Lawmakers Try To Block The Closure Of Guantanamo

October 9, 2009 by

Lawmakers try to block the closure of Guantanamo The Guantanamo Bay prison in Cuba may not be closed after all if the slew of legislative measures proposed in several upcoming spending bills is passed.

The facility, which has been the object of sharp criticism from libertarians as well as civil and human rights advocates, was due to be closed in the next four months, based on President Obama’s first executive order signed on January 22.

However, critics ¬- especially those in Congress – have alleged the administration has not properly explained what will happen to the freed detainees who are terrorist suspects.

"For nine months, the Obama administration has insisted the detention facility at Guantanamo Bay be shuttered within the year; but what have we seen in that time?" asked Republican Representative Harold Rogers, quoted by Agence France Presse.

"[There is no] plan. No idea of how to proceed," he added.

TheHill.com reports that Rogers sponsored a measure in the 2010 Homeland Security Department budget to prevent the transfer of detainees from Guantanamo Bay to the U.S. It passed by a vote of 258 to 163, including 88 Democrats.

Other appropriations bills containing provisions to block the facility’s closure include the Senate defense spending bill.

Last week, the Department of Justice revealed three detainees had been transferred from the prison to Ireland and Yemen.

Media reports suggest the interagency Guantanamo Review Task Force has cleared 78 detainees, or about a third of the population of the facility, to leave.

It seems this administration started out flamboyantly signing the bill to shut down Gitmo as a gesture of keeping campaign promises. It was only the beginning of short-sightedness. Rushing into bail outs, cash for clunkers, and including the close of Gitmo, it doesn’t appear that the big picture was being looked at. Now what? I for one do not want suspected terrorists housed in American prisons. I believe this would give them too much opportunity to recruit those who have grudges against society due to their incarceration. Personally I think they are fine where they are. Why there was such a big brouhaha about Gitmo anyway is a mystery…

    • JeffH

These terrorists can rot in Gitmo. Never ever allow them on Americas soil. A bad idea from the start, and can’t even garner the support of the Dem majority. Maybe there is hope in America!

      • eyeswideopen

So, what you are saying, is that our prison systems are so lacking that we can’t house criminals? We do have mass murders, bombers, serial killers in our prisons, but we are so incompetent that we can’t handle prisoners of war? Nice that you think so highly of our prison system. Is there anything that you think we do well?

        • Warrant

These are not criminals or prisoners of war. They are foreign combatants. Until we started to deal with these individuals, there was no precedent for dealing with them. They wear no uniform and claim allegiance to no flag (e.g., not prisoners of war). They are religious zealots who will kill you if they get a chance. Several of those released have already returned to the fight. Anyone who supports their release has the blood of our new war dead on their hands. So, you want to put the balance of those whom we can’t release (because they are too dangerous) into prisons on US soil? If this does not present a problem to you, then you do not live in the real world. I do volunteer work in maximum security prisons, so I am aware of the environment. The terms malevolent, terrorist, pirate, and so many other descriptive terms, used to describe these individuals, and how they think, must mean nothing to you. If you will not accept them as a neighbor, then perhaps you should reconsider. The safety of the community, our children, and neighbors, means more to me than that. Evil men do exist. Evil prospers when good men stand by and do nothing.

          • JeffH

This TROLL should not be taken seriously. Her whole existance is to troll the site and twist the opinions of others by asking stupid questions, but never with answers. You will see her insist she was a Republican, throw the race card into the fray, and blame Bush for everything that is wrong right now. In referance to the GOP, she will use word like “we and us”. Her memory spans only 8 years. She has a bad habit of using the terms “hatred and hate”. She will defend Obama “to the death”,I think.
She has been exposed as the TROLL she is many time over, but like a puppy without a friend, she keeps coming back for more.

            Thanks for your knowledgable comments.

          • eyeswideopen

Warrat, like I said, we don’t have prison breaks, why wouldn’t they be contained in a top security prison? You are all paranoid, and you think there are different degrees of killing? The Okc,bomber is in a high security prison, is he less of a threat than other types of killers? You all are just so backward thinking. Dead is dead, killing is killing, and just because they come from a different country doesn’t mean we can’t contain them. Shame on you, for thinking that we aren’t competent. Are you saying our prison guards like terrorists and would let them escape? silly.

