Majority Of Americans Oppose Measure That Requires People To Purchase Health Insurance

December 29, 2010 by

Majority of Americans oppose measure that requires people to purchase health insuranceA new CNN/Opinion Research Corporation survey reveals that a majority of Americans are opposed to the healthcare law that requires all citizens to buy insurance.

The poll, which was released on Dec. 27, shows that about 60 percent of respondents oppose the provision of Obamacare that requires Americans to purchase health insurance or face fines. CNN polling director Keating Holland said that women are more likely than men to support the provision, but a majority of females — 53 percent — still said they were opposed to the health insurance requirement, which is scheduled to go into effect in 2014.

Other provisions of the law, which was signed by President Barack Obama this past March, were more popular. Approximately six in 10 said they were in favor of the measure that prevents insurance companies from dropping coverage for people who become seriously ill. About 64 percent said they are in favor of the provision that prohibits insurance providers from denying coverage for individuals who have pre-existing conditions.

According to The Hill, Republican lawmakers are considering holding a vote to repeal Obamacare early in 2011. Beginning in January, the GOP will hold a majority in the House of Representatives and gain several seats in the Senate.

In a letter addressed to Republican leaders earlier this month, Tea Party group Freedom Works supported a repeal, arguing that three-fifths of states have already challenged the law.

People should never forget that real health depends how well you take care of yourself and not what health insurance you carry but I agree health insurance is important for every one. Search “Wise Health Insurance” online for dollar a day insurance plans.

The Government should not be in the position to both mandate a purchase and fine you if you don’t.
I do not believe the Government has the right to ‘sell’ you anything at any level of Government. Absolute power corrupts absolutely.

    • newspooner

You are correct. Such a system is immoral and unconstitutional. It is called communism.

    • Teresa

      You are very correct.
unlawfully interfered with the economic rights of the People by imposing unreasonable impairments in the fulfillment of their intended contractual obligations, and their ability to enter into such contracts, and attempting to change our fundamental economic system, where there is no significant or legitimate public purpose to do so.
In doing this, Barack Hussein Obama has undermined the integrity of his office, has brought disrepute on the Presidency, has betrayed his trust as President, and has acted in a manner subversive of the rule of law and justice, to the manifest injury of the people of the United States.

      • kate8

        Very well said, Teresa.

    • Norm

      charles
Just look at it as a tax on people who have been riding on other peoples insurance policies.
For those who already have ins. nothing changes, in fact their premiums should eventially go down(or not rise so fast).

      • Teresa

wrong, my insurance prem. just went from 21.00 a wk. for me and my daughter to 70.00 a wk. I only bring home around 20,000. a yr. and I get no gov. assistance or child support. Tell me again how the premiums went or are going down!

        • Norm

          Teresa
For starters the law doesn’t fully go into effect until 2013.
Next. yout premiums and mine would probably gone up even more.

          • Teresa

Are you a government employee Norm?

          • Claire

My husband and I have supplement insurance. His premium has been increased at least twice a year since he has had it–since 2002. I acquired my supplement in 2006–same thing, an increase in premiums twice a year. And I have never used my supplement. The cost of health insurance has been rising steadily for a number of years. The cost of medical and doctors’ care also rose steadily. This did not happen overnight.
I have not read the entire Health Reform Bill. Has anyone read it in its entirety? And I mean really read it? I admit that haven’t.
This administration was hellbent in passing health reform. And I figured they would get the bill passed (come hell or high water). The public option should have been included but they opted to take what they could get. This would have given people the choice to have or have not. However, from what I gather, the Republicans did not want it included. So we have ended up with another fiasco to deal with. Doctors, hospitals, pharmas all want to make as much money as they can as fast as they can. Their prices have been going up and up for years. All of my insurance has risen steadily, car, home etc. And I haven’t had any wrecks, tickets, or DUIs. I haven’t added anything to my home but insurance keeps going up. I won’t bitch about my taxes, the cost of homes and taxes here in Springfield are fairly reasonable.
To me, all of this boils down to greed, pure and simple. Unadulterated greed. I look back at all that has happened within the past 30-50 years–greed is the problem, it always has been.

          • Claire

            “I admit that I haven’t”

          • Claire

I also wish to add that I do not approve of being fined if I don’t have health insurance. In contrast, if a person does not have insurance then the taxpayer has to pick up the tab.

          • http://?? Joe H.

            claire,
It’s one thing having to make up for AMERICAN citizens (for the PC police, see United States citizens) but it’s a whole nother’ thing to have to pick up the tab for non-citizens of Mexico and every other country whose offage can drag their tired asses over the border!!!

