbers and that will get someone killed.

  • John

Prep like crazy. Adam Lanza was a drug addict. All these “mass killers” are. Why doesn’t anybody talk about this. Look at this: http://ssristories.com/index.php . It is clear to me the forces of evil do not want to talk about psychotropic drugs.

    • Dan in NH

Obama has been after our guns since day one. I remember someone caught him telling Mrs. Brady that he working under the radar. He’s for the UN Small Arms Treaty. I believe he not only knew about Fast and Furious I believe the purpose was to get Mexico so upset that they would demand that the US Government take our guns but fortunately the whistleblowers spoke out. Now Obama has another chance. These liberals don’t get it gun control doesn’t do anything except make it difficult for law abiding citizens to obtain guns. Crazy people, criminals and terrorist don’t care about the law. They don’t buy weapons the legal way anyways. Criminals and terrorists are armed with automatic machine guns like mach 10 and oozes which aren’t legal anyway and the harder the sentences for gun crimes the more people will be murdered. You force the don’t leave and witnesses because the punishment for gun crimes is more the for murdering someone. Connecticut have tough gun laws. Almost as tough NY and Chicago. The liberals don’t get it. Anywhere where it is easy to get a gun permit and carry the crime rate is left. If any of the teachers were allowed to carry the death toll would have been a lot less but this was a gun free zone so only criminals, crazies or terrorists would carry guns there. The shootings at the theater in Colorado is another example of a gun free zone and again an crazy found that to be a perfect hunting ground. Liberals don’t think logically. If a person is intent on killing a bunch of people he’s already decided to break the law so no amount of legislation will matter. He will look for a soft target. Terrorists do that all the time they don’t look for a hard target they go for the soft ones and anyplace gun free zone is ripe for the taking. Guns aren’t the problem. We don’t have enough people legally carrying guns and we have these gun free zones where you are advertising to the criminals, terrorist and crazies that the only resistance you’ll have is from cops when they finally get there. The idea of banning weapons and high volume magazines will do nothing because those who use them will obtain them anyways remember these people are already intent on braking the law. They are intent on murdering people which is a far greater crime than possession of a illegal weapon. Politicians only want to get our weapons so they can then do whatever they want regardless of what people say and we won’t have the mans to fight back. Liberal Politicians are afraid of us and they should be. They want to change our constitution and we conservatives want to get back to the real meaning of the Constitution. I’m afraid civil war is going to be our only option. If Obama manages to disarm us we’ll never get rid of him. Obama in 4 years has done more damage to this country than all the communist spies over the past 60 years. The Russian state newspaper stated after Obama was reelected that in 4 years our dumbass liberals have done what the KGB couldn’t do in 60 years elect a communist leader. Obama isn’t a socialist he’s a communist which is worse the just a socialist. I just hope when the civil war comes that our military refuses to back Obama then we will end his reign and maybe we can get back to the job of fixing everything the liberals have broken over the past 60 years.

      • eddie47d

Just like I said you give real Preppers a black eye with your nut job propaganda. The more conspiracies you can think of the worse your credibility becomes.

      • ranger09

Very well said, I sure wish that there had been several Armed citizens in that room, The outcome could have been different. But the blame seems to always be put onto Firearms. Its also a shame to listen to these Sick Politicians, And glory hunters the Media, Seems like they harm more people than firearms could ever do. Takes me back To VietNam,Afganistan, And Iraq, But they all seem to ok the govt using firearms, and Bombs to Kill Thousands on both sides.Oh well these People do get Paid alot to speak a lot of garbage. Americans Owning Weapons keep them Free, History tells us so.

    • http://www.facebook.com/benjamin.fox.98892 Benjamin Fox

John wise words, and the government wants to make more drugs legal? God Bless:

  • Gary L

The reason that preppers NEED guns is there are so few people that are even remotely prepared for when the feces hits the rotary oscillator. Some people may ask for help but others will simply come and take what you have even if they have to kill you to do it. People are killed today for a whole lot less. Just wait until there is nothing to eat and no more food stamps.

  • Pete Sagi

I don’t buy for one minute the Adam Lanza nutcase lone shooter story. This whole thing has been too convenient for the Obamanistas and OhBummer himself. And the debate shouldn’t be about why did he do it and how to prevent nutcases from getting guns, but should be about the other evidence quickly supressed by the lamestream media. In otherwords, this event was an inside job, a black op for the express purpose of stampeding the public into accepting gun control.

