Hydrate Your Way to Health: The Dehydration-Illness Connection

Hydrate Your Way to Health: The Dehydration-Illness Connection

It is vital that every human being drink ample amounts of water every day—especially those who suffer headaches.

Since water makes up roughly 75 percent of the human body and 85 percent of the brain, it only makes sense that no tissue, organ or gland can function properly without an ample supply of this natural fluid. It is the improper functioning of the digestive system, lungs, liver and kidneys that not only contributes to and triggers headaches, but also makes us ill. Indeed, we humans would surely cease to exist without the magic elixir known as water, which, next to oxygen, is the most vital substance on Earth.

Drinking ample quantities of water every day is so important that for centuries many traditional cultures have used its healing qualities to cure and prevent various illnesses and diseases. Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), for example, recognized the healing powers of water more than 3,000 years ago.

Even Hippocrates, the father of modern medicine, was said to have drank and bathed in water to benefit from the healing properties of its mineral content. Indeed, the mere consumption of this fluid can help restore the body to its natural state of homeostasis (balance) by clearing toxins, cleansing the colon, flushing the liver and kidneys and emptying the bowels—all necessary elements to removing and preventing a number of headaches.

With the abundance of water available in the United States and the sheer necessity of it to our health and well-being, it is a wonder that the many illnesses and ailments are actually caused or aggravated by simple dehydration. The leading researcher of our time on illness and diseases caused by dehydration is Dr. F. Batmanghelidj, an internist trained at St. Mary’s Hospital Medical School of London University and one of the last students of Sir Alexander Flemming, the discoverer of penicillin. In his book, The Body’s Many Cries for Water, Dr. Batmanghelidj asserts: “Chronic, unintentional dehydration is the origin of most pain and degenerative diseases in the human body.” (1)

It was while spending several years in an Iranian prison that Batmanghelidj came to discover the healing powers of simple water—including decreased occurrence and symptoms of heartburn, lupus, arthritis and peptic ulcers—and the negative effects of dehydration. So how does dehydration cause pain and illnesss?

As the water content of tissues falls to a certain point as a result of dehydration the bi-layer membranes that surround cells contract, forming a barrier that prevents further water loss. This obstructs the free movement of molecules so that metabolism and elimination are limited. Slow metabolism and elimination lead to build-up of toxins in the blood which can manifest as a chemical-induced headache.

It is important to understand that regardless of the quantity of your daily water intake, its percentage in urine remains constant at around 95 percent. When the hypothalamus detects a lowering of water volume in the body it signals the pituitary gland to release the antidiuretic hormone (ADH) into the bloodstream which increases the capacity of the kidneys to re-absorb and recycle water.

In essence, when the body moves into survival mode by contracting the bi-layer membranes, the kidneys keep recycling and concentrating the urine in an effort to maintain sufficient hydration. Thus the less water put into the body the less the body’s ability to cleans itself of poisonous toxins through elimination via urine, feces, perspiration and the breath. And since waste products left to accumulate in your tissues create chronic pain, headaches and many diseases, water intake is necessary to facilitate the effective elimination of the toxic build-up.

It is in part due to the overtaxing of the colonic track by overeating, ingesting foods high in nitrates and other chemical content, in addition to an abundance of sugars or alcohol, that one feels exhausted, lethargic, experiences seemingly unending dull headaches, catches colds easily or becomes seriously ill. It is precisely the absorption of the nutrients in the colon and intestines from the food we eat that prevents, causes or cures what ails us.

In fact, research has indicated that a thorough flushing of the mucus folds in the colonic tract where toxins and wastes generally remain will cleanse the system and keep the body healthy and the immune system strong. At the same time, quantities of water are known to revitalize the kidney and liver. Thus, by drinking ample quantities of water the colon will become more effective, thus increasing the quantity and supply of fresh blood that can then move throughout the body.

It is vital that every cell, tissue and organ in your body be sufficiently hydrated for your body to return to and maintain its natural state of homeostasis. It is only in this state that the chemical toxins that have built up in the body can be properly processed and eliminated. Water is the only substance that can properly hydrate the body; not caffeinated coffees and teas, carbonated sodas or sugar-filled fruit drinks.

Only water, pure and simple as it is, will keep you healthy and help the body eliminate many of the underlying triggers affecting your health daily. So how much water is enough?

There is much written about specific quantities of water that are needed by the body to function properly. Drinking a single glass of water at lunch or dinner will not do the job. While the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recommends six 8-ounce glasses of water per day, other experts suggest consuming 8 ounces of water per 20 pounds of body weight.

But remembering math and numbers throughout a busy day can be difficult. In order to reap the full health benefits from water one must think in terms of water as therapy and drink copious amounts throughout the entire day. If you drink water from a bottle throughout the day, after a period of hydration you will find yourself making frequent trips to the restroom to relieve yourself.

A continuous flow of water through your body that is continually washing away the toxins in your system and keeping them from building up is exactly what you want. This way your kidneys will not become over-taxed and forced to concentrate urine in an effort to maintain proper levels of hydration in your body.

When urine is concentrated as a result of dehydration its color becomes dark. Therefore, if you find yourself drinking throughout the day, but it has been a while since your last glass, check your urine. If it is colored, it is a sign that you are becoming dehydrated—and this happens quickly when consuming caffeinated diuretic beverages like coffee and soda—and it is time for another glass or two of water.

I always keep my bottle of spring or filtered water filled and at my side. In this way, I will never forget to drink from it and I will not be forced to consume chemically treated tap water in whatever location I happen to find myself.

