JFK’s Bomber Jacket Sells For $629,000

AMESBURY, Mass., (UPI) — A Massachusetts auction house said President John F. Kennedy’s Air Force One bomber jacket exceeded expectations by selling for $629,000.

John McInnis Auctioneers said the jacket, which bears a patch with the presidential seal, was expected to sell for $20,000 to $40,000 at Sunday’s auction, but it instead sold for $629,000, including the 18 percent buyer’s premium, CNN reported Monday.

The jacket was part of a cache of items found by the family of David Powers, a close friend and special assistant to Kennedy. The items auctioned Sunday also included Kennedy family photographs from the 1930s, working copies of a foreign policy speech, signed letters from the president to his parents and a 1963 birthday card to Kennedy signed by his then-toddler son, John Jr.

Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas Nov. 22, 1963. This year marks the 50th anniversary of his death.
