A Marine Corps sergeant who criticized Dear Leader Barack Obama has earned himself an other-than-honorable discharge.

Gary Stein is the U.S. Marine sergeant whose Facebook group, Armed Forces Tea Party, was in the news last month because remarks on the page were found to be “contemptuous.”

The nine-year Marine veteran said he started the page to encourage fellow service members to exercise their free speech rights. Stein was first cautioned by his superiors at Camp Pendleton in 2010, after he launched the Facebook page and criticized Obama’s healthcare overhaul. He volunteered to take down the page while he reviewed the rules at the request of his superiors. Upon determining that he was not in violation of the rules, Stein re-launched the page.

“I love the Marine Corps, I love my job. I wish it wouldn’t have gone this way. I’m having a hard time seeing how 15 words on Facebook could have ruined my nine-year career,” he told The Associated Press.

The Marines say Stein failed to follow Pentagon directives that say military personnel in uniform cannot sponsor a political club; participate in any TV or radio program or group discussion that advocates for or against a political party, candidate or cause; or speak at any event promoting a political movement. Officers also are not allowed to use contemptuous words against senior officials, including the defense secretary or the President.

This is the third time PLD has aired this. Why are you belaboring it?

    • Raggs

Maybe it just goes to show that the oblama machine detroys anyone in its path….

      • truesoy

Raggs, if you are going to defend Mr. Stein actions, you are jus as ignorant as he pretended to be about military law.
Look up the UCMJ (Uniform Code of Military Justice) and read it.
Mr. Stein should consider himself lucky not to be sitting in prison. Maybe President Obama is too soft, who knows?

    • Libertytrain

could it be vigilant – an update on the story – the discharge?

      • Sirian

True Libertytrain, this is merely an update. A discharge had been expected but not under an “Other than Honorable”. I had expected a probable “General” but not the other. That is two steps above a “Dishonorable”. Perhaps a bit more than necessary but that can be appealed in the future and possibly reinstated to a lesser level. This article is merely an update to the end of this particular story.

      • Vigilant

        LibertyTrain and Sirian, you’re right.

Sirian, I too was surpirised at the OTH discharge. It’s defined as follows at

“A judgment of OTH discharge occurs when a military member is in trouble with the civilian court system, for reasons like a felony conviction leading to imprisonment. OTH is the most severe of the administrative discharges because people with OTH are banned from ever reenlisting into the army or any other part of the Armed Forces. OTH recipients do not receive VA healthcare or most benefits provided through the VA.”

I know of no evidence that he was ” in trouble with the civilian court system” so it seems a bit harsh.

Several things the article should have mention but it didn’t, all in the customary partisan republican/conservative mantra..
First, it is not a violationof a Pentagon ‘directive’ he is guilty of violating. He is guilty of violation of the articles of the UCMJ; and he knew it, or should have known after 9 years of military service.
Second, while the military fights and defends our nation and our Constitution, it does not enjoy things like the 1st amenedment right as the rest of the nation; the military is limited on that because of the nature of the military structure and the need to msaintain discipline. The military is not a democracy, and it is apolitical, otherwise it wouldn’t be the U.S. military, and instead would be the Hondura’s, or any other country’s army south of the border.
Now, he could always leave the military and say anything he wants from then on, and he is free to do so especially now that he is no longer in uniform, misguided as he might be in his beliefs.
Third, it is kind of hypocritical for Mr. Stein to criticize President Obama’s healthcare reform after 9 years of enjoying the benefits of socialized medicine in the military, yes, the military medical system is as close to socialized medicine as you can get, and in housing, too, has echoes of socialism.
Ps.- Obama was elected on a platform of ‘healthcare reform’, therefore it is only logical to assume that the majority of americans wanted healthcare reform, although most wanted universal healthcare).
He is lucky he is just being bootedt out, because at any other time he would have gone before a Court Martial.
There is a lot more to what actually happened than meet the eye, and for obvious reason Mr. Livingston skipped around some facts. It had otherwise neutered the intended impact of his message.

    • truesoy

Ps.- CORRECTION: In my response I mistakenly attributed this article to Mr. Livingston instead of Sam Rolley, the author.

    • Vigilant

Much of what you say is true, but I have to respond to a couple of your points.

When you say, “…it is kind of hypocritical for Mr. Stein to criticize President Obama’s healthcare reform after 9 years of enjoying the benefits of socialized medicine in the military,” there is no hypocrisy whatsoever. The centralized character of the military medical system is absolutely crucial to the preparedness of the military. Would you expect those injured or sick in Afghanistan to be forced to go to Afghani doctors?

Moreover, it’s crass of you to draw an analogy between Obamacare and the military medical system. When the American public at large is willing to write a blank check to his/her country, cashable up to and including death, then we might have something to talk about, but not until then. The US military forces are provided benefits as both incentives to join, and to head off the financial worries and problems that would occur on their depressed pay scale in the civilian medical system.

As for your statement that “although most [Americans] wanted universal healthcare,” you’d best rethink that and check on the polls that have consistently characterized the public as opposed to it.
