How To Protect The Family From Lead Poisoning

November 8, 2010 by

How to protect the family from lead poisoningThe last week of October was marked as the National Lead Poisoning Prevention Week. This may serve as a good reminder for Americans — especially those who have small children — of the ways in which they can protect their families from the severe consequences of lead exposure.

Experts say that exposure of infants and small children to high levels of lead, which is commonly found in paints used in buildings built before 1978, may lead to neurological problems, delayed development, and, in the most extreme cases, may even endanger their survival.

Richard Geller, M.D., executive medical director for the California Poison Control System, said that protection begins with nutrition. Children whose diets are rich in iron and calcium absorb less lead from the environment.

However, parents should also take other protective measures and report to the landlord if the paint in older buildings is chipping or cracking. Until it is removed, the peeling surface should be covered with duct tape.

When cooking or preparing infant formula, it is a good idea to run the cold water tap for a few minutes, which helps flush out any lead that can accumulate in sitting water. Moreover, individuals should not consume foods canned outside the United States or imported folk medicines, especially from Asia or the Middle East.

Finally, Geller warns that certain candy and children's jewelry items such as necklaces, bracelets and religious jewelry produced in Mexico have been found to contain lead, and should therefore be avoided. In general, parents and caregivers of small children should also discourage them from chewing on painted toy surfaces.

Hey Chip! Great article! I agree that we should stop using foods prepared outside the US!
Hell! Kelloggs, Coke and Campbells (to name a few) have already gone Shariah compliant.
We are in trouble! This lead awareness, I believe, is an off shoot from the UN wanting our guns. Have you tried to get a sinker lately (for fishing)?
    Good advice!

Deb, I agree with the UN meddling. I wonder when the blue helmets invade, will they use air slugs or just nuke us. As for nutrition, why do we not produce and export the abundance that can be sold, instead of importing. First problem is the several 100billions of dollars spent to idle millions of productive acres every year, also it makes welfare rats out of the land owners, like ADM and Con-AG. Another problem is the, massive agencies wonks, who love protecting a worthless fish. In stead of growing vegatables and crops for food in our country. Remember, Omoron sent a meno to DOI to figure out if if he signed a exuctive order, all private land ownership would end, and give government control over all land. Even though it is claimed it is just an idea. The UN passed a mandate in 2007 in April, to out law all private land ownership, all over the world. That is the lead poisoning I worry about, when people get mad and disgusted.

I think this story started with lead paint/lead poison. Is there any ingredient list on the can’s of paint we buy – no! Why not. We’ve only know about how poisinous lead is for a few thousand years. Manufacturers keep slipping it back in because it makes the paint colors last longer.

Unintended morph of thoughts about the UN.. are here because we (thinking folks) worry about the run-a-way train in Washington and are braced for our currancy distruction and some trigger to have Marshall Law and Washington revoke the Constitution and the first ten amendments insuring our bill of rights. Taking our property (for the socialist good of country) is a personal wet-dream of some in Washington. Can I say that? OK they just druel alot.. We know how to work and earn our money, but the Simon La Grees in Washington want to tell us how to spend it (for the socialist good of country). Wait I’ve already said that. It isn’t too late to buy “real” physical in-your-hand silver Maples and Eagles to balance your food budget next year. A few big bags of beans and rice wouldn’t hurt either.

How to protect your family from lead poisoning?

You teach your family to shoot first.

Fear of lead can be fine but like most fears it can be overdone.

Yes, lead in quantity can be a problem. But even the government isn’t too worried about it. Not when they ignore the lead content of dirt next to busy intersections that can have as high as 30,000 ppm lead in it due to the lead that used to be added to gasoline many years ago. After all, THEY would have to clean that up!

So don’t get too frightened about lead. A little simple common sence can do wonders.

How to avoid lead poisoning? Do not buy ANYTHING made in China.
