Leave Your Whiteness At The Door

November 30, 2012 by

Leave Your Whiteness At The Door

On the syllabus for a political science class, a professor at Butler University in Indiana directs students to leave their “American-ness, maleness, whiteness, heterosexuality, middle-class status” at the door.

School officials, asked if the directive was made out of the assumption that white, middle-class, male students were inherently racist or misogynist, said that it simply serves to negate prejudices that may exist.

“Sometimes in order to broaden the conversation and broaden the understandings you’ve got to risk making people uncomfortable,” Jay Howard, dean of Butler’s College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, told The College Fix. “There’s nothing about a college education that guarantees you won’t be made uncomfortable. As a matter of fact, if you’re never made uncomfortable in your college education, you’re not really getting a college education.”

And, for one journalism student at the school, the idea of being labeled proved a little too uncomfortable.

In an article about the teacher’s policy, the student writes:

Clearly, the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at Butler University believes its students were raised as racist and misogynist homophobes who have grown to harbor many prejudices, a stance that is both offensive and hostile to any student’s ability to learn.

As a student at an institution predominantly focused on the liberal arts, I expected to hear professors express opinions different from my own. I did not expect to be judged before I ever walked through the door, and did not think I would be forced to agree with my teachers’ worldviews or suffer the consequences.

Being judged and forced to act a certain way is antithetical to how any institution of higher education should conduct itself.

As a journalism major, I will now strive to avoid the liberal arts college as much as possible, not because the college fails to provide its students with any practical knowledge, but because the college seeks to indoctrinate its students with a hostile paradigm that views people like me—an American, white, heterosexual male from a middle-class background—as evil; whitey-righty need not attend.

The policy does beg the question: Does the professor not feel it is important to ask black students to leave their blackness at the door, Hispanic students to leave their ethnicity, gay students to leave their gayness? If we’re going to pretend it is about making people uncomfortable to expand our horizons, shouldn’t we all be uncomfortable?

Of course, as California State University Long Beach professor Kevin MacDonald recently learned, suggesting that being white, straight or middle-class should not come with some antique guilt will not make you popular in the field of higher education.

Update: Article corrected for proper location of Butler University.

” Does the professor not feel it is important to ask black students to leave their blackness at the door, Hispanic students to leave their ethnicity, gay students to leave their gayness? ”

Of course those are not important for it is well known that only the White American male heterosexual, middle-class student is capable of any kind of discriminatory thought.

    • Wilson Biggs (@ItsDigitalBrony)

I don’t think this was received as it was meant at all. He probably meant just leave any prejudices or whatever you think you are at the door, to expand your horizons and have an open mind. Another instance of people taking things too damn literally.

      • jwoop66

No, I think the guy thought about the words he put in his syllabus. Don’t be naive.

      • Dennis

Really? Are you blind or just ignorant? Take things to damn literally?American-ness, maleness, whiteness, heterosexuality, middle-class status” at the door. How could you NOT take that literally. It is clear that this professor and i use that term loosely, showed who the true racists are and just how alot of our teachers think today.Im actually offended by this for it fits me to a t which means I and those like me were singled out, in other words, discriminated against. If the true objective was to make one feel uncomfortable to cause a dialogue it could have been and should have been worded very differently.

      • Gary

The professor was pretty specific. Not a whole lot of room for interpretation. Besides, it’s not like he just said it off the top of his head. He had time to sit down and write that syllabus and was able to choose his words carefully.

      • wandamurline

The should have made everyone leave theirs at the door as well….if anything, this sounds like reverse discrimination and racism on the professor’s side. The blacks and hispanics and gays are as racists as anyone else. Sorry, but the professor should be put in his place as he seems to be carrying on the divide by race and sexual preference to me. Stop it.

      • Josie Abbott

If that were true Mr. Biggs then I suggest the professor get a lesson in ‘comprehension”. If you still don’t get it, what this jackass who passes for a professor, fails to understand is the words should have been: All of you-black, white, hispanic, gay, straight-leave your prejudices at the door. This means for the minority students-leave your jealousies at the door as well. This is the only reason I can see why the professor chose to signal out white males (as he perceives them to still be the dominant factor in the world-nearly everyone would like to be white, so he sees whiteness and maleness as a threat). Too bad for him and more so for the students who will be at his mercy.

      • jcfromdc

BS! He had plenty of time to choose his barbed-arrow words AND the target context. Simplest solution of all:
FIND ANOTHER CLASS with a truly (classic) “liberal” professor, one who welcomes all opinions and viewpoints. How else can there be a true “discussion” of anything? That is the essence of a truly “liberal” eduacation. It’s like Gore “closing” the discussion on so-called Global Warming.

      • TIME

        Dear Wilson,

There are far better ways to express oneself, rather than do denigrate others humanity in such manor.
Perhaps a platform that may have been better would be,
        { If you find that others being differant from what you know or understand or feel, may not always be the way you see things ~ perhaps a hands on approach would serve you better in understandning these patterns of thinking / feeling.}

On that note I would like all of you to take a period of time per day every day and emerse yourself in differant clutures to expand your views so you can better understand why these cultures feel the way they do.
On that note ~ One must give an honest and open view of why ~ others see things in a differant LIGHT.
And that can’t be explored within the text of any book, nor can I teach you such, as this is something than must be experienced first hand.

Thus ~ To expand ones knoledge one must experience what others experience daily,
so to better do that one must drop all their patterns of thinking and go out and explore for yourself to better understand why people differant than you feel the way they do.

** > But you see Wilson ~ that would require a “Positive Person” ~ not one who’s an inflammatory person bound in “social prejudice” themself. As thats what his statmets reflect quite clearly.

Peace and Love be with you.

      • Bill

And the easter bunny is alive and well

      • Nadzieja Batki

American white male students from middle class families getting bad grades from this joker does not make you angry?

      • JUKEBOX

I believe that he wanted a classroom full of mind numbed robots, that could be programmed with his “PERFECT” ideology.

      • Sol of Texas

If that’s what the “learned man” meant, then that is what he should have written. Part of being a good teacher is the ability to communicate well. If yoou are correct about the professor’s itention, then HE clearly failed to communicate and I question his competence.

      • lady kroft

Here’s an old saying for you…and it’s very true.. “I can’t hear what you THINK, I can only hear what you SAY.”
The fact that the professor made reference to only 1 class of person tells me that that was indeed what he meant.

        • sharon

A beautiful, concise response. You hit the nail on the head. Whatever this professor was thinking, his words certainly didn’t comport. Those who feel the need to “defend” him are themselves, devoid of any fairness or reason.

      • Paul Wells

Wilson Biggs, you are a complete moron, if you don’t think that this was exceptionally biased and bigoted. I’m damn tired of fools like you thinking it’s okay when it’s one ethnic group that gets offended, then all is well. This is offensive. Offensive, and that prof. ought to be put on a very, very short leash!

      • Carl Piedmont

Let’s see, How else could, “Leave your whiteness at the door” be taken…
Maybe the students should have responded with, “Leave your racist, phobic, holier-than-thou, liberal, narcissistic, tenured, professor attitude at home”. I certainly doesn’t belong in the classroom, you “sorry excuse for a teacher.”