In summary, we have established the undeniable fact that keeping the body properly hydrated helps remove toxins from the body while maintaining proper blood flow and organ, muscle and glandular functions; and that drinking water throughout the day, as dictated by urine color, is the best way to maintain proper hydration.

Your body will never feel as light or as clean and unpolluted as it will once it is properly hydrated. And in the process, a large portion of the on-going headache triggers that have attacked you in the past will be eliminated.

    Dr Wiley,

Great reminder (about the benefits of drinking water). I’m pretty good about drinking water at home, but when I’m at work and I get very busy (which is just about every single work day)…I tend to forget to drink water (or at least not enough water)…….so thank you for the reminder!

Well….better go now….time for that glass of water before bed :-).

    • Nam

“A glass of water before bed” is awful and scares me. This only helps
me to my frequent urination after bed because of my prostate and diabetic illness.

      • Fed Up Gal in NM

I see your point Nam. For me, I feel parched if I don’t drink a little water before going to sleep and end up waking during the night…then getting up to get a drink of water….thus my sleep is interrupted during the night. Since I’ve never had a prostate….I’ve not experienced the problem you mentioned :-).

        • libertytrain

Hey Gal – nice to see you again – I’ve taken to drinking some water at night and am finding (despite my fears that it would make me get up to eliminate at night) that it’s actually helping me sleep through the night -

  • sandra

I wound up in the hospital dehydrated with a low sodium content. I was drinking lots and lots of iced tea, and wondered how that could happen. Evidently tea as well as soda or things other than water dehydrate even further and flush the electrolytes out of the body. Pure water is best. I now drink three 24 oz. bottles of spring water daily, and feel wonderful.

    • Milton Garrett

Drink Alkaline water –and 20 oz is only the tip of the iceberg that you should be drinking. You should be drinking 1/2 your weight in ounces MINIMUM per day.

      • Tom powers

        What is alkaline water?

        • blackelk998

          quick tip
believe it or not a couple of drops of lemon juice in your glass of water will turn it alkaline wierd as it may seem being an acid

  • http://donthaveone Beberoni

What I dont understand about water consumption, is that coffee is all water except for the grounds it runs through for flavoring, and beer which is 90 percent water, and Im told these cannot hydrate you. I guess since they both are 90 percent water and 100 percent water, Im not following why they cannot hydrate you. It doesnt seem like this can be true, but this is what Im told by a fitness friend of mine. What do you think?

    • Milton Garrett

Because they have other ingridents that de-hydrate you! DA!

      • http://donthaveone Beberoni

If your so damn smart, why then can’t you spell ingredients? I was asking a question, and didnt need your smart ass remarks. I wouldnt listen to someone who has your delivery sir. You come across as an ass, and I dont listen to asses. You understand me? Now, as far as your thinking you know everything about anything, and this comment about bottled water catching up to my friend, let me educate you, because you dont know nothing it seems. Your mistaken, and wrong. My father is almost ninety, and as of this day, he still doesnt drink bottled water. He drinks it out of the kitchen tap. He says it tastes better. Now most people like you, who seem to think they know it all, will say how many bad things are in the tap water and such, and well pal, I seriously dont see you making it to ninety. Your worrying and know it all ism’s will take you to an early grave, and you can count on that. Me, Ill drink from the tap, have a bottled water, eat steak, potatoes, cheese, eggs, potato chips, and all that stuff that this current society says is so bad for you, and just like my parents, and their parents before them, and theirs before them, Ill be kicking into my 90′s. So dont think so much of yourself sir, you may find out in time, that you dont know much at all. Capish Amigo?

        • jeanelane

Ease up! Ignore folks like him! Not worth the effort!
Coffee has caffeine, which is a diuretic – makes you lose fluid in your cells. Alcohol in beer, wine, etc does the same thing. So what you have to do is if you have 8 ounces of coffee, drink 16 ounces of water to offset that. If you have a 12 ounce beer, drink 24 ounces of water in addition to the beer. The thing is, do you want to be healthy? If so, just drinking more water will help, but there are other things you also need to do. More than you will find here. Try reading something like the Healthy For Life book.

        • James

Berberoni, anyone who “dont know nothing” knows everything.

    • Al Sieber

Beberoni, I think maybe it’s the caffeine in the coffee, and the alcohol in the beer. and they work on your nervous system, somehow this dehydrates you.

    • Dr. Mark Wiley

Water is water. Water flavored with sugar and tea, coffee and soda and alcohol is not pure water. These beverages are diuretics and cause you to lose water and become dehydrated.

  • http://donthaveone Beberoni

Also, Ive heard about people drinking too much water and getting sick from it, and also that people have died from drinking too much water. How can this be so? A friend of mine says he drinks a case of bottled water a day, and seems fine except he has to go to the bathroom all the time.

    • Milton Garrett

It’s not so! And your friend is very lucky drinking Toxic, Acidict Bottled water. It will catch up sooner or later.

      • http://hydrateyourwaytohealth alex

When you educate people, the best approach is on our equal level, Mr Garrett makes very snide remarks, like a know it all, and that is just insulting. Please refrain from this method, it’s degrading. We need to know basic answers, not DUH behind your logic, thanks.

      • http://donthaveone Beberoni

You need spell check or something, or maybe just to get educated Milton. Ingredients, not ingridents, and acidic, not acidict. You want someone to listen to you, and to appear to be wise, it would probably suit you well to learn how to spell. Im just saying…………

        • Dorothy

If you want someone to listen to you, then you only need to know how to talk. To heck with the spelling.