          • Claire

JoeH– I agree with you. I do not like the thought of having to pay for the illegals. We already have been and enough is enough. Take care of America/Americans first. It will be interesting to see what happens next year concerning the illegals. Nothing is being done so far.

    • Jack

Intrusion. Try this. GM (Government Motors). They took it over. The exes got their bonuses. The unions kept their jobs and 1100 dealershios colsed with 150,000 people unemployed. What’s to say that they demand that you buy a Chevy Volt and if you don’t you will be fined and penalized. Watch for that IRS agent to show up at your door because you didn’t by health insurance.

  • Bus

Of course they like what appears to be the freebies. But if insurance companies are forced to accept everyone then you can expect rates to skyrocket. Then people will opt for the government plan and the socialists win. Obama and his gang are trying to force free enterprise companies to act in a socialist way, in so doing they will end up driving them out of business, but it won’t look like what’s happening in Venezuela.

  • Doc Sarvis

I see that provision as personal responsibility. Currently those who need health care but can not afford it and do not have insurance pass the bill on to the rest of us – even if indirectly through our higher premiums. If everyone could get affordable health care, which is the plan, all insurance rates should moderate.

    • 45caliber

And where does it say in the Constitution that we need laws to require personal responsibility??

    • Teresa

Doc, if this plan is so great, why is Congress void from it and allowing Obamas Union pals exempt from it? And have you done any research on Medicare supplement plans, why they support it so much?

    • Teresa

Our personal responsibility here is our Constitution and our freedom Doc, that is what is at stake, you seem to forget that.

      • http://naver samurai

You are correct, fellow patriot. Doc just doesn’t know what our founding principles are. Self reliance, personal responsibility, and the vision to ensure that government remains our servants and not our masters. Smaller government means more freedom for the people. Last week the FDA revoked its regulatory approval of the drug AVASTIN to treat late stage metastatic breast cancer. Each year, practicing oncologists chosen by 17, 500 American women to save them from their life-threatening, heavily progressed cancer prescribe AVASTIN to treat them.
The FDA explained that it was revoking approval of the drug for that use because it decided that the drug does not provide a “sufficient benefit in slowing disease progression to outweigh the significant risk to patients.” Risk? The drug is prescribed for women who are otherwise going to die from cancer unless the drug saves them at least for a time. The far greater risk to these women is the FDA and not the drug. The drug is also NOT COVERED by Obama bin Laden care. Sounds like Obama bun Laden is already getting started by the killing of sick women.

Thanks for supporting something that takes away women’s right to live, moron! FOR GOD AND COUNTRY!

        • http://?? Joe H.

          samurai,
though it isn’t known to all, men too get breast cancer. I wonder how fast nobummer would reinstate the drug if HE had endstage breast cancer!!! not saying it will happen but God knows who is corrupt!!!

          • http://naver samurai

He would probably respond with a very quick answer. Keep up the good fight, fellow patriot! FOR GOD AND COUNTRY!

  • Vigilant

So there you have it. 40% of the Americans surveyed believe it’s OK to break the law of the land, the Constitution, to force citizens to purchase a commercial product. That means 40% are either completely ignorant of the Constitution, or don’t have a respect for the rule of law, or both. Pitiful!

    40% don’t pay taxes either.

    • Doc Sarvis

You’re telling me that 40% of people who buy goods and services don’t pay taxes on those goods and services? How’s that?

      • Teresa

Obama said it was not a tax remember. He contridicted himself.

      • BB

47% of the populace pay no federal income tax! How is that fair to the rest of us???

      • john

No Doc they don’t pay income tax!

      • http://naver samurai

It’s a gross violation of the Commerce Clause of the U.S. Constitution, doc. I think you need to study a little more before you post you lib remarks on this post, moron! FOR GOD AND COUNTRY!

        • http://?? Joe H.

          Doc,

          • http://naver samurai

Thank you Kate8! Keep up the good fight, fellow patriot! You’re right, I’m a lucky man. I’ve been lucky and married to my good wife for 25 years. I’ve never looked back. FOR GOD AND COUNTRY!

  • 45caliber

I oppose the part that requires me to pay for others to enjoy free medical attention so they don’t have to pay anything while I pay for my own insurance and the supplimental costs as well.

  • Norm

Why buy insurance when someone else’s policy and/or Medicaid will pay your way?
The good thing about mandatory insurance is that freebooters, many who can well afford insurance, will ante into the pot.
The other “fair” alternative is to deny medical help to the uninsured and people who can’t afford to pay.
    Cold!