      • bungal

It is as obvious as anything ever that this Professor is a bigot and is requesting that white males bow to everyone else. Racial and gender bigotry should not be tolerated by any Professor or teacher of our children. The idea to leave our freedoms behind should remove him from his post, period!!! We did not serve and fight for our freedoms and the freedom of others to have some fool tell us to leave them behind.

      • Larry

Wilson, I think that it was meant exactly as it was written. Only white, straight, American males are or can be prejudiced. If the professor is in any way qualified to teach anything to anyone he should have been able to express himself much more clearly.

But then what can be expected from some ninny who teaches “political science”, sociology or some other pseudo legitimate course of study which is 99% bs and 1% malarky.

      • Casey

If that is the case, Mr. Biggs, then the professor did not write his syllabis coherently.

      • http://faccebook Beau

and since when did America not allow me to think as I please–Oh I forgot I am a racists if I do not vote for Obama

      • kathy c

If he’s a college professor and cannot express his ideas correctly, what is he doing teaching at a college???? Good grief!!!

      • Michael

As a college prof, you would think you could articulate his ideas a bit more clearly, if that was his real intent. Which I doubt very much.

      • Motov

@Wandamurline There is no such thing as “reverse discrimination” either you discriminate or you don’t. The term “reverse” implies a “righteous” form of discrimination, or discriminating against another bigot. In other words fighting “sin” with “sin”.
Were we not taught that 2 wrongs never make a right?

      • Jerry self

Your comment suggests that you have not attended a university, or that you share his liberal views. Most university professors share those extreme views.

      • Harold Olsen

If what you say is the case, then this moron is, basically, taking the attitude that non-whites are not racist and bigots. And that means he, himself, is a racist.

    • http://n/a AmFer

Guess what! As a donor/supporter of Butler, I am leaving my ‘green-ness’ at the door, Professor!

    • Nadzieja Batki

What color is the professor, what gender is “he”, what nationality does he claim to have? He definitely is also middle class. He is a also an educated idiot but the university will not usher him out the campus.

      • Casey

It doesn’t matter. Trat others as you wish to be treated.

      • joe1cr

Call it what it is DISCRIMINATION !!!

    • Vigilant

“’Sometimes in order to broaden the conversation and broaden the understandings you’ve got to risk making people uncomfortable,” Jay Howard, dean of Butler’s College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, told The College Fix.”

My, my, how to turn the concept of free speech on its head by claiming just the opposite of what is happening! It’s not “broadening” but RESTRICTING the conversation by clearly telegraphing that only the propaganda of liberal orthodoxy is acceptable. The syllabus is effectively saying, “be prepared to be programmed, and do not speak out.”

The he says, “There’s nothing about a college education that guarantees you won’t be made uncomfortable. As a matter of fact, if you’re never made uncomfortable in your college education, you’re not really getting a college education.”

The PC professors are simply preventing the libs from being “made uncomfortable” by squelching all discourse that contradicts their world view. Academic freedom on college campuses, the places where it’s supposed to flourish, died a long time ago.

      • Casey

Milton Friedman was always successful in making students uncomforatble, and always had a smile on his face. A teaching moment does not have to happen in a hostile environment.

    • Patricia

I agree with you. This is the result of Obama pushing class warfare. There is so much liberalism in the educational system the things we taught our daughter has fallen by the wayside. This man is a satan. People who have morals and ethics by which they live are scorned. Where have all the true American people gone?

    • Geoffrey

I agree that if he wasn’t meaning to be taken literally then he should have used a very different set of words. We used to have a very easy to understand sign at the gate of our farm, It said “Leave Your Hate At The Gate”. This doesn’t single out any group or insult anyone but does let everyone know that any kind of hateful behavior will not be tolerated from anyone who comes over to out house. I did not have to get in between people very much after we said this and after a few asked exactly how this was meant and I said if you start something it had better be taken past the gate or I will bounce your butt out of it. Most people understood just what was meant by this and we had no problems with most people for all the years the house was there. G.

I hope Charles’ patients are reading this observation. I used to respect Charles until he was told by FoxNews to start lying otherwise he would be fired as think-tank. You remember about three months ago he predicted and said on O’rielly Factor Show that President Obama would be reelected? Bill threatened him he would lose his job if he ever repeated such analysis. Charles stopped his candid analysis of issues and started lying. Changing candid observations of issues because you have been threatened to be fired is not professionalism. This is especially if you’re a college graduate. College graduate are trained to be independent of thinking. I warned Charles I would report him to his college to disrobe him of his degrees for engaging in lies he knew were lies. Charles stopped. That is why people don’t respect collage graduate anymore and are electing college dropout such governor as Wisconsin and Karl Rove. Here is Charles engaging in lies again. How can his patients respect him if in other forums he lies? I wouldn’t. That’s dumb. Charles should also remember he is Jewish and Jews are friends with Democrats and racial minorities. He should avoid radical Republicans lies. Once more I am warning Charles – either he stops lying or I will write to his college to strip him of his degrees. And I hope his patients are reading this observation. Once more I hope his patients are reading this posting.

      • pmbalele

You care worried about grammar? What grammar? Grammar is for lawyers and book writers. In fact the way you speak, if it’s your language, is grammatically correct. This bookish language you read is for people who want to make money of gullible people. You cannot correct somebody of his or her language. There are all kinds of slangs in different parts of this country. Have you listened how Bob Dole pronounces “President”? He says “Present”. So be it with your grammar.

      • Casey

        Who? Buster or the professor?

    • Josie Abbott

Spoken like a true nut case. I really fear for this country as if these nuts are the ones electing communists like Obama and other radical haters of White America, this country better wake up or we will go the way or Rome.

      • Sol of Texas

We have and will continue to go the way of Rome – to our own self-destruction, unfortunately.

      • pmbalele

Did you see that women wearing a T-shirt that said “White House for Whites Only” at Romney rally in last days in Florida? Republicans did not tell her to take it off. What a shame!

        • sharon

what does that have to do with this professor’s silly, stupid and racist comments? No, I did not see those signs, but if they were there, I’d say the same thing: we don’t need racists of ANY color. That’s the point I was making. The Left seems to think that all the racists are on the Right or in the Republican Party which is simply not true.

      • Aaron

        Afrench citizen answer to you.
This teacher is horrible; there is no shame to be WHITE and a member of middle class!
I learnt, in my college, that white immigrants built USA like others immigrants in South-Africa…Nobody else.
You could buy and read a book writen by M.Guy Millière, which tittle is: “Le désastre Obama” (Obama’s disaster).-Amazon.

pmbalele, you are either completely off your meds, or you meant to post elsewhere. Your post makes no sense (in context), but what the hay, a lot of other posts don’t either :)

    • Grammar King

If this posting is any indication of this person’s writing skills, then no one will take seriously any letter, written by aforementioned illiterate, requesting that a graduates degree(s) be revoked.

