How The News Makes You Stupid

How The News Makes You Stupid

Don’t trust anything the mainstream media tell you.

This appears to be the takeaway message from a handful of events which serve to remind the American public that the corporate-controlled mainstream media apparatus operates only to propagandize the many to the benefit of the few.

First, there are the remarks delivered by former Democratic pollster Pat Caddell at a recent Accuracy in Media conference as he discussed the embarrassing media fumbling of reporting on the deadly attacks on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya. Caddell noted that the original intent of the 1st Amendment was protecting the public from tyrannical “organized governmental power,” a purpose which American news media have long since abandoned.

“We’ve had nine days of lies over what happened because they can’t dare say it’s a terrorist attack, and the press won’t push this,” said Caddell over the weekend. “Yesterday there was not a single piece in The New York Times over the question of Libya. Twenty American embassies, yesterday, are under attack. None of that is on the national news. None of it is being pressed in the papers.”

In summary, Caddell added that it is one thing for news media to be biased but, “It is another thing to specifically decide that you will not tell the American people information they have a right to know.”

Indeed, the media floundered in reporting on the situation that unraveled in Libya where American-backed terrorists that were used as pawns (just as American-backed terrorists have always been used in Mideast conflict) to elicit regime change in the Nation turned on the United States in a violent terrorist attack against the embassy. To report what is actually going on, rather than the unbelievable narrative about the uprisings being sparked by a silly 12-minute YouTube video, would be to reveal to mass audiences that U.S. foreign policy in the region is a total failure and manufactured as such in order to ensure a continual profit flow for the military-industrial complex.

Next is the mainstream media tendency to portray President Barack Obama as whoever they believe the American public wants him to be. Months ago, in a piece that portrays the President a decider who meticulously selects targets from a list of top terrorist The New York Times proclaimed:

Mr. Obama is the liberal law professor who campaigned against the Iraq war and torture, and then insisted on approving every new name on an expanding “kill list,” poring over terrorist suspects’ biographies on what one official calls the macabre “baseball cards” of an unconventional war. When a rare opportunity for a drone strike at a top terrorist arises — but his family is with him — it is the president who has reserved to himself the final moral calculation.

…When he applies his lawyering skills to counterterrorism, it is usually to enable, not constrain, his ferocious campaign against Al Qaeda — even when it comes to killing an American cleric in Yemen, a decision that Mr. Obama told colleagues was “an easy one.”

A new report that was released last week makes the earlier Times story more significant, despite the fact that much of mainstream media have been largely mum on its findings. The report from NYU School of Law and Stanford University Law School details what life is like in Pakistan, where Obama most likes to target his drone strikes.

The report begins:

In the United States, the dominant narrative about the use of drones in Pakistan is of a surgically precise and effective tool that makes the US safer by enabling “targeted killing” of terrorists, with minimal downsides or collateral impacts.

This narrative is false.

Following nine months of intensive research—including two investigations in Pakistan, more than 130 interviews with victims, witnesses, and experts, and review of thousands of pages of documentation and media reporting—this report presents evidence of the damaging and counterproductive effects of current US drone strike policies. Based on extensive interviews with Pakistanis living in the regions directly affected, as well as humanitarian and medical workers, this report provides new and firsthand testimony about the negative impacts US policies are having on the civilians living under drones.

The report goes on to describe U.S. government terrorism against the Pakistani people that is nothing like what The New York Times described in its article about Obama’s calm-and-collected target killing.

Another reason to turn off your network news and gather information from alternative sources is the story of CNN’s firing of a three-time Emmy award-winning investigative journalist who exposed how mainstream media routinely take bribe money to run propaganda content.

Journalist Amber Lyon was fired from CNN after she refused to stop reporting on her firsthand experience of the systematic torture and murder of peaceful protesters by the American-backed government of Bahrain. After showing only a few of the reports Lyon had created, CNN pulled the journalist’s Bahrain coverage from both its domestic and international networks.

You can watch a detailed interview conducted (somewhat ironically given mainstream media’s disdain for him) by veteran alternative-media innovator Alex Jones below:

Sam Rolley

Staff writer Sam Rolley began a career in journalism working for a small town newspaper while seeking a B.A. in English. After learning about many of the biases present in most modern newsrooms, Rolley became determined to find a position in journalism that would allow him to combat the unsavory image that the news industry has gained. He is dedicated to seeking the truth and exposing the lies disseminated by the mainstream media at the behest of their corporate masters, special interest groups and information gatekeepers.

