Imagine There’s No Internet

January 27, 2012 by

Motivated citizens block new law. Well, what do you know? Two bills aimed at stopping online piracy were supposed to sail through Congress. But Internet giants Google and Wikipedia and others protested that the measures would turn them into “police officers for the Justice Department.” Wikipedia even went dark for a day. So many people contacted their Congressmen that the Stop Online Piracy Act and the Protect IP Act are dead in the water — at least for now.

College conservatives “too patriotic.” A group of students at Marietta College in Ohio wanted to hold an American flag memorial and candlelight vigil to commemorate 9/11. They received approval, but then the approval for the vigil was rescinded and they were told that the flag garden had to include flags from the more than 90 other countries that experienced a loss on 9/11. A Student Life representative said, “We have a global outlook at this school and we cannot ignore the Chinese and Muslim students who also suffered losses.” Ultimately, the college allowed the students to host the event and it funded the purchase of the other countries’ flags.

One reason California is going broke. When Berkeley city manager Phil Kamlarz retired from his $242,580 a year job on Nov. 30, he immediately became eligible for an annual pension of $249,420 a year. He also got $147,439 in unused sick and vacation time. The city’s pensions are underfunded. Covering future retirees will cost the city some $400 million. That’s a lot of taxpayer money!

Moody’s downgrades Illinois’ debt. Moody’s downgraded Illinois State debt from A2 to A1 — the lowest among the 50 States. Remember when Illinois raised personal income taxes by 67 percent and corporate income taxes by 46 percent a year ago? Those tax increases were supposed to solve all of the State’s financial problems. Despite the increases, Governor Pat Quinn’s budget office predicts a $507 million deficit this year.

What is to be done about the thieves who are stealing on the internet?

        Hey Robert S.:

They already have laws on the books that address pirating and copyright infringments. It’s just that sometimes the fine is inappropiate and miniscule compared to the agreigence. It should be, if you make a million stealing it you should be fined a million, plus make restitution for court costs and lawyer fees. And of course, shut down the site. SOPA, PIPA, and ACTA try to eliminate that process and allows for unlimited censorship control by the government without due process. It’s a direct violation of the Magna Carta, and the U.S. Constitution. The foundation of modern civilizations laws.

If I am not mistaken, there are already laws on the books that take care of these acts….we just need the DOJ and law enforcemtnt of the government to do their job….we don’t need any more CONTROL from this administration….we need to do away with the CONTROL they have already enacted. Believe me, this was not an act against piracy…it was an act to control speech and everything else on the internet. Do not trust your government, they lie.

That’s what police and courts of law are for. If they can crack down on kiddie porn, they can surely capture those who steal intellectual property.

Sacrificing freedom for the sake of the greater good is never the answer. For every one person whose intellectual property is protected, a million will have their freedoms infringed upon who are guilty of no crime whatsoever.

The government needs to just keep its dirty little fingers out of the internet pie. Let them have even one slice and before you know it we’ll be paying postage on emails, and sites like this one might be blocked because of the content that stirs up people’s passion against an encroaching government.

There was an old saying in the 60′s POWER TO THE PEOPLE and that is even more true today. The defeat of SOPA is proof that the people can have power. Now let’s keep working on NDAA and the Patriot Act.

      • APN

        ….and don’t forget OBAMA.

  • Kerry

Mitt Romney’s father was born in Mexico so he can’t run for office(same reason obama can’t have office)so it is time to look at the Constitution and start obeying it or we need another civil war to reinstate it by blood of all liberals!

    • Gary

Here we go again back on that parents kick!

“Article II, Section 1, Clause 5 of the US Constitution States: No Person except a natural born Citizen, or a Citizen of the United States, at the time of the Adoption of this Constitution, shall be eligible to the Office of President; neither shall any Person be eligible to that Office who shall not have attained to the Age of thirty five Years, and been fourteen Years a Resident within the United States.”

There is nothing in there that says anything about the parents. No one wants to see Obama removed from office more than I do but reading between the lines is not the way to do it. All that will accomplish is to bring us down to his level. Until someone gets concrete proof of his alleged African birth and has the brass ones to expose it, we are stuck with him until, at least, 2012. That is unless someone has the brass ones to present an air tight case for a successful impeachment and removal.

We can argue the fine points about eligibility of Obama and Romney until the cows come home. I have heard the argument that, at the time the Founding Fathers wrote the Constitution, it was said that the definition of a Natural Born Citizen was a person born of two parents who are Natural Born Citizens. Unfortunately, they did not add that definition in the Constitution. At the time that Mitt was born in Detroit, both his parents were American citizens. That qualifies him as a Natural born Citizen. That precedent was set back in 1881 with the election of President Chester Arthur. His father was not a natural born citizen, but was a US Citizen at the time of Chester Arthur’s birth. I am not a Romney fan by any stretch of the imagination but he does qualify to be President whether we like it or not. The bottom line is that Obama is in the White House weather we like it or not because, through apathy or ignorance, the American People allowed it to happen. Apathy put Obama in the White House and apathy will put him back in there. As I have said many times and I will say it again. APATHY IS THE GREATEST THREAT TO OUR LIBERTIES AND FREEDOMS. NOT OBAMA.

