MIAMI, Aug. 2 (UPI) — Hurricane Eugene strengthened Tuesday as it moved across open water in the Eastern Pacific Ocean, the National Hurricane Center in Miami said.

Eugene, a Category 1 hurricane with sustained winds of 90 mph, was about 445 miles southwest of Manzanillo, Mexico and about 635 miles south of the southern tip of Baja, Calif., moving west-northwest at 15 mph, the center said in its 5 a.m. Eastern time release.

No coastal watches or warnings were in effect.

Eugene was expected to gain strength throughout Tuesday before it begins to weaken Wednesday, the center said.