    • Robert Smith

With the corporate media it’s clear there is no “left wing” media. They toss a few bones, but it’s all hard core right, with Fox the farthest out from reality.

      • Vigilant

From your port-leaning boat (almost aswamp), everything else is starboard.

      • Travis

Robert – watching MSNBC is like watching a choir sing praises to Obama. An objective news station would have some negative criticism occasionally no matter how good the candidate is. Years ago the media and government were at odds with each other. It should alarm you somewhat when the media agrees with a government official AKA Obama and props him up like they do. Who is pulling the strings here?

      • Jim

It is very obvious that your idea of reality has a major problem. Why is it that every wrong and stupid thing Obama does get skipped over by the media? Why is it that even the tiniest little thing a conservative says or does gets blown way out of proportion? This is not news, this is editorialism masking itself as news.

    • Benjamin Fox

Its the old Hitler media thing? Tell the same lie often enough and it becomes the truth to the blind, dumber then a rock robots in the party, the communist party that is, this nation has been warned, has recieved a islamist as president and still won’t wake up from his nazi entent goals. The Godless, communist left is going to bring this nation to it’s knees and then maybe you’ll turn to the only good leader and that is the One you hate. God Almighty.

      • Mamamia

Oh get over the “God-hating” thing. If you believe in God, you wouldn’t hate him. If you don’t believe in God you would be indifferent. How do you hate God?

      • Jazzabelle

        Satan hates God.

And he sure believes in him.

  • GALT

But Sam, this is free market unregulated capitalism at it’s BEST…….and they have a
“bigger market” share……..guess they have a message which more people want to
hear than the one you are “selling”…………and $$$$$$$$$ equals success????????

CAUTION: Use of petards can be dangerous to your HEALTH.

    • Vigilant

Now GALT enjoys the word “petard,”
      It’s called “linguistic art;”
In French the word means “rectal zephyr,”
Or in GALT’s case, “brain fart.”

      • GALT

you sound a little repressed…….toilet training go bad for you……? or staying in
the closet getting a little claustrophobic?

    • Mikey

      • GALT

    • Travis

GALT – this is not even close to free market. You obviosuly don’t have any economics knowledge.

      • GALT

really? Pray tell, my economic wizard, what are the definitive characteristic’s of a “free market”?

      • Charles Johnson

A free market in news would require a person to know the news before he watched it. What we have is viewpoint news the news depends on the view point of th reporter. Until a reporter exceeds the rope the network they work for gives them. Each station has a tendency to move to the extreme on stories.

      • GALT

Well Charles, from a journalism perspective there is the who, what, why, when, where and how…… knowing the “news” is not necessary……and if it answers the questions then
it would be journalism and the news………if you are not getting that……..then you are
getting what people will pay for……..or what someone else is willing to pay for……..
which sounds like a “free market” to me……..of course, it is really hard to tell because
these concepts are so ephemeral……..having never actually existed……”free* markets”
not really meaning things for free………

Imagine the shock when the “free market capitalists” finally learn that “governments”
created markets………..and credit, and money……..squashes the whole concept of
free……..which is what they willingly gave up in exchange for…..government created
        markets, with credit and DEBT………

P.S. I’m not talking about the actual “free market capitalists” they know all this……

      • Deerinwater

I can’t help but believe the term “free markets” is a loose term, for I know of none. All markets are controlled by something or someone.

From a business persons point of view, you want to “capture market shares” to dominate a market if possible and if by chance you succeed, someone will come forward and demand a piece of the action or offer you regulation where it be organized crime or disorganized crime.

As I hear it, old man Rockefeller of Standard Oil, when into the barrel business to chock out completion. ~ buying up the materials to make barrels ~ barrels that oil was being transported in at that time. No barrels, on oil.

There is many ways to “lock in” markets, dealerships, licensing , copywriter, patent rights, etc, affiliations some of the few obvious. even Unions like Teamsters come into play, they can lock you in or lock you out.