Furthermore, this business about the NRA … they are a false resistance. They never talk about the real reason for the second ammendment, which had nothing to with “the legitimate interests of sportsman” such as hunters and skeet shooters. It was put in place as a guarantee that 1) the people at large could protect themselves from a criminal element and 2) the people at large would be the unorganized militia that could repel a foreign invader, thereby eliminating the need for a large standing army … always a threat to liberty, expensive to maintain, and a temptation to engage in foreign military adventurism for the sake of gaining an empire and 3) as a deterrent against governments here going rogue and as a corrolary to 3, 4) to ensure the decentralization of political power via the decentralization of the means of deadly force. Bottom line … if we allow our liberty teeth to be pulled, we will become indentured servants.

More on the NRA as a false resistance … Stalin was a huge fan of starting his own false resistance. This allows a tyrant to control his opposition, by getting them all under one umbrella that will ultimately sell out. Count on the NRA to cave and then tell us that the new gun laws are “something we can all live with” and are “sensible” and that we don’t need so-called “assault weapons” for hunting so there is no real reason for them anyways.
But there is a reason … the public needs to be every but as armed as the oinkstablishment as a deterrent against the oinkstablishment getting too far out of line.

    Pete

So there is no hope? What are your solutions, Pete? Where should we go from here? Armed rebellion? Secession? What?

The Media is the real problem..The Media has become equal to Pravda or Tass…The Media is controlled by the elites of the NWO…Propaganda is all the children of America gets starting with a heavy dose from the public school systems and universities….When you all get off your lazy asses and look into who and what your kids are being taught you might see the light..

    • http://MSNHotmail pikemaster

The NRA has been protecting the gun rights for over 140 years and is stronger now than ever. It won’t cave in as you stated now! God bless

      • ranger09

Compromise is a form of weakness, When you are Right accept nothing but 100%. Compromise is a Word mostly used by Politicians, It keeps the Public in their chairs.
The Problem with the NRA is Compromise with the Govt and the Media, As with most large Groups the Leaders want to protect their Income and Perks.

    • eddie47d

Beck,Coulter and Limbaugh are a part of the media and their messages are always sinister and sometimes extremely dangerous. Why would the “mainstream” media pull back when they are up against those wackos?

      • Dan in NH

Mainly because the Lame Stream media only tells what the White House approves of. I hate to tell you but if you have read any history Obama is right in step with Hitler or Stalin or any other Communist. He was right is not a socialist he’s a communist even the Russian state Newspaper said that we’ve elected a communist. He’s doing absolutely nothing to help the economy. Every single new regulation he passes adds one more log on the fire. He’s out to ruing our economy and then declare martial law which it just so happened that he changed the Executive order about Martial Law to allow him to declare it during peace time no other president has done this. Why did he feel it was so necessary to do so? It’s because he’s counting on it. Why did he increase the TSA from 16000 to 86000 people? This is the Civilian army he talked about needing mostly because he doesn’t think the military will back him. Why are they building these large internment camps all over the country? When he’s taken our guns and our property and moved us into large apartment complexes in the cities. Maybe then you’ll see how evil Obama really is. Every businessman knows why they aren’t hiring and they’ve told Obama but he doesn’t really care. He plains on bringing our economy to it’s knees. He’s setting himself up to declare martial law and name himself dictator for life. He has no respect for law or the Constitution. I hope we can stop him but I think the only chance we have now is Civil War.

      • Robert Smith

Dan claims: “Mainly because the Lame Stream media only tells what the White House approves of. ”

        Really?

Bain Capital owns Clear Channel (Rush and his bunch) and Murdock owns Fox.

The rest are pretty much all huge corporations.

There is no such thing as the “left” media.

  • Ron The Marine

SIMPLY AMAZING WHEN YOU THINK ABOUT IT (except for liberal dumb-a _ _ es)

Isn’t it amazing that, within only one week of Tiger Woods crashing his Escalade, the press found every woman with whom Tiger has had an affair during the last few years? And, they even uncovered photos, text messages, recorded phone calls, etc.! Furthermore, they not only know the cause of the family fight, but they even know it was a 9 iron from his golf bag that his wife used to break out the windows in the Escalade. Not only that, they know which wedge! And, each & every day, they were able to continue to provide America with updates on Tiger’s sex rehab stay, his wife’s divorce settlement figures, as well as the dates & tournaments in which he was to play.

NOW, Barack Hussein Obama has been in office for over three years, yet this very same press cannot find any of his childhood friends or neighbors; or find any of Obama’s high school or college classmates or locate any of his college papers or grades; Or determine how he paid for both a Columbia & and Harvard education; Or discover which country issued his visa to travel to Pakistan in the 1980′s; Or even find Michelle Obama’s Princeton thesis on racism. They just can’t seem to uncover any of this. Yet, the public still trusts that same press to give them the whole truth about anything! Don’t you find that totally amazing?