          • http://donthaveone Beberoni

But if your coming across as Mr. Know it all, then he should know how to spell, or people like me that he is chastizing are not going to think of him as so smart.

Drinking too much water too fast after heavy exertion will often make someone sick because it is too much at once and the body can’t accept it. Water alone won’t hydrate you quickly enough (putting back needed nutrients) when under heavy exertions, such as sports, construction, exercise, or even when just being too busy and “forgetting”. My brother is a roofer in the hot SC sun and used to get massive cramps & headaches when working, even though he drank massive amounts of water during the day. I convinced him to try ROC20 in a glass of water and he swears by it now – never being without. He has all of his crew as believers also. My whole family drinks at least one glass of water with ROC20 added to it daily and more after exerting themselves a lot. The company that makes the product has been in business 70+ years & is the #1 company in the world for organic vitamins, nutrients, and supplements. Have a happy healthy day everyone

    • blackelk998

very important that now and then he adds some sea salt to regain vital minerals he is robbing his body of so too much water can rid your body not only of bad toxins but good minerals

    • Dr. Mark Wiley

It is true that you can drink too much water, leading them to hyponatremia or water intoxication. When this happens the concentration of sodium in the blood drops, casing swelling of the brain. This swelling can cause one to feel lethargic, dizzy, nauseous and in the extreme can lead to unconsciousness and death.

It is difficult to place a set quantity on how much water is necessary for everyone. While most people do need about 2 liters per day to be healthy, this depends on water content in their food consumption and how much they sweat, etc. Therefore, as this article aimed to point out…

The proper amount of water intake per person, individually, is based on the color of their urine. If it becomes darker than a light straw color more water is necessary to rehydrate. Urine color is the best and most accurate indication of dehydration for a person (unless they are taking vitamins that temporarily alter the color). Let urine color be your guide to daily water quantity, as each day may require different amounts based on activity and environment.

      • James

Dr. Wiley, Thank you, I’ve noticed that when my water consumption is minimal my urine is more orange colored. Also, I’ve been adding 1/8 tsp. of sea salt to a 16 oz. bottle of water, now and then, does that cause the water to be dehydrative? I use distilled water.

        • Dr. Mark Wiley

Yes, when water intake is low, and/or perspiration is high, urine color becomes darker. As for adding salt… I think it is ok, but not sure what you are hoping to gain from it.

  • Al Sieber

Living and working out in the desert and extreme heat almost all my life I know the benefits of H20, I’ve tried Gator Ade and Sports drinks also, until they started adding high frutose corn syrup. during a average working day I consume 2 gal. of water easily, or more. drinking water is no problem with me, it’s the people working with me that’s the problem, trying to convince them to forget the soda pop is hard. thanks for the article Bob, I learned a lot I didn’t know.

    • Milton Garrett

Yes! The sports drinks all register Acidict! They also do the reverse of what the advertise—-they take away your energy, not increase it.

      • http://donthaveone Beberoni

Im not buying what your selling. Ill take a Gatorade anyday to replenish what Ive lost in exerting myself in sports. So now you know more than a bunch of scientists at the University of Florida?

        • Al Sieber

Beberoni, I’m not saying I know more than the scientists, I drank gator ade for years, until they started putting in high frutose corn syrup. I won’t drink or eat anything with that in it, or aspertane, or flouride either. check out what it is. it’s legal poison. their putting flouride in some bottled water too.

          • Anthony

Berberoni – Al Seiber “gets it” …. YOU should listen.

Try watching ‘Sweet Misery’ on YouTube.

          • http://donthaveone Beberoni

Sorry Al, my response was to Milton, and not to you. I just know that after a lot of physical exertion, I seem to recover my fluids much faster when I use Gatorade, plus I use a lot of water also. I never liked that Sport-Ade that came along, and a couple of others I tried. I dont really care for the new Gatorade’s either. I still the the old original orange colored one.

Hi Al, please see my comments about ROC20. It really is the greatest, but you won’t find it in regular stores. My 17 year old son, who is training for the NINJA WARRIOR COMPETITION uses the ROC20 and many of their other sports nutrients. Working as you do I really do suggest the ROC20 and there is a 180 day (no hassel) guarantee for the return if you don’t find it appropriate. Oh, and the taste is pretty good for those of your crew who won’t drink plain water. That’s how I got my niece to start drinking water.

      • Al Sieber

BSHARING, thank you for the info., it’s on my list.

  • Matt

I add Cell Food, from Lumina Health Products, to my water every day – This assist the water to balance one’s pH balance. Reading the Cell Food history along with Dr. Storey the inventor is a wonderful read as well.
In 1946, Everett Lafayette Storey – a man called ‘a genius’ by Albert Einstein – was engaged in an exhaustive process of exploring the fundamental laws of matter. Dr.Storey was a physical chemist, microbiologist, publisher, and author. Everett Storey was an expert in “Heavy Water” and in the uses of Deuterium, the non-radioactive isotope of Hydrogen.

He worked on the American top-secret “Manhattan Project” and developed the triggering mechanism enabling the Hydrogen Bomb to exist.
After the war, Dr.Storey and his colleagues discovered a more personal crisis: they were dying of radiation poisoning, a result of their exposure while witnessing bomb tests.

It was then that Dr.Storey developed the conceptual blueprint for Cellfood. He theorized that the very same water-splitting technology could be used to heal a human life. By utilizing hydrogen’s deuterium isotope, and a blend of the required trace minerals, enzymes and amino acids, he would create a solution— an ‘electromagnetic equation’— that could release vital oxygen and hydrogen into his bloodstream, remove toxic radiation, nourish and rebuild his systems, and return him to health. From this, he created CELLFOOD® (Deuterium Sulfate), a product he claimed was the key to any disease treatment in the world.

