SAN DIEGO, Aug. 10 (UPI) — A machine gun was found in the water at the Children’s Pool beach in San Diego’s La Jolla neighborhood, police say.
A person walking along the seawall near the Children’s Pool noticed the MAC-10 automatic weapon and several rounds of ammunition in about 2-3 feet of water Tuesday afternoon and alerted a lifeguard, The San Diego Union-Tribune reported.
After police secured the area, a police diver retrieved the unloaded assault weapon and 40 bullets of various calibers, San Diego police Detective Gary Hassen said.
Hassen said it did not appear the MAC-10, which is illegal to own in California without proper permitting, had been in the water long.
The gun was impounded and its serial number was being check to locate the owner.