          • eyeswideopen

Warrant, so you live close to prison you work at? How could you put your children in such a risky situtation? You must not care.

        • JeffH

Shut up TROLL! You know nothing of what anybody thinks. Just your own defensless twisted mind.

          • eyeswideopen

Jeffie, calm down sweetie, no sense in getting all upset, you can’t silence me any more than you can silence the majority who now have your future in their hands.

          • eyeswideopen

Jeff, you should be proud, you and your buddies with the constant spewing of hate, socialism talk, threatening of civil war, etc, have turned me into one of you. I used to be nice, but then a post by a ex marine, who wanted to do harm to the Dems, drove me to the dark side and I started acting just like the rest of you. Have you ever gone back and read the posts? They are very ugly.

          • eyeswideopen

oops, I exited out accidentally, I would like to apologize to you if I let this get too personal. I know you are a good person.
Little info for you, did you know that Ca has larger population than Canada?

          • Thurman Marcum

            Jeff,

Eyes has got a right to voice her opinion. You are way out of line. This a democracy.Remember? You should apologize.

          • keith

it’s all that acid they did in the 60′s,they have frequent relapses.

        • Robert

What we use to do well is electrocutions. Cap and Trade killed that humane form of applying justice. Anyone have a wooden chair and some electric cables? I’ll supply the metal cauldron.

          • JeffH

Maybe Interstate would donate the batteries.

        • keith

a terrorist is a war crimes pow,NOT a normal person jailed for not paying his child support or driving on a suspended license.they are as bad as the nazis who ran the consintration camps,no different, they STARTED the war and killed 2000+ on the ATTACK on the world trade centers.when the japs hit pearl harbor we IMMEDIANTLY declared war on japan.they are PRISONERS OF WAR!get it!
they have no right to be locked up in a prison where they can spread their screwed up idiology further and make converts there.these animals will think nothing of blowing you up along with as many as they can take out, whether it be military or civilian targets,i was in beirut in 83 and saw first hand how whacked they are,i would as soon nuke em into oblivion!they are NOT soldiers in the normal sense of the word, they are deluded maniacs who would not think twice or bat an eye as they parked a car filled with explosives at a u.s mall or fair grounds and detonate it.they’re freakin ANIMALS who should’nt be given rights at all!they are no different from rudolph hess, ichmann, mingler, arafat, hussein, goebbles or any other psychopathic killers who have faced justice.

        • Thurman Marcum

          eyes,

Eyes don’t pay any attention to him.We have to have a good look at him, before he goes extinct. He is way out of line.

          • keith

pacifist weak willed appeasement will only make them spit in your face.c’mon yah can’t be THAT naive!

      • David

I’ve got some lead buckshot for them! Can’t use it for bird hunting anymore…..

    • ccg

Robin you have very valid reasons, and I agree with you wholeheartedly.
We already have so many illegals in our prison system, as well as Islamic believers who are converting our prisoners at an alarming rate. Islam is what most of the prisoners at GITMO practice, and it is NOT a peaceful religion.

    • eyeswideopen

Robin, it represents where we tortured and killed prisoners. It was the best recruiting tool the terrorists have. Don’t read much do you?

    • Robert

Close Gitmo and ship them all to Nancy Pelosi’s home and city. Then barb wire all of San Fran and let’s see what happens.

  • Mrs S C Thompson

Those prisoners have never had it sooo good!! We treat them to well.
They kill and torture their prisoners it is disgusting!!!

Leave them where they are we do not want them and they deserve no
special treatment. They do not wear uniforms so NOT eligible for the
Geneva Laws. That is nonsense they are terrorists. Thank you.

    • eyeswideopen

We also torture and kill our prisoner’s or haven’t you been reading and watching the news lately?

      • ccg

        Give us some examples.

        • JeffH

That is a novel question that won’t be answered.

          • eyeswideopen

wrong jeffie, I do read and keep up on things like torture and such. How about you?