NOW TELL ME THERE IS NO CORRUPTION IN THE AMERICAN PRESS…

    Semper Fi!

    • Right Brain Thinker

Ron, read my posting later in the thread for another look at how the press is a problem. You are correct, Ron, in pointing out how the Tiger Woods thing was “excessive”. However, you are spouting the same old right-wing horsepucky when you bring up the “coverup conspiracy” garbage about O’Bama, and it’s just cluttering up the thread with irrelevancies. Give it up and focus on the problem at hand—-how to keep bad people from doing bad things with guns.

That’s coming from someone who had the same NON-liberal training as you, so don’t start calling me names. The DI’s did that enough to last a lifetime. S/F

    • ranger09

Marine, Its the Public that is to blame, They care more about garbage than they do about whats going on within their Govt. Its called Brainwashing, Its called becoming Sheep instead of Men.
In all my years i have never seen so much Insanity,so much crime, so much drugs, And the people have become more like sheep Just following the Bell.

  • DavidL

I’m a combat veteran, military rifle collector, and competitive handgun shooter. I have no problem with additional gun REGULATIONS. I have no problem limiting the capacity of magazines, a universal background check, and closing any gun show loopholes. But as the article suggests, the problem is multifaceted. There are layers and layers of issues that must be addressed to help reduce the violence in our country. If the killings occurred with an ax, how simplistic and inadequate the remedy would be if we only sought to ban axes.

    • Steve E

As things get worse, and they will, there will be more killings. You ain’t seen nothing yet.

    • Right Brain Thinker

      Well said, David.

The problem is indeed very complex and multi-layered as you say. Sam is defending preppers here—I wasn’t even aware that preppers were under fire but can understand why Sam is writing this (I will say no more there). It IS a good article in most respects—-I would fault Sam only for his attack on President O’Bama for speaking out. One would expect the President of the USA to speak out on such national tragedies as Sandy and a mass murder of little kids—it is just plain dumb to try to take a political shot at O’Bama in the middle of much other reasonably good commentary. Shame on you , Sam.

Here in VA, I can go to a gun show and buy literally wheelbarrows full of weapons—-as long as I bring wheelbarrows full of money to pay for them. Some of the best deals are found in trunks of cars in the parking lot because those “dealers” have lower overhead—-they don’t have to rent tables inside (and for a few more bucks, some of them will ignore “paperwork”). I can carry a loaded assault rifle into the show slung over my shoulder and no one even checks to see if it is loaded, although a few might look disapprovingly at the inserted magazine. They DO, however have signs at the door that politely ask anyone who is carrying to unload their weapons before entering the show—-no one there to “enforce” that. I assume that similar situations exist in other states with laws like those in VA. And with such “easy access”, no one has ever “shot up” a gun show—-wonder why not? LOL The VA Tech shooter bought his guns legally, one on-line and delivered through a dealer, the other directly through a dealer. Mental health problems he had years before SHOULD have kept him from buying the weapons but that info somehow fell through the cracks. We need to look at MANY things to fix the problem.

      • http://tigrebleau.wordpress.com tigrebleau

“Dumb to take a political shot at Obama”? There was the Master Distracter on-stage exploiting this atrocity to push his gimme-everything budget agenda. Talk about a despicable human being. His website condemned this atrocity while asking for donations to his campaign! Beyond despicable.

      • John

Hey RBT, it is not the weapons that are the problem. It is the drugs they are giving the citizens. Ban Psychiatrists and Psychologists not guns. Go to http://www.ssristories.com/index.php and see the real reason these attacks are occurring.

      • Right Brain Thinker

Yeah, tigrebleau, IMO it was dumb—-didn’t add to the piece at all and made Sam look bad. Just like you look bad wasting your space on the thread to continue the O’Bama attack. If you mean by “on stage”, the news conference, think about why it went the way it did—-the A-Hole reporters asked inappropriate questions and it went down hill from there. BONER is STILL trying to get the world to believe that if bad things happen it will be O’Bama’s fault rather than the idiot Repugnants who have shot themselves so many times in the foot over the debt-deficit question. Boner and the Repugnants are the ones who are “despicable”—-they have been since O’Bama’s election in the way they have held the greater good and the entire country hostage as they try to blackmail their way to getting their way (since they lost the election). Now they’re trying it again when they have thrown away nearly all their cards—-it’s beyond despicable, now—-it’s terminally dumb.