Saved by his very own invention, Dr.Storey lived a long, healthful and productive life. And while Storey has been credited with many discoveries, his favorite achievement was designing a substance to heal the body and restore the environment; CELLFOOD®.

Everett L. Storey’s formula has the unique ability to dissociate the water molecule into nascent Hydrogen and nascent Oxygen. This splitting of the water molecule results in the release of nascent Hydrogen and Oxygen gases simultaneously in a chain reaction that only involves about one five-hundred thousandth of the available moisture in the body at one time. This results in an additional source of Oxygen.

  • Pat Ridge

I hate to rain on your parade but I read a article from another “Leading Doctor” on the net who wrote that this drinking 8 glass of water or more is BS.He pointed out you don’t see dogs, horses, cats etc going with water bottles on their on hips(good point),no they only drink water when they are thirsty,he also stated there is plenty of water in the food we eat there is no need drown ourselves in water,he also went on writing that drinking too much water can cause all sorts of problems he listed whole page of diseases you can get from drinking too much water!!!Finally this whole campaign for drinking water until it comes out your ears is funded by the big Water Bottle Companies(he might have a point there!!!) who make millions if not billions from Worldwide sales of water. As for myself I just don’t know what to believe anymore.

    • Milton Garrett

His study must be on bottled water which is Toxic and Acidict. What is his name; And what is his email?

      • http://donthaveone Beberoni

It is not toxic. I know. Ive drank it, and Im not dead. Toxic means it is poison, and poison kills. Yet Im alive. Your point is moot.

    • Grey Wolf

I’ll back you up on your last sentence Pat! I’ve seen similar evidence that too much water in your system can actually cause kidney failure & damage to other vital organs. Then again, we all know people who drank, smoke, had horrible diets & hazardous occupations yet lived long disease free lives on one side & those health/fitness fanatics who dropped dead in the prime of their lives on the other side of the spectrum.

    • jeanelane

Problem is that we, as animals, are not on the same level as other animals. Over time, since we have coffee, tea, soft drinks, etc, we have forgotten what thirst is. Dog, horses, cats and other creatures do not drink this stuff. So many times we think we are hungry when actually we are thirsty. If you wait until you actually feel what you think is thirst, you will dehydrate. Maybe not enough to hospitalize, but you won’t be as healthy and well as you can be.

Here is a calculator to determine how much water you should be drinking => Milk can go towards your total. If you have caffeinated drinks, you have to have an equal amount of water to offset the caffeine.

    • Dr. Mark Wiley

Hello, Pat. Thank you for adding this to our discussion. I agree with what you infer from the other doc’s message. The sensation of feeling thirsty is our natural indicator that we are dehydrated. And, yes, drinking too much water is not health and, in excess, can lead to adverse health conditions. Also, that there is water in the food we eat.

The message I am sharing is one of self-regulation, not standard formula. Each person is indeed different in their water quantity needs. This is based on lifestyle and location–how much food do they eat that contains water, how much water do they drink, what quantity of dehydrating beverages do they consume, how much do they sweat, and what is the heat/humidity condition of their work or life environment. With all of these variables playing into the equation, it is incorrect to say, “drink 8 glasses of water per day.”

Thus, the only way to know for yourself, as an individual, how much water you require each day, is based on the color of your urine. The darker the urine color, the more dehydrated your body is and the more water you need to drink to rehydrate it. If your urine color is light/pale all day, then you are doing well. If not, then you need to drink more until the color changes.

Thanks again for your comments, and for giving me this opportunity to restate the message.

  • http://n/a Stanley Britt

My recommendation is to drink half your body weight in ounces throughout the day!!

    • Milton Garrett

Yes! 1/2 your weight in ounces. Any Doctor that states drinking lots of water must have gone to a medical school in the deep jungles of Africa!

      • Milton Garrett

Correction: “drinking lots of water is BS……

        • Al Sieber

Hey Milton, if you lived and worked out in the Mohave Desert where I live, the temp. a week or so ago reached 123* in Bullhead City Ariz. you’d be drinking plenty of water, the heat would be sucking the moisture out of you faster than you could drink it. you’re gonna drink as much as your body requires or have a heat stroke, or go into cardiac arrest like my friend did 2 weeks ago. everyone is different…

        • blackelk998

before you say that ,have you tried it.
I once thought like that when I was a kid but having tried drinking plenty of water I can tell you that all my aches and pains that I have had the last 25 years have gone completely my damaged eye of many years heeled up,I dont get headaches any more and do not suffer from acid attack either. I simply drink approx 6 pints of alkaline water a day and have noticed a massive difference,Im amazed about how many are quick to judge and dont have the bottle to try it themselves. the average person complains and ridicules until many years down the line it is proven ,I dare nt tell you how much free energy their is out there and how many ailments can be cured with out drugs you would probaly say BS again and again ,please wake up,dont watch the news or believe half the things you were taught in school start learning how to think when you discover all the options.hope this helps wish you well

          • http://donthaveone Beberoni

You are correct about the drugs. Nature offers so many remedies for the cures of our ailments. Doctors pretty much all seem to be in bed with the pharmaceutical companies and push more and more drugs, which arent good for the body. They mask the problem, and screw up the mind and body. We had an Amish guy here that was healing everyone with herbs and roots, and the so called medical profession went after him with lawyers and they made him cease and desist and charged him for practicing medicine without a license, even though he wasnt using medicinal drugs, he was just using natures bounty. But you are right, there is more out there that is better for us than the drugs they want to give us for our ailments.