        • eyeswideopen
          • ccg

Sure Eyes, like I am gonna believe the Guardian, which is the most LIBERAL of LIBERAL news (and I say that with a grain of salt) papers around. The 2 other sites wouldn’t come up.
Of course it does not matter to you that these people were throwing their feces on the American Soldiers. It doesn’t matter to you that these people were captured trying to kill our troops. With your liberal ideology, you would probably applaud them for it.
On 911 you were probably out dancing in the streets with the rest of the Muslims.

          • eyeswideopen

CCG, you are right, it doesn’t matter what they were doing, We do not torture nor do we kill our prisoners. This country has morals, ethics and is a nation of laws. Everyone keeps saying we are a Christian nation, well, Christians don’t intentionally inflict pain and suffering. That is what we are supposed to believe. We should be practicing our beliefs and not rationalizing why it is ok, to torture. When we do that, we open up our own soldiers to the same horrible treatment if they are captured.

          • eyeswideopen

CCG, sorry, I really am a repub and don’t know the liberal pubs. But I tried the third link and it worked just fine.

          • ccg

Eyes, I do agree that we shouldn’t torture. But some of the stuff they called torture isn’t torture. It’s not nice, but it’s not torture. Torture is the way they cut off our soldiers heads. They do it in a way that causes the most pain. Plus the fear that these men must have had knowing that they would not only cut their heads off, but show this to the world and to their families. Knowing my family would suffer over this would be the worst.
Water boarding, was only done to a few prisoners, and the men that did the water boarding had had it done to them so they would know what it felt like.
Some people, yes even Americans are just plain mean and enjoy seeing others suffer, but that doesn’t mean that all of our soldiers did or do this. Not all of our men and women in the military want to inflict pain or suffering on anyone. So not everyone tortures that is in charge at GITMO.
Our enemy does torture our military when caught anyway, no matter how nice we play. Sadly war is not you hit me and I hit you and you hit me back and I will hit you back.
War is cruel and hard, but sometimes it is necessary.
In Iraq they drained the lake called Lake Victory because it was stinking so bad. They found over 1300 bodies of young girls between the ages of 11 and 14 that Sadam and his sons had violated, tortured, killed, and then just threw their bodies in that lake.
My dh has met many Iraqi’s that have horror stories from the fate of Sadam. Plus the very training camps that the Iraqi police are using now, were terrorist training camps.
No, they did not find a lot of weapons of mass destruction, but they did find some. Unfortunately they do know that Sadam had time to get rid of them by sending them to other countries. They even had the routes he used and pictures of the convoys they used.

          • eyeswideopen

CCG. I searched the internet for an hour and couldn’t find where any of our soldiers have had their heads cut off. Did find civillan Nick Berg, in 2004, who did but couldn’t find anything on our soldiers. Could you please give me more info on your statement? Thx.

        • eyeswideopen

CCg. incase you need two sources.

          http://www.worldevolution.org/article/716

      • keith

you need to watch some reruns of 9-11 and refresh your memory!

  • Joe Carter

Now that Obama has gotten the Nobel prize for peace for proposing to close GITMO this presents a quandry for him and the Congress. As a former DOD contingency planner I know first hand that GITMO has been and can in the future be used for many purposes. So let’s ask Congress to keep GITMO open. We need public discussion on the issue. Obama is not a dictator, at least not yet!

    • ccg

Yeah, the Great O received the Nobel Peace Prize which has for the past what at least ten years has become a joke. It is VERY POLITICALLY CORRECT. Well, forcing someone to be politically correct is a way of controlling ones speach, and then trying to control our thoughts like Eyes tries to do.

      • Get it right.

CCG, I don’t try to control your thoughts, I only put out information to counter your statements. I can’t help it, if you don’t like the facts. You and some others on this site, don’t even want to acknowledge that this country belongs to everyone, just not your group of rt thinking. You are no more patriotic that the rest of us. What do you think, that only you and the Republicans love this country? Well, you are wrong. You might not like how or what I believe in, but I love this country just as much as you.

        • April

Are Eyes and GetItRight one and the same? Could she/he that desparate?

          • libertytrain

            always a possibility -

  • Warrant

I have never understood closing GITMO as meaning ‘giving the place back to Castro’s governement’. I sincerely hope this is not what is going to happen.