And John says, “Hey RBT, it is not the weapons that are the problem. It is the drugs they are giving the citizens. Ban Psychiatrists and Psychologists not guns. Go to http://www.ssristories.com/index.php and see the real reason these attacks are occurring”

Didn’t we see this on another thread today? Yeah, good thinking, John. Ban doctors and medicine too—-sometimes they screw up. How about airplanes and pilots?—-some of them crash, don’t they?. I love what’s always coming when you see THE REAL REASON that something is occurring—-always entertaining even if almost never true.

(By the way, my neighbor’s brother-in-law works with a guy who knows a Psychiatrist and HE said that the Psychiatrist told him….etc. Lord love a duck)

      • eddie47d

Sure we can blame Retlain and other drugs and in some cases they do more harm than good. The same with semi-automatic weapons and in many cases they do alot of harm. I’m sick of doctors over prescribing and just as sick over the greater demand for more weapons. In both cases you just keep feeding yourself into a stupor!

      • http://personalliberydigest big wyo

[comment has been edited] I have attended at least 70 gun shows and never ounce hkave i seen a out of trunk deal. At every single show every single weapon to be traded or sold is checked to be unloaded and sealed open. So I must only assume the rest is lies also.

      • momo

I doubt Obama is Irish (O’bama).

      • Right Brain Thinker

Hey, [comment has been edited], I have attended at most a half dozen gun shows because I’m not a sick (comment deleted by writer before typing) like you that apparently needs to go to a million gun shows to put hair on his chest. (If you’re a dealer, I will apologize for that remark). I also like to support my local dealers because they’re the guys that are there 24/7 when I need to buy another couple hundred rounds and don’t want to wait for the next show to come to town.

Does “big wyo” mean you’re from Wyoming? Hard to believe Wyoming is looser than VA, but here in VA, you can in fact find folks dealing out of their trunks in the parking lots. You will find people walking in and out of shows with uncased long guns over their shoulders or slung, and with signs on their backs saying what price they want for them. You will find people walking up to them in the aisles and cutting deals. I don’t quite know what you mean by “every single weapon is sealed”, and I didn’t look that closely at the many tens of thousands of guns on display, but I don’t recall trigger locks on all the handguns or anything much at all on the long guns—-although most of them were racked, many were laid out on tables.

As for the lies that you “assume” I’ve told because you’re ignorant, I don’t give a rodent’s behind what you believe—-I know that i walk into shows here behind folks with long guns as described and nobody even looks at them. People walk in with boxed and cased weapons and shopping bags full of handguns and nobody even looks at them. VA is an open carry state and I have seen guys walk by the “unload your weapons” signs as if they weren’t there—-didn’t look to see if the mags were out of their weapons—-didn’t care. Maybe they did it in the parking lot, but I’d bet they didn’t leave the mags in the car.

Virginia used to have a law limiting handgun purchases to one a month. That law has been repealed and now you can buy as many as you can afford and carry. I was NOT kidding about needing a wheelbarrow. You may not have seen the ABC News expose on the “gun show loophole” problem in VA but you can google and find many articles and videos—-go educate yourself—-use ABC News, 20/20, gun shows, and the names below.

ABC’s 20/20 show followed the brother (Omar Samaha) of Virginia Tech shooting victim, Reema Samaha, as he walked into a Virginia gun show and purchased TEN GUNS IN ONE HOUR without a background check. I saw the original video and he carried armfuls of guns out to his car and went back for more. And people who saw him with his arms full of guns and putting them in the ABC News vehicle thought he was one of those “out of the trunk” dealers and actually approached him to deal. AND THEY CAUGHT IT ON CAMERA and put it on national TV. ABC news also did a follow-up story (4/17/10) to Samaha’s gun show purchases on a followup 20/20 show expose of gun shows.

So, get your sorry behind to VA and load up before they close the loopholes. There’s a reason that VA is a source of many of the guns that are “misused” in other places in the country, particularly in the NE where laws are stricter. And we have more “straw men” buying guns here to take them elsewhere than you can find on the yellow brick road with Dorothy unless she had a battalion behind her.

PS One of our most conservative VA state legislators, Delegate Bob Marshall, has just this week introduced legislation here to REQUIRE that someone on the staff be armed in EVERY school in the state. As I said in another comment, I spent a career in education, most of it in administration at the HS level, and have no problem with that—-I would have been first in line to volunteer for my state-issued weapon. Don’t know how it will work out in the elementary schools, though.

A clip from the Political Irony website:

    Thoughts on the Massacre
    Monday, December 17, 2012
Is it my imagination, or do we seem to be having a spate of random and largely unexplained massacres lately?