    • bungal

I do not know where you get your information but the Jewish are usually intelligent to support America, which in our time means voting for anyone but a Dumbocrap as they are not in support of our freedoms nor support the oath of office that they had to take. Democrats or Republicans or any should be removed from office if they violate their office oath. That would mean about 200 Democrats and 30 Republicans we would say goodbye to.

    • Patricia

Fox News is the only media outlet that tells the truth and allows both sides to air their opinions. Can you PROVE that O’Reilly really said that he would be fired. The government run media won’t let people express their opinions unless they agree with the Libs. When did the media sell-out to be one sided? Did they get stimulus money etc…?

  • Leslie Carey

Sue the Professor. Students pay for their education and should not have to put up with this crapola!

    • Bill

      That’s a good idea, Leslie
File a federal anti discrimination lawsuit against the racist bastard. I wonder if the ACLU will represent the offended

      • Paul Wells

Bill, I think you KNOW the answer to that. They won’t, and if they would tell the truth, it would because it’s not the “type” of racism that they go after!!

  • josewaleslives

Stop calling places like Butler University a place of “higher education”. What they exhibit is not education but indoctrination of an agenda that certainly cannot be confused with higher education. Stop supporting places like Butler and force these politically correct ivory tower hate mongering professors to get real jobs out here in the real world. Let them start out working at a McDonalds and see if they can get a promotion to fry cook or something honorable instead of poisoning young the minds of young dumbed down students who actually have been deceived into respecting these morons.

first of all Butler University is in Indiana, NOT ILLINOIS !

        Dear bob,

        Best wishes,

      • jcfromdc

INDIANA??? Well then, that just expalins everything!

      • GALT

        Greetings Mr. Livingston,

It is early in the a.m. on Sat and your audience has had 18 hours to read, comprehend and comment on the contents of this article by your intrepid staph writer? journalist? Sam Rolley, who:

After learning about many of the biases present in most modern newsrooms, Rolley became determined to find a position in journalism that would allow him to combat the unsavory image that the news industry has gained. He is dedicated to seeking the truth and exposing the lies disseminated by the mainstream media at the behest of their corporate masters, special interest groups and information gatekeepers.

You will need to provide far more “corrections” to this article than a geographical adjustment…….for having read all of the “comments” I can now issue the following warning to all the “willfully ignorant, functional illiterates” that inhabit this site, and in the spririt of “inclusiveness”……..for today it includes ALL OF YOU, without exception.

What are THE FACTS here? How could you possibly have an opinion for a topic on which you have no facts?

Are you under the mistaken impression that you have been given FACTS by Mr. Rolley? Why would having the facts here make a difference?

To answer that last question: Because Mr. Rolley has reached a conclusion regarding his understanding of the FACTS here……

The policy does beg the question: Does the professor not feel it is important to ask black students to leave their blackness at the door, Hispanic students to leave their ethnicity, gay students to leave their gayness? If we’re going to pretend it is about making people uncomfortable to expand our horizons, shouldn’t we all be uncomfortable?

and by doing this, he has set the stage for this “discussion”? by asking these questions……..which may or may not be reasonable questions and this is entirely dependent on the FACTS. ( not Mr. Rolley’s version of them ) After all, how can you be sure that Mr. Rolley is not also a “willfully ignorant, functional illiterate”?

Wouldn’t you feel really stupid if YOU were offering and opinion, of an opinion, to questions that were totally unrelated to the FACTS?

How stupid would you feel if, Mr Rolley provided you with the means to “check” his facts directly……..and none of you bothered to????? and so you have now been engaged in an entirely irrelevant discussion………..for hours……which was entirely contrived by Mr. Rolley’s opinion……and yours……whose result is an “irrelevant and worthless waste of time.”

If you had bothered to click on Mr. Rolley’s source you would have found this…….

A political science professor at Butler University asks students to disregard their “American-ness, maleness, whiteness, heterosexuality, middle-class status” when writing and speaking in the classroom – a practice the school’s arts and sciences dean defended as a way to negate students’ inherent prejudices.

The syllabus of the course at Butler, a small Midwestern liberal arts institution in Indianapolis, spells out that students should use “inclusive language” because it’s “a fundamental issue of social justice.”

“Language that is truly inclusive affirms sexuality, racial and ethnic backgrounds, stages of maturity, and degrees of limiting conditions,” the syllabus states, referencing a definition created by the United Church of Christ.

The syllabus of the class, called Political Science 201: Research and Analysis, goes on to ask students “to write and speak in a way that does not assume American-ness, maleness, whiteness, heterosexuality, middle-class status, etc. to be the norm.” It is taught by a black, female professor.

Mr. Rolley’s source is a “student” it would appear…..The College Fix would appear to be a source of “Your Daily Dose of RIGHT-Minded Campus News.”

Now, while there are four paragraphs here, the FACTS which provide that which would “contextually” relevant to an intelligent discussion and which none of you seem to be aware of even now……are these.

1.) The course title: Political Science 201: Research and Analysis
2.) The reasoning for the “caution”: “to write and speak in a way that does not assume American-ness, maleness, whiteness, heterosexuality, middle-class status, etc. to be the norm.”
3.) The “limiting qualification”:when writing and speaking in the classroom
4.) The identifying characteristics of the instructor: It is taught by a black, female professor.

Now in fairness to Mr. Rolley these FACTS are presented in such a fashion ( by a student, in what seems to be a biased student publication ) so that this is a case of the blind, leading the blind, leading the blind. ( but hardly an excuse given Mr. Rolley’s claims.)

If you take the title of the course…..Research and Analysis……it does tend to suggest that this is a technical course using empirical methods, statistics and other tools, in the field of Political Science.

The “warning”is limited to speaking and writing “in the classroom” and taking these two FACTS together, it makes perfect sense…… that is for the purposes of Research and Analysis the elimination of “bias” is CRITICAL………….if the result is have anything approaching a “SCIENTIFIC” claim……..of course, one must know what the words RESEARCH, ANALYSIS, and SCIENCE actually MEAN?

That this “cautionary approach” was stated by a “black female professor” is actually irrelevant…….given the “intent” of the course, since it is directed at the primary bias prevalent in the United States.

Given the overwhelming numbers of “willfully ignorant, functional illiterates” in the general population……..this statement of FACT might have been unwise……since it can and was easily twisted to “much ado about nothing”.

But there is still a missing question:

Professor, why did you focus on ““American-ness, maleness, whiteness, heterosexuality, middle-class status” and not include other potential sources of “bias” in your warning?

“That is a very good question and one which I address on the first day because it is very important to the discipline and value of the what we are trying to achieve with RESEARCH and ANALYSIS, in this area of Political SCIENCE………to provide an accurate assessment, in formulating both the questions and the interpretation of results for which we are seeking answers. At the moment, the demographics that I singled out are the most prevalent…… that it is very tempting to structure questions in such a way as to appeal to this bias if one is seeking to confirm a “predetermined” outcome….from an audience whose major component is already a known factor of the “most probable respondents” that will be answering the questions asked.”

Some might say, Professor, that your warning seems somewhat prejudicial and insensitive, and does not belong in an institution of higher education?