          • Dr. Mark Wiley

            Black Elk,
Thank you for sharing this positive health experience with us! Dehydration is indeed a cause of many chronic aches and pains we deal with. Without ample water, toxins can remain in the body and cause adverse health conditions; tendons tighten; inflammation occurs; histamine levels rise; headaches ensue. The first line of restoration in any health management program should be first to hydrate the body. Your story is an example of the restorative power of water.

  • Milton Garrett

Most bottled water is TOXIC and ACIDIC. The plastic bottles omit toxians. Environmental-wise, about 38 billion bottles are filling up in our landfills each year and poluting our oceans. The water itself in 95% of the cases, is acidic and can produce Acidosis. The Japanese have used Alkaline pH Water since the early 1960s. Dr Otto Warberg, 1931 Nobel Prize recipient, stated in his studies “No disease, including cancer, can exist in an alkaline environment”. Japanese medicine has proven this over the last 60 years. This means that ACID is the seed of disease. Beware of bottled water and don’t drink tap water that has deadly Fluoride added to it.

    • http://donthaveone Beberoni

Again, having seen for 50 years, those loved ones around me drink plain tap water, and they are in their upper 80′s and 90′s, and have no health ailments at all, no high blood pressure, and no overweight issues. I cannot believe what you are saying, as I have seen the exact opposite. Ill put my 90 year old fathers health against yours anyday. When your 90, and as health as him, come talk to me. Until then, all your saying is just your opinion, and while I reserve your right in America to have your opinion, your not going to persuade me with it, as I deal in facts, and facts is, everyone around me, including myself, has drank tap water all our lives, and we are all health and live a long time. And thats the truth, so I dont know how you can refute that.

  • Dale Hogue

I read the article and all the comments and I’m more confused than informed about how much water intake is necessary for good health. One would think that the simple act of drinking water would be just that “simple”, but apparently that is not the case. I learned that drinking water from plastic bottles is not a good idea. Also, I learned that drinking “pure” water is better than drinking water mixed with tea or coffee or some other substance. I was told not to drink water out of the tap because it has all kinds of deadly fluorides added to it. Now, that doesn’t leave me with many options. I suppose I can get “pure” water that is not bottled in plastic, but how can I evaluate how pure it really is? I’m 80 years old and I’ve drunk just about every type of liquid produced on this planet and I haven’t died yet. Does that mean I’ve just been lucky so far or does it mean that the next drink may do me in? This business of making decisions is what creates most of my headaches, which, by the way, I don’t have very often. Let’s see, the last one I had was in 1947 when I was hit in the head with a fast ball thrown high and inside. There were no batting helmets back in those days, so after I came to, I rubbed some water on it and wobbled off down to first base. I know that the water wasn’t consumed, but it felt good, nevertheless.

    • http://donthaveone Beberoni

Thank you sir. You echo my sentiments about water. These guys try to tell us this and tell us that, yet you have lived it, and like I said in my other posts, Ive watched my 90 year old father, my uncles, and all kinds of people in their upper 80′s and 90′s, still drink tap water. Im 52, and Ive drank it all my life, and I still do, and not one of us has any health ailments. I think being scared and worrying kill people more than anything, and those that worry themselves sick about water, are doing to kick off a good twenty years before I do. Maybe Ill take some of my good tap water and water the flowers on their grave for them.

    • Dr. Mark Wiley

      Hello Dale,
Thank you for sharing your thoughts with us. Yes, health is a confusing topic. All of the experts have different theories and information and often it is contradictory. My message is one of self-direction, of knowing what is best for you based on your own lifestyle and living conditions. The water equation is this:

      1) Drink enough water each day so that the color of your urine is pale. When it becomes darker, then more water is needed. If it is pale all day, then you are getting enough water in beverage or food that you requires based on your lifestyle and location.

      2) Aside from quantity of water, the other issue is purity of water. To be healthy, water should be alkaline, cleared of toxins and chemicals, and not held in a plastic container. Using pH strips to test acid levels is simple and cheap, as is using water purifiers where needed.

      Hope this helps.

      • Blak Kat

Where can you get water, besides from the tap, that is not in plastic bottles? I would love to get bottled water that is in glass bottles, but no one uses glass anymore. I agree with the comments that plastic bottles are toxic and can leak chemicals into the water, but all water companies use plastic bottles. If there is an alternative, I would like to know. Thanks.

  • kate8

I have, myself, experienced the benefits of drinking ample water. The thing is, the water needs to be as pure as possible. This pretty much eliminates water from the tap and bottled water. Even well-water, though better, can hold contamination from the load of pollution in our soil.

I bought a good gravity filter last year, and it works great. It will remove all detectable contaminants of even water scooped out of a mud-hole. You can also add a special filter that removes fluoride. In addition, I add oxygenating drops. Adding a bit of fresh lemon, lime or raw vinegar will also make it more alkalizing to your system.

    • Linda

Kate8, I find your comments interesting and would like to get more info. Can you name the type filter you have and where to get the oxygenating drops…I also like the idea of adding vinegar to the water.

      • bill

be carefull Linda, Kate didn’t mention that the only vinegar to use is apple-cider vinegar. get Bragg’s or Spectrum Organic, or any vinegar that has lots of sediment in it,not the clear refined kind.

        • Linda

Thank you for the info Bill. I have also been reading about Cell Food from Lumina Health Products’ website that Matt discussed earlier today.
          Very interesting read.