They are horrible, and I think that there are things we can do to prevent them in the future. But I’m afraid that we are unable or unwilling to have a reasonable conversation about how to go about doing that.

Why? On one side, we have people who claim that school teachers should be armed. Those people are nuts. There is absolutely no evidence that arming everyone would reduce murders. Even school teachers go off the deep end. I know I would if I were confined to a school full of unruly kids every day.

On the other side, you have people who say that strict gun control laws would have prevented this. But the guns used in the Newtown killings were legally purchased, registered, and owned. And they were not real assault weapons. So I’m not sure that is the solution either.

Is there nothing we can do? Hardly. I tend to agree with Roger Ebert, who just repeated something he wrote after the Columbine murders:

Let me tell you a story. The day after Columbine, I was interviewed for the Tom Brokaw news program. The reporter had been assigned a theory and was seeking sound bites to support it. “Wouldn’t you say,” she asked, “that killings like this are influenced by violent movies?” No, I said, I wouldn’t say that. “But what about ‘Basketball Diaries’?” she asked. “Doesn’t that have a scene of a boy walking into a school with a machine gun?”

The obscure 1995 Leonardo Di Caprio movie did indeed have a brief fantasy scene of that nature, I said, but the movie failed at the box office (it grossed only $2.5 million), and it’s unlikely the Columbine killers saw it.

The reporter looked disappointed, so I offered her my theory. “Events like this,” I said, “if they are influenced by anything, are influenced by news programs like your own. When an unbalanced kid walks into a school and starts shooting, it becomes a major media event. Cable news drops ordinary programming and goes around the clock with it. The story is assigned a logo and a theme song; these two kids were packaged as the Trench Coat Mafia. The message is clear to other disturbed kids around the country: If I shoot up my school, I can be famous. The TV will talk about nothing else but me. Experts will try to figure out what I was thinking. The kids and teachers at school will see they shouldn’t have messed with me. I’ll go out in a blaze of glory.”

In short, I said, events like Columbine are influenced far less by violent movies than by CNN, the NBC Nightly News and all the other news media, who glorify the killers in the guise of “explaining” them.

I commended the policy at the Sun-Times, where our editor said the paper would no longer feature school killings on Page 1. The reporter thanked me and turned off the camera. Of course the interview was never used. They found plenty of talking heads to condemn violent movies, and everybody was happy.

I know newspapers want to report the news, but it seems that by doing so they are contributing to the problem. I’m not trying to lessen the horrible nature of this tragedy, but as Juan Cole points out, approximately 176 innocent children have been killed by US drones raining death from the sky. Isn’t this at least as horrible as 20 children in Connecticut killed by an unstable kid? I think we should all ask our local news outlets to stop giving so much publicity to mass murderers.

    • http://tigrebleau.wordpress.com tigrebleau

No evidence that arming teachers reduces school shootings? Baloney. There are no school shootings in Israel. Plenty of evidence.

    • ernest

right brain thinker, we agree with all you said, also the murderer is never blamed.
in big print IT WAS NOT THEIR FAULT.

    • Right Brain Thinker

Why don’t people read and THINK before they run their mouths. Did you guys NOT notice that I didn’t say any of this—that it was a clip from a website and a lot of it quoted Roger Ebert? So you’re not arguing with me and Roger isn’t here. Bringing up Israel proves nothing—-different country, different situation—-here and now in the USA should be the focus.

And as a retired school administrator of 22+ years service who ALWAYS thought I should be able to carry a gun from the day I went on the job in 1970, I have no problem with putting a weapon in someone’s hands in every school. Preferably a policeman or administrator, but a teacher if necessary. During my time in the schools, the only guns I “carried” were the ones I took away from some kid until I could turn them over to the police (and the most notable of those was a fully loaded .44 Magnum Ruger Blackhawk with a 6″ barrel—even the cop that came for it went wide-eyed when I handed it to him). If I didn’t have so many guardian angels sitting on my shoulders, I wouldn’t be here writing this today.

And ernest says, “….we agree with all you said, also the murderer is never blamed.
in big print IT WAS NOT THEIR FAULT.”
I assume this is meant to be some sort of “zinger”? I’d love to talk to you about it, ernest, but I’m not sure what you’re talking about or who you’re “agreeing” with or where the “BIG PRINT” is to be found. Could you be more specific about the point you’re trying to make?

Man, i can sure believe that you no nothing about the TV shows and the Video games Our kids are faced with, Our showing the wars in Afganistan and Iraq Glorifing Our Killing of our so called Enemy.

