Judge: N.Y. Mom Who Killed Children Can’t Collect Their Benefits

NEW YORK (UPI) — A State judge ruled Wednesday a Long Island, N.Y., mother who admitted killing her three children can’t benefit from the wrongful death settlements.
In court papers, Leatrice Brewer, 33, said she deserves the wrongful death money given to her children’s $350,000 estate by Nassau County. WNBC, New York, said she argued she was entitled to the money because she was found not guilty because of mental illness.
Brewer has been confined at a psychiatric hospital in upstate New York, where she has delivered a fourth child, father unknown.
A lawyer representing Innocent Demesyeux, who is the father of two of the children Brewer killed five years ago, said she can’t be allowed to make money off their deaths, the report said.
Surrogates Court Judge Edward McCarty agreed.
“It is one thing to say that the State should not imprison one who was insane when she committed the murder,” WNBC reported McCarty said in court. “It is quite another to say that the insane murderer can financially profit from her crime.”