“It was intended as a challenge to those taking the class given the goals we are strivng to achieve in the application of this “discipline”, for the reasons I have already outlined. My obligation is to the students taking this class and is applicable to “all groups” who are here to learn the discipline to produce accurate and useful results. Ironically, anyone can fall victim to this bias………because it is the most prevalent one………so that even someone who is not in this group of “American-ness, maleness, whiteness, heterosexuality, middle-class status” , might still be tempted to appeal to it…..because of the demographic influence it will have in the anticipated outcome.

Again, the subject is RESEARCH and ANALYSIS…….and the goal is the elimination of “all bias” if possible………so the message for the students taking this class is actually “all inclusive”……after all, if one can be made aware of the potential bias that is “most common” as an influence in distorting results and their interpretation…..which is a temptation for “everyone”…… is rather obvious that such caution would apply to “groups” whose demographics were not as large, but would still present a challenge to avoid a number of similar assumptions that would skew the results diminishing their usefulness in what we are striving to achieve.”

I think I am following you Professor, but it might help our READERS if you could provide a useful example of what you are trying to teach here?

“As a matter of fact, the recent election results offer just such an example……if you remember certain “polls” indicated that Romney had a far better expectation of success in the outcome than was actually achieved…….Rasmusson, and others had predicted that he would win based on their polling, and this differed from other “polls” by a significant margin, which led to further assumptions by other pundits and higher expectations among those who heard what they wanted to hear.

Unfortunately, these polls had made an assumption regarding the disaffection among those voters who had voted for Obama in the previous election, and then factored this “assumption” in their results……..instead of actually conducting the RESEARCH to actually determine the actual effect of this factor, among likely voters.

Their ANALYSIS, reflected this “assumed bias”, which explains the differences between these “polls”, and others who avoided this mistake……..both in predicting the results and the actual outcome. Of course, most people are still unaware of these FACTS…..which is the message to my students and a critical one, for the subject they have come HERE to learn. Of course, NOT KNOWING, what we are trying to do or why……could be distorted or misunderstood…….even by a “student” who yet to attend a class……..but then that is what the word “prejudice” means, does it NOT?

*author’s note……..all parts were played by the author, to include: critic, editor, journalist, reporter, professor and MESSENGER……..the FACTS here are those available from the “article’s source”……which is another article by a “student journalist” in a “student publication” who “bias” is clearly indicated in the “masthead”……therefor the FACTS are restricted to those “actually available” and directly quoted.

        * The facts regarding the “polls” cited at the end of the piece, Rasmussen et al are also accurate as to cause and result.

        * The MESSENGER fully expects the “usual respnse” from the “usual suspects.”

” To conquer, first DIVIDE.” ( and then HANG, separately.)

      • Jeep

Galt, your response is irrelevant. And, adding an “etc.” at the end does not excuse the singling out of a particular demographic either. The intent is clear on its own. Your long winded and invalid conclusions are not worthy of further discourse. BTW don’t bother responding to me, this is just quick passage to anyone interested to not bother reading your blabber.

      • GALT

Shame they have to go past me to get to you……..only to have read the same thing
that every “willfully ignorant, functional illiterate” has to say…..which is NOTHING!!!!

Thank you for sharing YOUR personal version of NOTHING………et cetera

  • Fedup

    What are you babbling about???

    • pmbalele

In the military we are told told the same. “Leave your degrees at the gate and come in here as soldier”.

      • Casey

Well, you got part of it right.

      • Frank Kahn

Strange, I was in two branches of the service and I never was told that. I do, however, remember that all Officers have degrees, so how did that happen if they left their degrees at the gate.

Oh, and by the way, pmbalele, grammar is not language. If you use grammar that is hard to understand it is bad and needs correction. Also, a word is not grammar so stop telling us about how he said present instead of president.

      • GALT

“Glory days, well they’ll pass you by….Glory Days, in the wink of a young girls eye

Glory days, Glory days, Glory days……

Great to BE ALIVE, eh Frank??????

  • Flashy

What’s wrong ? the class is about being non-white non-middle class in today’s America. If one objects to the wording, it’s a telling sign they should be taking the class. Simple.

    • Gary

I’m trying to figure out what race, gender, or sexual orientation have to do with a political science class anyway.

      • teatreeblog

tell us why it they don’t have anything to do with it?
Your family, friends, neighbors, co-workers, enthicity, sexual orientation, religion and more all go into your political beliefs, even into who you are as a person overall. To be truly objective, you must suspend all of your beliefs (or as many as possible) to see the whole picture accurately.

      • Patriot1776

So only the white, middle class males need to take off their beliefs to see the whole picture accurately? Blacks, females, homosexuals, hispanics,…don’t have any pre-consieved concepts that might inhibit their view of reality?

I can agree that all need to step “outside of the box” to look at the world through others eyes. I cannot accept that whitey is wrong and must be changed.

      • Nadzieja Batki

TeaTreeBlog, you just made yourself a liar since your comment does not lend itself to being objective.

      • Flashy

Nad..Tree is correct. bias is inherent in almost all decisions…and to recognize that how one was raised, where one was raised, their lives and contacts all create conditions for bias is called objectivity. Of course, objectivity must take into account the bias of others who do not take the effort or have the awareness to balance their decision making.

      • Hedgehog

Political Science is an oxymoron, like Military Intelligence.

      • teatreeblog

Nad, so, ummm, what did I say that was a lie and why was it a lie?

    • Patriot1776

So flashy, are you saying that simply because of the color of their skin and their economic background, that makes the white, middle class male is a problem for “today’s America”

      • Flashy

Who said anything about “problem” ? Minority non-middle class students are well familiar with white middle class culture. The past elections show white dominance in our culture is fading and our culture is becoming multi cultural. Would you rather we have white middle class students go into the post grad world unknowing and not having a more complete awareness ? think of how a marketing major would view the changing societal mores…and which person would be better suited for a marketing position … as an employer, would you hire the one more aware and understanding of multi cultural aspects..or one not aware of that segment of the marketplace?

I don’t see the class, the syllabus, nor the subject matter to be a “problem” … and as i suggested, those who do would do well to take that course.

      • Bill

        Calm down, Viet Nam Vet
Your comments will not help us move in a positive direction of judging individuals as individuals

        • sharon

But before we can decide upon individuals and who they are, we have to ensure that professors judge EVERY individual (regardless of race, color, gender, sexual orientation, etc.) fairly and assume because they are a particular color or gender, that they are automatically prejudice.

    • Curt Siters

I agree with Flashy. But lets look at it this way…
#1 In college very few courses or professors are mandatory – meaning you have a choice.
#2 the demographics of college students leans STRONGLY toward middle-class white heterosexual men.
#3 No one forces anyone to attend college or any particular college or university. Don’t like it? Don’t go or select another one. Simple.
#4 A large number of liberal arts classes are designed for the student to challenge what they believe. To challenge how they think. To teach them how to be critical thinkers. To teach them how to engage in productive discussions. They don’t force anyone to think along the same lines/in the same way as anyone else.
#5 If colleges were indoctrinating people, my guess is that 75% of Americans would be liberal at this point (based on how many people have degrees), but this is not the case as America is split about 50/50 as evidenced by the last election.

