NEWPORT NEWS, Va., Aug. 20 (UPI) — A Virginia man was being held in South Carolina Saturday, suspected of killing his wife and three children, authorities said.
The quadruple slayings were discovered Friday at a Newport News apartment, and the suspect, John Moses Ragin, 36, was being held in Manning, S.C., the Newport News Daily Press reported.
Newport News police officer Harold Eley told the newspaper police had issued warrants charging Ragin with killing his wife Crystal Ragin, 32, Sierra Ragin, 15, Rasheed Ragin, 10, and Lakwan Ragin, 6. Another child was unharmed,
Eley said Ragin could be extradited back to Virginia this coming week.
The victims were found after someone reported smelling smoke at the apartment and a maintenance worker went to check it out. Eley said it appeared they had been stabbed and exposed to fire. Autopsies were to be conducted to determine the cause of death.
Eley said Ragin called police about 2:30 a.m. Saturday to say he was in Manning and that he had dropped off his 5-year-old son unharmed at a relative’s home in South Carolina.
Eley said although all the children have Ragin’s last name, the 5-year-old was the couple’s only biological child.
The Press said Ragin is on probation for a 1991 voluntary manslaughter conviction in Clarendon County, S.C.
The family had moved into the Newport News apartment only a few months ago.