      • kate8

Linda, I did say raw vinegar, but neglected to mention to get apple cider vinegar. Raw, unfiltered – it contains enzymes. I use about a tsp in the morning and in the evening, and use lemon or lime the rest of the day. It does really good things for your digestion, too.

I use a Berkey water filter. You can find them online. As far as I know they can ship anywhere except CA.

As far as oxygen drops, I use Oxylift. GHT’s OxygenElementsPlus is good also. Also available online.

      • Al Sieber

Linda “berkey” and “Katadyn” are good filters. I pump out of a mine shaft and use the “Berkey Filter” because it leaves the minerals you need in the water. sorry, I don’t have a link.

I find that Garrett replies are very distasteful, he states his facts like it were the bible, all people want is an answer, not to be browbeat into someone else way of thinking. Please refrain from the DUH at the end of your sermon, we don’t want to feel so stupid. Thanks.

Chlorides, flourides, acids, somebody give me a Bromo-seltzer. If it wasn’t for added chlorine we’d all be sick, and as for flourine, I, at least, probably would hsve even fewer teeth left than I do now because of weak enamel. I had an awful kidney stone years ago and was told it was because of diet, not something in the water that built up inside me. Actually it was more because of severe dehydration from 14 years of Civil War reenacting in hot June-August sun and not nearly enough water. That little quart canteen would be dry in a half hour and we would be out in wool clothes for 3-7 hours at a time in 88-100 degree heat.

  • Len

Hey Doc — thank you very much for this article on water consumption. I never knew the facts and correlation between weight loss and water. I have been going to a nutritionist to help lower my weight, and she always asks how much water I am consumming. I thought it all had to do with removing salt from my system and thus lowering the actual water retention. But your article made alot of sense. The other day, I had to be out in the sun for a long period of time performing at a picnic in 95 deg weather. Obviously my whole time there was spent consumming water. I expected that the hot sun would drain me, but much to my surprise, I felt great. I sweated alot, and drank alot of water. I can only say that removing all of these poisons was more invigorating to my body than sitting in an air conditioned room. Please keep contributing.. We are out here listening..

    • Dr. Mark Wiley

Thank you, Len. I will continue doing my best to broaden our awareness of health. You, and all those writing here, are also contributing to the discussion and thus to our learning.

Garrett, the word is ACIDIC, not “acidict.”

And he presents himself as the “Know-All”, and he cant even spell it. Excuse me now, as Ive got to go over to my sink and get a good drink of tap water. Umm Umm Good. I love this stuff.

  • gene

Well now lets simplify things here. Tap water Depends on wether it comes from your own well or from the city water that is treated with Flouride. If it comes from your own well and has been tested to be safe then it is good for you. If it comes from the city then it is bad for you. William Campbell Douglas is the Doctor who doesnt drink water, he drinks wine. Sodas are not good for you period! Fruit Juices are good for you if they are pure fruit juice. We need liquid to prevent dehydration but as animals do we only need it when we are thirsty. Get a good water filter and replace it often if you only have city water. A few drops of Hydrogen Peroxide will kill any bad bacteria in your water. You can even use it to keep milk from spoiling. Do a search for Hydrogen Peroxide and read up on it. It is not poison like they try to tell you. You need to get food grade Peroxide, about $20 a gallon from your health food store. Now this is 35% not 3% like you find in the grocery store. You must dilute it so it does last a long time. Too much of anything will hurt you. Gene

    • Lin

William Campbell Dougless says regular peroxide is as good as food grade, JUST CHEAPER! It is all in how much you use, and the manner in which you use it. He will not commit to saying much on it, because of the ridiculous legalities of saying anything lately in our ‘free’ country.

    • blackelk998

make sure their is no chlorine in your water you are dilluting as it reacts with peroxide

      What are you referring to?

  • Anthony

Many of you have posted interesting comments… seriously.

The real bottom line is this — (and, yes, I’ve read this everywhere I google)

The human bottom, to remain HEALTHY must maintain an “alkaline” favorable balance. If you know anything about water – you know that 7.0 is equilibrium – not too acidic nor too alkaline. But, the real thirst for the human body is to be somewhere closer to 7.5 if at all possible.

The MORE ALKALINE the human body, the less sick you find yourself being.

Also – look into the make up of Water – being H/2/O, yes…?
The more oxygen-ated the water you drink, the more healthy you become.
Look it up … for once in your lives, start googling this stuff.
You can now buy water units that add oxygen molecules to the water you drink. Sure, right now, they are all tryin’ to make a buck along the way – but the science bears out what they are bragging about. AND, THAT’S what you should be focusing on…. the science that bears it all out.

H2O can become something more .. and it is beneficial to your health.
You can call it kook-science … but, prove it or test it for yourself.

I know this – a lot of what is beneficial to the human body has been suppressed by Mainstream Big Pharma because it interferes with their profit margins…. which involve hundreds of thousands of patients. At that number, you’re into billions of dollars. It ain’t chicken feed….

    - Around GUAM, they say this is the palce to find the only real calcium the human body could drink up like a sponge and it works.
    - Over in Pakistan/India, there is a herb that used to be consumed by Homer and Aristotle which boosts memory so well, it erradicates alzheimers.
    - In South America, you can buy SALBA – the perfect energy food, for the human body.
    - Scientists in America have defined that higher alklinity in the human body prevents sickness.
    - Honey mixed with hydrogen peroxide (the dosage?) cause cancer cells to explode …. only the cancer cells, mind you. It leaves the healthy cells alone.