    • Josie Abbott

And Flashy, it deals with the professor’s jealousy of white maleness and what it means and has meant, for the country and the world at large. Whites by and large, are still looked up to as being the smartest, and the ones still in control (even after hundreds of years when this country first came into being). I don’t see that as changing any time soon. This is why so many minorities hate whites, especially males. They perceive them as not being “punished” for their crimes of superiority and how their actions dominated the country (and even much of the world) for so long. To that I say: Get Over It!!! Move on!! The best way to show one does not agree with ANY prejudice (no matter who it is coming from: minorities or whites), is to make an effort to “know” each other and Respect each other even if we don’t always agree on everything.

      • Flashy

josie…whoa. Methinks you have a very twisted misconception of reality. Those words you wrote are what my daughter would term words of “igneck trash” ( Ignorant redneck…)

Perhaps you should take time to become enlightened as to today’s world and re-shape your views accordingly… unless, of course, you are partial to being viewed as “igneck trash’ …

      • Flashy

        Nad here’s your sign …

      • momo

Flashy having progeny makes the case for eugenics.

      • Paul Wells

Right momo, or abstinence, or vasectomy or other such ideas. In Flashy’s case it’s too late, the gene pool has already suffered by his vacuous ideologies being passed on.

      • Patricia

Why the jealousy of people who work hard and contribute to society. This jealously is the work of the Obama administration. Remember Obama is also white. Where did this idea of hatred for people who are successful? Instead of living in their jealousy, they should get a JOB and contribute to society.

    • Bill

      Great idea, Flashy
Then we can continue to perpetuate segregated classes of people. There is no way we should be teaching that it is better to be judging a person by their character instead of the color of their skin. We need to keep racism alive and well. It is good cash flow for the arrogant non productive academics

You offer such wonderful ideas to this forum

    • Chester

Flashy, usually I can agree with you, but this time you need to go back and READ what that “professor” wrote. He very specifically singled out white, American, middle class, hetero-sexual males as having problems in his class, and you say he wasn’t playing favorites. Excuse me, but that man(?) seems to have a problem with ninety per cent of the people who make up his classes. I am fairly liberal in my beliefs, but even I would have a problem with this whatever.

      • Flashy

Bill and Chester..let me ask..what is the dominant culture in this nation? That is precisely the mistake Romney and the GOP made this past election. For instance, if US Hispanics were a standalone country, their market buying power would be one of the top twenty economies in the world. the buying power of the African American market is reported to reach $1 trillion this year (both from Forbes)

So…go ahead and market to the Hispanic and Black community…if you are a small business owner, and are not savvy enough, or not smart enough to hire someone savvy enough…you’re losing out on a very significant market.

That’s just in a business aspect. We have all seen what happens when political parties concentrate solely on white cultural aspects in gathering support and votes.

We won’t even try to dive into social aspects right now.

To blindly and arrogantly demand that the Nation’s differing cultures should be ignored is not only racist, but idiotic. In business, in social, in personal contexts. There is not one valid good reason I can think of which would support being against this class OR the wording of the syllabus…

      • Bill

My business exposes me to all races and cultures and I deal with different cultures on a regular basis. My experiences have come from interacting with other cultures and not from some racist overeducated idiot lecturing me on his bias crap.

How about you, Flashy. What are your day to day business interactions with other cultures. What do you know on how to market to other cultures? Do you know about feng shui and what cultures it applies to. How about Kenyans?

Let’s see what you know, Fleshy

      • Flashy

“feng shui” LOL…let me guess, you live in California? Criminey Bill…if that’s your idea of cultural marketing, it’s very very very simplistic. About 10 years behind the times. I’m talking about the finer points of psychology and marketing more than a quick little sales pitch.

You brought up feng shui … Try this…how many shades of black are there?

      • Bill

If you are showing a $5,000,000 home to an asian buyer, you better be aware of feng Shui , or you might blow the sale.

I sold 5 houses and leased three dental offices to a family of Thai dentists. The principles of feng shui were the deciding factors in the sales decisions.

So, laugh some more about being aware of feng shui in business. I will be laughing on my way to the bank

    • Bill

In the words of a famous philosopher,
      “Can’t We All Get Along”

      • Vigilant

        Rodney King? Good one. LOL!

    • Cliffystones

      Hey Flashy,

If I lived near there I’d go out of my way to take this class. And I’d leave my “American-ness, maleness, whiteness, heterosexuality, middle-class status” at the door.

I’d come to class every day dressed as a Confederate Solider. I’d challenge this fool the same way Rodney Dangerfield took on that snooty business professor in “Back to School”. And I’d secretly record the sessions and post the good parts on You Tube. I’m sure they would be hilarious.

      • Flashy

Well Cliffy…if you want to pay good money to waste your time…and get a whole lot of people mad for wasting their money and learning…be my guest. I’d venture after the first couple of minutes, you’d have about 100% of the others laughing at you at being “the crazy guy” … nice rep to have eh?

    • Sol of Texas

Flashy — So you believe in segregation after all?

      • Flashy

Eh? how’d the heck did you come up with that idea from what i wrote?

    • Frank Kahn

Flashy, how did you get the idea that the class is about not being something from the syllabus? The words given simply state that white middle class normal men need to leave who they are at the door. That is obviously discrimination against a vast majority of people in this country.

      • GALT

Your attention to detail “astounds”…..just kidding Frank……I mean I am “really” kidding!!!!!

        • Frank Kahn

I dont care if someone who is willfully ignorant, and feels a need for self praise has a meaningless comment here. Flashy was incorrect in his assumption based on the miniscule evidence presented for discussion. It was even incorrect if viewed by your long winded rebuttal to the blog.

      • GALT

MY FACTUAL REBUTTAL…….just doing what any actual INTELLIGENT person
would have done……….especially anyone who HAD A MIND and ACTUALLY CARED
ABOUT…….important stuff…….and actually KNEW WHERE THEY WERE….and had a CLUE….what they were doing???????

        PLEASE….wonder boy……please show me my error……..!!!!!!!

You all got sucked in to a contrived piece of CRAP……and the only reason I used
blind 3x… because is shorter than using “willfully ignorant, functionally illiterate” 3x

You do realize that the “black female professor” that is the “cause” of this “story”
had no input here…..except for the “challenge” in her syllabus, for THAT course.?

Oh and let us be clear ONCE AGAIN….my rebuttal was addressed to Mr. Livingston…

It is not the first time, nor will it be the last……..maybe he will defend you, or Mr Rolley,
        or DavidH………..

        or the silence will continue……..

Eventually, at some point, the significance of that FACT might make an impression????

Oh. BTW I am only citing you here today…….and “it’s strictly business, not personal”….

because I would very much like you to be as smart as you think you are……but at
the moment I know that, that is something you could not possibly understand.

        Que sera, sera…….whatever will be………………..

        • Frank Kahn

I did not refute your rebuttal to Mr. Livingston in any way. That would be a construct in your mind, not my words.

And, in the line of you emphasizing who your post was to, my rebuttal was to Flashy, not you.