    • ValDM

When did it become MY problem? 50 years ago, not many people had health insurance; they PAID out of their own pockets for services delivered. It should still be the same. Our premiums have certainly gone up, and with reduced coverage. And this is good, how? I’m penalized because someone else wants what I have? Well, then they can go out and earn it, because health insurance IS NOT A RIGHT.

      • kate8

How is it that we’ve come to accept that the outrageous cost of medical care is normal and okay?

I’d also like to know how many of the elite are invested in insurance companies. Most of them, I’d say, judging from what happened with AIG. They are the ones who stand to benefit from this.

Perhaps a more sane approach to health would be a better solution?

Also, some (besides the elite) are exempt from this, like the Muslims, Amish, uinions, etc. Well, I do not believe in allopathic medicine at all, yet I am not exempt. Whatever happened to equal protection?

      • Norm

        ValDM
Fifty years ago medicine was much cruder than it is today.
People are living longer now due to far more and better equipment, new drugs, and many more procedures that just didn’t exist.
        This is all very expensive.

        • http://naver samurai

Have them get off of their backsides and get a job, then they can afford to pay for it. This program is unconstitutional and will be overturned by the SCOTUS next year. Wait and see! FOR GOD AND COUNTRY!

          • Norm

            samurai
This program will never go away.
My hope is that it will be modified to to make it more sensible and to limit rhe profiteering by the insurance companies.

          • http://naver samurai

Well then Norm, how about enacting legislation dealing with the insurance companies? This would be a better solution to the problem and not unconstitutional handouts. I don’t believe in my tax dollars going to people that are too lazy to work. Remember Norm, self reliance, personal responsibility, and the vision to ensure that government remains our servants and not our masters (smaller government). This program also goes against the Commerce Clause of the Constitution and many things dealing with it are nothing more than new taxes on the people. Wake up, Norm! The days of handouts are slowly comming to an end. FOR GOD AND COUNTRY!

kate8, jopa(just a pimheaded ahole), this organism is a Marxist Communist Union Democrat Socialist Party faithful idoit at best. They will never admit that they are willing to do what ever their money man Soro,s and his head always vacationing marxist muslim moron are doing to destroy the USA. There are always mental midgets in the MCUDSP have never seen the folley of the socialist mind set. Just a few prime examples of EU socialist admires in the party over the decades, Wilson, FDR, McGovern, the first Sec of Ag, most of Holleyweird, mostly all college professors and consequencely their mush brained students, and definitely all union jackassed memeber. The (healthcare) bill is a government totalitarian controlling organism that culiminates the decades of the MCUDSP meddling in healthcare. Since it plans to metesatized itself on everyone and every business. The track record for anyprogram the federal government ever creates cost 3-4 times more than is projected. Before medicare, it only took 1 person to handle paper work for 3 doctors, a year after medicare it took 1 person per doctor, by the 80′s it was 2 people per doctor, now it is 3 plus some part time help. Who do the whiners of rising medical costs need to thank for the f–king socialist mess? The MCUDSP and the decades of freaks like Wilson, FDR, McGovern, the first Sec of Ag, all the radical domestic radical idoits. Also in any democrat presidents ideology and their inner circle, and especially Onumnutts and his inner circle, including the Nazi Traitor Socialist Soros. Every democrap idoit that comments on how wonderful this healthcare bill is, are either unabler to read, understand English, don’t pay attention to history or else beleive all the sewage the party of wealth distrubition and welfare for everyone, is the limited mental mind set of socialists.

  • Bill Ware

I’ve always said the Health Care Bill was not about Health Care but more about how our Government could get their hands on really Big Money. It has also been projected by the Budget Forecast people that their is no way the US can sustain this health care cost at any level. So, that can only lead one to believe that this is about the money not health care.

  • spiffpeteres

My health insurance premium is more than my mortgage. Used to be that ones house was considered your biggest purchase. It wasn’t always this way. Twelve years ago premiums were half or less than what they are today.

For those that say let the free market fix health care, next time you need emergency health care open the yellow pages and find the least expensive provider. If you get cancer, do your due diligence and shop for the best doctor you can afford. If your spouse, parent or child becomes ill with a incurable or terminal condition, the honorable thing to do is cutoff any and all medical support. Why waste good money on someone that will die sooner than later? Doesn’t make sense to burden the system with patients that are terminal.

And for those that refuse to carry health insurance, you are negatively impacting my premiums.