It goes on and on….. But, the one thing I do know and totally agree with — is you do not need 8 glasses of water a day. If you do wait till you are thirsty, to go grab a drink -make sure it has little or no caffeine, as that is what will de-hydrate you. Coffee has other beneficial affects, so avoiding that is slightly a mistake – but otherwise, anything with caffeine or alcohol can drain the water from you -which then creates a toxic affect — aka: hangover, etc. Ever notice how the minute you get hydrated after a binge drunk, you feel better almost instantly? Raise the alkalinity in your body and you will feel better.

Hint: Drinking lemonade (a citrus food) metabolizes into alkaline in the human body … unless you put vodka in it, that is…. LOL

Call me a liar… but, google it up first and provide evidence. I’ve really spent an amazing amount of time – not only reading what Bob Livingston has provided, but, I’ve extrapolated. Now, it’s your turn.

    • kate8

Anthony, all you say is true.

Disease occurs in a body that is too acidic and oxygen deprived. Today’s diet of over-processed foods, toxins from our environment, and stress are all acid-forming. There is a book called “Alkalize or Die” (don’t recall the author) that gives good advise on alkalizing.

Another facet of ill health is poor cell respiration. Hydrogen peroxide is an oxygenator – it raises oxygen in the cells. I have used it – yech! I prefer the oxygen drops, since they are good-tasting and much safer. The ones I mentioned create oxygen using the body’s own water, and oxygen levels are sustained for many hours.

Good oxygenation is how the body burns up toxins. Taking oxygen orally is a powerful detoxifier. You can also get a home ozone generator, which will detoxify the air you breathe while oxygenating you.

Energy blockages in the lymphatic system are another factor. All of these factors work together, and optimizing one upgrades the others.

There are many great products nowdays, and great technology, if one can afford it. The good news is that there are simple and inexpensive ways to stay healthy. The main thing is that we must all take responsibility for our own health care, if we really want good health.

    • Al Sieber

Anthony, I’ve been drinking Alkalized H20 for 3 years, along with regular water and a few occasionally a few beers and feel good. no sodas for 30 years though, never liked them.

  • Connie

To put it simply, water from any source (except for known infected sources. There was a reason for the “invention” of wine!) is better for you than any other drink! Consider soda and all the junk that is in there! Other drinks may have nutrients or other chemicals that are beneficial but they should be added to your water intake, not take the place of it. Yes, floride and chlorine in your water is not the greatest nor is plastic leeched into your bottled water but that water is better than NO water! So, tap water is fine, as long as you like the taste, and bottled water will do, too. Just consider all of the chemicals that are in the other things you drink! Don’t make an ocean out of a glass of water!

In regards to the amount of water you should drink, thirst is not necessarily a good indicator! I read Dr. Batman’s book years ago and I know that what he says is quite valid. I always feel much better when I am drinking water, especially my knees. In fact, I know that it makes a definite difference in my blood pressure! When I have been at the doctor’s and not been drinking water lately my BP is always higher than when I have been drinking water. My problem is that soda tastes sooooo much better to me! But lately I have been turned off by it, which is great but I find that I initially have to force myself to drink water because I just don’t FEEL that thirsty but then after a while of “force feeding” myself water my feeling of thirst comes back. It usually takes a couple of days or more. In fact, I begin to feel VERY thirsty for about a week until the system has been cleaned out.

In regards to the actual amount, don’t worry about what horses and dogs drink! They aren’t human and have different requirements. Just look at all that nice moisture ladened grass that horses eat! So maybe they don’t need as much separate water as we do. Also, if we eat a more “watery” diet we don’t need as much either. However, if we are eating a more standard western diet we don’t get much water from the food we eat.

The old stand by of 8-10 8 oz glasses of water shows that the idea of half of your weight in ounces of water is about standard when you consider the average woman or man at their ideal weight. A woman at 5’4″ and 128 lbs would need 64 oz of water following that formula… ta da… 8 8 oz glasses of water! Hmmmm… A man at 5’10″ and 160 lbs would need 10 8 oz glasses of water! Hmmmm…. If you break it all down to the course of a day that means: 1. when you get up; 2. with breakfast; 3. Midmorning (coffee break); 4. Lunchtime; 5. Midafternoon (snack time); 6. As you head home from work; 7.With dinner; and 8. BEDTIME! If you are heavier than average, which I am, then you add a glass or two of water or you increase the size of your glass! Another good way to keep it flowing is to take a drink of water everytime you go… water out…water in!

Another thing that wasn’t mentioned in the above article is the importance of SALT!!! Don’t be afraid of salt! Just be sure to use sea salt because it has all sorts of nice minerals for you! Consider white table salt to be the white sugar or flour of the salt world.

The best thing to do is to read the book “Your Body’s Many Cries for Water” He goes into the importance of salt and maintaining the balance of fresh water and ocean water in your body!

Above all, NO one has all the answers! We are here to learn from each other and to encourage one another, not to put them down. The person you are answering may be new to the idea being discussed and not have much knowledge. Take it as an opportunity to be a blessing to them because someday you will be in the same position on another topic because none of us know it all!

    • libertytrain

Connie – nice post – thanks!

