Jurors View Photos Of Nursing Home Victims

CARTHAGE, N.C., Aug. 9 (UPI) — Jurors at the North Carolina trial of a man accused of killing eight nursing home residents were shown graphic crime scene photographs by prosecutors.

Family members of the victims sobbed while a sheriff’s deputy explained each of the photos he took to document the deaths at the Pinelake Health & Rehabilitation Center in Carthage, N.C., the Fayetteville (N.C.) Observer reported Tuesday.

Robert Kenneth Stewart, 47, is on trial on eight counts of first-degree murder for the shooting deaths that occurred March 29, 2009.

Stewart has admitted to the shootings but his lawyers argue he was under the influence of prescription drugs, including the sleep aid Ambien, and was not in control of his actions.

Among the photographs the jury saw at Monday’s proceedings was one of 78-year-old John Goldston slumped over in his motorized wheelchair after being hit at close range with birdshot pellets.

The trial is in its second week of testimony.