      • Right Brain Thinker

Again, ranger09, the thing I posted is the comments of the blogger on Political Irony and he is quoting Roger Ebert for much of it. I pretty much agree with most of what THEY said and I agree with you too when you talk about all “the TV shows and the Video games our kids are faced with” and particularly “the way we glorify our Killing of our so called Enemy”. It’s a sad and crazy world we live in—-far different than the one I grew up in.

Too bad media cann’t report facts and truth what the socialist/marxist democrats are doing to destroy the USA. Guns don’t kill people it is the mental nuts running around, thanks to decades of democrats think loons are normal, just another plank of the socialist dems. All who embrace perversted behavior as normal I lived about 19 blacks from Colimbine when it happened, first problem was the belief of parents, that it is just a phase of kids now days, and don’t see what they are doing and how they are wasting idle time. Another beleif of socialist/communist democrats still, even though women abusing Turd Kennedy. Who wanted restrictions on kids from operating gas powered lawn mowers, being a box boy, or doing any thing useful untill 18, by them they all have a work ethics of a snail and problably sired a few illegamate offspring that taxpayer will pay for and pay for. With a studid mind sey of welfare shlubs and free hand outs, since there is a lot of killer cars with mega power better, put power restriction down to 3.5 hp power , why have all that wasted power at your disposable, and cars kill more people than any gun, of course dems don’t want working, self suffient, and a citizenary that can defend themselves, shades of dictators and Asian mind sat.

This act of murder as deeply troubling as it is, is so totally misunderstood that I can see it happening again and soon because people insist on only seeing the part they feel strongest about rather than the entire picture. Adam was also a victim, not some horrible EVIL monster. His mother knew he was deeply sick and still she taught him the tools he used to try to end his pain. He suffered from issues that are becoming more and more common in society today and unless we address it this will happen again. But everyone seems to jump on the gun cart and miss the mental illness train. Adam was not trying to get fame. He was a very scared young man that did a desperate act that we as sane people cannot conprehend. He did it out of deep feelings that had no foundation if fact. We see people like this everyday in varying degrees and we just walk by and do nothing. Obama himself does this very thing in going around pointing out how horrible this country is and he is trying to change it to fit his twisted view of what it should be so it will be “fair”. He was even able to sit and watch as Americans were murdered by the enemy in Benghazi and tell those that could have helped to stand down because he saw it serving his agenda. It is the twisted thinking that is the problem, not the weapons used by them to try to make things “right” in their warped eyes.

Pity is indeed an ugly emotion. In this case empathy is more frightening, but you seem to be suggesting that we all engage in just a bit of it?

  • quillerm

White House chastises reporters for not following the script they were provided on news stories. Obama is so confident that the media will push his agenda and cover for his failures that he is providing them propaganda for distribution. Destroying the NRA is a goal of the Democrat Party. Blaming the NRA for all gun crimes is sleazy and irresponsible but our leftist media is up to the task. As long as leaders of organizations like the Black Panthers can advocate the murder of innocent people because of race. Leftists on the internet are advocating the murder or imprisonment of people with other political views. As long as these extremists are out there, people will want to protect themselves.

Preppers are the ones you didn’t see on TV after Hurricane Sandy, wondering when the government was going to provide them with food and water.

    • Right Brain Thinker

“Preppers are the ones you didn’t see on TV after Hurricane Sandy, wondering when the government was going to provide them with food and water”.

Really? You mean they had their “stuff” stashed away somehow so that it didn’t blow away and wash away with their houses, cars, and boats? Or burn like they did in the Rockaways? Like buried in their backyards maybe? (I hope they could even find their backyards and then a shovel to dig with).

What’s with the “negative waves”? I was serious (and maybe a bit put out because I don’t know the “secrets”). Would someone please tell me how “preppers” deal with floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, earthquakes, wildfires, etc. that obliterate their property (and, presumably, their “stashes”)?. I’m from NJ and spent my childhood in a lot of the places that Sandy scoured out—-they’re just GONE down to two feet and more deep and I’m really wondering how you “prep” for that. Do you load up a wagon and pull it behind you when you evacuate? Strap it on your back? What?

The Media works for the Govt Powers to Be, They no longer stand for TRUTH To the Public, Its all about The money people. I remember an incident when the Govt gave a written report about the Incident to reporters, And stated that this is the only thing you will report, An you will report nothing unless it comes from us. Also you will not Interview People about this case, If you do you will be put in Jail. Other People came forward with information but the reporters failed to report anything they had to say. Well it is good Job Protection, But has nothing to do with the Truth.

