Liberal Congressman: Tea Party Groups Targeted By IRS ‘Asked For It’

June 4, 2013 by

According to one Democratic Congressman, Tea Party groups whom the IRS discriminated against had it coming because their political views are stupid.

House Rep. Jim McDermott (D-Wash.) lit into Tea Party witnesses during testimony before the House Ways and Means Committee, telling them “each of your groups are [sic] highly political” and that they should have expected to be targeted because their views weren’t in line with the prevailing sentiment in Washington, D.C.

He also groused that the conservatives were simply trying to game the system by applying for the same “tax breaks” liberal nonprofits received without delay, and said the entire Congressional investigation into the matter was just a “circus.”

“So you’re to blame…I guess that’s the message,” a disgusted Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wisc.) told the witnesses, once McDermott had finished his rant.

Ben Bullard

Reconciling the concept of individual sovereignty with conscientious participation in the modern American political process is a continuing preoccupation for staff writer Ben Bullard. A former community newspaper writer, Bullard has closely observed the manner in which well-meaning small-town politicians and policy makers often accept, unthinkingly, their increasingly marginal role in shaping the quality of their own lives, as well as those of the people whom they serve. He argues that American public policy is plagued by inscrutable and corrupt motives on a national scale, a fundamental problem which individuals, families and communities must strive to solve. This, he argues, can be achieved only as Americans rediscover the principal role each citizen plays in enriching the welfare of our Republic.