Best most factual post I’ve read in a long while!

      • Alex Frazier

Obama is not eligible to be president. I don’t care about any of the particular arguments. The fact is, the man spent upwards of $2 million fighting to not present his long form birth certificate. No one spends that kind of money fighting such a petty formality unless they have something to hide. There isn’t a legitimate licensed driver anywhere in the United States who hasn’t presented his or her birth certificate voluntarily to the DMV. The idea that someone would fight not to show it when occupying the office of president of the United States is absurd.

People have been convicted of murder on weaker circumstantial evidence than this.

  • William Baylor

Moron, its not where your father was born, it’s whare you were born! They were both born in America! Duh, get yourself an education you Republican moron!

    • WilliamWallace

William Baylor, Kerry’s comments are valid, for arguments sake, because “natural born citizen” is defined by many constitutional experts to mean a person who is born in the US to parents who were also born in the U.S. Instead of insulting him, you should have used your brain and researched the topic first because now you look like a hot-tempered moron with an below average government school education…

Are you “of Bruce”? OK that’s my joke. But to get to the “citizen thang”. Now I don’t have a copy of the Constitution on hand, so I probably will be corrected also. Article 14 stipulates: If your born to parents that are natural born, or Nationalized, or Under the Jurisdiction thereof, you shall be a Citizen of the U.S. Of course Nationalized means you became a citizen through the process. Under the Jurisdiction Thereof means you are here “legally” and are under the jurisdiction of this country’s laws. If you are not here legally it is argued by many that you are not under the jurisdiction thereof. That’s why there is the issue of “Anchor Babies”. Some believe as I do that these “Anchor Babies” do not earn the citizenship they claim.

The Naturalization Act of 1790, “And the children of citizens of the United States [...] shall be considered as natural born citizens: Provided, that the right of citizenship shall not descend to persons whose fathers have never been resident in the United States”

Minor v. Happersett, “The Constitution does not in words say who shall be natural-born citizens. Resort must be had elsewhere to ascertain that. At common law, with the nomenclature of which the framers of the Constitution were familiar, it was never doubted that all children born in a country of parents who were its citizens became themselves, upon their birth, citizens also. These were natives or natural-born citizens, as distinguished from aliens or foreigners. Some authorities go further and include as citizens children born within the jurisdiction without reference to the citizenship of their parents. As to this class there have been doubts, but never as to the first.”

In a 2008 presidential debate, Obama plainly declared that his father comes from Kenya, and that he sought education in the United States.

In this video clip, Michelle Obama makes the mistake of calling Kenya Obama’s home country.

And in this video, although a bit suspect because of how it got cut off, Obama makes a statement that implies a country of birth other than the United States.

So according to the available information, a natural born citizen, according to a decision in the Supreme Court, and according to the opinion of the founding fathers in the Naturalization Act, is a child born of parents who are both citizens of the United States. Obama’s father is not a citizen of the United States. Therefore, Obama is not a natural born citizen.

It’s really not a complicated matter. What has complicated the issue is the willingness of so many to overlook this disqualifying fact. Obama should have never been president. He shouldn’t be president now. And he shouldn’t be on any of the ballots for the 2012 election. Everything he’s done while functioning as the president of the United States should be undone. And frankly, for the fraud he’s committed, he should be impeached, indicted, and imprisoned.

So William, do try to keep the ugly comments to a minimum. You are mistaken. It does matter where the father is born. No one is stupid because they are Republican. And no one is criticizing Obama because he’s Democrat. He is being criticized because he’s a fraud and has no business being president of the United States.

The Defense Authorization law allows the Federal Government to do to your person, your physical body, the exact same thing that SOPA/PIPA does to data. It is sad that so few people complained about that.

    • Alex Frazier

I complained about the NDAA. I also complained about the Patriot Act. Between the two of them, they override our 4th, 5th, and 6th amendment rights.

  • Liz

The FIGHT is not over yet! At first if you don’t suceed try try again. So they are. Because they could not take control of the internet in the USA now they set thier sights higher. Our Gov went on EU to to see if they could pass the bill under another name internationally first so they could control it here in the USA. Avaaz posted this today. Now they are trying to pass it under the guise of saying it will protect our children from online predators. Many people will fall for thier tricks….

    • Alex Frazier

Yeah, the government is bound and determined to get control of the internet. It’s the last bastion of freedom in the world. Can’t have that going on.
