Internet Freedom Is In Danger

Internet Freedom Is In Danger
PHOTOS.COM

Americans are likely going to see the Federal government take greater control over the Internet in the near future if the increasingly frequent “wolf” cries from officials about the threat of a cyberattack are any indicator.

On Oct. 15, Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said the United States faces a “Cyber-Pearl Harbor” which could cripple the Nation’s vital infrastructure during a speech to a number of national security experts in New York. He said that America is in a pre-9/11 moment and could implement the security measures now to avoid a cyber-catastrophe that could potentially shut down technology across the country.

Halfway through last week, minor cyber-attacks on Capital One Financial Corp. and BB&T Corp. temporarily prevented some customers of the companies to view personal banking information. U.S. officials promptly blamed the attacks on Iranian government-backed groups.

With all of the talk about cyberspying and cyberattacks against the United States, government is undoubtedly gearing up to implement a series of controls on the Internet by Presidential fiat to expand its control.

Unfortunately for American Internet users, the controls will likely be the online equivalent of the civil liberties-destroying policies put in place via the Patriot Act and the Department of Homeland Security following 9/11.

The U.S. government, to the dismay of many Internet freedom advocates, has already been involved in the seizure of domain names and entire websites, claiming copyright laws had been violated. And in San Francisco last year, officials suspended cellphone and social network access to pre-empt a protest of police brutality. Occupy Wall Street protestors also had their Twitter accounts hacked so that government officials could learn more about that protest movement.

When Congress attempted to pass laws earlier in the year — the Stop Online Privacy Act (SOPA), tha Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA), the Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act (CISPA), and Preventing Real Online Threats to Economic Creativity and Theft of Intellectual Property Act (PROTECT IP) — to gain more government control over the Internet, public outcry quashed the initiatives. More talk from the Department of Defense about Internet security means that the President may soon pass a similar measure with no way for the public to stop it.

If the government was truely concerned about security it would be helping the railroads, utility companies, financial institutions, etc. develop more effective firewalls and anti virus programs. That would do more to solve the supposed problem than anything else. Since the government is instead seeking ever greater control of the internet and thus the free flow of information it is logical to conclude they want to prevent said free flow.

    • GALT

Kinda looks like the same thing……..but depending on your position regarding government services………government help means the use of government money…………do you think
Warren Buffet needs help from the government? All the industries you’ve mentioned….
with the exception of the remaining actual “public utilities” are already ripping you off, both as a consumer and as a taxpayer…………

And your paranoia is interesting but overstated……..what “information” are you concerned about? That someone will interrupt “sites” like this?

      Not likely……

      • OneGuess

Your posts are consistently bloviating foolishness. You must be so proud…

      • GALT

Amazing how asking questions attracts the intellectually impoverished…….who are eager to demonstrate just how stupid they really are…….

      • Warrior

Hey Galt, how much do you think the gubmint could charge for one of those “membership” cards to shop at the gubmint store? I hear they have more items now than Walmart.

      • GALT

What did you want to buy? Everything is pretty much for sale, it’s only a matter of price.

      • DaveH

The pretentious Galt is a legend in his own mind — due to space limitation, a very small legend.

      • GALT

and they just keep doing it……….such persistence….well at least the government knows where you are………threat level “non existent”………

      • Warrior

The amazing aspect of this thought is that the majority of people that really caused the crash are still holding public office.

    • eddie47d

Once again lines are drawn and we stubbornly choose sides because that is what is expected of us. Are these attempted laws a ruse or are they needed in any aspect? We are a technological nation and any sabotage of our communication network would cripple our economy as if it isn’t wrecked enough. China has hacked in our data system and stolen property (Protect IP or ACTA) Should they have the “freedom” to do so even if American companies lose out? Cybercrime can be far more deadly to businesses than someone shop lifting an I-Pad off of their showroom floor. What’s the compromise that is best for business and the nation? If the USA is going to “get tough” on China and other countries who is going to be doing that? Should intellectual property rights be protected, should an individuals right be protected from cyber bullying or should those cyber hackers and bullies get a free pass? Almost every American product has been cloned (copied, stolen) around the world and we as a nation keep losing out. Why make it easier for these countries to take from us? Could it be that millions of American jobs and potential future jobs are lost so how would that be serving the individuals best interest or our economy?