If you care to check the entire thread of this particular post, you will find my comments directed at Flashy’s claim on the subject of the course. I never joined in on the ranting about how bigoted the professor was.

I did not consider the subject to be of sufficient importance to investigate the context, nor to check the validity of your rebuttal.

  • Gillysrooms in Australia

Who really cares about the intent but it got lots of publicity for the college and the professor. Any publicity is good publicity especially if its all free.

  • Right Brain Thinker

Uh, folks. Did it ever occur to anyone that people actually ought to go into the class and see what the truth behind the “controversial statements” might be? All this ranting over perceptions is senseless until the professor really starts to “teach”—-then you may find something to complain about (and write about—Sam has told you little of substance, but he HAS stirred you up as he gets paid to do).

And the extensive quote from a “journalism major”? Clearly he is a prime candidate for employment by FAUX NEWS when (IF) he graduates. His refusal to think makes him a sure bet for FAUX.

    • Josie Abbott

Ditto for MSNBC, CNN and those other “lame stream” media who choose to openly get behind their candidate and therefore suppress or worse, lie about the other side. This is what I’m talking about-Right Brain Thinker can’t be totally blamed as this person has been indoctrinated to believe that any station, news source that doesn’t see their candidates as “Gods” as MSNBC and CNN does, they have to be ‘Faux”. Even though it has been proven time and again that ONLY Fox airs both sides and if mistakes are made, they readily admit them. Something the others will Not do. Case in point-Do you honestly believe that if Obama was a white conservative rather than a half-black communist, his propensity for gay sex and bath houses, as well as his real birth place, wouldn’t be front page news on those channels? Think about it.

      • Flashy

“it has been proven time and again that ONLY Fox airs both sides and if mistakes are made, they readily admit them. ”

LMAO … are you serious???? Wow….

      • Nadzieja Batki

Flashy, you just admitted that you watch Fox News 24/7/365.

      • Flashy

Nad…does it come across to you i watch Fox McNews much?

    • Bill

      Right Brain Thinker,
Are you showing a little bias against a student that questions his professor?

      Very open minded of you

    • Wake The Sleepers(Jay)

Right-brain-chugging says: Sam has told you little of substance, but he HAS stirred you up as he gets paid to do).

If that’s the case, then you must be the “Goose” that lays the golden eggs. I’m sure Sam appreciates your generous and tireless-contribution!

  • rendarsmith

“As a matter of fact, if you’re never made uncomfortable in your college education, you’re not really getting a college education.” Ok, let’s tell the rest of the students to leave their “anti-American-ness, femaleness, coloredness, homosexuality, lower-class status” at the door, and let’s see how that roles out.

    • Gman

That’s what should be done. But since the sense of entitlement is something that White America has as an inheritance, it just makes sense to “ask” the entitled ones to take a step back and attempt to put themselves in the shoes of the other portions of our society that are made to be / treated like second class citizens.

      • Josie Abbott

Hopefully, you will remember that the next time your son or daughter is singled out not for what they did, but for the color of their skin. There’s an old adage: two wrongs don’t make a right”. Instead of perpetuating prejudice, this professor should take a stand to weed it out, but missed a perfect opportunity to do so. What a shame!! He let his Own prejudice speak for him. How on earth are we suppose to teach our kids Anything of value when the folks we trust to teach them are guilty as well?

      • Nadzieja Batki

So you are admitting that you don’t like people who have dreams and ambitions and can set themselves goals and bring those goals to fruition.

        • sharon

I couldn’t agree with you more, and that’s what I meant about jealousy. This professor and some of the respondents on this blog have it against whites because they worked hard, and earned their money, unlike many who would rather have the government “take care of them”. My uncle, who passed away at 86) was an FDR avid supporter, however he had to acknowledge that the poor and lower class of Today are NOT comprised of the “proud, hard working folks in his time. He used to tell me, “it seems today’s youth and older folks are not taking jobs that they consider “beneath them”, or they’re whining about their salaries”. He went on to say-in his day the poor were too busy doing ANY job to whine about how little it paid, or how much the rich were to ‘blame” for everything.

    • Flashy

That’s done every day…what’s your point?

      • wayne

In one of your wonderful, talk down your nose, big mouth, know it all, paragraphs up above, you wrote about how we had become more diverse as a country, and apparently considered that a good thing. You obviously dislike all of the attributes of the people excluded by the syllabus. All of the people left off of the list, have done more harm to this country then can ever be fixed. You and people like you, are part of the problem. We are numerous trillions of dollars in debt because of your kind of crap. Non working, live off the rest of us, mouth breathing, inbred, morons.

  • Tonto

I am glad to know the professor has a job and an opportunity to pay taxes. The real world would not tolerate this goofy comment and attitude.

I am glad he is not teaching my kids!

    • Nadzieja Batki

But he has taught others to be like himself and they may be teaching your kids.

  • dan

    I’m not white….I’m pigmently challenged

    • Bill

The pigmetally challenged should be a protected class with all of the perks and benefits that go with it.

  • Josie Abbott

I just want to say that judging by the responses to this professor, I am heartened by the many who rightfully, to this “teacher” to task. However, I see danger in that there are a few who don’t see anything wrong with this kind of prejudice, or fail to see hatred and prejudice of any kind unless it is coming from a white male. Truly tragic, and a true disgrace to his profession.

    • Sol of Texas

Josie — It strikes me that those who embrace the professor’s sentiments are in their heart of hearts avowed segregationists … as was the American Progressive movement tht preceded them.

  • Bill

It sounds like Butler University is run by a bunch of racists. Our tax dollars at work.

These people should be fired and stripped of any benefits. Let them fend for themselves in the real world. Instead of sitting in their ivory towers and being financed by the taxpayers

The schools should be teaching more “econmics as it applies in the real world classes”. Such as “you can’t bring in 180 billion dollars a month and spend 300 billion dollars a month for very long”

  • alpha-lemming

Welcome to the Ward Churchill redux….. thank God for tenure.

  • http://liberty Tony

To Everyone: Could we all please KNOCK IT OFF!! I stated this about an article of this same type of message a week ago. This ethnic rubbish is not going to get our nation anywhere except to the trash heap. We need to work together. If not, our nation will be like Bosnia-Herzogovnia of the 1990′s. NOW PLEASE STOP IT!! TGIF!!

    • Bill

Again, “Can’t We All Get Along”

      • sharon

I would agree however until and unless we are more careful in who we allow to teach our children (this dummy/racist professor comes to mind), what do you expect folks to do? Especially those white males who are the ones being unfairly blasted?

  • Mike

I went to UC Santa Cruz, a notoriously liberal school. The more conservative students would always smirk and talk under their breath. It seemed that the school went out of its way to preach tolerance- except in the case of the white/corporate establishment. In that case there was definitely a hatred.

I always thought it was interesting. Liberal teachers and the sheep students trying to break down the American values- forgetting that those same values pay the teachers salary and make education possible in the first place.

  • Jim B

Such race bating buffoonery by supposed adults on young adult who know far better. It bodes poorly on the academic class, shameful!