There is no such thing as “FREE” just like there is no such thing as “BEING FREE”, it’s a mere illusion people are allowed to have as it’s got a “feel good” about it.

  • Vigilant

“How The News Makes You Stupid” is a bit of a stretch. It leaves you ignorant of the truth, not stupid.

    • eddie47d

This is all regurgitated nonsense. All the various attacks and protests at all the embassies were on the news and in the Denver Post. NBC reported everything and the local nightly news did the same. I agree there should be more reporting on the protests in Bahrain and the detention of those protesters yet they have also somewhat been in the news. Join Amnesty International for they have kept on top of each and every one of those detained. There are also numerous petition sites that ask for their release. It is also Saudi Arabia who has sent in troops and officials to help quell the demonstrators in Bahrain. The Saudis are Sunni and most of those arrested are Shiites so are we appeasing our Saudi “ally” again at the expense of the right to assemble? Could be! Since we pay Bahrain millions to use their port maybe that is why reporters are arrested and kept out. Reporting by any news media outlet is tricky in the Middle East but to say the mainstream media isn’t getting the information out isn’t true. It just isn’t enough because of the heavy hand of the dictatorial governments.

If only you could control the need to share your ignorance of the truth
we would be spared having to deal with your stupidity……..

      • Vigilant

GALT, you’ve been misinformed somewhere along the way. This is a forum for discussion between parties, not a bulletin board to record things you say about yourself.

      • GALT

Confused about the proper application of the personal pronoun you,
        Vigilant ( never, ever )?

It wasn’t a response to eddie…….but then you knew that, or you wouldn’t have responded………….

      • Vigilant

“Confused about the proper application of the personal pronoun you,”

Another sign of mental imbalance: referring to oneself in the second person (” If only you could control the need to share your ignorance of the truth…).

If I had the interest, I would try to ascertain the psychological malady described by GALT’s overruse of the ellipsis. But my interest in doing so is commensurate with GALT’s IQ: very low.

      • GALT

You children say the darnedest things……and those scatological poems are so cute.

  • Deerinwater

Well Sir. there enough evidence to support almost any claim being made. To discern the difference between information and disinformation can be a challenging task for Americans that are busy, getting the children off to school, making it to work and taking care of all the many personal responsibilities we each have and accept to do.

Most of us here on these forums have raised their children, topped out in out professional lives and have more time to “dig” in the garden in a search for the truth. ~

At this time in life, expecting loyalty and the truth from a 20 dollar Hooker is a bit silly to expect as mass media sold it’s soul to the highest bidder some time ago in a competition for market shares.

This is “Disinformation Marketing” is all a by-product of the 3rd Wave, ~ the Information Age. An old idea while applying newer, faster, cheaper devices and platforms lending itself well to politics and people desire to read the obits and see who died yesterday and know what is going on.

  • Bev

Ah yes. the Apparatchik is in full swing. The govt is controlling the news and the intelligence. They will tell us what to believe and when to believe it. We should be very worried. Get ready, ’cause it’s a coming.

    • Jazzabelle

Wasn’t there some law passed recently that allowed the federal government to spend taxpayer money to target the American people with disinformation campaigns?

  • RichE

How can you trust someone and not believe someone?

  • toto

Believe most people are missing a critical element in all of this. It is Muslim money that drives much the lack of truthful reporting or any reporting about Islamic issues. A Saudi Prince is the 2nd largest voting share holder of FOX after Rupert Murdock. They “own” large swaths of academia as well. Listen carefully to the media, they will not talk about radical Islam unless absolutely backed into a corner, they will not talk about what the Muslims themselves say about their intention to undermine America at every level and at every opportunity. They are portrayed as just nice peace loving people of faith. It is not the faith, it is the political stranglehold that is Sharia law to subjugate all none Muslims that is the problem not being discussed or even acknowledged. (Note that Kansas has enacted a law, American Law for American Courts to address this) The tenet of Islam that faith and law are not separate is Mohammed’s word. This faith and political tyranny are not separable. The powerful Islamic lobby in this country have even erased all references to Islamic radicalism, anything negative about Islam, even pictures of radical Islamists, from the training manuals of the CIA, FBI,Dept. of State, and Homeland Security(HHS) at the behest of Muslim organizations. Would you believe after 9/11 this would ever be possible?