    • JeffH

Warrant, with Obama’s anti-American boss, George Soros, that is exactley what will happen if this clown is allowed to impose his socialist agenda on America. Fortunately, more and more people are understanding what this evil doer is up to, hence all the negative Obama comments. I am sure you know that “terrorists” have no timetable, but have a lot of time. This guy has just four years, so time is of the essence.

      • eyeswideopen

EVIL DOER?? Oh my God, Bush is back!!!!!!!!!!!! run for your lives, the saying will never die, the radicals are at a loss for words, so they are conjuring up the EVIL DOER mantra. LMAO

        • keith

dude, you really really need to lay off the shrooms man!

  • James Corbin

These people want to kill American people——Thinking that we are infidels. They don’t play by rules!

    • eyeswideopen

James, neither do we anymore. We violated our treaties, and killed our morals in one easy swoop, from Cheney’s goons. Let the investigations begin. Of course none of you will be able to admit that our Constitution was hijacked even after the facts come out. Bush is lucky, he has loyalty from drones who are blind.

      • ccg

Eyes, watch it, your hatred for the United States is showing again. If you did serve in the military which would really be a joke if you had, with your attitude, you wouldn’t have been very good at it.

        • Get it right.

CCG, you are new to this site, Eyes used to be very nice and considerate, something has happened within the last weak as, she no longer has the patience she used to exhibit. It was very nasty here lately with alot of gun talk. I am an old woman, who was stunned and a little frightened by the awlful things that were being said. She used to just prove the statements wrong, showing them the links, but everyday she started sounding more like them, dismissing people who didn’t agree with her, just like they did. “they” attacked her.It reminded me of a pack of dogs. Not one of them could accept that this country didn’t get in this shape because President Obama was elected. They refused to look back in history and try to learn. Seems as though their only goal is to slander and discredit their President. You can see the Republican talking points hard at work. But I digress, you are calling her a liar, when she said she served this country, have you called any men here a liar when they say they served? Who are you to do that? Nobody questions Dave when he stated he had 7 years of college, I wanted to ask him why so much, but that is kinda nosey. I am speaking up, as I have watched a person be attacked on this site, in a very unfair manner and it has changed them. Thank you for your attention but you have missed the really nasty statements made a couple of days ago.

          • JeffH

…If one can dish it out, then one dam n well better be able to take it. There is no innocent victim here.

          • ccg

Get it right, reread my post so you can get it right. I did not call her a liar.

  • James Corbin

Good–Warrant, for you. You said it like it should be told!!!!!!

  • Claire

I can remember what my Mother used to say—the Democrats are for the poor–the Republicans are for the rich. Republicans do not want health care reform and all of you should realize why. They OWE the insurance companies. Why don’t you ask a Republican senator what companies funded their campaigns? I think you would be amazed. They want the middle-class to pay for everything. They are against enything and everything that would help the American people. They are so full of hate that they cannot accomplish any good for America. And yes, they have always created wars. I have seen so many Republicans on TV–they never speak of any solutions for our problems. They spend their time and OUR money doing nothing but tsalking hate-filled drivel. Why don’t they grow up?

    • JeffH

You actually believe that spiel? My dear lady, not only do BOTH parties want your money to spend wrecklessly, The Dems throw it in your face and critisize you for complaining about it. Then they tell you that you don’t have any say in how they’ll spend it. All of this government distrust has been brewing for a long time, and with the cost of the war in the middle east, the economic downturn. When everything was rosie, nobody cared. This arrogance by our government has been going on for decades and each and every president has done their part to keep it going. Obama is no differant, except he wants his socialist/marxist ideas for this country. All of this isn’t just GW’s fault, it has been a bipartisan effort by all!
Fortunately, Americans are getting wise to him and his cronies.
YES WE CAN make changes in 2010 and 2012! Don’t know who is right for that change, but with some research, I’ll make my decisions wisely and hope others will do the same.

      • JeffH

Oh, back to GITMO. NO TERRORISTS ON AMERICAN SOIL! As far as I am concerned, waterboard every stinkin’ one of them at the Guantanamo Prison.

      • keith

        amen to that!