The guilty object here is drugs, specifically the mind altering strong psychoactive drugs like Prozac; it is not guns. Since we became colonies Americans have owned guns. The tragic recent shootings all have a common denominator. Each and everyone of the shooters in malls, restaurants and schools have a histroy with being prescribed strong psychoactive drugs like Prozac. Prior to the introduction of this class of drugs we didn’t have these mass shootings. The media and the government do not want to examine this link because it does not advance their agenda for gun control.

    • Jon

I must disagree. Drug use and abuse is not the problem, anymore than prepping, rampant birth of bastards, overloaded jails, or gun ownership are. They are merely symptoms of a sick society. With the sanction and assistance of the government, the courts, the media, the education industry, and each of us, we have raised multiple generations of people with no moral compass, no sense of responsibility, no ambition, and, more recently, no hope. Why should we be surprised that evil is becoming more triumphant? And we can only expect things to become much worse until we all have the sensibility and courage to deal with the disease confronting us, and not waste effort on the symptoms.

It is time we quit paying Psychiatrists huge salaries for inadequate patient maintenance with absolutely no cures for chronic mental illness. Chronic mental illness has a disease pathology that does not just reside in or originate in the head. The pathology of the disease affects the brain through chemical imbalances. While prayer can be used for cure of psychopathic or sociopathic tendencies where no disease pathology is present, it would be very difficult to cure mental illness only with prayer or counseling where a chronic disease pathology is the cause. Allopathic Medicine has no cure for mental or any other chronic disease. That is the problem. Ancient Natural and Alternative Medicine had cures for chronic disease; however, treatment of chronic disease starts with expert diagnosis and ability to evaluate treatments. Allopathic Physicians have no diagnostic techniques, relying exclusively on limited laboratory tests and only on patient statements for psychiatric diagnosis. Pretending to handle the problem of mental illness is not going to get the job done no matter how much more money is put into the mental health system. Nothing will be done to change the outcome for those suffering from mental illness or destruction of their victims because Psychiatrists do not have the skills to solve the problem. When an Allopathic Physician is presented with a cure for chronic disease, one receives a blank stare. These physicians take their orders from the pharmaceutical companies. In order to solve our societal problem, the solution below needs to be implemented to end chronic disease not only for sufferers of mental disorders and their victimization of others, but for all chronic disorders.
Natural and Alternative Medicine uses 3 diagnostic techniques very successfully: Those techniques are Iridology, Kinesiology (Saliva DNA Testing), and either Expert Oriental or Ayurvedic Pulse Diagnosis. Iridology is accomplished via a camera linked to a computer. Kinesiology (Saliva DNA Testing) can even be done from a distance by mailing DNA swabbed cotton balls to a physician experienced in the art. Expert Pulse Diagnosis can either be Oriental or Indian Ayurvedic. Expert Pulse Diagnosis takes the most time to learn, but is absolutely necessary for any physician who wants to diagnose chronic disease or assess a patient’s status and the efficacy of treatments. A combination of these diagnostic techniques gives cross-verification to the physician. And, the first 2, Iridology and Kinesiology (Saliva DNA Testing), will aid the physician’s diagnosis, until he is expert in Oriental Pulse Diagnosis. (Distance pulse diagnosis can be accomplished via a lock of hair by keying in on [DNA], just as can be done in Kinesiology Saliva Testing with a swabbed cotton ball.) Allopathic Physicians face severe incompetence in every area besides the Operating Room and treatment of infection, demonstrating a Dark Age lack of knowledge. Many people believe this ineptitude is due to a stranglehold on Allopathic Medicine by the pharmaceutical industry, but this problem is also due to ingrained arrogance and incompetence on the part of Allopathic Psychiatrists. The State of Texas refusal to accept a mental health diagnosis from anyone other than an Allopathic Psychiatrist bears witness to entrenched ignorance on the part of state regulators regarding the competence of psychiatrists to diagnose.
Federal Government involvement in Medicine and Medical R & D is also a major factor in the lack of cures for chronic disease. There is too much money available from the Federal Government, so the status quo is reinforced instead of competent cost-effective treatment developing to meet medical needs. Necessity is the mother of invention only when the Federal Government isn’t in the driver’s seat handing out the dough.
A step by step solution to the problem: Allopathic Physicians first need to learn Natural and Alternative Medical diagnostic techniques. Second, all of the old ancient medical formulas and techniques need to be researched. It is impossible to research efficacy of treatments without expert diagnostic techniques for value assessment on patients. I use an almost completely unknown acupuncture protocol (self-administered much like a diabetic gives himself insulin injections) that treats many chronic diseases, as well as other little known medical knowledge for the majority of my health care needs. I use this acupuncture protocol now only for health maintenance. Friends are now asking me to share my medical knowledge because there is no treatment available for chronic disease. Chronic disease treatment is “Do it yourself healthcare, or do without because Allopathic Medicine provides absolutely “NO” cures.”
The major solution to high health care costs and successful treatment of mental disorders is for states to mandate medical schools to teach expert diagnostic techniques to first year medical students. If students are lacking in proficiency in expert diagnostic techniques at the end of the first year of medical school, they need to be washed out of the program. We can eliminate the majority of the expense and failure in our medical system by insisting our states get tough on the way physicians are trained.
Congress and State Legislatures can get Dr. Vassant Lad of Albuquerque, NM and, or other pulse diagnosticians to give demonstrations in Washington and the various state legislatures by diagnosing Congressmen while they are sitting in their seats in Congress. Dr. Lad or other expert pulse diagnosticians could rapidly perform a blind study for a state legislature on an acupuncture treatment protocol that I have in my possession that cures chronic mental disease as well as other chronic diseases. All that would be required is for Dr. Lad to take the pulse of patients before and after the acupuncture treatment, in order to prove that a profound change occurs when the treatment is administered. This acupuncture protocol can be acquired by contacting me: anncgm1@gmail.com
House members can send a saliva sample to Healthy Bodies in Wills Point, TX to be diagnosed and receive treatment, in order to test the efficacy of this diagnostic method. Congress or a state legislature can invite an iridologist into the state legislature to diagnose everyone sitting in a House seat. Since these diagnostic methods can be demonstrated, our Allopathic Medical Establishment can make no excuses for current inept and expensive medical diagnosis and thoroughly inadequate palliative care.
Psychiatry has not progressed beyond its infancy, and it will only progress when the public insists on competent diagnostic techniques. We have the ability to make our state and federal governments give us better health care, so let’s do it. There is no excuse for mass murders. Even with extensive training time for physicians and long times for treatment, our society could be well on its way to freedom from chronic disease within 15 years, if we insist on implementation of expert pulse diagnosis. Without expert pulse diagnosis, no Allopathic Physician will implement any of the Natural or Alternative treatments that surface because he has no ability to easily discern the value. That means we are stuck, until we change the system.