  • Travis

Hopefully we will have another Civil War to fix this.

  • zee333

Reading the Personal Liberty Digest absolutely makes one ignorant of the facts. I like to read it just to marvel at the stupidity.

    • RichE

Who’s responsible for their ignorance? Conservatives would say the individual, socialists would say the village. Until we figure it out there will always be ignorant people.

    • deerinwater

” I like to read it just to marvel at the stupidity.”

Me too Z ~ It helps me understand how far off the road we are and what measures it might take to get back on the highway. ~ It explains how people like “W” could do a 8 years term and there are people still defending his administration.

We are stupid! and willing to believe anything someone tells us as long as they tells us they are on our side. It’s insane! Why tell just one lie went two lies work better? Supporting lies with lies!

Mitt Romney or his puppet master don’t give a damn about America or Americans but most willing to make you believe they do. They only give a damn above the illusion that they care. If his father would move to Mexico to engage in polygamy to skirt US laws, ~ warehousing earning in offshore accounts would be standard practice ~ or have you thought it though?
      I don’t believe people have.

  • michael a. bimonte

excellent article. Once upon a time we had only 3 news networks. Now, you have them, plus cable news 24/7, conservative & liberal radio talk shows, and endless internet sources.
The point is, an intelligent & engaged person should be able to sift through the white noise
and separate truth from fiction for themselves.

  • Jay

The Truth of the whole matter is that 99% of the media is liberal, since liberalism is the azz-baby of the media, after it fu**ed itself.

MTV, PBS, BBC, The Operah Winfrey Channel, G4TV, Logo, Sci-Fi, National Geographic, those BET Channels…..for goodness sake even the Disney Channel and the History Channel are all puppets to the liberal elites! Run, they’re coming after you, after all of us! With the plans to transform you into a paraplegic-black-transexual-lesbian to fund their legions of darkness. Hurry! Take your TV, and toss it out of your window…..say what, you live in a one story house? Then get the bat jimmy boy! and beat the sh*t out of that libera-propaganda-machine, but be careful, for upon cracking open your TV will let loose a swarm of tiny Marxists, Stalinists, and a few John Lennons too, grab the bugspray and exterminate the little bastards. Okay good, now……wait, somebodies at my door…..No! the Liberals have found me…….ahhh they’re gouging out my eyes…….

But lets be serious folks, liberal media is media which supports “Equality” and freedom of speech, just look around you and see how the world has prospered since liberalism’s birth, everyones happy and equal, whether you’re a woman, African American, or a homosexual, you are all equal…..heterosexuality?……males?……..white people?……Why they are the evil-elites who brought doom and destruction to the world… please standby as you are brainwashed by thousands of liberal stations, before long you’ll love everyone and desire equality amongst all……….except white heterosexual men who are evil.

Do not attempt to adjust your set. We are controlling your thoughts. We can remove your doubts with a single snarky Rachel Maddow sneer. We can expand your mind to accept everything Obama says – even before he says it – with the digital equivalent of those 60′s hippie drugs. 3-D? Ah, multiphasic mind control, that’s right! You STILL bought that? Oh, we knew you couldn’t resist, you evil capitalist – well, that’s all in the past now.

Hold on a sec – OLBERMAN! Get your foot out of the door – you are F-I-R-E-D! Sorry, we caught him watching streaming Beck videos. That insidious Mormon mind bender. Now,
put in the 3-D Harry Potter video . . . that’s right. Remember ‘They Live’? well, Rowdy Roddy Piper got it WRONG – our glasses keep you from seeing sicko skeletal commie aliens, and we don’t care if you do like seeing them that way. It’s not real and you have to be shown the true faces of goodness and Eternal Truth.

Yes, Nancy Pelosi will look like she’s sane, moral and a patriot if it makes you puke up your energy bar and granola or not….Oh, yes indeedy! With our wildly popular programming, 3-D (Dumb, Dumber and Dupetest) glasses and brilliant, incisive telling-of -truth-to-power – you WILL see the truth of Ameri-KKK-ah!

Calm, calm down now. Use your inner Ed Show Goddess voice: Listen and repeat – roooockkkk the vooooote, hope-ty chaaaaaaaange . . .

