James Anderson Remembered In Candlelight Vigil

JACKSON, Miss., Aug. 15 (UPI) — Hundreds of people attended a vigil to remember James Craig Anderson, a black man allegedly run down by a white teenager, officials in Mississippi said.

The vigil Sunday in the parking lot of the Metro Inn, where Anderson, 49, was allegedly run down June 26, attracted people of all ages and colors, the Jackson (Miss.) Clarion-Ledger reported.

Deryl Dedmon of Brandon was being held on an $800,000 bond, charged with murder. Witnesses said Dedmon used a racial slur against Anderson after the incident.

Religious and community leaders told the crowd hate is not an answer to personal differences.

“The people of God should rise up and say, ‘That’s not who we are,'” the Rev. Chip Henderson of Pinelake Church said. “A great injustice has been done, and as a people of justice, forgiveness, love and hope, we can’t just sit back and let something like this happen.”

Beth Israel Congregation Rabbi Valeri Cohen said: “Love is a better way to live. We’re here to get beyond the hatred.”
