Lobbying Group Angered By Proposed Rules

Proposed rules from the Administration of President Barack Obama that would no longer allow Federal employees to accept gifts of any value from companies that employ lobbyists have drawn criticism from the American League of Lobbyists.

The proposals will also prohibit government officials from receiving free admission to “widely attended” conferences where they brush shoulders with lobbyists from all matter of corporate and special interest groups, according to The Washington Post.

The lobbying organization issued a statement on Monday saying that the President’s proposals will result in a “dumbing down” of government.:

“Lobbyists and their employers have knowledge that Federal employees can use and they have knowledge that we want to tap. Federal workers develop policies and regulations that affect every aspect of our society. To prevent interaction of almost any kind between lobbyists and Federal employees is not in the public interest. It will result in the dumbing-down of government at a time when public trust is at an all-time low.”

Some exemptions to the rules exist, including those for gifts from journalists or friends and gifts in connection with some political work.

Well. it is about time. Now lets end the lobbyists.

I think you’re missing the key point, Claire. Yes, lobbyists need to be neutered and kept on a short leash. Yes, elected types need to focus on their JOBS. They do NOT deserve to get RICH at our expense. They do NOT deserve to have consecutive terms in office.
As for Obummer, IF this is an IMPORTANT topic, he should have proposed and acted on it the day he took office. WHY is it IMPORTANT N O W? Claire, Opraiseme is trying to wear yet another mask. He’s relying on the good intentions of American citizens who should know better by now.
At this stage, I wouldn’t give him the luxury of an excuse to have someone feel sorry for him. He DOES NOT CARE about America. He is NOT fit to be in the White House. He’s just an Illinois wannabe gangsta-type who should have been stranded in Chicago. Anyone who can find a reason to support Olovemeatyourperil is someone who has extremely low standards for politicians. Period.

sc–Perhaps I am missing the point of this particular article. However, I am not happy with the “lobbyists.” I never have been. It is simply a situation where big business and big money dictates government policy/legislation for their own gain, a matter of corrupting the law either by private sector or corporations. It is just way past time that something/anything is done to control the lobbyists-get rid of them. This issue is not good for American government and certianly not helpful to the American public. It is just beneficial for the politicians and the private sector/corporations and “helps” the politician get elected/re-elected. And I am not praising Obama or any other politician, and I certainly do not feel sorry for any of them. They are reaping what they have sown as far as I am concerned. And they have sown disaster. All of them.

      s c,
Just what I would expect from you. The President comes out strong on a topic you can agree with and all you can do is look for a reason to attack. Obama could single handedly turn the economy around, eliminate unemployment and cut taxes all at the same time and you’d still find something wrong with it all.
