Jobless Claims Drop To 400,000

WASHINGTON, Aug. 4 (UPI) — First-time jobless benefit claims dropped to 400,000 in the week ending Saturday with 1,000 fewer claims than the previous week, the Labor Department said.
The four-week rolling average for claims filed was 407,750, a drop of 6,750 from the previous revised average, the department said Thursday.
In the week ending July 23, there were 18 states where initial claims for unemployment benefits decreased by at least 1,000.
In California, 23,689 fewer claims were filed. In New York, 8,035 fewer claims were filed. North Carolina had the third largest decline with 7,511 fewer filings.
Nationally, the unemployment rate in June was 9.2 percent. The Labor Department issues its closely-watched monthly employment situation report Friday.