      • J,William

I just have to laugh at all jiber jaber here. It seems Rep’s want thiers and hell with the rest,”I got mine to bad for everyone else”. Dem’s want everyone to have thier share.but you must earn it by word, action,or deed. We as a society have to stop exspecting something for nothing. Both Dem’s and Rep’s and all others need to start working for the good of the country and not ther own agenda.Stop biulding thier own wealth. Make sure America’s wealth is strong first.Becuse if the USA is not strong the rest just won’t matter. I am a former Marine,1970-1980, I love my country right or wrong. If you come to me with a problem I will listen to you, but you better have a honest plan on how to resolve it not some B.S other wise your just another talking head with nothing between the ears.

    • ccg

Claire, You have not been listening to the truth then.

  • s c

The kook ultralibs are at it again. One efficient way to relieve pressure on prisons is to ‘farm them out’to interesting places like north korea or the south/north pole. But, that would save money and ultralibs couldn’t get any easy votes that way (no dead voters in north korea or either pole).
If comrade obama tries really hard, he can see to it that convicted felons can vote and ACORN could get re-energized. To comrade obama, a convicted felon isn’t a danger to society – he or she is just a misunderstood potential voter.
Never forget, ultralib kookoids claim to guard the nation’s moral compass. It must be hard to be immoral, and still claim to protect America’s morality at the same time. Can you say
    useful idiot, hypocritical LIARS?

    • Robert

s c I think you hit on something. OUTSOURCING!!! Yeah, that’s the ticket. Let’s outsource all the criminals and terrorists to India, Pakistan, and all those other coutries we’ve sent our jobs to. This way they could experience the American way. Work hard every day then get robbed or killed. We would have to also outsource our judges and ACLU lawyers to those countries. This way the robbers and killers rights would be protected.

  • Claire

As far as torture goes—-Does “an eye for an eye” sound familiar to you? While I do not believe in torture, you can bet that when U.S. soldiers are captured they are no doubt tortured. I agree, no terrorists on American soil. There are other ways……..
I hear some states are going to release prisoners (1000) because of the economy. This is going to be interesting. If this keeps up, we better not go out after dark. Daylight is going to be bad enough.
This is another reason for Congress to get a grip and work together quickly to get America safe and sound.

    • ccg

Claire, you have that right. Also, Congress is supposed to work for us, not themselves. They have forgotten this fact. We desperately need term limits.

    • JeffH

Thank you Claire. You obviously have an understanding about the necessity of keeping terrorists off of American soil, and what we are facing with early releases in our own prison system.

  • Claire

ccg: Term limits are very necessary but it will never happen. Do you think for one moment the politicians in our government would allow that to happen? No.
This summer I edited two different manuscripts on terrorism. They will be very interesting and informative books when published. The atrocities were unspeakable. The Islams committed horrible acts of torture against their own people and the Muslims. In one instance, Islams broke into this teacher’s home in the middle of the night, took him outside and tied his arms to one motorcyle and his legs to another motorcycle. Well, they literally split the teacher apart when the motorcycles took off. This type of murder is commonplace for Islams. They marry 6-year-old girls, abuse their wives to such an extent that the women cannot control their urine. I was aware that terrible acts were committed, I just did not realize how horrible these people are. The evil is astounding. I am against war, and I believe we should take care of America first, secure our borders, and not allow any individuals in that are questionable. I know we should help these people but sometimes these same people revert back to their old ways. My God, we would have to be in all of these types of countries on a full-time basis to prevent these atrocities. We cannot do it by ourselves. We need more soldiers and help from our allies. We cannot and should not do it by ourselves. We have helped many of these countries and now look at us. Our economy is shattered. We have been the world’s peacemaker and peacekeeper for so many years.
Now we owe China. What a mess we are in.

    • eyeswideopen

Claire, did you see news on Friday? 4 young men broke into house, using knives and killed a mother, 11 yr old girl had all of her toes cut off. Here’s a little background on the boys. 2 were 17, one 18 and the other 19. One was a home schooled Mormon, planning on becoming a missionary, one was an Eagle Scout, all had shaved heads and knew that they intended to kill the occupants in the home. This happened in Mont Vernon, New Hampshire. Yes, that happened right here in America. It happens every couple of days, but we are immune to our own atrocities, while pointing fingers at other countries. How about the security person, for well known Christian Speaker, who killed his wife and two sons, cause he wanted to marry his mistress in Tampa? He strangled them. People all over the world, can’t figure out why we commit such horrible crimes, for no reason.