      • GALT

It’s all a question of balance……..crashing this economy doesn’t really make any sense for anyone……..even to the idiots who almost did it by accident.

All the rest is just human nature…….and greed……..supply/demand/price……..if profit margins are unreasonable, and the product can be produced for less……..someone will do it there is sufficient motivation……….

Free to use the CB radio

    • Chester

May be free now, but when I was on the air, was a twenty five dollar license fee for a five year license. It went as high as seventy five dollars for that same license before they decided was easier just to let it run wide open and essentially unregulated. Still no more than four watts output power, and antenna height limited to twenty feet above the supporting structure, but no license fee. Ham radio talks farther, but you have to pass a set of tests to get that license, and I won’t speak as to any charges.

  • Warrior

Ah yes, I think I just found the “next war”. The U.N. is right on this one. It just needs to be taxed. Those filthy millionaires and billionaires.

  • Dwight Mann

Take away the freedom of information, and you will have calamity. You have been warned. Only a dictatorship limits free reign of information. . .

    • eddie47d

What information can’t you find today that you had access to yesterday? Only a foolish reckless government would allow so much cyber theft to occur and not do anything about it. Economic calamity will be certain if this continues so there are two sides to this equation. To keep individual rights intact while equally protecting that same individual from cyber bullying (hacking) or theft from foreign governments. There are many underground and above ground operations around the world stealing from America. The Internet has made it so much simpler to do so.

      • DaveH

Who do you think you’re kidding, Eddie? Theft has always been illegal (except when Government does it). They don’t need any special laws to prosecute people for theft.
The attempted Internet rules are for one reason only — to allow Government to intimidate and shut down those whose messages they don’t approve. Fortunately the majority of people are smart enough not to fall for your Liberal Progressive nonsense as evidenced by the 99% who DON’T support SOPA:
        http://www.opencongress.org/bill/112-h3261/show

      • eddie47d

Preventing theft is also legal or else there wouldn’t be a second amendment to stop the home invaders. Your narrow mind just became narrower Dave.

      • Robert Smith

From David H: “to allow Government to intimidate and shut down those whose messages they don’t approve. ”

What if the right in America wants to limit information about abortion, as it does in schools?

What if the right in America wants to limit information about medical pot, as it has done?

What if the right wants to limit information about gods other than their own brutal one?

The extreme right in America has a proven track record of censorship.

  • Bill

The internet is still a free open marketplace and the government wants their piece of the pie. It is not about security, it is about money.

    • Nadzieja Batki

It is not about money even if that is a pretext to control the internet. All the information about people who write articles and post on the sites is already known and we have already established our “signatures” by how we write and what we write. Depending who is in charge of a country then they have fears of any who have contrary views of them.

    • TIME

      Dear Bill,

      Your post is partly correct, Yes ~ money is the side game but as these special people “control the making of said money,” ~ thus they are in fact { the money changers.}

But their TRUE goal is total ” TOTAL ~ CONTROL” of all thinking, all behavior patterns, as well all Belief systems.

Thus its the arm of the One World Government by way of “the New World Order” of what BTW ~ is not new in any way shape or form, ~ To enslave you mind and SOUL.

We still have the internet open to us, as well the second amendment, ~ of what as I noted a months back you would start seeing more and more killings all in the name of taking away your guns.
And thats going to be the first order of business when these elections are over and it will all come to pass.

After that people, ~ its over, ~ you don’t have long, ~ so think long and hard about what your options are….

Peace and Love be with you

“It is not about security, it is about money.”

NO! It is all about CONTROL !!

  • Tammy

This article is out-dated. The President issued an executive order on this already on July 6 of this year since SOPA did not pass. It is already in place. See: http://www.whitehouse.gov/the-press-office/2012/07/06/executive-order-assignment-national-security-and-emergency-preparedness. Here is a link to a clear discussion of this order: http://godfatherpolitics.com/6180/obama-signs-executive-order-giving-him-and-federal-government-control-of-all-forms-of-communication-under-any-circumstance/ Please read this link. It is very clear and to the point of the threat we face. The NS/EP referenced in this executive order was created in Section 3 of the March 16 Executive Order National Defense Preparedness that can be found at: http://www.whitehouse.gov/the-press-office/2012/03/16/executive-order-national-defense-resources-preparedness There is a precedent for this executive order; however, it has previously been issued during times of war or threat of war (think Cold War), but it was not this all-encompassing. The only thing required for this to be instated was for President Obama to issue a state of National Emergency, which he did on June 25 with regard to Russia and land owned by Russia for uranium. See: http://www.whitehouse.gov/the-press-office/2012/06/25/executive-order-russian-highly-enriched-uranium for more information.

