Marine Guards Testify Manning Respectful, Compliant Prior To Base Protest

Pfc. Bradley Manning faces life in prison.

A Marine guard testifying in a pretrial hearing for alleged WikiLeaks leaker Pfc. Bradley Manning undercut the government’s contention that Manning’s confinement in isolation — sometimes without clothing — was justified because he was a suicide risk.

Marine Corps Lance Cpl. Jonathan Cline, testifying as a prosecution witness, told the court that Manning was always respectful and compliant prior to an incident on Jan. 18, 2011 in which Manning hid behind an exercise machine and wept after being scolded by a guard for failing to properly respond to a command. Another former guard, Marine Lance Cpl. Joshua Tankersly, echoed Cline’s testimony regarding Manning’s behavior.

According to Cline, some brig workers were annoyed that a pro-Manning protest the previous day had closed Quantico’s main gate, forcing them to take alternate routes home. Manning had previously testified that on Jan. 18, guards seemed angry with him as they escorted him — in leg irons and handcuffs — to an exercise room. He said the guards’ behavior made him nervous. There was eventually what Manning described as a heated argument between Manning and a guard that left Manning cowering behind the exercise machine. It was later that day that brig commander Chief Warrant Officer 4 James Averhart added “suicide risk” to Manning’s maximum-custody conditions.

“I thought I was going to be attacked or assaulted or something like that,” Manning said.

Former brig worker Marine Corps Gunnery Sgt. William Fuller testified that Manning was often uncommunicative and withdrawn, possibly signaling a suicide risk.

Manning, an intelligence analyst in Baghdad in 2009 and 2010, is charged with 22 offenses, including aiding the enemy and violating Federal espionage and computer security laws, and faces life in prison. He is thought to be the source of a series of leaks to the Website WikiLeaks that included a video of U.S. Apache helicopter pilots firing on Iraqi civilians and journalists.

He recently offered to admit to willfully sending a battlefield video file, some classified memos, more than 20 Iraq war logs, more than 20 Afghanistan war logs and other classified materials to WikiLeaks and wrongfully storing classified information in exchange for a lenient sentence. The government  has not said whether it would accept the plea.

Manning’s attorneys claim the nine months Manning spent in virtual isolation amounted to illegal pretrial punishment and are seeking to have all charges against him dismissed.

Your Right ! The ones that should be in the lockup are the A- Holes flying the Apache , I have seen the video and heard them they thought it was a big joke .

    • sam1966

I hope that he is found guilty for his crimes and given the proper punishment. FOR GOD AND COUNTRY! 하나님하고 나라를 위해서!

You need both love of country and faith in God to be a patriot.

9-months in the Brig is more than enough punishment….he would have been better off at Leavenworth where he wouldn’t have been so available to abuse.

  • Jimmy the Greek

WE need more people like him exposing what is really going on , this volunteer military is not good because the only people they are getting now are the ones that are not smart enough to make it in the world . we need to bring back the draft , these people it the military would shoot Americans if they were told to , the people in the sixties and early 70s would have shot the ones giving the orders , or fraged them when they went to take a crap .

    • Jim S

It is obvious Jimmy that you have no clue what you are talking about and are just making things up to see your name in print. Today’s military is made up of the best and brightest, not some moron hiding behind a keyboard somewhere. I’m retired military and joined right after the draft was halted. I was also a recruiter shortly after Vietnam and know the standards for enlistment. They were tough then and even tougher now. I have a Master’s degree and probably make more in the civilian world than you. I continue to work closely with active duty and veterans, so I know the type of people that make up today’s military. So before you go running your mouth from inside your rectal cavity you should learn more about your subject. Maybe then you wouldn’t show the world you are a complete idiot.

      • Jimmy the Greek

Well jim i bet you do every thing you are told to do without thinking . you are the kind that pick up our guns and turn on your people if that were your orders . Like what happened in New Orleans . you are the kind that can’t think for your self . you would make a good cop !

ABUSE???? You want to call what is going on to this PoS Abuse? Abuse would be the Fact that he gave Classified info to a 3rd party. And in doing so but other People in Danger! He should have Been Shot on the First Day as the traitor that he is! Screw him!
He gave up ALL of his right’s when he did these act’s!

    • Boris

So you must feel the same way about the traitor in the White House. B.O. has done much worse…

    • Vigilant

John, I agree with you, though perhaps not in such colorful terms.

Civil libertarians on both right and left fail to grasp the necessity for laws preventing the dissemination of classified secrets of the USG and armed forces.

They also need to come to terms with the fact that the First Amendment does NOT protect free speech without qualifications and reservations. It is a categorical, not a generic right.

Bradley may be perceived as a martyr by some; one must wonder whether they would have supported Julius and Ethel Rosenberg, the Pollards and Robert Hanssen.

Bradley broke the laws that came with the territory when he joined the service. He was aware of the consequences, and now he will suffer them. There is NO excuse for what he did.

      • Jimmy the Greek

The Rosenberg’s and Pollard ,and Hanssen were all jews ! Are you starting to see a pattern ?

      • OneGuess

Jimmy the Geek, here you are again with your antisemitic bs. Boring.

      • Vigilant

“The Rosenberg’s and Pollard, and Hanssen were all jews [sic] ! Are you starting to see a pattern ?”

Hanssen was not Jewish. The only pattern detectable is your penchant for making bigoted remarks.

If he was a muslim, he would have already been released.

    • Mark

I just heard this morning that the Army Doctor who shot all those solders in Texas was being forcibly shaved because growing a beard is against Army regulations. He’s still confined and still undergoing military proceedings . . .Oh, and he’s a Muslim.

      • OneGuess

You heard wrong. The judge in charge has been dropped off the case & nidal’s beard has not been shaved.

  • Chester

To you people, Jimmie the Greek in particular, the only people who got fragged in nam were the A**HOLES like you who gave orders that got others killed, or simply refused to believe what they were told by the grunts on the ground. Good thing you weren’t some applecheek second luie then, or you would have died as a result of friendly fire, probably listed as mortar attack on your position.

    • Jimmy the Greek

Tell that to Jim S HE is more in line with what you sead .

      • OneGuess

No, J the Geek. It is for YOU.

  • Mark

I’ve always been curious as to why such a junior person was put in a position of handling these documents. From the various things I’ve read, he seemed to be on the edge. Perhaps the Army didn’t do sufficient screening/monitoring. After all, he didn’t send it to our enemies per se, but released it to an organization that appears to want to expose all secrets, no matter whose they might be.Manning has suffered, and will continue to suffer. I don’t think his motives were evil though.

    • Jimmy the Greek

They take anyone that can pass a drug test and finished high school , hell they even let illegal aliens in the us military , and now the queers and lesbo’s are getting in .

      • Average Joe

        Biggot much?
