Iran, U.S. Officials Both In Talks With Taliban

Iran, worried that new U.S. negotiations with the Taliban will lead to Western troops remaining in Afghanistan beyond 2014, is working to fuel anti-American sentiment in the region and build its own ties with Taliban leaders.

According to The Washington Post, the Iranian plan involves forging closer relations with the Taliban, funding politicians and media for propaganda, and expanding cultural ties in Afghanistan. As the United States seeks to engage in peace talks with the Taliban, the Iranians are taking a similar strategy to the one they took in Iraq preceding the 2011 troop drawdown.

The United States has far more leverage in Afghanistan than it did in Iraq, because the Afghans are expected to remain dependent on foreign aid for years. The Administration of President Barack Obama hopes to use the dependence to keep troops in the country beyond 2014.

With both Iran and the USA talking to the Taliban trying to get them to take sides could and will bite us in the butt. What is wrong with the way we lived 5 years ago? We have a president in office that doesn’t care where he brings us as long as his friends get the bennies. Solyndra, was a big ole mistake, so why not drill for oil, why not put in the pipeline that will give us more oil. This President doesn’t care about the American people like past Presidents. i for one will not vote for this man, Hillary Clinton, for sure, but as she isn’t running i will vote Republican.

I totally agree with you. This President does not deserve to be in this or should I say “OUR” White House. I firmly believe that he is and will always be a LIAR and a CHEAT. He does not deserve one vote form the American people.

the people have spoken, they want an unqualified person for president because they wanted change and if we as people of common sense don’t watch out and vote this bum out he will be here for another four years.I don’t want to move to another country but hey maybe the ussr is better now.

Hiliary Clinton is just as bad a Hussein Obama. She is closely tied to George Soros and she is not a saviour…she is the enemy…she is trying to get a UN Resolution passed to take our guns…she is a NEW WORLD ORDER person along with hubbie Slick Willie ….do some invesgitations and you will find this out for yourself. As far as Afghanistan, clear out and briing our guys home. Bin Laden is gone and so is Hussein…our mission was to get them….mission accomplished…allow Afghanistan and the rest of these nutwads continue to do what they have done for centuries and that is to destroy each other. Bring our guys back and control who is coming into America and protect our shores and allow these people to continue their annhiliation of each other.

In effect it is nothing more than a political poker game. Taliban is the grand pot sitting in the middle of the table and you have but two players – the U.S. and Iran. Who has the most chips to keep tossing in?. Why do you think they’re going to place a major sanction of the Iranian central bank? Do they really care what the end result may be? Very doubtful. It’s all a matter of who can win the pot and in turn win extra political points for the game that’s being pulled on all of us. Get it?

Sam, the most significant part of your article is in the last paragraph. The idea that The Anointed Manchurian Candidate plans to use ‘dependence’ to get what he wants is not at all meaningless or trivial. In effect, it shows Obummer to be exactly who AND what he is. What he’s doing is exactly the SAME thing that a drug pusher does to keep an addict under his thumb.
Remember, people, we have a pretender who is proud to give America ‘hope and change, transparency, ethics, compassion, character, world-class leadership, genius,’ and the best government that
money and corruption can buy – WHETHER WE WANT IT OR NOT.

  • Gringo Infidel

This inexperienced idiot in the W.H. will let the Taliban open an ‘embassy’ next.

    What a travesty.

Don’t be such a simpleton in your answers and phony assumptions. Iran has had influence with Western Afghanistan long before our war started. Iran has been trading and doing business with Herat Province and that Provence relies more on Iran than the Afghan government. We trade with Canada and Mexico and Iran trades with Afghanistan and Turkey. You need to open that shutter on your mind and get a clearer picture of how the world works.

    • brianS

Right on with this statement. Opening an embassy is probalby part of the negotiations. Did Obama write fairy tale stories before coming into office, if not he should.

For some reason the leaders of countries that are the cause of aggression seem to have an immunity under some ancient international code of chivalry. They invoke the aggression and start a war. They send out tens of thousands of their citizens on the battlefields to die at their direction. Thousands of soldiers will die on both sides and the winner will punish the leaders with war crimes. It is time to change the rules and save tens of thousands of lives on both sides. Target and kill the leaders of aggression are the most sensible answer! We are doing that now with the drone attacks on Al Qaida leaders. Its time for an American President to get personal with leaders who have intentions of doing harm to our country and make the fight between the heads of state rather the sacrificial slather of thousands. We have the technology to take out individual targets any place on this planet even if they hide underground. War is dirty so lets clean the source of the dirt first?

The United States is so misguided if they think the Taliban will do anything different regardless of who wins the “pot in the middle of the table.” I can not believe that we provide money to EVERY country in the region and they treat us as if we are a “red headed step child.” Hillary has given the farm away in addition to the billions of aide already given to this area of the country and they still demand more or threaten to turn against us. TURN AGAINST US? You mean they have been for us over the last 10 years … oh boy, we are so, so, so stupid!!!! What you want to bet that the United States if not totally at least partially fund that Taliban Embassy! WHEN ARE WE GOING TO WAKE UP. Get our troups OUT OF THERE and let those people fight among themselves. We have fought there for 10 years and NOTHING has changed. Why do we think we are going to change thousands of years of history because we are so mighty … poppycock! WE WILL NEVER WIN A POLITICAL WAR …. Korea … Vietnam … Afganistan … Iraq … Lybia …. Egypt. What a horrible waste of fine, young Americans. Everyone should be embarrassed to face the family of any soldier that has died in those conflicts … a total waste!

  • chuckb

rough and ready, you got my vote. you are right it all started with the korean war and we were not allowed to win in any of them. it would be hard to face losing your loved ones in conflicts such as these. all for naught.