Please read sections: 102; Part II, Section 201; and Section 502 especially carefully, if you have no time to read it in total. The Executive Order National Defense Resources Preparedness gives the government full authority over every aspect of our lives, including our property. This authority will be given to non-elected cabinet members of the Executive Branch. Furthermore, this Executive Order allows for the conscription of unpaid labor, to whit from Section 502, “The head of each agency otherwise delegated functions under this order is delegated the authority of the President under sections 710(b) and (c) of the Act, 50 U.S.C. App. 2160(b), (c), to employ persons of outstanding experience and ability without compensation and to employ experts, consultants, or organizations.”

The recent “Executive Order from the President regarding Authorizing the Implementation of Certain Sanctions Set Forth in the Iran Threat Reduction and Syria Human Rights Act of 2012 and Additional Sanctions with respect to Iran.” While I agree with our sanctions against Iran and that we should enforce those sanctions regarding anyone who would be funneling funds or other assets to Iran, I do not agree with the President generating law. Furthermore, this EO provides no due process of law should one be innocent of charges, there is no court hearing on the issue, but rather the findings of the Secretary of State and Secretary of Treasury on their own accord. This could be potentially be used to take out any enemy of the Administration on trumped up charges of collusion with Iran for which there is no recourse.

    • DaveH

Congress is the law-making branch. The Executive Branch has no law-making authority. Executive Orders are binding only upon Agencies of the Executive Branch. It’s time that we the people start insisting that Government obey the Main Law of the Land — The Constitution:
      http://www.cato.org/pubs/pas/pa358.pdf

      • GALT

Your absolutely right Dave, the Executive Branch has NO AUTHORITY over the branches of congress that are responsible for this.

      • independant thinker

“The Executive Branch has no law-making authority. Executive Orders are binding only upon Agencies of the Executive Branch.”

Actualy it does DaveH. The reason it does is, constitutional or not Congress, the courts, and most important the people have let it happen.

    • TIME

      Dear Tammy,

Let me be quite clear so as to not Babylon / Confuse / Confound ~ you with political rhetoric, (( all ~ Excutive Law / Fiat, )) ~ is the law of a ” DICTATORSHIP.”

      Thus it makes no differance if it were any of the OMENS be they a Bush or Obama, or a Clinton or whom ever. you still live under a { “dictarorship” }

Want to change it to something Positive and Beautiful?

Then we all have to toss out all that is ~~ and start all over again, ~ but this TIME perhaps place safeguards so that this can never happen again. as in ~ NO MONEY, ~ No MONEY CHANGERS, thus ~ NO POLITICAL GAINS for only the few.

Peace and Love be with you

      • vicki

Since money is nothing more than a convenient commodity to allow barter to be efficient I wish you good luck in getting rid of it. Now should you happen to be wanting to get rid of paper “money” and go with gold & silver coin (and redeemable paper IOU’s) then you would retain the benefit of the efficiency of barter without the ability of one small group to counterfeit (look up the word and note the “lesser value” part of the definition.) paper money just because they are the government choice printer.

The rest of the problems you imply with money are easier dealt with by eliminating the “central banks” (I.E. the Federal Reserve).

      • TIME

        Dear Vicki,

The money issue will come to its end quite soon, and ~ that will bring about the next step in the NWO’s bag of tricks,

If you take a few moments and reflect on my post, what you will find is I am looking past the { up coming events } at that point the NWO will have removed mass swaths of humans from the face of the earth.

Thus when the TRUE Light of YAH comes ~ money will not be needed.
Please ~ Forgive me if I was not as clear as I should have been.