  • danlshort

This is absolutely fascinating. Let’s see if we leave our whiteness at the door, what do we do—gather around a campfire and contemplate eating people?
How absolutely ignorant that our society and the world don’t get it—the advancement of civilization is the result of what the white race has accomplished over time. From the Western Canon, to the Religions concept of Luther, the laws of Britain, and the wonder of America are all an exponential advancement of civilization—directed by the white man.
To advance ignorance is absurd—yet our academia persist this is the agenda.

    • teatreeblog

so, the arabs didn’t create algebra (used very widely around the world, especially in business) or advance astronomy? the chinese didn’t invent gunpowder and guns and rockets? The Greeks didn’t invent Democracy? The first European settlers in America received no help at all from the natives?
Karl Marx (a white european) didn’t create Communism that lead to the USSR? Europe didn’t have the Inquisition and launch Crusades? Early America did not enslave millions of people?
Please, many other cultures have contributed just as much if not more than white man and white man isn’t the most benevolent being on this planet.

      • bungal

We did not have millions in population, let alone that many in slavery! Who were the first to serve as slaves in the Americas? The Germans, who settled in Pennsylvania after being freed. The slave traders here decided it was cheaper and faster to get Africans as slaves because German slaves had to take a land trip to the sea.

George Washington tried to remove slavery from the colonies but his proposition lost by one vote! He did what he could and bought slaves to free them from others. He treated them as family. He was a true Christian and did what he could for others. Good many still say he is the “Father of our Country!” He deserves our respect as such!

  • Bret

This is why racism and all other negative comments are always being said. And people wonder why hate and racism is still alive and well in the country. Because of people like these that state they are intelectuals and the rest of us are stupid racists and stuff and need to be called out on it everyday. Its because of these people that all this is always in the forefront of any discussion. And why nobody can just ask a question, they have to make it clear that their is no racist undertones to the question. These people who have made it their responsibility to keep racisim alive is the reason why we as a country will never get past this mountain, it will be here forever. I personally would not pay for my education from someone like this. Tenure or not if nobody signed up for his class the university would have no reason to keep him if nobody was paying for his class. We as people in society today must stop perpetuating the problems of the past and try to grow as individuals, and we must ignore and turn our back on those who want to keep thier rehtoric alive, if we can do that they loose their power and eventually they will be the unemployed and homeless individuals asking for assistance and we can tell them how to act or just let them rot. I bet Universities would change their tune if their student enrollment dropped dramatically, and they could not afford to keep their backing of these radically thinking and teaching individualls. Plus we might actually get rid of a few universities that we don’t need.

  • Dave

on your “spash paage / intro” your story about Butler University says “a professor at Butler University in Illinois directs ” but on the story itseld you say” a professor at Butler University in Indiana directs” – which is where it IS, in Indianapolis specifically. Get it right! Everyone who knows Butler (and rememeber they were in the NCAA final four a couple of years back so quite a few are familiar with the school) knows it is in INDIANA. It just looks stupid to say Illinois, tell your editor to have another cup of coffee.

  • Viet Nam Vet 67-68

Amazing, I posted a blog here and came back 20 minutes later and it gone, I thought we had a place where we could express opinions but I guess we get the same censorship that Abomination and Romney put on their people. Viet Nam Vet 67-68

    • bungal

I am also a vet, 65-67 and my father gave his life in WWII as a tail gunner in a B-17. He did not die in battle but they ran out of fuel. I asked to go to Nam! I took 7 others with me to the trailer to request this. I found out that college girls were corrupting us! They were being lied to right and left. Only the guys that were dating college girls were angry at me for asking to go and taking 7 others with me.

We should note that Chinese Citizens still do not have the right to vote and that they just appointed their new leadership! We may also note that idiots from the Democratic Party approved of NAFTA and the average wage for a laborer in China working for GM was about 2.50 an hour, USD! The same in Mexico.

      • bungal

Comment continued to my fellow Veteran. A black Florida Congressman has recently spilled the beans on 81 in our Congress and Senate! He said they are totally Communist, which means against our rights in our Constitution and think the same as Carl Marx. Citizens are just to ignorant to have the freedom to vote to elect. I agree in part by this last election, but we note there is much corruption in the medias. We note that in 1970 we have Apollo 13. The Senate and House passed a resolution for Americans to pray for them. We have come a long way, too bad is wrong direction.

  • rabidconservative

It’s not a coincidence that the party in power has taken every opportunity to likewise divide America along these same lines of race, gender, perversion, class and love of country. Divide and conquer is the dnc’s method and they aren’t backing down.

    • bungal

We should all note that what was accused of with the other parties was what the Democrats were doing! They accused of racism, when there was none and has not been any for many years! I would of simply said Obama is half white, so where is the racism?

We note that Hitler did not invent divide and conquer and it is in the writings of the Communist Party. Weather did stop the Germans march towards Moscow, but Hitler got the ideas from Stalin. Stalin new it all! Stalin’s package to the USA and to others was already in the making. The Korean War was already on the agenda! The Chinese, which still do not allow voting have always been friends with Moscow, with only slight differences. We have been and are under attack and it comes from many Democrats!

      • Patricia

Research history (before the Marxists rewrite it) who founded the KKK? The Democrats!!!!
So as to hide this fact, they pretend to care about the poor and other ethnic groups. We are in financial crisis in the USA and Obama etc are taking a 4 million, three week vacation in Hawaii using OUR money. Why doesn’t he help us instead of being against us?

  • justamused

Maybe the “professor” is a mixed race, hermaphroditic, lower class troll recently graduated from UC Berkley! Does NOT know or associate with any person that is AGLO-SAXON (not freakin’ caucasian)and Butler University was sintrigued by the idea that some gullable white kids could be humiliated for the accident of their birth!

  • Charlie R

Lets see …… white males get instructions on what to leave out side the door.
Other groups, now apparently the “majority”, can enter with their feminism, blackness , brownness and what ever else intact . Apparently, according to school officials, these favored groups have no bias or prejudice. It just Caucasian males that have problems and deserve strictures.

Well, nothing new here if you haven’t noticed white males are typically the fall guys in commercials and the “mixed majority” are always the smart ones extolling the virtues of products. If this is not PC de-facto racism that I do not know what is, So much for that equality thing.

The instructor at Bradley and school officials perpetuate the divisiveness that infect this country.

  • Bill

How about leave your blackness at the door or your muslimness at the door how about leave you at the door.

  • Herbe

And of course, all the instructors and administrators who prejudge all male white students on the basis of race are themselves aging 60s misfits who are male white self loathing homosexuals.

  • Jim W.

If the professor had the least bit of professionalism and basic manors the statement would have been along the lines of “Please leave your preconceived ideas at the door. We intend to have very frank discussions of the subject matter”. Please note the lack of insults and Juvenal name calling.

    • bungal

I do not see that lack, of so called insults matters here! His statement is against freedoms and it is racist and it does not matter who or what he is supporting after that statement!

I was married for 24 years to a wonderful wife. I made a mistake 5 years before and at the 24 year mark, probably because of a few Liberal female friends, she left and filed for divorce. So I looked at dating online and dating services. I was directed to a black lady to date. I had no problem with her race. We met with her sister at a Big Boy. Eventually my date asked, “Are you in favor of “Affirmative Action!”” I said no, unless it means supporting one race over another. She got mad and left. Her sister knew what I meant! The date was corrupted by Liberal liars! Her sister knew this!