  • iconospatial

well…I read some of the posts. I would like to comment on a few things. The first is everything needs balance. The things we think, breathe, eat, and absorb through our skin, all contribute to one of the following…Being acidic or alkaline. Health at its utmost is dependant on being slightly alkaline. Everything that is proccessed is acid. What the western diet is comprised of is acid….all to keep everyone sick??? All the posts here, I’m assuming, are due, obviously for one’s health and well being, but what is the underlying reason…is it the realization, that the food supply has very limited nutrients, vitamins, minerals, trace elements within them????
Now my observation is the following…we all are trying to not be sick. Who is making us sick???? That is the real question, and why???
If I am not mistaken, these genetic manipulators, that add, remove, and change the seed code to create a supposed better fruit, vegetable, etc…would they not ensure that thier manipulations would keep us all healthy??? Yet, the news is out there…all grown produce is defficient in what the body needs. Remember through manipulation you either create good or bad. And, yes they have been genetically modifiying all kinds of seeds, that deprive the vegetable, fruit, etc from being healthy to the body. A long time ago a person said, “He who controls the food, controls the world!”. This is exactly what is going on. This is why you are running to drink Kagen water, and all related alkaline producing products. What should be done is…plant gardens, farmlands with real seeds…oh! we can’t buy those anymore, and if you do, they are expensive. Soon, we will need a permit to grow a garden…and they will provide the seeds to sow(dead seeds… beautiful looking veggies and stuff…but worthless in nutritional value, but with added viruses and the like). I kid know one. I strongly suggest you all to look up Agenda21 or Codex Alimentarius. You will find out why you are sick, and will get sicker. You will know who made the above comment about controlling the food. It truly is sad. I understand and I wish none of it was true. I urge all to read about gmo’s. We should all pray hard, that God heal us and take care of our oppressors.

Sorry for the rant, but this is why…one of the many reasons for our being sick

  • HealthNut

I agree with the article on the importance of hydration. When you feel thirsty it is an indication that your body has been dehydrated for some time already.

  • http://donthaveone Beberoni

I seem to adjust my water intake with the amount of sweating and exersion I am putting on myself. Like if Im out mowing and its 90 degrees with 90 percent humidity like it has been here, I sweat and get soaked, and I usually drink a large amount of water. When it is cooler and Im not sweating, like in the winter time, I know its not good, but sometimes Ill go a week or longer without drinking any water, as far as pure water goes. I mean I get it in my coffee, or in a glass of wine, or in a couple of beers, but for the most part when its cold out I just dont drink much water at all. I do notice though as most likely a by product of this, I usually put on 15 to 20 pounds in the winter, and as soon as its spring time and Im out and active, it comes right off. And I do know that the red wine I drink, Mazza Vineyards Concord Wine, releases all kinds of free radicals in the body, and when I started drinking a glass a day of it, I lost twenty pounds in a month and a half. I have heard Welch’s grape juice will do the same thing. And these are made with the same Pennsylvania grapes. I also know when I was younger, and I worked outside mowing grass, I would lose weight by drinking gallons of water every day, as I would get hot in the sun and drink water all day long, and the pounds shed right off of you when doing this.

    • Connie

The wine doesn’t have free radicals, it has antioxidants that clean up the free radicals which are the bad guys! The grape juice can do the same thing without the alcohol. So can grape seed extract, blueberry, bilberry, pycnogenol (pine bark). The advantage of the supplements is a lot less calories but whole foods are always better but not always available.

One should always take into account their level of activity when it comes to drinking water. Definitely increase your intake when you are very active, whether work or working out but do drink water even if you aren’t sweating! You are always losing water through respiration and the usual channels. Hydration also reduces constipation. It can make a huge difference!

    • Connie

Oops! The computer has a mind of its own!

Especially if you eat a lot of fiber without extra fluids such as grains while fruits and veggies tend to bring their own water along.

Anyway, work to keep your water intake up during the winter and you will probably gain a lot less weight!

  • Joe Salonia

I live in trenton, florida. I have well water. when I wash dishes i put them in the dish rack. after several times of doing this theres a build up of fine sand on the rack.after the steel pans dry their clean and dry.If I put water in the same pan from the filtered spicket when that same pan drys it leaves a fine light coating inside that pan. It must come from the filter itself. what effect will this fine sand or that stuff in the filter have on my health.

  • Acushla

Here in Australia ALP State Governmemts have put Sodium Fluoride Pesticide Poison in Drinking Water. WHO has warned all member nations not to use it because of serious Medical Problems but here they do not care. Does Boiling the water do any good?

  • Gail Blair

I use distilled water or reverse osmosis only. These methods both remove flouride. Regarding distilled water leaching minerals from our body is a myth
What the proponents of this Myth want you to believe are that because distilled water is so pure, drinking it will leach minerals from your body, thereby robbing you of good health and nutrition. There is no basis of fact to document this claim. The national best-seller health and diet book: “Fit for Life II: Living Health” by Harvey and Marilyn Diamond, answers this question in the following excerpt

“Distilled water has an inherent quality. Acting almost like a magnet, it picks up rejected, discarded and unusable minerals and, assisted by the blood and the lymph, carries them to the lungs and kidneys for elimination from the body. The statement that distilled water leaches minerals from the body has no basis in fact. It doesn’t leach out minerals that have become part of the cell structure. It can’t and it won’t. It collects only minerals that have already been rejected or excreted by the cells . . . To suggest that distilled water takes up minerals from foods so that the body derives no benefit
    is absurd!!!
Distilled water also helps you absorb herbs (teas) 33% better.
To change the body from acidic I simply use lemon juice or stevia or apple cider vinegar (with the mother in it)
One must also address the spiritual roots causing the body not to be alkaline which are fear anxiety stress. Many times we are told Not to Fear in God’s Word. Fear is the culprit when your body does not maintain perfect levels of alkalinity that lead to a disease process manifestation.