JFTR, the { Ancient Egyptians never used money, nor did the Sumerians} with the Egyptians they went for nearly 3000 years with out a war nor any person within the nation starving ~~ all with out money ~ Just “Benevolent Rulers” who took care of their flock.
Let alone ~ there were few was’s as with war the “RULER” was the lead of the charge,
        not sitting on their ass in the White House ~ thus when this type of platform of leadership was the call of the day, {{ Rulers took great care as to not make war .}}

Peace and Love, be with you.

At the end of the article it stated that the President may soon pass—, how does the Presidend “pass” something?

    • TIME

      Dear Doug,

Its called { Executive Law / FIAT } ~~ AKA ~ in other words like a “DICTATOR”

As all { Executive laws } are in fact nothing more ~ and nothing less than ~ laws by way of a “DICTATORSHIP”.

      Is that clear enough?

      Peace and Love

    • http://www.facebook.com/kenneth.oliver.397 Kenneth Oliver

Is that a rhetorical question? I would say executive order, as he tends to do with any bills that threaten our rights. Whether congress knows about it or not, it will automatically become law after 30 days if not contested. Look up internet kill switch. You might have to weed through to find more reliable sources but you’ll get there. Of course, if you are a liberal, you’ll discount this entirely. I’m not trying to start a fight, I’m just saying. That’s the experience I get. I’ve read of it and it has been mentioned by personnel close to Obama. I forget her name – Jarrett, maybe? No, I’m not lying.

So glad Personal Liberty went back to the old system of posting comments. The new one was below PL standards in my opinion. You have spoiled us rotten, Mr. Livingston.

    • http://boblivingstonpl.wordpress.com Bob Livingston

      Dear moonbeam,

We were forced to change back because the new system failed. We are still looking for a system that allows for real-time comment posting and hope to have one in place soon that is up to PL standards.

      Best wishes,
      Bob

Without china we would not get our 20 dollar jordan knock offs, and rolex watches, and dvds and software.

the fed and the federal govt have been trashing the economy for decades now, deliberately as far as i can tell, our european friends have been warning us off it even our good buddy tony blair about as pro usa as you could find in the EU had scolded bush jr on it many times.

Our nation dictating international internet law usually at the barrel of a gun or economic threats, has been going on for awhile, seizing even domains that had nothing to do with piracy and money laundering.

And they want more “power” imagine that.

eddie-galt: I thank you for the insights of a truly dumbed downed populous.

  • http://na Mike in NE

balance, human nature, greed, idiots…….galt you are so amazing in your own mind..enjoy yourself and your infinite wisdom.

    • GALT

So, Mike how are things in the federal district of NE?

Meanwhile…..( in the news……. for some of us )

For more than a century, the Supreme Court has recognized something called “first-sale doctrine.” That means you can resell copyright material that you bought without compensating the copyright holder. Or it did, until Supap Kirtsaeng came along.

Kirtsaeng came from Thailand to the United States in 1997 to study at Cornell. He was taken aback by the price of textbooks, knowing they were much cheaper in his native land. So he had his relatives buy them back home and ship them to him.

Then he realized this could be a very profitable line of work: Family members bought books in bulk and shipped them to him, and he sold them on eBay — hauling in more than $1.2 million, according to court documents.

John Wiley & Sons sued Kirtsaeng for copyright infringement… and so far has prevailed. Last year. a federal appeals court held that anything made overseas is not subject to the first-sale doctrine — only American-made products or “copies manufactured domestically.”

This example would cover the first three elements of your analytical description

      balance, human nature, greed .

While the following information represents the simplest path to escape from the
supposedly “unconstitutional tyranny” that you all come to complain about on
      a daily basis………

      http://www.supremelaw.org/authors/freeman/freeman4.htm

which you not only ignore…….but in some cases actively denigrate……imagining yourselves and this site to be a hotbed of revolutionary fervor that would attract
the governments attention and concern to the point of having to shut it down.

For the GOVERNMENT, those “watching” you ( and this is highly unlikely ) the reality
is that you are a bunch of idiots “full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.”

You may rest easy Mike…….”hurry before they shut it down”, has no credible application
to anything you may see here……..

“To conquer, first DIVIDE!” ( and then HANG, separately. )

People have learned good things and bad things from the Internet. The Internet also shows how a person can make bombs and other incidious items. I have mixed thoughts concerning the Internet. Society can be described as the good, the bad, and the ugly. This will continue until the end of the earth.
