House To Consider Back Pay For FAA Workers

WASHINGTON, Aug. 9 (UPI) — Thousands of Federal Aviation Administration workers idled by a two-week shutdown would get back pay under a bill introduced Tuesday in the U.S. House.

The measure authorizing the payment of wages and benefits to about 4,000 FAA employees for the time they were off during the agency’s partial shutdown was introduced by Rep. Frank LoBiondo, R-N.J., along with Reps. John Mica, R-Fla., Peter King, R-N.Y., Gerry Connelly, D-Va., Lynn Westmoreland, R-Ga., and Jon Runyan, R-N.J.

“For the past two weeks it was important to get these workers back on the job,” LoBiondo, a member of the House aviation subcommittee, said in a statement on his Web site. “Now my focus is to get them back pay and to ensure this avoidable situation never happens again.”

The money for the back pay would come from the Aviation Trust Fund, which lost hundreds of millions of dollars in airline ticket-tax revenue during the July 23-Aug. 5 FAA funding impasse, he said.

Congress is on break so it will be September before the checks would be sent out.
