India Reformer Ends Hunger Strike

NEW DELHI, Aug. 28 (UPI) — An Indian political activist announced the end of his hunger strike Sunday after Parliament passed a law toughening anti-corruption rules.

Anna Hazare, 74, downed a cup of coconut water in New Delhi Sunday to officially end his 13-day protest.

The Financial Times said Hazare’s hunger strike appeared to have shocked Parliament members, who this weekend passed legislation appointing anti-corruption ombudsmen in Indian states and subjecting lower-echelon bureaucrats to greater scrutiny.

Hazare said after the vote he would lead a campaign for electoral reforms that would make it easier for India’s voters to push corrupt politicians out of office.