Jay ~ my dear arch nemesis , Hedrick Smith has written “my book” and offers why ~ I get so annoyed with people like yourself that support and defend predatory capitalism .

And so Smith changed the title of his novel to Who Stole the American Dream? (Random House 2012; $30) – an in-depth look at how over the past four decades political and corporate decisions have derailed the middle class.

Another surprise that made itself manifest during Smith’s investigations was that the loss of middle class power didn’t happen just a few years back when the market melted down in 2008. That mess he attributes to forces beginning back in 1971and underwater mortgages, the disappearance of our pensions, the loss of earnings in our 401 (K) as well as the exorbitant management fees that many don’t realize they’re paying, the vilification of unions and the housing collapse are all part of an extreme power shift.

“I didn’t know this and I don’t think many people did, but in 1971, attorney Lewis Powell, before he went on the Supreme Court, sparked the new economy, one widely favoring business, financial and corporate elites and stripping the middle class of their chance to earn the American dream,” says Smith. “The middle class had a very good life in America, particularly during the period when there were battles going on for civil rights and the environment, back in the ’60s and ’70s. We had an era of middle class prosperity and an era of middle class power, and by the way, those two things go together.”

    • deerinwater

The truth of the matter is “there is no liberal media” but only degrees of “right” ~ You name one left leaning cooperation Jay ~ just one.

” Smith begins with the little-known memo written by influential corporate lawyer and future Supreme Court Justice Lewis Powell. It was a “call to arms” to business as the (Republican) Nixon administration was launching the Environmental Protection Agency, Occupational Safety and Health Administration, consumer protections and a tax on high-end earners.

The memo found a receptive audience. The old capitalist ethic was fading and a new, militant conservatism was on the rise.

In 1971, only 175 companies had lobbying offices in Washington, D.C. A decade later, the number was 2,445. The Business Roundtable was formed and remains a powerful political organization representing the elite of corporate America.

Many of the shifts to come were cloaked by the benign, even exciting term, The New Economy. But almost all worked against the interests of the middle class. Smith calls it “wedge economics.”

Among them: Replacing secure pensions with unstable 401(k)s, offshoring, hollowing out the manufacturing economy and now high-end jobs, destroying unions, undermining consumer protections and the deregulated financial rackets that proved extremely costly to average Americans. Corporate chiefs such as Jack Welch were celebrated for mass firings.

Interestingly, the seeds were planted under President Carter and the forgotten 1977-78, Democratic-led Congress.

“The whole ballgame radically changed,” Smith said. “It was done on purpose. The people at top decided to go get more power and wealth. Now it’s self-reinforcing.”

  • Jefferson Thomas

For many years I have found the reporting of the media to be the same play with a different cast of clowns who show up on the stage of this play when the former clowns die off or are replaced.

Of course there never has been an “objective” media source.

I’m not sure of the exact date that it happened but Americans (including the press) lost their distrust and dislike of governmental institutions and went over to the statist dark side. Probably happened when they started voting goodies for themselves thinking some other guy would pay for it. I think it was Frederic Bastiat who said that “government is that great fictitious entity by which everyone seeks to live at the expense of every one else”.

  • Louis

There is a beleif among many that the main stream media, is a legitimate form of, “real news and imformation” while others call them, “the lame stream media, or, the drive by media,” or other such names.
I for one happen to think, that the main stream news media, is really, “a fifth collumn,” in this country, hell bent, at seeying the demise of this nation, even at them having to go down along with their own posterity, into, “oblivium!”
Amazing as to how many people fall into the same trap, the devil has laid out for the unsuspecting, over the millinia, and all, for, “lack of council!”

  • deerinwater

I can’t help but think it’s more of a labeling issue. ~ We have some serious mislabeling taking place in America today. Once you allow this “mislabeling” to happen any notions of content is lost.

Conservatives that are not actually conservative. News that is actually editorial .

Liberties that restrict and confine, New and Improved that actually old and worse.

Tea party’s with no tea. Taxation without Representation, Is actually Taxation with Representation we don’t approve of.

Americas Hostages ? or is it actually Americans held hostage?

We have allow people to abuse our language ~ if not stopped ~ we will become a Banana Republic where it is unclear to what anyone is actually saying and accept the rule that the biggest dog eats regard less.