  • Alex

This particular professor, and others like him who are constantly on the defensive with a “sacred cow” that they logically and morally cannot defend. So it is easier to go on the offensive and cut off at the knees any possibility of critical thinking. Then having made themselves “safe”, or making themselves “feel” safer, they dare to position themselves as the ones who are daring in their thinking. Amazing!

  • Rosegarten

Why don’t all you unhappy grippers and complainers get on the first boat outta here. You are a drain on the country, spewing your idiot whims every day. I say goodbye and good riddance.

    • bungal

American-ness? What Country should we be supporting? Why did this fool not tell us? Ah, maybe the UN that wants to take legal guns away from honorable citizens and let the International MOB continue to have them? We saw this with the Obama support of the MOB drug trafficking and the Liberal media fools do not follow it up! Cowards or fools? Okay, so an English reporter was nuked in England! Think about all our sacrifices by all that supported and served freedom for all in our world! He, as we all, should come against liars and cowards in our media, anywhere! This person is a fool, no matter what others suggest about his intelligence!

    • sharon

And you should learn to spell. Grippers is spelled with one “p”, not two. (It’s gripers with a long I sound, not “grippers” with a short I sound).

  • Louis Lemieux

The professor at Butler University, Indiana, who directed his students to leave their “American-ness, maleness, whiteness, heterosexuality, middle-class status” at the door was probably well intentioned but failed to realize that we ALL need to be proud for what we are. It certainly was an awkward directive to the students.

    • rocketride

It wasn’t merely awkward, it was a deliberate attack.

      • Louis Lemieux

I do not doubt what the professor did but I’m not perfect enough to understand completely his motives. I love the truth too much to judge another person this way.

  • Joseph

Went thru all this crap growig up – Give it up, stop taking offense to everything said as an excuse to drop out of engaging one another to arrive at a reasonable and logical conclusion as to why we must cooperate and work with one another to enhance the IDEA OF AMERICA.. This is akin to a marriage – I didn’t marry Mrs. Perfect nor did She marry Mr. Perfect; But, it is our ability to overlook each others faults that has allowed us to continually love one another, for we know that we are in this together for the long haul. Do we have a perfect union? Nay! We’re just working toward a more perfect Union. Kind of like OUR Beloved America. Proud to be an American! Hope you are too!

  • Ann

I am a woman, but if I saw a sign like that on the door of a class, I would immediately drop the class, because the teacher is obviously a BIGOT!

  • Allan Carter

Days have pased where they try to teach right and wrong, its the thinking of the teacher, need to check who the teacher are before you send your kids there. they no longer teach from the approved books. They teach what they think or believe. Sad. Going to a lot of trouble down the road from all this.
Its just a shame we are getting away from a persons right to be happy and do their own thing. What the hell does what another person wants to do have anything to do with you, if it doesn’t effect you. We need people and the Government to get out of our lives, Period.
(STOP) trying to tell us what we can do, when we can, how to do it, just stay out of it.
    Allan Carter

  • Alan Greiner

Here is a pragmatic reply to the brainless twit “professor” at Butler. If you will sign an agreement to leave and NEVER to return to our nation, I will start a financial campaign on your behalf to collect just enough money to ship you to Syria, Palestine or any other muslim paradise. We can discuss later what our options would be if you should succeed in returning. From the number of comments above, I think it could be an answer. The alternative that I would agree to would be that you accept an indentured untenured position at Hillsdale College in Michigan.

Maybe the students should ask their revered “professor” to leave his stupidity at the door…

  • Damon

If anybody does not understand this let me explain–the Professor meant exactly what he said with no details missing. Go pull up the Communist Manifesto and see how the progressives are attacking the White Race and using the minority races to over take us.

Liberal bias in academia -Professor Values.

Professor “values” refer to the common value system embraced by a large percentage of professors, just as Hollywood “values” refers to the common value system of many in Hollywood and the entertainment industry. Professor “values” are currently one of the most prevalent forms of liberal indoctrination.

An extremely high percentage of professors disagree with conservative principles, but very few replace them with the discredited philosophy of postmodernism. Professors’ common value system typically includes atheism, antichristian politics, censorship, socialism, unjustified claims of expertise and knowledge (for example, the dogmatic promotion of the theory of evolution, liberal beliefs, liberal grading, liberal bias, anti-patriotism, lack of productivity, bullying or discouraging conservative students (for example, home-schoolers), and promotion of sexual immorality.

In a Zogby poll, 58% of Americans said that the bias of professors is a serious problem, while 39% said it is a “very serious” problem. The survey demonstrated further that “an overwhelming majority also believe that job security for college professors leaves them less motivated to do a good job than those professors who do not enjoy a tenured status – 65% said they believe non-tenured professors are more motivated to do a good job in the classroom.”

One study in 2008 found that “Texas university professors overwhelmingly favor Democratic candidates in their campaign contributions.”

Professors rarely engage in wrongdoing while completing research. “About 1,000 potential incidents of fabrication, falsification or plagiarism in scientific research go unreported every year, according to a survey that suggests such misconduct is far more prevalent than suspected. … 22 percent was by a professor or senior scientist.”

“There is no place on earth so close-minded as the modern University. The lack of diversity of thought is unmatched anywhere on earth.”

Can the village-idiot be far behind? wait for it…..

    • Right Brain Thinker

The village idiot has already arrived, Jay. In the person of one who would cite Conservapedia as a source for anything more than some of the stinkiest horsepucky on the planet. LOL

  • old hillbilly

Don’t go to school in IL. Don’t live in IL. Don’t hire anyone who went to school in IL. Don’t buy anything made in IL.

  • Drifterdan

What does wandamurline mean by Reverse Discrimination? Discrimination is discrimination! Plain and simple.

  • Deborah

We can take all the white kids out of the schools who feel this way and see how far they get. There are still plenty of schools that these prejudices aren’t affecting. It’s time to take a stand and put an end to this behavior.

  • T. C. Smith

Actually, this is not new in the realm of “HIGHER” learning. (I emphasize the term “higher” here on purpose, for those of the liberal, learning em pared). In 1972, when I separated from Honorable service to my country, I took some classes in one of the better, (I thought), institutions of higher learning. (I won’t mention its name but it’s initials are ASU). In my first semester of basic philosophy, I had the great joy to have one who thinks as this enlightened person does, as my professor. As he was lecturing the class in the proper way of thinking, I asked why we should adopt his way of thinking, as I as a person of 32 years, already have had a lot of philosophical experience, and thought his personal philosophy was all wet. (He insisted that his philosophy was the only correct one). The next day I was expelled from the class, and according to the dean of students, there was nothing I could do about it. If you are in his class, you need to think as he does. (Does anyone know the words that I used to depart the dean’s office, That’s right **** ***)! That right boys and girls, 40 years ago, it was already starting to happen. In the immortal words of Pogo, the possum, “We has met the enemy, and he is us”. Look it up!