WoW….Obama and his henchmen in Washington remind me alot of the police,DEA,FBI,ATF&B,ICE….they want to blame someone or something right now right here, instead of facts and investigating and leg work the right way,it’s all about lets just pin it on this and move on to the next thing….they don’t want to have to actualy work at it to get it right!lets pin not only this on them(most time is wtrong)but lets wrap these other things up by pinning these on them/him/her too!and they all agree with that and move forward with it,and even pick more crap up along the way,all based on wrong assumptions and alligations!this is excatly how this is proceeding along,at Obama’s thinking and speed!….remember..the quiker they can pin it on someone and bury it the less media coverage and scrutiny it get’s!..”.Lets just get this under the rug fella’s!”.

All our children are (more) important as the president. So the main defense against armed madmen wanting to do him harm is armed gaurds, not “no firearms allowed” decals or signs. Aren’t our children worth (deserving) the same level of security? What good can come from disarming the lawabiding good guys?

There’s allways a call for gun control when the time is ripe, or nuclear arms control, when that time is ripe, or control of chemical weapons: -Control!, control,! control.!
Only control you never hear of is, “EVIL CONTROL!:”
If there was a “marxist, socialist, liberal control, Oh! What a wonderful world this would be!”
The left loves all kinds of controls, but you ever notice how much they love, “ABORTIONS?”
Decent people call abortions, “MURDER!” GOD calls it, “GENOCIDE!” and the left call it, “THE RIGHT TO CHOOSE!”
Hipocracy by any other name is, _______________________You fill in the blanks..

  • Motov

That NY guy killed his grandmother using a hammer,……Better make tough laws on hammers! He also set fires to seven houses,….better make really tough laws against bic lighters! That’s how insane those anti gun people are!
They say if we had these laws, the gun problem will be solved, and they totally miss the boat!
Those laws only disarm the law abiding people and never the criminal, who by definition is self explanatory. They never go to the root of the problem. Like why do criminals commit crimes in the first place? Could the answer be they would be reminded of their own criminal motives? So they turn on inanimate objects that they seem to have some mysterious power, that somehow gets into these killer’s minds, and they go on a rampage?

I can easily make effective weapons from common objects, gun or no gun, people kill people,…. not the instrument of death they choose.