      • JeffH

It is because humans are the most viscious mammals in existance. Humans have the ability to think, reason, feel emotions. Unfortunately, like other animals, they kill their own. It has happened continuously around the world, not just in the United States, and will continue until the end of life on earth. Everyone will be judged in the end.

      • keith

if just one of them in the residence would have been armed it would NOT have happened!

        • eyeswideopen

Keith, you missed the point. Yes the Muslims have some who torture, but right here in the US we have the same types of crimes. Until we are free of the horrible crimes we commit, we should not be pointing fingers and holding other countries to a higher standard.

      • jc

I had to read that post twice, they actually cut a 12 year old girls cute little toes off, that’s amazing. Poor girl (WORDS REMOVED FOR OFFENSIVE CONTENT)

  • Claire

    Whoops! I made a typo.

  • Claire

eyeswideopen:: I realize crime happens all over the world. America is supposed to be civilized and it isn’t. The crimes are unspeakable, and in a lot of cases the victms are killed by “upstanding people.” In Illinois, a guy killed an entire family, the husband, wife, and 3 kids and the toddler is still in the hospital in serious condition. This guy bludgeoned them to death. No guns, no knives, just beat them all to death. Now this creep’s brother has been arrested along with two women. As you said, for no reason! I can’t figure it out, either. The guys that did all these killings were supposed to be very nice guys, according to their neighbors and relatives. It is sad, sad. And scary.

  • Claire

All of this makes me think of the movie “2012″ and the writings of Nostradamus. Like JeffH says–this will continue until the end of time and all will be judged.
I wasn’t going to mention this but here it is—Another situation that really bothers me is the dogfighting rings. Where I live, there are numerous dogfights going on all the time in various areas. And it appears the police suipposedly cannot catch the creeps because they move around. I also hear the police “turn the other cheek” because at least people aren’t getting killed, just dogs. Dogs have been stolen right out of backyards and used for “bait.” Also, two kids had a pit bull, stole an old lady’s dog from her backyard–tied the poor dog to a telephone pole and let the pit bull have at it. Neighbors called the police but nothing was done about it. This just makes me sick. People like this should be put in jail. Oh, I forgot–our jails are overcrowded and criminals will be released to terrorize all over again. I cannot believe people choose to live the life of a criminal. A person has choices, regardless of a “rotten” childhood. My childhood was lousy but I certainly did not become a crimnal or a thief. I made a choice to live a good life and I am thankful that I have a good life.
I believe I have said enough on this subject. Sorry.

My adulthood coincided with the Vietnam war and I became aware that some people are bad in ways that citizens of the United States hopefully cannot imagine.

Because Switzerland is wary of its neighbors and takes suitable military and civic precautions, this small nation has maintained its independence for 700 years.

The United States needs to keep certain people, and their ideas, far away.

It’s been a few days since I added a reply. So why hasn’t GITMO been closed. Seems everything the President is putting forward has to be done yesterday or we’re in dire dodo. Let’s all contact our representatives and demand they close GITMO now and once that’s done then they can go ahead and do the rest of the stuff on their plate. My suggestion as to where they should be sent is right smack in the middle of the hoods in LA with a Tshirt that reads “LA Gangs are sissy girls in pink dresses”. An also have an ALCU lawyer next to each one so that their inherent right to free speech is protected.

we ought to ”release” them 20,000 feet over iran, not only would we be getting rid of them, but sending a clear message to iran!

Would we have to give them parachutes or could we give them those little chinese 10 cent made umbrellas as a substitute?

  • keith

allright,to be humane about it,i suppose we could go with the chinee umbrellas, see i have a concious.

or to be really nasty, tape a pork chop to their forheads, glue their eyelids open n make them watch barney vidios over and over and over, when they go totally bonkers(they’re already nuts anyways),then they will tell us all they know,i mean who can stand barney for hours without going nuts?then mercifully give them the chinee umbrellas and drop em over iran.
